PM Modi condoles death of Ashwini Chopra


New Delhi, Jan 18 :  Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday condoled the death of journalist and former parliamentarian Ashwini Chopra, saying he will be remembered for his contribution to the media world.

Chopra, 63, a former MP and resident editor of Hindi daily Punjab Kesari, died on Saturday.

"Anguished by the passing away of Shri Ashwini Kumar Chopra ji. He will be remembered for his contribution to the media world. He worked diligently as a public representative and undertook many community welfare initiatives. My thoughts are with his family and friends. Om Shanti," the prime minister wrote on Twitter.

Ahmedabad, Mar 24 :   Surendranagar MP Devji Fatehpara, who was denied a ticket by the BJP for the April-May Lok Sabha polls, blamed two party colleagues for his ouster.

The BJP, which Saturday released a list of 15 candidates, dropped Fatehpara from Surendranagar and replaced him with Mahendra Munjpara.
 
Talking to reporters, Fatehpara said he had been denied a ticket at the behest of former minister Jayanti Kavadiya and MLA Dhanji Patel, a charge both of them denied.

"I have been denied a ticket at the behest of Jayanti Kavadiya and Dhanji Patel. Kavadiya has been against me for a long time. Now, he has got the company of Dhanji Patel. Both of them brought in Munjpara because they wanted someone who is obedient, someone who follows their orders," Fatehpara told reporters in Rajkot.

While Kavadiya, a former MLA from Dhragandhra seat of Surendranagar, was a minister in the state government prior to 2017, Dhanji Patel won the 2017 Assembly polls from Wadhwan.

"The BJP has done injustice by denying me a ticket, despite the fact that I have done so much for the constituency and for its people," Fatehpara claimed.

He also threatened to resign from the BJP and work for the Congress candidate in the Lok Sabha polls.

"In the coming days, I have called a meeting of Koli community leaders. If my community asks me to resign from the party, I will follow the order," said Fatehpara.

He added he would put in his "best efforts" to ensure the victory of the Congress candidate (from Surendranagar) if his community asked him to do so.

Both Fatehpara and Munjpara are from the Koli community.

Patel and Kavadiya denied Fatehpara's allegations, claiming the decision to drop the sitting Surendranagar MP was taken by the party's top leadership.

"I am just an MLA. I don't have any say in who would get a ticket and who won't. It is the parliamentary board which takes such decisions," said Patel.

In his defence, Kavadiya said, "These allegations are baseless. The party takes decisions on allotting or denying tickets. I do not have any such powers."

The state goes to polls in a single phase on April 23.                                   [Agencies]

 Ahmedabad, Mar 5 :  Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday used the air strike analogy to underscore his will to take on terrorism emanating from Pakistan.

Speaking after launching a pension scheme for the unorganised sector, Modi said the opposition wants to dislodge him.

"They (opposition) want to strike Modi, but I want to strike on terror," Modi said. "They want to remove this `chowkidar but I want to fight poverty," he added.

"The honesty of your 'chowkidar' is troubling those in opposition. That is the reason they are saying Modi hatao, (remove Modi) while I am saying that I want to fight poverty and dishonesty. I am standing firm due to your support, Modi said.

Taking potshots at the attempts to cobble up a mahagathbandhan (grand alliance) against the BJP, Modi said the opposition parties are forming a 'mahamilavat' (highly adulterated) combine to remove him.

"But I am working to safeguard interest of workers and farmers. I am also working to provide security, he said.

Modi, who launched the Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Mandhan Yojana pension scheme, targeted Congress president Rahul Gandhi over poverty, saying only those oblivious to sleeping hungry at night can think that it is a "state of mind".

For some, poverty is just an opportunity to click photos, Modi said, sharpening his attack on the Congress chief.

"This scheme is aimed at uplift of the section of society which has been ignored and left at the mercy of God.

They (Congress) gave slogans of garibi hatao (end poverty).

Some projected themselves as messiah of workers. But during their tenure they did not launch such a scheme, he said.

"They ruled the country for 55 years and collected votes in the name of poor," he said.

