Washington, Sep 11 :  A group of some Indian-American organisations in the US has launched a campaign seeking Indian citizenship to Hindu immigrants from Bangladesh who have been left out of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam.

The group under the banner of organisations like SinghaBahini America, Global Hindu Heritage Foundation (GHHF) and NavaBanga are seeking support for the Citizenship Bill 2016, which seeks to amend the Citizenship Act, 1955 to provide citizenship to persecuted minorities from India's neighbouring nations who have come to the country for safety.

The members of the group had met Indian leaders during the recently concluded World Hindu Congress in Chicago.

"In the light of the well-intended NRC to help identify the illegal Bangladeshi immigrants who came as fortune seekers, it has come to light that a large number of Hindu population find themselves left out, said a media release issued by the group.

Based on estimates, around 1.4 million to 2.5 million Hindus find themselves in a position to be stripped of their Indian citizenship, it said.

"Forefathers of Hindu brothers and sisters had come to India because of the persecution they faced in Bangladesh, yet they had not given up their faith."

To ensure that the resources of India go to the citizens, NRC in every state is needed, but at the same time it is equally important that India protects poor Hindus from Bangladesh, the statement said.

"The Citizenship Bill, 2016 which seeks to provide Indian citizenship to persecuted minority Hindus, Sikhs and Jains who came from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan till 2014 is thus a must to showcase a historic Hindu Unity to send a message to our own people, the group said.PTI

New Delhi, Jun 14: All NRI marriages solemnised in India would need to be registered within seven days, the Ministry of Women and Child Development said today.
If the NRI marriages are not registered within seven days, the passports and visas would not be issued.
Last week, Women and Child Development (WCD) Minister Maneka Gandhi had said that the NRI marriages would need to be registered within 48 hours.
The decision for mandatory registration of marriages within seven days was taken yesterday after a group of ministers - Gandhi, Home Minister Rajnath Singh, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, met to map out legal solutions for redressing the issues faced by women in NRI marriages.
Officials at the ministry said that the discussions were held for enumerating fine details on ways to resolve the issues related to NRI marriages.
Another proposal discussed was holding the properties of NRI offenders in escrow in case they abscond abandoning their spouse. 
Escrow is a legal concept in which a financial instrument or an asset is held by a third party on behalf of two other parties that are in the process of completing a transaction.
The official said the move would require amendment of three legislations- Code of Criminal Procedure, Marriage Act and the Passports Act.
The three ministries were asked to formulate a draft legal amendments to give effect to decisions taken at the meeting. 
As of now, there is no time frame to register marriages in India. However, a Law Commission report has recommended that the time limit to register marriages should be restricted to 30 days after which a penalty of Rs 5 per day could be imposed.
The ministry had earlier constituted an Integrated Nodal Agency (INA) with representatives from the ministries of External Affairs, Home Affairs and Law and Justice to look into matrimonial disputes involving Non-Resident Indians (NRI). 
According to the recommendation of the National Commission for Women (NCW) and the decisions taken in the INA, look-out circulars are issued as per criteria defined by the MHA, for keeping a watch on arrival or departure of NRI husbands and preventing them from leaving India, the ministry had said. (PTI)

New Delhi, Jan 10: Pravasi Bandhu Welfare Trust (PBWT) has requested Indian Government to change the eligibility to obtain Aadhaar card to all Indian citizens irrespective of the residential status and permit NRIs also to take Aadhaar card.
In a letter to Sushma Swaraj, Minister of External Affairs, KV Shamsudheen, Chairman of UAE- based, Pravasi Bandhu Welfare Trust, said that NRIs were very happy to read the announcement in this regard. But two years have elapsed and nothing happened. “We all are eagerly waiting for the implementation to solve our plight,” said Mr Shamsudheen.
According to Mr Shamsudheen, two years back, while inviting the diaspora community to actively participate in India's growth story, Ms Swaraj had said that the government is considering giving Aadhaar cards to Non-Resident Indians and a decision on it will be taken soon.
Mr Shamsudheen said, “Recently the CEO of UIDIA published a circular in which he advised all Indian authorities not demand Aadhaar card from Non Resident Indians, because they are not eligible to take Aadhaar as per the current law.”
In spite of that all the authorities are demanding Aadhaar from NRIs to get gas, to get mobile SIM, to renew and to apply for driving license, to digitalize property document, to appear entrance examination, and many more, he said.
According to him, during the past two weeks many NRIs were on New Year vacation, they were struggling a lot to get all these services from the service providing departments. 'So we request you to make NRIs also eligible to take Adhaar, that is the only solution for the present difficulties.'
He said that other countries whIch have biometric identity cards, issue it to all its citizens, but only India is in the world issuing it to only residents. 'We request you, like all other countries, issue Aadhaar to all Indian citizens irrespective of their residential status.' UNI
