A total of 500 Indian fishermen are languishing in various jails of Pakistan and Sri Lanka, the Lok Sabha was told on Wednesday.


New Delhi, Dec 12 (PTI) A total of 500 Indian fishermen are languishing in various jails of Pakistan and Sri Lanka, the Lok Sabha was told on Wednesday.

Altogether 482 fishermen are languishing in Pakistani jails while 18 are in custody in Sri Lanka, Minister of State at the External Affairs Ministry V K Singh said in a written reply.

However, he clarified that Pakistan has acknowledged custody of only 391 Indian fishermen.

Singh also said as many as 174 Indian fishermen were released by Pakistan this year while 214 fishermen were set free by Sri Lanka.

The Pakistan has also seized 1050 boats while 10 boats are in Sri Lanka custody, he added.

Pakistan and India regularly arrest each other's fishermen who inadvertently enter into their waters due to absence of any proper technology to confirm the coastline border between the two countries near Sir Creek in the Arabian Sea.

Rupohi (Assam), Sep 21: At least six fishermen were electrocuted and as many injured when a live high-voltage wire touched the water of a pond in Nagaon district of Assam Friday, police said.

The incident happened in Rupohi area under Juria police station when the 11,000-volt power line, hanging loose over the pond, touched the water.

Villagers had informed the electricity department around 5 am about the wire being loose but they were told that the wire was dead, police said quoting the residents.

After an hour the fishermen went into the pond, the wire was activated leading to the electrocution, the villagers said.

The injured were rushed to the civil hospital in Nagaon, police said.

Armed with sticks, irate villagers went to the residence of the electricity department official's house and damaged his car, police said.

State Power Minister Kesab Gogoi is headed to the site on the instruction of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, official sources said. (PTI)

Rameswaram (TN), Sep 13: Nearly 250 Tamil Nadu fishermen were allegedly chased away by the Sri Lankan Navy personnel while they were fishing off Neduntheevu, a fishermen association leader said Thursday.

The Lankan Navy personnel also snapped fishing nets of 10 boats.

The incident occurred Wednesday night when the fishermen from this island town were fishing near Neduntheevu and the Sri Lankan Navy men came to the spot in two boats and drove them away at gun-point, Rameswaram Fishermen Association President P Sesuraja alleged.

Following this, all of them returned to shore this morning without a catch, he said.

On August 10, a total of 27 fishermen from Nagapattinam, Pudukottai and Ramanathapuram districts were arrested by the Lankan Navy on the charge of fishing in the island nation waters. (PTI)

Palghar (Maha), Aug 7: It was a catch worth lakhs of rupees! Two fishermen brothers in Maharashtra's Palghar district netted a 'ghol' fish -- known for its medicinal value and in high demand in various countries -- and sold it for a whopping Rs 5.5 lakh in a mega auction.

Mahesh Meher and Bharat Meher, natives of Morbe village in Palghar, set out for fishing in the Arabian Sea last week and returned on Sunday late night with a huge 30 kg ghol fish.

While the siblings were startled to have netted a giant-size fish, they did not realise then that they were going to make a fortune out of their prized catch.

The brothers, elated over their precious possession, said after they brought the fish ashore, it got auctioned in just 20 minutes yesterday.

An export house bought it for Rs 5.5 lakh, they claimed.

The duo said they had set out for fishing last week after a long break due to the 45-day ban on venturing in the waters during the monsoon season.

"This was really a good catch. We were delighted as it was like striking 'gold' in our fishing net along with other fish varieties," the siblings told reporters at the sea shore in Morbe yesterday.

"We are into fishing since the last two decades and had only heard about such a huge ghol fish. But, with this fish catch, we actually had a wonderful experience and it also got sold for a good price," they said.

Usually, a good quality fish sells for a few thousands of rupees in the market, but the Meher brothers are happy to have earned Rs 5.5 lakh with a single catch.

The two fishermen, who were reeling under financial crisis, said now they would be able get their boat and net repaired.

The ghol fish, a type of croaker, has a good market in countries like Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia.

It is considered among the most-expensive variety of the marine fish.

Its heart is known as the 'sea gold', which is said to have medicinal properties and is an important ingredient in making a variety of medicines. (PTI)

Rameswaram(TN), Jul 24: Seven Tamil Nadu fishermen were today arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy for allegedly fishing in their territorial waters using banned fishing net, a fisheries department official said.

The incident occurred early this morning when the fishermen from Thanjavur district, who ventured into the sea last night in two country boats, were fishing off Neduntheevu, Assistant Director of Fisheries, Thanjavur district, M Chinnakuppan said.

The Sri Lankan Naval personnel rammed their vessel into their boat damaging it badly and arrested seven fishermen for intruding into their territory and poaching fish using banned fishing net, he alleged.

The naval personnel took two fishing boats including the heavily damaged boat to Kangesanthurai and anchored it there.

