Mumbai, Jun 25 :  Actor Kiara Advani will play the lead role in Netflix's new Indian original film "Guilty", to be produced by filmmaker Karan Johar.

The project will mark yet another collaboration between the actor and the producer after the 2018 film "Lust Stories", which was released by Netflix on its platform.

To be directed by Ruchi Narain, "Guilty" explores the different versions of truth that emerge when a small-town girl accuses the college heartthrob of rape.

Seen through the eyes of his musician girlfriend, this story makes us question who is truly "guilty" in such circumstances.

Narain is best known for writing screenplays of films such as "Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi" and "Calcutta Mail". As a director, she has helmed films like "Kal: Yesterday and Tomorrow" and "Hanuman Da' Damdaar".

The drama film will be produced by Johar's Dharmatic, the digital content arm of the filmmaker's Dharma Production.

The movie is slated to release on Netflix later this year.                     [Agencies]

New Delhi, Sep 6: Bollywood celebrities such as Karan Johar and Hansal Mehta welcomed the Supreme Court's judgement Thursday decriminalising consensual gay sex, calling it a historic victory for equal rights and a proud moment for the country.

A five-judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court unanimously decriminalised part of the 158-year-old colonial law under Section 377 of the IPC which criminalises consensual unnatural sex.

The bench, headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra, struck down Section 377 as being violative of right to equality.

Director Hansal Mehta, who made "Aligarh", a true-life inspired film about in Aligarh Muslim University professor Ramchandra Siras, who faced discrimination for being gay, called the verdict a "new beginning".

"A new beginning. The law is gone. The Supreme Court has done what parliament failed to do. Now it's time for attitudes to change. Let's rejoice but let us also reflect. This is a new beginning. #Sec377verdict," he tweeted.

Filmmaker Karan Johar also hailed the verdict.

"Historical judgment!!!! So proud today! Decriminalising homosexuality and abolishing #Section377 is a huge thumbs up for humanity and equal rights! The country gets its oxygen back!," he wrote on Twitter.

Actor Arjun Kapoor said,"Sanity prevails for once we can believe we have some sensible decision makers and lawmakers available to this generation. #Section377 gone with the wind."

Actor Sonam Kapoor said she was tears of joy for the LGBTQI community.

"One day there won't be any labels and we will all live in utopia," she added.

"Aligarh" scriptwrite Apurva Asrani said it has taken 71 years for the community to find its freedom but their voice can no longer be suppressed.

"At the stroke of the mid-day hour, as the conscience of many slept, India's LGBTQ awoke to light & freedom. This moment came 71 years too late history, 71 yrs after our brethren attained freedom; but the soul of a community, long suppressed, has found utterance. Congratulations!," Asrani said.

Actor Swara Bhaskar said the verdict showed that popular morality cannot suppress constitutional rights.

"Yayeee!! Good on you Hon'be #SupremeCourt & thank you! I hope the citizens of #India are listening! Majoritarian views and popular morality cannot dictate constitutional rights. We have to vanquish prejudice, embrace inclusion and ensure equal rights," she wrote.

Actor Nimrat Kaur wrote on Twitter, "RIP #Section377. Happy birthday 2018 !! Equal love. Equal lives. Proud Indian today."

Farhan Akhtar said the verdict was "about time".

"Bye bye 377. Thank you #SupremeCourt #abouttime #nomorediscrimination #loveislove @MardOfficial," he tweeted.

Actor Ayushmann Khurrana also celebrated the death of Section 377.

"The new sunshine of this day is that of a progressive India. Love all!," he said.

Actor Kalki Koechlin wrote, "So happy today, thank goodness for the rainbow (and all the lawyers that helped put it there!)," she wrote.

Mumbai, Aug 24: Bagging a Karan Johar directorial so early in her career was a dream come true for Bhumi Pednekar who believes it's a big opportunity to be a part of his next "Takht".

Directed by Johar, "Takht" also stars Kareena Kapoor, Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Vicky Kaushal, Janhvi Kapoor and Anil Kapoor.

"It was a dream come true. I didn't expect to bag a Karan Johar film so soon in my career. I always hoped I would work with him, he's a prolific filmmaker. He has really changed the game

"He has a great vision. I was surprised when it happened... I immediately told my parents," Bhumi told.

"Takht" is set in Mughal era and chronicles the story of two warring brothers.

While Bhumi is tight-lipped about her role, the "Dum Laga Ke Haisha" star says she's happy that the films she's doing align with her sensibilities.

"When I started out, I didn't realise I would get a chance to have an effect on so many people. I've been lucky to get work I believe in and which completely goes with my sensibilities, ideas and beliefs," she says.

The actor, who has featured in films like "Shubh Mangal Saavdhan" and "Toilet: Ek Prem Katha", says she constantly looks for challenges and her approach to work hasn't changed since her film debut in 2015.

"I am an actor, a performer and I always take up work which will keep me on my toes. It should make me say 'How will I do this, will I convince people?' I still work as hard as I did during my first film.

"My films are doing well and I feel happy but I'm also constantly thinking what's next. How do I better myself, it's about constant improvement. I introspect a lot. I am super critical of myself. I am very tough to impress," she adds.

