New Delhi, Jul 3: The Delhi High Court extended today the interim protection from arrest granted to former union minister P Chidambaram in the INX Media corruption case till August 1.

Justice A K Pathak, who had earlier granted the interim protection till today, extended the relief to Chidambaram by one more month.

The high court had on May 31 asked the senior Congress leader to join questioning and cooperate in the investigation as and when called by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The CBI, had on the last date of hearing, opposed the anticipatory bail plea saying Chidambaram should have first approached the trial court for relief, instead of the high court.

In Chidambaram's anticipatory bail plea, it was contended that the former minister was being harassed in the case, in which he was not named.

Chidambaram had on May 30 rushed to a trial court for protection from arrest in the Aircel-Maxis case of the Enforcement Directorate before approaching the high court in connection with the INX Media case.

The senior Congress leader's role has come under the scanner of investigating agencies in the Aircel-Maxis deal of Rs 3,500 crore and INX Media case involving Rs 305 crore.

It was during his tenure as finance minister in the UPA-1 regime that FIPB clearance was granted to the two ventures in which alleged irregularities have been found.

In the INX Media case, the CBI had registered an FIR on May 15 last year against alleged irregularities in the FIPB clearance to INX Media for receiving overseas funds to the tune of Rs 305 crore in 2007 when Chidambaram was finance minister.

Chidambaram's son Karti Chidambaram was also arrested in the matter on February 28 for allegedly receiving funds to the tune of Rs 10 lakh in the case. He was granted bail on March 23.

The other accused in the case include then INX Media Director Indrani Mukerjea and then INX News Director Peter Mukerjea. (PTI)

Mumbai, Apr 7: Former INX Media head Indrani Mukerjea underwent a brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan and other tests after she was rushed to the Sir J J Hospital on late Friday night in delirious state, a top official said.
"We are carrying out several tests and she has just undergone a brain MRI. We are awaiting the reports. This will help us ascertain whether she had a drugs overdose or is it some other issue," hospital dean Dr S D Nanandkar told media persons here.
Indrani, who is currently in judicial custody since August 2015 as one of the prime accused in the April 2012 disappearance and subsequent murder of her 24-year-old daughter Sheena Bora, was rushed to the hospital at around 2300 hours last night from Byculla Jail.
She was reported to be in a semi-conscious and delirious state, allegedly owing to drugs overdose, when she was admitted in the hospital.
However, Dr Nanandkar said now she is responding well to the treatment, all her vital parameters are normal and her health condition is 'stable'.
On receipt of the different tests and MRI reports, the medical team would evaluate and decide on the further course of action, he added.
Earlier, in 2015, Indrani had been rushed to hospital for a similar medical emergency arising out of a suspected drugs overdose and remained under treatment for nearly a week. UNI

New Delhi, Mar 12: The court of CBI Special Judge Sunil Rana on Monday extended by 12 days, till March 24, judicial custody of Karti Chidambaram who was arrested in connection with INX media money laundering case.
Central Bureau of Investigation had arrested Karti, the son of veteran Congressman P Chidambaram, on February 28 at Chennai Airport on his return from London with the allegation that he was not cooperating with the probe agency.
In the month of May, 2017, the CBI had filed a case against Karti for alleged irregularities in Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to INX Media, criminal conspiracy and cheating. It further submitted that INX Media received overseas funds to the tune of Rs 305 crore in 2007 when Karti’s father P Chidambaram was the Finance Minister.
Directorate of Enforcement had registered a money laundering case against Karti and others in May 2017 for his role in facilitating clearance from the FIPB for INX Media Ltd and its Directors Peter and Indrani Mukherjea, both of whom are accused in the murder of Sheena Bora.
Directorate of Enforcement arrested Karti’s chartered accountant S Bhaskararaman in the case under provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). ED has submitted that during the course of the investigation, it was revealed that Bhaskararaman had been assisting Karti to manage his 'ill-gotten wealth' in India and abroad.
Counsel for CBI submitted before the court that further custody of Kartik was not required but he was evasive and not cooperative during the probe.
CBI contended that new incriminating materials, a CD and documents were recovered in connection with the case during the probe.
Counsel for Karti argued that there is no reason to hold him in custody. He further submitted that Karti is ready to fulfill the conditions of bail if granted by the court. He also sought a separate cell in case Karti was sent to judicial custody.
Counsel for CBI said,'Under the circumstances when there is sufficient material clearly implicating the accused in this serious economic offence, it is absolutely necessary that the accused be remanded to the judicial custody.'
Judge Rana after hearing arguments on behalf of CBI and defence counsel passed an order of 12 days judicial custody, till March 24 of Karti Chidambaram and sent him to Tihar. UNI