Four fishermen from Mandapam near here were arrested by the Lankan Navy on July 8 for allegedly poaching fish in their territorial waters using banned fishing net. (PTI)

Rameswaram (TN), Jul 5: Twelve Tamil Nadu fishermen were today arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy for allegedly fishing in their territorial waters and two mechanised boats used by them impounded, a fisheries department official said today.

Assitant Director of Fisheries department, Manikandan said nearly 3,000 fishermen from here had ventured into the sea yesterday and were fishing near Karainagar in the Lankan waters early this morning, when the Sri Lankan naval personnel came to the spot and rounded up two boats.

While those in other boats managed to escape, 12 fishermen were arrested and taken to Kangesanthurai port along with their boats, the official said.

The fishermen were charged with poaching fish in their territorial waters using the banned fishing net, he added.

This is the first incident of arrest after the fishing ban period ended on June 14.

On June 28, more than 2,500 fishermen from this island town were allegedly chased away by the Sri Lankan Navy while they were fishing near Katchatheevu. (PTI)

Vadodara, Jun 30: Two fishermen from Gujarat, who were languishing in a Pakistan jail, have been released and are on their way home, a state government official said today.

The fishermen- Danabhai Arjanbhai Chauhan from Paldi in Una tehsil of Gir Somnath district and Ramabhai Gohil from Kanzotar in Sutrapada tehsil in Saurashtra- were released from Pakistan prison yesterday evening, the official said.

"Pakistan rangers handed over both these fishermen to the Border Security Forceat Wagah border last evening.

Thereafter, Amritsar District Collector got them admitted to a city-based hospital for treatment," Kiran Dave, an official of the state fisheries department, said.

"We received the two fishermen at midnight in Amritsar after completing all the formalities. Considering their health condition, we decided to fly them back to Gujarat. They will reach Gujarat by around 3.30 pm today," he added.

While Chauhan is suffering from cancer, Gohil had an attack of paralysis while in prison.

Chauhan was apprehended by the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency for allegedly entering the neighbouring country's waters on May 3, 2017 while Gohil was nabbed earlier, on March 4, 2017.

The External Affairs Ministry had informed the Commissioner of Fisheries, Gujarat, about their imminent release. The ministry had asked the commissioner to make arrangements for their transport back to the state.

Talking to PTI over phone from Amritsar, Chauhan said, "Both of us were kept in a separate cell in a Karachi jail in Pakistan and did not get the required medical help. Despite my serious illness, I was asked to do the tasks like watering a garden and cleaning utensils."

"Now, I am very happy and delighted to be back in my country," he said and thanked Swaraj for his release.

Chauhan's wife Rudiben Chauhan had written to Swaraj last month, seeking help to bring back her ailing husband.

Gohil, who suffered a paralysis attack, is wheelchair-bound. (PTI)

Kendrapara (Odisha), Jun 25 : Two fisherwomen were killed and two others injured when lightning struck them near Hukitola Island in Kendrapara district today, police said.

The victims were on a fishing voyage on a boat when lightning struck near the island located under the jurisdiction of Mahakalpada police station, they said.

The deceased have been identified as Dipali Mandal (42) and Pannti Mandal (55) of Jamboo village, while two fishermen accompanying them received burn wounds and were taken to hospital for treatment, the police said, adding that a case of unnatural death has been registered in this connection.

As lightning is a state-specific disaster, next of kin of the deceased persons would be disbursed Rs 4 lakh ex-gratia from special relief fund, said officials.  PTI

Kochi, Jun 7: Two fishermen were injured when a foreign vessel allegedly hit their fishing boat off Kochi coast early today, police said.
The incident occurred at around 4 am while the boat from Munambam area was engaged in fishing off Kochi coast, police said.
The injured fishermen have been admitted to a hospital in Paravoor near here, they said.
The ship left the scene soon after the incident.
Fishermen have alleged that their boat was hit by a foreign vessel, police said adding the Navy and Coast Guard have been informed about the incident.
A Navy official said they were informed about the incident that occurred some 18 Nautical Mile off the Kochi coast.
He said the Navy is monitoring the situation. (PTI)

Kanyakumari, Dec 2: Panic and tension gripped the coastal hamlets of Cyclone Ockhi-ravaged Kanyakumari district, as 1,000 fishermen who had ventured into the deep seas were reportedly missing.
The fishermen had ventured into the sea in around 100 boats four days back and have not returned, their family members claimed on Saturday.
A large number of fishermen-women staged a road-roko agitation at Chinnathurai coastal hamlet demanding the government to intensify aerial searches and rescue operations to rescue the missing fishermen. Meanwhile, official sources said the Indian Coast Guard rescued 32 fishermen hailing from Kanyakumari, who were stranded on the high seas. The fishermen were brought to Thrissur in Kerala. They will be transported to their respective native places by road. UNI
