Hyderabad, Sep 13: As many as 18,000 policemen were deployed for Ganesh Chaturthi and subsequent immersion after ten days, police said Thursday.

According to city police commissioner Anjani Kumar, the police have received about 12,500 requests from various organisations and individuals for erecting Ganesh idols across the city.

"We have deployed 15,000 policemen for the security supervision during Ganesh Chaviti. Our officers will ensure that every pandal has security personnel. We seek cooperation from the Ganesh pandal organisers also," Kumar told PTI.

"We asked for two companies of central forces (RAF and CRPF) for the purpose. We have drawn about 3,000 policemen from other districts as well," he said.

Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samithi chief Bhagwantha Rao said this year the Ganesh idol set up at Khairatabad is 57 ft tall and it is the tallest of all in the state.

Rao said the 11-day festivities will end on September 23 and all the idols will proceed for immersion.

Meanwhile, political parties performed Ganesh puja at their respective offices.

Governor of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh ESL Narasimhan and Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao greeted people on the eve of the festival.

"The Lord Ganesh may lead all the people of Telangana on the path of progress, happiness, peace and prosperity," KCR said in a statement.

Mumbai, Sep 13: The ten-day long Ganesh festival kicked off with zeal and fervour across Maharashtra Thursday.

The festival began with devotees, mostly attired in traditional clothes, bringing colourfully-crafted idols of the elephant-headed God in their homes and pandals and installing them amid chants of 'Ganapati bappa moraya', beating of drums and and sprinkling of 'gulal' (red coloured powder).

Several beautifully decked up pandals have been erected in all major cities and towns in the state, including Mumbai, Pune, Nashik and Nagpur, where huge idols of Lord Ganesha have been placed on raised platforms for people to worship.

These makeshift tents also serve as a venue for promoting social causes such as free medical checkup, blood donation camps, charity for poor during the festival days.

Maharashtra Governor C Vidyasagar Rao and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis extended greetings to the people of the state on the festive occasion.

Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayak Chaturthi, is celebrated across the country as birthday of Lord Ganesha which comes to an end after 10 days when people come out in large numbers for immersing the idols in the sea or in different water bodies.

The festival sees devotees offering to the deity various sweets as prasad, of which 'modak' (sweet rice flour dumplings filled with coconut and jaggery) is an integral part.

According to the Hindu mythology, modak is believed to be Lord Ganesha's favourite sweet. As per the rituals, 21 modaks are offered to the God and eventually served to devotees.

In view of the festival, police across the state have beefed up security.

In the state capital, at least 15,000 security personnel will keep a vigil during the festival.

Along with the personnel of local police stations, the Local Armed Police, State Reserve Police Force (SRPF), Riot Control Police, Quick Response Team (QRT), Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) and the Civil Defence force will be deployed across the city, Mumbai police spokesperson, DCP, Manjunath Shingte, told reporters Wednesday.

Altogether 500 CCTV cameras have been installed at various locations in the metropolis for security, he said.

The festival will conclude on September 23.

Shirdi (Maha), Jul 31: The Saibaba temple here received donations worth about Rs 6.66 crore during the three-day 'Guru Poornima' festival, an official said today.

The devotees, from the country as well abroad, donated Rs 3.83 crore cash in donation boxes kept in the temple premises between July 26 and 28, Shri Saibaba Sansthan Trust's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Rubal Agrawal told reporters here yesterday.

Besides, the donation counters in the temple, located at Shirdi town in Maharashtra's Ahmednagar district, received 1.57 crore cash, she said.

In addition to this, the temple also received Rs 1 crore through online donations, debit cards, cheques and demand drafts, the CEO said.

Also, devotees from places like USA, London, Malaysia, Canada, New Zealand and Gulf countries donated foreign currencies worth Rs 11.25 lakh.

During the three-day festival, devotees also donated gold and silver items worth Rs 13.53 lakh, Agrawal said.