New Delhi, Mar 8: The Supreme Court on Thursday asked Karti Chidambaram, an accused in the INX media case, to approach Delhi High Court for relief.
Karti is seeking quashing of the summons issued against him by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). 
A three-judge bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra and also comprising Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud said, "you approach Delhi High Court for relief."
The top court also requested the Delhi High Court to set up appropriate bench or to adjudicate the Karti Chidambaram matter on Friday or day after.
Karti, in his plea, had stated that the ED was probing the case against him, by crossing its jurisdiction. 
Karti (the son of former Finance Minister in the Congress-led UPA Government, P Chidambaram) is an accused for his alleged involvement in the FIPB (Foreign Investment Promotion Board) clearance for Rs 305-crore irregular Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the INX media case in 2007, the CBI, the investigating agency, claimed. 
The apex court had earlier in its detailed order on November 20, last year allowed Karti's plea to go to the UK from December 01 to 10 last year for the purpose of his daughter's admission with certain terms and conditions.

New Delhi, Mar 6: The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to grant relief to Karti Chidambaram, son of former Finance Minister P Chidambaram, in the INX media case, and posted the issue for further hearing to March 8. 
A three-judge bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, posted the matter for further hearing to March 8.
Kapil Sibal, senior lawyer appearing for Karti, pleaded to the Supreme Court for interim relief in the case. 
'We are willing to co-operate in every way in the case with the investigating agency and we also did that in the past,' Sibal said. 
The Apex Court also issued notice to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on the PMLA (Prevention of Money Laundering Act) case registered against Karti.
The accused, in his plea, had stated that the ED is probing the case against him, by crossing its jurisdiction. He is presently in the CBI custody.

New Delhi, Mar 5: Karti Chidambaram, an accused in the INX media scam, on Monday approached the Supreme Court seeking quashing of the summons issued by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) against him in the case. 
Chidambaram moved the apex court's three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra and also comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, seeking quashing of the summons issued by the ED in the case. 
The court said it would hear the plea tomorrow. 
Chidambaram, presently in the CBI custody, stated in his plea that the ED is probing the case against him by crossing its jurisdiction.

Puducherry, Mar 3: Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayansamy on Saturday said the arrest of Karti Chidambaram, son of former Union Minister P Chidambaram, by the CBI in the INX Media case, is an act of political vendetta. 
Talking to newspersons here , Mr Narayanasamy said Mr Chidambaram was criticizing the Union government particularly, its economic policy time and again and because of this, Karti was targetted. 
It was stated that he is being interrogated on the basis of the statement given by Indrani Mukherjee who is languishing in a jail on charges of murdering her own daughter, Mr Narayansamy said, adding that it will be proven that Karti have committed no irregularities. 
He said the Constitution of the Cauvery Management Board (CMB) is the direction from Supreme Court and it is the duty of the Central Ggovernment to execute the Apex Court orders. If it failed, the Centre will have to face a contempt of court case.
Mr Narayanasamy said Karnataka was ‘cheating’ Tamil Nadu in sharing of water and Tamil Nadu was ‘cheating’ Puducherry. As far as Puducherry is concerned, both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are the real culprits, he added.
He also said that a memorandum seeking the constitution of the CMB had been submitted to the Prime Minister when he visited Puducherry last month. The Chief Minister said that he along with his Cabinet Colleagues had apprised the financial requirements of the Union Territory to the Prime Minister at the Airport here.
He heard them and assured to consider, Mr Narayansamy said and added that unfortunately, Mr Modi talked about politics here and left without announcing any concessions or schemes for the UT.
Mr Modi is the only Prime Minister who left Puducherry without announcing some schemes for it, he added.
The discrimination among ruling party ruled states and opposition ruled states is not good, the Chief Minister said. UNI

New Delhi, Feb 22: Karti Chidambaram -- an accused in the INX media case and son of former union minister P Chidambaram -- on Thursday requested the Supreme Court to urgently hear the Enforcement Directorate's summons against him.
The apex court three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra and also comprising Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud, said, we would hear it tomorrow (Friday).
Karti had moved the apex court against the ED's summons against him for March 1.
Karti is an accused for his alleged involvement in the FIPB (Foreign Investment Promotion Board) clearance for Rs 305-crore irregular Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the INX media case in 2007, the CBI, the investigating agency, claimed.

New Delhi, Nov 16: The Supreme Court on Thursday adjourned the plea filed by Karti Chidambaram, seeking to travel abroad for a week, for Monday, November 20. 
Karti, son of former Finance Minister in the Congress-led UPA Government, is allegedly involved in the FIPB (Foreign Investment Promotion Board) clearance for Rs 305 crore irregular foreign direct investment (FDI) in the INX Media in 2007, the CBI, the investigating agency, claimed. The CBI sought more time to reply to the plea filed by Karti seeking to travel abroad for a week. Karti had approached the apex court seeking its direction to allow his plea. He had stated that he wanted to go to attend a seminar for a week at the Cambridge University. The apex court three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra and also comprising Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud asked the probe agency, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), to file its reply by Thursday evening.
