New Delhi, Mar23: The Supreme Court on Friday asked the Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra governments to file detailed affidavits within four weeks in the MM Kalburgi murder case.
Author MM Kalburgi was allegedly murdered in Dharwad in Karnataka in 2015.
A three-judge bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra and also comprising Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud was hearing the submissions from Krishna Kumar, lawyer appearing for Umadevi Kalburgi, wife of the deceased author, MM Kalburgi.
Umadevi Kalburgi had moved the apex court seeking a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the murder of her husband MM Kalburgi.
Umadevi, in her petition, had alleged that the same organisation's shooters were allegedly involved behind the murders of her husband MM Kalburgi, Pansare and Dabholkar. She said the Karnataka Police probe was in a sorry state.
Kalburgi's widow had in the last hearing, in January, told the top court that it seemed that there was a similar pattern in the alleged murders of her husband, Dhabolkar and Panasare and there has to be a coordinated probe into all the three cases.
Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Pinky Anand, senior law officer representing the central government, told the CJI bench that the NIA (National Investigating Agency) was a specialised agency to investigate national and inter-state terrorism cases and was prohibited by the NIA Act to probe into murder cases.
The case may come up for hearing again after four weeks. UNI

New Delhi, Mar 8: The Supreme Court on Thursday asked Karti Chidambaram, an accused in the INX media case, to approach Delhi High Court for relief.
Karti is seeking quashing of the summons issued against him by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). 
A three-judge bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra and also comprising Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud said, "you approach Delhi High Court for relief."
The top court also requested the Delhi High Court to set up appropriate bench or to adjudicate the Karti Chidambaram matter on Friday or day after.
Karti, in his plea, had stated that the ED was probing the case against him, by crossing its jurisdiction. 
Karti (the son of former Finance Minister in the Congress-led UPA Government, P Chidambaram) is an accused for his alleged involvement in the FIPB (Foreign Investment Promotion Board) clearance for Rs 305-crore irregular Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the INX media case in 2007, the CBI, the investigating agency, claimed. 
The apex court had earlier in its detailed order on November 20, last year allowed Karti's plea to go to the UK from December 01 to 10 last year for the purpose of his daughter's admission with certain terms and conditions.

New Delhi, Mar 7: The Supreme Court on Wednesday reserved its verdict on the Khap Panchayat issue. 
A three-judge bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra and also comprising Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud, after hearing from various parties, including from the petitioner, Shakti Vahini, central government, and many others, reserved its judgement. 
The apex court, said, it would not refer to caste or gotra or village panchayats as 'Khap' in its verdict.
The top court said, when two consenting adults get married, no relative or any assembly can oppose it through violence or threat to life of the couple.
The Centre said that threat to any two adults married by their choice should be dealt as a law and order issue, which squarely falls in the domain of the state governments.
The Centre said the honour killings are covered under murder section of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and said Law Commission's proposed bill addressing issue of honour killing was under consideration. 
Views of 23 states have been received. Response of six is awaited. Till then the apex court, if it feels, should pass directions to the states.
The Centre wants the top court to direct states to create special cell in every district to deal with honour killings. States should include a declaration by a couple who intends to have a court marriage if they apprehend threat to life and liberty.
For Centre, ASG (Additional Solicitor General) and senior Supreme Court lawyer Pinky Anand told the bench that couples fearing threat to life from relatives or Khaps must inform marriage officer at the time of registering their marriages so that the officer can intimate police to give protection to the couple.
Appearing for Khaps of Haryana, senior advocate submitted to the apex court that Khaps keep alive centuries old tradition and were the conscience keepers of the society. He said Khaps have evolved over the years and only oppose sapinda and sagotra marriages. UNI

New Delhi, Mar 7: The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted more time to the Union of India (UOI) to file an affidavit with respect to the allegations as claimed by the petitioners that Rohingyas were allegedly being pushed back from the borders.
Rohingya Muslim refugees on Wednesday asked and pleaded the central government to grant them the same status as Sri Lankan Tamil refugees.
The central government sought from the apex court for one more week's time to file its reply on the charges that BSF was allegedly using chilli spray and stun guns to push back Rohingya Muslim refugees from the border.
The prayer of the central government was allowed by the top court.
A three-judge bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra and also comprising Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud was hearing many petitions, including that of Mohammed Sallimullah and from the central government.
The top court fixed the matter for further hearing to March 19, Monday.
Sallimullah and others had knocked the doors of the apex court seeking its intervention and direction not to deport the Rohingyas to Myanmar. "If they would be deported, they may be killed in Myanmar," they pleaded.
Senior Supreme Court lawyer and noted legal expert Prashant Bhushan was appearing for the petitioner, Sallimullah In the matter and pleaded to the apex court for taking a humane approach and not to deport them to Myanmar till their petition was being heard property and in great detail. 
Bhushan had submitted to the apex court that those Rohingyas who want to come to India should not be pushed back by the Border Security Forces (BSF). The force is allegedly using chilli powder to push them. He had told the top court that this kind of alleged act was gross violation of the international conventions on refugees.
Bhushan had also submitted to the apex court that the Indian government must be prevented from stopping the Rohingyas entering India because of persecution faced in Myanmar.

New Delhi, Mar 5: Karti Chidambaram, an accused in the INX media scam, on Monday approached the Supreme Court seeking quashing of the summons issued by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) against him in the case. 
Chidambaram moved the apex court's three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra and also comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, seeking quashing of the summons issued by the ED in the case. 
The court said it would hear the plea tomorrow. 
Chidambaram, presently in the CBI custody, stated in his plea that the ED is probing the case against him by crossing its jurisdiction.

New Delhi, Feb 22: Karti Chidambaram -- an accused in the INX media case and son of former union minister P Chidambaram -- on Thursday requested the Supreme Court to urgently hear the Enforcement Directorate's summons against him.
The apex court three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra and also comprising Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud, said, we would hear it tomorrow (Friday).
Karti had moved the apex court against the ED's summons against him for March 1.
Karti is an accused for his alleged involvement in the FIPB (Foreign Investment Promotion Board) clearance for Rs 305-crore irregular Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the INX media case in 2007, the CBI, the investigating agency, claimed.