"They thought that poverty is a mental state. See how is this neta who says that there is nothing like poverty but a mental state," Modi said, targeting the Congress president.

"For them poverty is just an opportunity to click pictures. Only those oblivious to sleeping hungry even for one night can think that it is a state of mind, Modi said, in an obvious reference to Gandhi's 2013 statement that poverty is a state of mind.

"What they could not do in 55 years, this 'chaiwala' did in 55 months by bringing such a scheme," Modi said.

The communists got opportunity to form government in many states but could not bring such a pension scheme for the unorganised workers, Modi said.

Such a scheme has been launched for the first time for unorganised sector workers in India, he said.

"This scheme has been launched by our government as a tribute to the unorganised sector workers, who can earn some money till their body is fit but are worried about what will happen to them when they get old, Modi said.

Under this scheme, unorganised workers will get a pension of Rs 3000. I am told that over 14 lakh workers have been enrolled under the scheme, Modi said.           [Agencies]

Lucknow, Dec 15 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit on Sunday Rae Bareli, his first trip to the traditional seat of the Gandhi family.
He will also visit Allahabad to review preparations for the Kumbh Mela to be held in the city next year.

Uttar Pradesh Bharatiya Janata Party media co-incharge Navin Srivastava told PTI, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be visiting Rae Bareli and then he will be in Allahabad." 

Modi will hold a public meeting and flag off the Humsafar Express on Sunday, an official said.

According to district officials, the prime minister will lay the foundation stone and inaugurate projects worth Rs 1,100 crore during the visit.

On Thursday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had visited Rae Bareli to oversee preparations for the visit. He also took a tour of the Rail Coach Factory in the district.

The prime minister's visit is being seen as a strategy of the BJP to pin the Congress leadership in their respective constituencies in the 2019 general election. Rae Bareli is represented in the Lok Sabha by former Congress chief and UPA (United Progressive Alliance) chairperson Sonia Gandhi.

Modi's visit was planned before the counting of votes polled in the five states was taken up on December 11, following which the Congress party threw out BJP governments in three states - Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

Sonia Gandhi has not visited Rae Bareli since April. Before that, she visited the constituency in mid-2016. Also, she did not campaign in the constituency during the 2017 UP election, after she developed a health issue during a roadshow in Varanasi.

The Congress has accused the Modi government of derailing the development of Rae Bareli.

Union Finance minister and Rajya Sabha member Arun Jaitley had recently spent his Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLAD) funds on developmental works in the constituency.

Modi is likely to visit Uttar Pradesh again on December 29 to issue a commemorative postal stamp on backward caste Maharaja Suheldev Rajbhar and lay the foundation stone of infrastructure projects in Ghazipur.

Modi took to Twitter to wish Parrikar and appreciated the chief minister's "hardworking nature" and commitment towards development of the coastal state.

"Birthday greetings to my friend and Goa's CM @manoharparrikarji. Parrikarji is known for his compassionate, down to earth and hardworking nature. He is extremely passionate about Goa's development," the PM tweeted.

"The entire nation prays for Parrikarji's good health," he added.

Parrikar's family members, BJP workers and his well-wishers held a special prayer at the Mahalaxmi Temple in Panaji in the morning to pray for his health and speedy recovery.

His elder son Utpal Parrikar, along with state BJP spokesperson and former Panaji MLA Siddharth Kunkolienkar, led the prayers at the temple.

Parrikar, who is currently recuperating at his private residence near the state capital, will not celebrate his birthday in public, but the Bharatiya Janata Party has decided to organise various events to mark the occasion.

This is the first time since 1994 that Parrikar is not celebrating his birthday in public after becoming an MLA over two decades ago, Kunkolienkar had said Wednesday.

"Even when he was the Defence minister, he used to fly to the state to celebrate his birthday," said Kunkolienkar, who had resigned from the Panaji Assembly constituency to make way for Parrikar to get elected in 2017.

The BJP's Panaji unit has organised a blood donation camp at party headquarters, which has been a practice since 2006, on the occasion.

