Jaipur, Jan 28 :  Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of destroying India's image as a country of peace and harmony and urged the youth not to let their voice be suppressed.

Addressing a youth rally here, the former Congress president blamed the BJP-led government at the Centre of creating an image for the country that deterred investors.

He claimed that one crore people lost their jobs in the past year while the Modi government had promised the creation of two crore new ones.

Gandhi said the growth rate of 9 per cent reached during the UPA term has now declined to 5 per cent -- and claimed it is only 2.5 per cent if measured in the same manner in which it was during the UPA period.

He said Narendra Modi has not studied economics, claiming that the prime minister could not understand the Goods and Services Tax (GST). Gandhi also criticised the PM on demonetisation, when high-value currency notes were withdrawn.

He urged the youth not to let their voice be suppressed and ask questions on employment and on the country's future.

Gandhi said wherever Modi goes he talks of CAA, NRC and NPR but not on real issues like unemployment.

But the Congress leader made no direct comment on the Citizenship Amendment Act, the National Register of Citizens and the National Population Register -- or on the recent protests, many of them involving young people, on these issues.

The Jaipur public meeting was billed 'Yuva Aakrosh Rally', focusing on youth anger over unemployment and the state of the economy.

"Narendra Modi has destroyed India's image and reputation in the world. Today, India is known as the rape capital but Narendra Modi does not talk about this," he said at the rally at Jaipur's Ramniwas Garden.

He said when the youth raise questions over unemployment and ask Modi why he "destroyed" India's image, you are answered with bullets and are suppressed.

He said India's biggest asset and strength are the youth, who are capable of competing with China but the government is wasting this asset.

Rahul Gandhi suggested that the US, Europe and other regions are looking at India as a manufacturing hub as a balance to China.

India's youth have the potential. They can compete with China. The companies which are there in China want to invest in India. But they say that earlier peace prevailed in India but today there is violence, he said.

They say that the government of India is spreading violence and how can an investment be made in an environment where there is no surety for tomorrow, he said.

He said the world saw India in the past as a country where there was harmony.

People used to say look at Pakistan where there is an environment of violence. Pakistan is a divided nation but India takes everyone along -- and this image of India has been tarnished by Modi, he said.

Gandhi charged Modi of extending benefits to a handful of industrialists, ignoring farmers and the youth.

The first thing he did was benefitting top 15 industrialists -- only 15 and not 100 or 200, Gandhi said. Urging balance he said Modi should have waived farm loans as well.

Chief minister Ashok Gehlot and Deputy Chief minister and state Congress president Sachin Pilot were among the Congress leaders who attended the rally.
Rajasthan Assembly

Jaipur, Jan 25 :  The Rajasthan assembly on Saturday ratified a bill that extends reservation to scheduled castes and scheduled tribes in Lok Sabha and state assemblies for another 10 years.

Today was the last day to ratify the Constitution (126th) Amendment Bill by state assemblies and it will come into effect from January 26.

During a debate on the ratification of the Bill, the BJP accused the state government of delaying the process.

Deputy Leader of Opposition in the assembly, Rajendra Rathore, said the debate on the ratification of the Bill was "without any basis" as it had already been passed by the Parliament and signed by the President.

Rathore alleged that Parliamentary Affairs Minister Shanti Dhariwal had not followed the Statute Book and the session was called on a four days notice instead of a 21-day notice.

The Rajya Sabha had sent an advisory to the assembly secretariat on December 20 last year, saying the Bill's ratification should be done before January 10, he claimed.

"The government was in a deep slumber and woke up only on January 19, and hurriedly called the session on a four-day notice," Rathore said.

Dhariwal said BJP legislators are arguing that the session was called in a hurry, but have all BJP-ruled states ratified the amendment Bill.

He said the BJP as a responsible opposition should have alerted the government, if there was any delay.

"You have lost the right to be called the opposition. It was your duty to alert the government but you didn't. That's why people see the BJP as a useless opposition," the minister said.

Following the debate Speaker C P Joshi put the resolution to voice vote and it was passed in the House.

The provision giving reservation to SC and ST communities for the past 70 years in Lok Sabha and state assemblies expires on January 25.

The Parliament recently passed a constitution amendment bill in this regard and it has to be ratified by at least 50 per cent of the assemblies before it becomes a law.

Leader of the Opposition in the Rajasthan assembly Gulab Chand Kataria said it was unfortunate that there was no debate on the governor's speech.

To this, the speaker said it would have been ideal if the debate on the governor's speech was held today, but due to certain circumstances, it will take place when the House reassembles on February 10.
Former Union minister Yashwant Sinha

Jaipur, Jan 23 :  The Citizenship (Amendment) Act is "unconstitutional" and the central government must withdraw it, former Union minister Yashwant Sinha said on Thursday.

Sinha also demanded a judicial probe into the violence that broke out in several parts of the country against the amended law, particularly in BJP ruled states.

"The government is trying to divert public attention but such diversion will not last long. It is temporary. The government should withdraw the CAA as it is unconstitutional," he said here.

"There are a number of problems and issues in the country which includes the issues of farmers, youth and unemployment. There is an atmosphere of unrest and the government should fulfil its constitutional duty without doing any discrimination on the basis of caste and religion," he added.

Sinha will extend his support to a rally which scheduled to be organised on Friday against the CAA, National Register of Citizens and the National Population Register (NPR).
Polling for first phase of panchayat polls underway in Rajasthan

Jaipur, Jan 17 :  Polling started on a dull note for the first phase of panchayat elections in Rajasthan on Friday.

