Ludhiana, Oct 10 (PTI) Four persons were killed in a fire that broke out in a hosiery factory at Kalyan Nagar here Wednesday morning, police said.

The deceased were labourers who were working in the factory at the time of incident, police said.

The exact cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained, police inspector Surinder Chopra.

Around half a dozen fire fighting vehicles were pressed into service to put out the fire, he said, adding that it took them three hours to douse the flames 

The factory was located in a thickly-populated area of the city, police said.


Ludhiana, Sep 15: A court here has sentenced a man to death for killing his cousin and her mother in 2013.

The court of Additional Sessions Judge Arunvir Vashishtha pronounced the verdict on Friday.

The court in its order said the convict, Rishu Grover, "be hanged till death" for the crime.

Grover (30) had killed Heena Grover (22) and her mother Usha Rani (55) on the intervening night of May 21 and 22 in 2013 at their residence in Mohalla Fatehgunj near Baba Than Singh Chowk here in the heart of the city.

According to an FIR, Rishu and Heena were in a relationship and the accused was infuriated over Heena's marriage getting fixed with someone else.

After committing the crime, he managed to escape with cash and jewellery, as per the FIR.

Phagwara, Aug 30: A cleaner of a pick up van died in a road mishap here, police said today.

Police identified the deceased as Mohammed Sajid, 30, a resident of Focal Point area in Ludhiana. Sajid was the van's cleaner, they said.

When moving on National Highway 1 near Chachoki village on the outskirts of Phagwara, yesterday, the van's tyre burst, police said.

Sajid, who was sitting in the rear end of the vehicle, fell as the van moved out of control, the police said, adding that he died on the spot.

Sajid's body was handed over to his family after post-mortem examination, they said.

Ludhiana, Jul 24: Senior AAP leader and legislator from Dakha, H S Phoolka today said he will quit the party if it joins hands with the Congress.

He made it clear here that any understanding with the Congress party would amount to giving a clean chit to the alleged "perpetrators" of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

"I shall be the first person to quit the Aam Aadmi Party if and when it joins hands with the Congress (either) in a direct or indirect manner," Phoolka said here.

His statement comes after Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh supported senior party leader P Chidambaram's views on the need for a broad-based alliance with other opposition parties at the meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) at Delhi on Sunday.

Phoolka, a noted lawyer who has represented the riot victims in the courts, blamed the Congress for the violence that took place in the aftermath of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's assassination.

The former leader of opposition in the Punjab Assembly said he would continue to fight cases of the riot victims.

A total of 3,325 people were killed in the riots.

Ludhiana, Jun 23 : An undertrial was injured after he was allegedly attacked by some inmates at the Ludhiana central jail, police said today.

Jagjit Singh, lodged in the jail in connection with the Balachaur sacrilege incident, was allegedly attacked by five prisoners, including two gangsters, who barged into his barrack last night, they said.

He was beaten up by an iron pipe by the inmates, police said, adding that Singh's leg was broken and he also received several injuries.

Singh was admitted to a local civil hospital under security cover where his treatment was underway. His condition was stated to be stable.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Dharm Pal said after receiving the information about the incident, a team of Ludhiana police went to the central jail for investigation.

However, the police have not received any complaint from the jail authorities and thus, no case has been registered so far, Pal said. PTI





Ludhiana, Apr 27: The death toll in Ludhiana's gas cylinder blast has mounted to three with two more victims, including a child and a woman, succumbing to burn injuries.
ADCP Gurpreet Singh said here the deceased were identified as Raj (14) and Shashi Singh (36).

Ludhiana, Nov 20: A four-storey structure collapsed on Monday afternoon after a fire broke out in a plastic manufacturing factory in the building in industrial area near Suffian Chowk in this Punjab district. 
Sources said the fire was reported at 0800 hrs in Amarson Polymers. At least 15 fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the fire. Police said the building collapsed after few hours of dousing fire due to heat of burning plastic. According to police,10-15 people, including five workers of the fire department, are said to be trapped. The cause of the fire was short circuit, the sources added. UNI 

Ludhiana, Oct 17: Two unidentified assailants gunned down RSS leader Ravinder Kumar near his residence at Gagandeep colony here on Tuesday. On being informed, Commissioner of Police RN Dhoke reached the spot and initiated investigation. The incident occurred when the RSS leader was returning home after attending daily 'Shakha'. The assailants fired at Kumar indiscriminately, killing him on the spot, Mr Dhoke said. The police have cordoned off the area and registered a case against unidentified persons. UNI
