Chennai, Oct 3: Pattali Makkal Katchi Wednesday said it would a hold protest demonstration on October 5 across Tamil Nadu to condemn the unprecedented hike in fuel prices.

PMK's founder leader Dr S Ramadoss will preside over the protest at Tindivanam and party president GK Mani will lead the stir here, a party release said.

"People should be apprised about the impact of the hike in petrol and diesel prices and they too should be exhorted to take part in the protest," a party release said.

The price of petrol today in Tamil Nadu is Rs 87.18 and diesel Rs 79.58 (per litre). (PTI)

New Delhi, Jun 27 : The government today hiked the price of ethanol produced from C-molasses by Rs 2.85 per litre to Rs 43.70 for the new season starting December 2018, according to sources.

For the first time, the government has also fixed the price of ethanol produced from B-molasses at Rs 47.49 per litre. So far, the price was only fixed for ethanol produced from C-molasses.

A decision in this regard was taken in a Cabinet meeting headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

According to the sources, the Cabinet increased the price of ethanol produced from C-molasses to Rs 43.70 per litre for the 2018-19 season (December-November) from the current Rs 40.85 per litre.

The price of ethanol produced from B-molasses has been fixed higher at Rs 47.49 per litre in order to encourage sugar mills to divert from sugar production, the sources added.

Molasses is a viscous product resulting from refining sugarcane or sugar beets into sugar.

The sugar industry and even NCP supremo Sharad Pawar had demanded a higher ethanol price to improve the liquidity of cash-starved mills and enable them clear cane arrears that have crossed Rs 22,000 crore.

Oil marketing companies (OMCs) procure ethanol from sugar mills for blending with petrol. Mills are expecting revenue realisation of over Rs 5,000 crore from sale of ethanol to OMCs during the 2017-18 sugar season (October-September).

Doping petrol with 5 per cent ethanol was launched in 2003 to promote the use of alternative and environment-friendly fuels as also cut import dependence.

Now the government intends to achieve 10 per cent blending of ethanol with petrol, for which 313 crore litre of ethanol is required, according to industry body ISMA.

In the current 2017-18 season, sugar mills have contracted to supply 113 crore litres, which will be an all-time record.

The previous record was 111 crore litre in 2015-16.

Sugar mills are incurring losses as prices have fallen below production cost on account of record output of 31.5 million tonne in 2017-18 season as against the annual domestic demand of 25 million tonne.     PTI

Jaipur, May 28 : Amid the constant rise in fuel prices, a local Congress leader along with some locals today took out a 'Shav Yatra' or funeral procession of a motorcycle on a hand pulled cart here.

Decorated with flowers, the cart with motorcycle was pulled by Congress leader Suresh Mishra and some others. 

They took out the symbolic procession for nearly one and a half km area in Bhankrota area. Fuel prices have put extra burden on people and have disturbed their budget. But the government is taking no measures to control the prices, Mishra said.

He said there is outcry and resentment among the public and the government should immediately take steps to provide relief.

 New Delhi, May 14 :  Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Monday attacked the Narendra Modi-led NDA government over the rise in fuel prices in the country close on the heels of the Karnataka elections concluding.
Mr Gandhi said soon after the Karnataka election got over, the fuel prices touched a new high in four years and "fooling people" was the "key principle of Modinomics".
The Congress leader tweeted, "Karnataka finishes voting, FUEL prices rise to a 4 yr. high!
The Key Principle of Modinomics: fool as many people as you can, as often as you can".
The public sector oil marketing companies (OMCs) have hiked the prices of petrol and diesel on Monday by 17 and 23 paise respectively. The hike has been made after a gap of 19 days.
On Monday, petrol was selling at Rs 74.80 per litre in Delhi, Rs 77.50 per litre in Kolkata, Rs 82.65 per litre in Mumbai and Rs 77.61 per litre in Chennai. Diesel prices were at Rs 66.14 per litre, Rs. 68.68 per litre, Rs 70.43 per litre and Rs 69.79 per litre respectively in the four metro cities.UNI