In the first two hours of polling, only 8.30 per cent voting was recorded, a state Election Commission spokesperson said.

Polling began at 8 am.

In the first phase, polling is being held for 26800 wards of 2726 gram panchayats of 87 panchayat samitis.

There are a total of 93,20,684 voters in these 87 Panchayat Samiti areas.

State Election Commissioner P S Mehra had said on Thursday that 17,242 candidates for the Sarpanch post and 42,000 candidates for the Panch post are in the fray.

Over 11,000 EVM machines will be used in the polls.

Counting of votes will be done today itself.

The second phase of polling will be held on January 22.

Jaipur, Aug 5   :  The Rajasthan assembly on Monday passed a Bill providing for a significant raise in salaries and allowances payable to state ministers.

The House passed the Rajasthan Ministers' Salaries (Second Amendment) Bill, 2019 by a voice vote.

The bill was introduced by state's Parliamentary Affairs Minister Shanti Dhariwal today and was passed after a brief debate on it.

Introducing the bill, Dhariwal said looking to the present level of prices, the existing salary and sumptuary and other allowances payable to the chief minister and other state ministers, including parliamentary secretaries appeared to be inadequate.

"Under these circumstances, it has been considered expedient to increase the salary and allowances payable to them," Dhariwal told the House.

Following the passage of the Bill, the salaries and various allowances payable to various categories of ministers, including the chief minister, ministers of State, deputy ministers and parliamentary secretaries will go up.                                      [Agencies]

Jaipur, Aug 5  :   The Rajasthan legislative assembly on Monday passed a bill providing for life imprisonment and a fine up to Rs 5 lakh to convicts in cases of mob lynching involving the victim's death.

'The Rajasthan Protection from Lynching Bill, 2019' was passed by the Vidhan Sabha by a voice vote amid vociferous protest by the opposition BJP, which wanted the Bill to be referred to a select committee.

The Bill was introduced by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Shanti Dhariwal in the state assembly last week.

Responding to the debate on the bill, Dhariwal Monday told the House that though there are provisions in the Indian Penal Code and the Criminal Procedure Code to deal with the cases of mob lynching incidents, they are not adequate.

Accordingly, the government has brought in the Bill to provide for strict punishment to curb such incidents, he said.

It is proposed to nip the evil in the bud and to prevent spreading of hatred or incitement to mob lynching by creating special offences against such offences," the statement of object and reason of the bill said.

Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot had announced to bring in the Bill while replying to the debate on state Budget on July 16.                                                                [Agencies]

Jaipur, Mar 26 :  Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday promised a "surgical strike" on poverty and said his party had been working on how to eradicate it for the last six months.

Addressing a rally in Suratgarh a day after declaring his party would roll out a minimum income guarantee scheme for the poorest 20 per cent households if voted to power, Gandhi said only the rich could dream under the Narendra Modi rule.

"We will eradicate poverty in the country. This is a 'dhamaka'. No country has done this in history. There should not be a single poor person in the country," Gandhi said.

He said his party would work to reduce unemployment if it comes to power.

"If Modi gives money to the rich, the Congress will give money to the poor," Gandhi said.

Alleging that Modi had helped those who had black money, the Congress president said those lifted from poverty by the UPA government had again been made poor in the last five years.

According to him, 14 crore people were lifted from poverty by the UPA government.

"It is a shame that there are still 25 crore poor people in the country," Gandhi said.

"You will get the right price for your labour and product," he told the gathering.

The UPA government had launched schemes over 10 years but Modi ended them all, the Congress chief said, adding that the prime minister had failed to understand the MGNREGA job scheme.

Taking a jibe at Modi, he said the prime minister was indeed a "chowkidaar" but of industrialist Anil Ambani.          [Agencies]

Jaipur, Mar 5  :   Rajasthan Congress chief Sachin Pilot said Tuesday the party will contest all 25 Lok Sabha seats in the state in the upcoming elections.

"Selection of nominees is in the final stage and a lot will be clear after the screening committee meeting on March 8 in New Delhi," Pilot told reporters.

He said the selection of candidate would be done on the basis of feedback of party workers, hard work and winnability. The party is of the opinion to find nominees other than the family members of leaders, sitting MPs and MLAs and those who lost elections in the past.

However, the choice of party workers and people and winnability of the candidates would be considered, he added.

He said the Congress has been contesting on all seats in the state and will do so this time as well to secure a win in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

A panel of three candidates will be sent to the party's central committee to finalise the names, he said.

Pilot attacked the incumbent BJP-led government at the Centre, saying the Congress is contesting the election to defeat the "forces that have weakened and hollowed democratic institutions in the past five years".

"So, it is an important election for us," he said.

The BJP won all 25 seats in Rajasthan in the 2014 general elections.

On the Indian Air Force air strike at a Jaish terror camp in Balakot of Pakistan, Pilot said the action on terrorist facility was a matter of pride for India and "it is not right to raise question on valour of the security forces".

Citing BJP leader B S Yeddyurappa's statement that India's preemptive air strike on a terror camp in Pakistan has created a wave in favour of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pilot said, "It is not appropriate on the part of a few BJP leaders who are trying to do politics on security forces' action".         [Agencies]

The veteran Congress leader also wished early recovery to those injured in one of the deadliest terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir when a Jaish suicide bomber rammed a vehicle carrying over 100 kg of explosives into a CRPF bus on Thursday.

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Vasundhara Raje in a tweet said: "Your martyrdom has filled tears in everyone's eyes but your bravery, valour and sacrifice has made every Indian proud."

"I wish peace for the departed souls of the soldiers, courage for the families and speedy recovery of the injured," she said.
