Vadodara, Jul 17: The Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd (SSNNL) in Gujarat has stopped releasing water from the irrigation bypass tunnel (IBPT) following heavy rains in the dam's catchment areas in the state and Madhya Pradesh, a top official has said.

Due to drinking water crisis, the SSNL had started releasing Sardar Sarovar dam water from the IBPT in February this year and it was scheduled to continue till the end of this month, Dr J N Singh, Chief Secretary of the Gujarat government told PTI over the phone yesterday.

"However, owing to heavy rains in the dam's catchment areas in Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, the SSNNL yesterday stopped releasing water from the IBPT. As per the earlier schedule, the release of water was supposed to continue till July 31," he said.

As a result of good rainfall, the water level of the dam went up to 110.95 metres yesterday afternoon, he said.

He said more rainfall is expected in these two neighbouring states as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

"Gujarat had to release water from the IBPT in February as the dam level had plunged. The step was necessary to provide drinking water to people in several cities and villages in the state," Singh said.

S S Rathore, Chairman and Managing director of the SSNL said that for the first time in the last 13 years, the water level of the dam had plunged very low.

"It was the worst water level recorded in the last 13 years. It led to drinking water crisis in parts of the state and therefore we were compelled to release water from the IBPT from February 22," he added.

Vadodara, Jul 13: Incessant rains in a large part of Gujarat over the last two days have reduced the demand for electricity by 3,000 mw, an official said today.

Over the last couple of days, heavy to very heavy rainslashed Dangs, Navsari, Valsad and Tapi districtsin South Gujarat, Gir Somnath, Amreli and Dwarkadistricts in Saurashtra and Narmada, Vadodara and Panchmahal districts in Central Gujarat.

The downpour hasreduced the demand for electricity by 3,000 mw in the state, said the official of the Gujarat Energy Transmission Company Ltd (GETCO), promoted by the state government.

The demand for power from the agriculture sector in the districts that received heavy rains has come down to almost nil, he said.

"The demand for power has dropped to 13,000 mw from the peak of 16,000 mw in May and June when Gujaratwas reeling under severe heatwave conditions," he told.

The heavy rains have reduced the demand for power for cooling as well as for operating pumps to draw groundwater for farm-related purposes, the official said.

The southwest monsoon covered several parts of the state in the last couple of days and more than half a dozen districts have received excess rainfall.

The annual meeting of RSS's Akhil Bharatiya Prant Pracharak will be held in Somnath town between July 15 and 17, a spokesperson of the organisation said.

After his arrival in Somnath, located around 400 kms from here, Bhagwat visited the famous Somnath temple, which is one of the 12 jyotirlingas in the country.

He was welcomed by former Gujarat Chief Minister and chairman of Somnath Temple Trust Keshubhai Patel. Bhagwat offered prayers at the temple and later paid tributes to the country's first home minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel at his statue located on the temple premises.

Dhule (Maha), Jul 5: The police has arrested the main accused in the case of lynching of five men by a mob in district on suspicion of child lifting, an official said today.

Maharu Pawar, 22, was arrested from the neighbouring Nandurbar district yesterday, Dhule Superintendent of Police M Ramkumar told.

Pawar was absconding since the incident took place on Sunday and hiding in Nandurbar, he said.

"Our team was searching for him and was able to nab him," he said.

In a video of the incident that went viral on social media, Pawar was purportedly seen leading the mob while thrashing the five men with sticks and rods, Ramkumar said.

Pawar is the 24th person arrested in the case, the SP said, adding that a search was on for some more accused.

On July 1, five men of a nomadic tribe were lynched by a mob in Dhule's Rainpada village on the suspicion of being child-lifters, sending shock waves through the state.

According to videos which went viral, one of the five victims apparently tried to speak to a six-year-old girl after which they were pounced upon, stoned and thrashed with sticks and chappals.

The provocation was apparently some rumours on social media which suggested that a gang of child-lifters was active in the area.

According to police officials and locals, the victims were first attacked by a group of "highly inebriated" people in Kakar pada village.

The five men were then brought to the adjoining Rainpada village while being continuously thrashed along the one-km stretch.

The police received a distress call around 11 am on July 1 and they reached the spot around 12 noon, a distance of nearly 40 km, Pimpalner's assistant police inspector Yogesh Khatkal had earlier said.

He said there was a crowd of about 3,000 people when they reached the incident site.

"When we reached there, all the five were dead," Khatkal had said.

The tribals had arrived there on last Saturday night and had planned to go to the police station on Sunday to register themselves.

The victims belonged to the nomadic Nath Gosavi community who move from place to place in Maharashtra in search of food and work.

Whenever people from this community visit a village, they report to the local police station about their stay.

Incidents of lynching triggered by rumours claimed 10 lives in 14 incidents in Maharashtra during the last one-and-a-half months, the police had earlier said.

In the wake of the horrific crime, the police decided to compile data of lynchings so as to devise a preventive strategy, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Bipin Bihari had said.

Vadodara, Jun 30: Two fishermen from Gujarat, who were languishing in a Pakistan jail, have been released and are on their way home, a state government official said today.