Apart from these donations, the temple trust earned Rs 2.7 crore through paid passes issued to visitors, distribution of 'laddoos' (ball-shaped sweets) and food offered to visitors during the festival.

The temple has around 425 kg of gold and 4,800 kg of silver items in its treasure, Agrawal said, adding that the trust also has fixed deposits worth Rs 2,180 crore in various nationalised banks.

Over three lakh devotees from different parts of the country and abroad visited the Saibaba temple during the Guru Poornima festival, she added.

Lucknow, Mar 2: Festival of colour, Holi, is being celebrated in Uttar Pradesh with traditional fevor and gaiety.
Children and elders sprayed colour and gulal on each other and later offered sweets and special prepared gujiyas and papar. With wishing 'Happy Holi' people embraced each other to convey their best wishes.
"The festival is being celebrated in a peaceful manner and there is no incident of any untoward incident from anywhere," said Director General of Police O P Singh here on Friday.
As Holi is being celebrated on Friday, Muslim clerics have rescheduled their Friday Namaz after 1300 hours from their schedule after 1200 hrs in almost all the mosques in the state. 
UP governor Ram Naik and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath have wished the people of the state on the festival. Mr Naik met the families of his staff at the Rajbhawan and exchanged greetings.
CM Yogi is in Gorakhpur for the past two days and worshipped at the Gorakhnath temple this morning and exchanged greetings with the people.
In Lucknow, a special Holi procession was brought out in the old Chowk area where politicians and others joined to celebrate the festival.
The celebration of the festival started last evening with Holika dahan and people started playing holi. UNI


New Delhi, Dec 9: Nepal wants Lumbini, the birth place of Gautam Buddha, to be the centre of initiatives for conservation of Buddhist heritage in the BIMSTEC countries.
The proposal was put forward by Nepal’s Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Jeetendra Narayan Dev, while speaking at a three-day ‘Bodhi Parva: BIMSTEC Festival of Buddhist Heritage’ here last evening.
BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Technical and Economic Cooperation) grouping comprises seven coastal countries of the Bay of Bengal -- Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Sri lanka, Thailand and Nepal.
The festival was inaugurated by Minister for Culture Dr Mahesh Sharma.
The Nepalese Minister said there was immense potential in connecting transnational Buddhist Heritage in BIMSTEC. He stressed on the importance of conservation of Buddhist Heritage across BIMSTEC region, with its center at Lumbini.
Dr Mahesh Sharma, in his remarks, underlined the relevance of the message of peace and compassion of Lord Buddha, saying it was as relevant in the twenty first century as it was two and a half millennia ago and has been a unifying force among nations.
The Minister said that ‘Bodhi Parva’ has entwined various threads of the Buddhist heritage into a beautiful melange including an exhibition of international and Indian Buddhist art and architecture, discourses by eminent scholars and practitioners of Buddhism, guided meditation and chanting by Buddhist monks and choir, screening of film on Buddhism, dance and music performances, quiz show and a food trail. These will help in building an awareness of BIMSTEC's rich and common heritage.
He said that as a regional organisation comprising seven Member States around the Bay of Bengal that brings together about one – fifth of the world population and a combined GDP of over US $ 2.8 trillion, BIMSTEC has a crucial role in development of the region.
Dr Sharma said India sees BIMSTEC as a natural platform to fulfill its key foreign policy priorities of 'Neighbourhood First' and 'Act East'.
A number of initiatives had been taken to promote cooperation among the member countries under the focus areas of security, transport and communication, environment and disaster management, tourism, traditional medicine and people-to-people exchanges, and several others were in the pipeline, he said. 
He said events such as ‘Bodhi Parva’ would also help immensely in promoting 'Brand BIMSTEC'.
The inauguration ceremony of the ‘Bodhi Parva’ was also attended by Mr Ibrahim Hossein Khan, Secretary, Ministry of Culture, Bangladesh, Heads of Missions of BIMSTEC Member States and artists and scholars from India and other BIMSTEC Member States. UNI