Parrikar has been recuperating at his private residence at Dona Paula near here since October 14 when he was discharged from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

On the 17th anniversary of the attack, Modi took to Twitter to recall the courage of the security personnel.

"We salute the valour of those who were martyred during the dastardly attack on our Parliament on this day in 2001. Their courage and heroism inspires every Indian," he said. 

On December 13, 2001, five gunmen stormed the Parliament complex and opened indiscriminate fire.

Five Delhi Police personnel, a woman Central Reserve Police official, two Parliament watch and ward staff, a gardener and a camera person were among those who killed in the attack.

A good number of jokes are also targetted at Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who had campaigned extensively for the BJP during the elections. Several viral memes take a swipe at his numerous 'name-changing' ideas and one of those shows the firebrand leader telling Prime Minister Narendra Modi that he would change the meaning of 'defeat' to 'victory'.

Another meme showed Adityanath, who had talked about changing the names of cities like Hyderabad during his election campaign, suggesting changing the name of Congress party itself to the 'BJP'.

But, a tweet said it was time for Adityanath himself to again become 'Ajay Singh Bisht', his earlier name.

Divya Spandana of the Congress party's social media team retweeted an old tweet of Modi from December 2003, wherein the then Gujarat chief minister had said that the results of five states showed the way the wind was blowing and it was beginning of 'Congress-Mukt Bharat', but she replaced the word 'Congress' with the 'BJP'.

Celebrity author Shobhaa De tweeted, "Not only has Pappu passed, he has earned an instant PhD. Let's hope he stays the course and doesn't get distracted. India needs him to see the 2019 elections through." 

Actress Swara Bhasker tweeted, "Looks like BJP got 'Pappu'd three times over". Congress chief Rahul Gandhi is often referred to as 'Pappu' on social media by right-wing trolls, while some BJP leaders have also called him by this name.

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said, "No wonder the BJP is so upset today. The voters just gave them a triple talaq", referring to the Congress emerging victorious in Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.

He also referred to Madhya Pradesh Congress leader Kamal Nath's statement that he was ensuring personal delivery of the party's stake-claim letter to the state's Governor, saying it was good that the party was not relying on the "Governor's fax machine in MP", taking a swipe at a recent fax machine controversy in Jammu and Kashmir.

Former J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah also tweeted that the Congress leaders in Madhya Pradesh were "smart people" as they were not faxing their letter to Raj Bhawan in Bhopal.

One of the viral memes blamed Yogi for the BJP losses and said it was his "caste certificate" to Lord Hanuman which hurt the party and the results are like a revenge by the monkey-god on Tuesday, a day when Hanuman is worshipped.

Former Uttar Pradesh chief minister and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav tweeted in Hindi, "Abki baar, kho di sarkar" (This time, lost the government), punning it on the popular BJP slogan of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, 'Abki baar, Modi sarkar'.

India is set to increase its public health spending to 2.5 per cent of its gross domestic product (GDP) by 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Wednesday.


New Delhi, Dec 12 (PTI) India is set to increase its public health spending to 2.5 per cent of its gross domestic product (GDP) by 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Wednesday.

He also said India is one of the first countries to advocate focused attention on adolescence and to implement a full-fledged health promotion and prevention programme for adolescents.

Addressing the 2018 Partners' Forum here, he said the central government is set to increase its spending on public health to 2.5 per cent of the GDP.

As of now, the country spends 1.15 per cent of the GDP on health.

The Partners' Forum meet this year will focus on improving multi-sectoral action for results, sharing country solutions and capturing the best practices and knowledge within the health sector and among related sectors. 

Modi said that under Mission Indradhaush, a massive immunisation programme, India reached 32.8 million children and 8.4 million pregnant women over the last three years.

"We have made a lot of progress in the last few years and yet a lot remains to be done. From bigger budgets to better outcomes and from mindset change to monitoring, there are a lot of interventions required," he told the gathering which comprised experts from several countries.