The fishermen- Danabhai Arjanbhai Chauhan from Paldi in Una tehsil of Gir Somnath district and Ramabhai Gohil from Kanzotar in Sutrapada tehsil in Saurashtra- were released from Pakistan prison yesterday evening, the official said.

"Pakistan rangers handed over both these fishermen to the Border Security Forceat Wagah border last evening.

Thereafter, Amritsar District Collector got them admitted to a city-based hospital for treatment," Kiran Dave, an official of the state fisheries department, said.

"We received the two fishermen at midnight in Amritsar after completing all the formalities. Considering their health condition, we decided to fly them back to Gujarat. They will reach Gujarat by around 3.30 pm today," he added.

While Chauhan is suffering from cancer, Gohil had an attack of paralysis while in prison.

Chauhan was apprehended by the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency for allegedly entering the neighbouring country's waters on May 3, 2017 while Gohil was nabbed earlier, on March 4, 2017.

The External Affairs Ministry had informed the Commissioner of Fisheries, Gujarat, about their imminent release. The ministry had asked the commissioner to make arrangements for their transport back to the state.

Talking to PTI over phone from Amritsar, Chauhan said, "Both of us were kept in a separate cell in a Karachi jail in Pakistan and did not get the required medical help. Despite my serious illness, I was asked to do the tasks like watering a garden and cleaning utensils."

"Now, I am very happy and delighted to be back in my country," he said and thanked Swaraj for his release.

Chauhan's wife Rudiben Chauhan had written to Swaraj last month, seeking help to bring back her ailing husband.

Gohil, who suffered a paralysis attack, is wheelchair-bound.

Vadodara, Jun 23 : A Class 10 student was held under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act in connection with the killing of a junior student in a school here, an official said today.

The body of the 14-year-old boy, a Class 9 student, was found dead with multiple stab wounds in the washroom of the school yesterday.

The victim had 10 stab wounds on his body, Deputy Police Commissioner (DCP) R S Bhagora had said yesterday.

The 17-year-old accused, a student of the same school located in Baranpora area, was held in Valsad town in South Gujarat late last night, Vadodara police Commissioner Manoj Sashidhar told PTI.

A police team from here has been sent to Valsad to bring the teenager to the city, he said.

He will be questioned to learn the reason behind the brutal killing of the Class 9 student, police said.

The accused student came under the lens after he was spotted in CCTV footage entering the washroom along with the victim, they said.

The victim had joined the school only a week ago and was staying with his maternal uncle here, while his parents live in Gujarat's Anand town, the police had said.

The killing was a grim reminder of the murder of a seven-year-old student in Gurgaon last year. The victim was found in a pool of blood, with his throat slit, in his school's washroom on September 8 last year.

Meanwhile, Jagruti Pandya, chairperson of the Gujarat State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, said the mental condition of the detained student will be examined to know what prompted him to allegedly kill his junior.

Pandya said she has sought a report on the incident from the district administration.

She also held meetings with officials of the district education department, the city police commissioner and others over the incident. PTI

Ahmedabad/Vadodara, Sept 4: In the election year in the western state of Gujarat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to make his sixth visit to the home state this year and elaborate arrangements are being made for launching the newly constructed gates of Narmada Dam on September 17. "September 17 is PM Modi's birthday. The newly constructed gates of Narmada Dam will be inaugurated by him on that day," Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani told a group of visiting journalists. The new gates would raise the height of the dam to 138.68 metres. “Modi will inaugurate Narmada Dam at Kevadiya and also address people at Dabhoi in Vadodara district," a senior official of the plant said. It may be mentioned here that the Narmada Control Authority in June this year granted permission to the state government to close the gates, which will raise water level in the Sardar Sarovar reservoir. "Raising the height of the dam will prove to be a boon for the participating states like Gujarat, Rajasthan and Maharashtra. Its value would be more realised in times of water stress as experienced in these states last year. Due to higher water head and enhanced storage, the hydro power generation would be increased by about 40 per cent," P C Vyas, Chief Engineer Sardar Saravar project told UNI. "The enhanced height would also mean 3.75 times increase in the live storage capacity," he said. The work on Sardar Sarovar project had begun originally in 1961 but after disputes and setting up of a tribunal, contract was awarded only in 1987 with the proposal for work for 1210 metre long and 163 metre height. "But the dam construction work was stayed in 1995 and finally in October 2000, the Supreme Court gave its landmark verdict and directed for expeditious completion of the project with stage wise permission considering environmental issues and adequate rehabilitation packages," said Mr Vyas. Special arrangements are being made for grand celebration of the launch and there will be also accommodation of hundreds of priests, who will also arrive to perform the first-of-its-kind Narmada aarati. According to BJP leaders and state government top brass, Prime Minister Modi is credited for clearing the way for installation of the gates of the dam after assuming office as Prime Minister in 2014. “Till 1997, the Narmada project was moving at snail pace, but Narendra Modi put it on a fast track after taking reins of Gujarat as chief minister in 2001 and later gave it a boost after he became Prime Minister,” said Mr Rupani. Sardar Sarovar Project is considered as one of the largest human endeavours to transport 11.7 billion cubic meter of water every year to a distance up to 700 kilometres to quench the thirst of the water scarce areas.