The actor, who recently launched autumn winter collection of Raisin, says in the age of airport and gym looks there is a pressure to look good but ultimately one should rely on what's comfortable to them.

"There's a pressure to be true to yourself. Very often you get confused because there are so many opinions and suggestions. But I've realised everyone is an individual and you have got to do what you are comfortable in," she added.

Mumbai, Aug 7: Filmmaker Karan Johar has helmed some of the biggest romantic films of this generation but the director says he is yet to make a movie he entirely loves.

Karan, who debuted with "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai", and went on to direct films like "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham", "My Name is Khan", "Ae Dil Hai Mushkil", says he often cringes when he sees some portions of his work.

"In retrospect when I look back and see some parts of my movies I cringe and feel terrible that I actually subjected an audience to those portions. Some of them got fortunate, other parts in those films made them reach a certain success mark," Karan said.

"I'm not proud and happy with each and everyone of them. I am yet to make a film that I entirely love," he added.

He was speaking at the launch of his radio show "Calling Karan" season 2 on Ishq 104.8 FM. On the show, the director gives love advice to callers but says he never takes a cue to help people from his films.

"No, what we show in the movies is ridiculous. You can't possibly ruin people's lives by giving those situations. Those are meant for cinema halls but not for people," he said.

Karan said he is so honest with his advice that often he has broken relationships.

"We have a disclaimer in the beginning that I'm not a professionally trained individual so my advice should be taken at that level. But I give extremely sincere advice and I've broken a few relationships" he added.

Mumbai, Aug 7: Filmmaker Karan Johar says behind every good actor there is a broken heart, otherwise it is difficult to perform the way they do on screen.

Johar says without a personal heartbreak, it is impossible to bring out emotions on celluloid.

"I think actors who haven't had broken hearts don't perform the way they should. I feel if you are a good actor you must have had a broken heart. It's not possible otherwise for you to depict a certain kind of emotion on celluloid," Johar said at a panel discussion here last night.

He was joined by filmmaker Imtiaz Ali, actor Neha Dhupia and TV personality Ranvijay Singha.

The "Ae Dil Hai Mushkil" director says it is easy to identify someone who is trying hard to bring out emotions without actually having been through a heartbreak.

"Sometimes your eyes do depict your heart story. Many of them whose eyes speak volume, they've been through that journey in life. You know when the actor hasn't been through this and is merely touching the surface. There's no feel, because feel comes from history," he added.

To which Imtiaz quipped, "We also know that some actors are trying to go through that experience (heartbreak) to become better actors."

Karan replied, "Many a time they do that purposely. Traumatise themselves so that they perform better."

The discussion was part of the launch of Karan's radio show "Calling Karan" season 2 on Ishq 104.8 FM.

The director says there's nothing to worry about a broken heart as it can "empower you in so many ways."

"Sometimes when something breaks, it solidifies you to a larger extent. Jump into it, so what if you won't get reciprocated with the same amount of love, if the intensity doesn't match yours. But what you will go through, the feeling of love will nurture you in many ways."

Mumbai, Jun 11 : Filmmaker Karan Johar says whenever he is launching a star kid, his thought is to make then go beyond their name and make their own identity.

Karan is launching Sridevi's daughter Janhvi and actor Shahid Kapoor's half-brother, Ishaan, with "Dhadak", an adaptation of Marathi blockbuster "Sairat".

When asked, what is the most important bit he keeps in mind while launching new talent and especially star kids, Karan told reporters, "That they go beyond their name and make an identity of their own. That's our responsibility and even theirs."

Hinting at the nepotism debate that started with actor Kangana Ranaut calling him "the flag-bearer of nepotism", Johar said, "Nowadays, there is so much debate about name, but people forget that even behind a name there is passion and hard work. It's not easy to face the camera, to come in front of the media. They are kids. And we put a label to them.

"There is a word (nepotism), it has run for two years. I wouldn't even name it because I will be promoting the same concept. I will just say that people are here not because of that name but because of their hardwork."

"Dhadak" is directed by Shashank Khaitan, who previously helmed "Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania" and "Badrinath Ki Dulhania".

Khaitan said when he saw "Sairat", he kept watching the film on loop and was blown away. When it came to the adaptation though, he was "extremely nervous."

"It was a story wanting to be told all across the country. It is so relatable. I want to make the story my own and to pay the best homage to 'Sairat'. I'm really proud of 'Dhadak' and these two kids," the director said.

When Karan questioned if he was nervous about showing the film to "Sairat" director Nagraj Manjule, Shashank said, "I am extremely excited. I started out with remake of DDLJ, so I am not really scared."

The film's music has been composed by Ajay-Atul who were also behind the original soundtrack of "Sairat".

Two songs from the original film "Zingaat" and "Yaad Lagla", have been retained in the adaptation while two new tracks have been added.

"To write it in Hindi and retain the interest for both the songs required a lot of hard work from my side because both the songs are national phenomenon," lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya said.

"Dhadak", co-produced by Zee, is scheduled to release on July 20. PTI