New Delhi, Sep 17 :  Prime Minister Narendra Modi will celebrate his 68th birthday on Monday in his parliamentary constituency Varanasi where he will interact with school children.
Modi will reach Narur village this afternoon where he will interact with children of a primary school, which is aided by a non-profit organisation, Room to Read.

Later, at the Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW) campus, the prime minister will interact with students of the Kashi Vidyapeeth and the children assisted by them, according to the Prime Minister's Office.

President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and BJP chief Amit Shah were among the first to greet him.

"Birthday greetings to our Prime Minister @narendramodi. Wish him a long life and many years of dedicated service to the people of the country," Kovind tweeted.

Naidu, who is in Malta, called up Modi to wish him on his birthday, the Vice President Secretariat said.

"Warm Birthday wishes to Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. India is making rapid strides under his visionary leadership and taking its rightful place in the comity of nations. May he be blessed with long and healthy life," said Naidu's Twitter handle.

Shah hailed Modi's leadership, saying India under him has become synonymous with development and that he has infused energy into every section of society like never before.

India has a government under Modi, which is committed to the development of the poor, farmers and every section of society, the BJP chief said in a tweet.

Jaipur, 7 July : Launching a scathing attack on the Congress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said the party is now being called a bail gaadi as several of its leaders are out on bail.

Several leaders who are called stalwarts of the Congress and former ministers are out on bail these days, Modi said at a public rally here, punning on the Hindi term for a bullock cart.

He said people were well aware of the intentions of the Congress party and had started calling it a bail gaadi .

Making an apparent reference to the surgical strike into Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in 2016, he criticised the Congress for questioning the capabilities of the Army.

It is unfortunate that political opponents also committed a sin by raising questions on the capabilities of the Army. This has never happened before and the people will not forgive those who are doing this kind of politics, he said.

The prime minister said his government had resolved the issue of one rank, one pension for defence personnel.

Modi was addressing a rally of beneficiaries of welfare schemes run by the Centre and the state government in BJP-ruled Rajasthan, where assembly elections are scheduled later this year.

Jaipur, 7 Jul :  Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived here today to address the beneficiaries of various welfare schemes of the BJP governments at the Centre and in the state.

Modi arrived in a special aircraft that landed at the Sanganer airport. He was welcomed by Rajasthan Governor Kalyan Singh and Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje.

Thereafter, the primer minister left for the SMS stadium in a helicopter of the Indian Air Force.

He is scheduled to address the rally at the 'Amroodon Ka Baagh', which is close to the stadium.

Elaborate security arrangements have been made for the event. Sensitive areas in the city are covered by CCTV cameras, and temporary control rooms will alert the field units if they spot any suspicious activity.

The administration expects a gathering of about 2.5 lakh beneficiaries of 12 schemes run by the BJP governments at the Centre and in the state, where the party faces a crucial assembly election later this year.PTI

New Delhi, Jul 6 :  Talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bhutanese counterpart Tshering Tobgay are underway, during which defence, security and strategic cooperation between the two neighbouring countries are expected to be discussed.

Tobgay, who arrived here on a three-day visit yesterday, met Modi at the Hyderabad House.

"Exemplary relationship worth celebrating! PM @narendramodi welcomes Prime Minister of #Bhutan @tsheringtobgay to India during the Golden Jubilee Year of our relationship, which is based on shared perceptions, utmost trust, goodwill and understanding," Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar tweeted.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had called on Tobgay yesterday and discussed ways to deepen the bilateral cooperation.

In their talks, Modi and Tobgay are also expected to deliberate on the situation at the Doklam tri-junction, the site of 73-day-long standoff between Indian and Chinese armies last year.

In February, Tobgay had visited Guwahati to participate in an investors' summit on the sidelines of which he and Modi had held talks.

Troops of India and China were locked in a 73-day-long standoff in Doklam from June 16 last year after the Indian side stopped construction of a road at the disputed Doklam tri-junction by the Chinese army.

Bhutan and China have a dispute over Doklam. The face-off ended on August 28. China and Bhutan are engaged in talks over the resolution of the dispute in the area.PTI

Maghar (Sant Kabir Nagar) (UP), Jun 28 : Prime Minister Narendra today offered 'chadar' at the 'mazar' of Sant Kabir Das and laid the foundation stone of a research institute name after the 15th century mystic poet.


The prime minister was at a programme to mark the 500th death anniversary of the poet.

Modi took a round of the mausoleum of Sant Kabir Das and offered 'chadar'. He later laid the foundation stone of the Sant Kabir Academy, a research institute that is expected to come up at a cost of Rs. 24 crore.

He also visited the Sant Kabir cave and unveiled a plaque to mark the laying of the foundation stone of the Kabir Academy, which will highlight the saint's teachings and philosophy.

The prime minister earlier landed at Lucknow airport and flew to Maghar.PTI

New Delhi, Jun 23 :  Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan today accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of consistently ignoring Kerala and its demands.



Vijayan's, who was yesterday denied permission to meet the prime minister, also alleged the Centre was not paying heed to the country's federal structure.

The PM has been ignoring Kerala. The Centre's aversion to Kerala's demands is leading to the collapse of several industries in the state. When we needed to see the PM and submit our requests, we were not allowed to do so, Vijayan said.

"We need a satisfied state and a strong Centre in the federal system," Vijayan said, adding that the response of the previous governments to the state's demands was not as bad as it was now.

For instance, in the case of the Kanjikode rail coach factory, our requests were completely ignored. The Centre's involvement must indicate a basic understanding of the federal system and the states' needs. Unfortunately, the central government does not recognise this need. The previous governments understood this. I am not saying that they took all necessary measures. But things were not as bad as they are now, he said.

An all-party delegation from Kerala had yesterday sought permission to meet the prime minister to convey their grievances over the reduced ration allocations to meet the food security needs of the state. They were instead asked to meet the Union minister concerned.

Vijayan had last week extended support to his Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal, who was on a sit-in at the Lieutenant Governor's office, against the alleged strike of bureaucrats.PTI

Bhubaneswar, Jun 21 : Hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaching out to farmers of Odisha through video bridge, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also interacted with the cultivators and assured them that all the issues faced by them would be addressed soon.

As part of his outreach programme of direct interaction with beneficiaries of his pet schemes, Modi had spoken to farmers across the country via video-conferencing yesterday.

The chief minister too interacted with the farmers after inaugurating a training programme for them at Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) here yesterday.

Inaugurating the training programme, the chief minister said, "As part of the programme, two farmers from a panchayat will be imparted training in modern agricultural practices at the OUAT. After training, these farmers will in turn, train other farmers in their respective areas to implement the same for enhancing agricultural production." 

The programme will cover farmers of all the 314 blocks of the state, the chief minister said.

The farmers apprised him of the problems faced by them, including distress sale of their produce and shortage of cold storage facilities.

The chief minister assured them that all the issues faced by the cultivators would be addressed soon.

The prime minister had interacted with the farmers of Angul district through videoconferencing on use of modern methods in cultivation.

During the talks, a farmer of Durgapur, Benudhar Pradhan, apprised the PM of the success achieved by him through modern agricultural practices and integrated farming.



Pradhan said while his father used to earn Rs 40,000-50,000 per year, he has been earning about Rs 4-5 lakh per annum.

The prime minister also interacted with Binapani Rout of Kusasinga village in the district who opted for modern farming methods after her husband became physically-challenged following an accident.PTI

New Delhi, Jun 19 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi will interact with farmers tomorrow via video conference to flag his government's major schemes aimed at boosting their income, and also address farm sector issues.

The interaction with farmers will be the sixth such interaction, that began on the eve of Modi government completing four years in office.

"The interaction will provide an opportunity to hear directly from the farmers. Initiatives related to doubling farmers' income will also be discussed," a statement issued by Prime Minister's Office said today.

The interaction will be broadcast directly by Krishi Vigyan Kendra's, Common Service Centers (CSC), Doordarshan, DD Kissan and Aakashvaani from all over the country, it said.

"People will also be able to interact with the Prime Minister through 'Narendra Modi App'," the statement said.

In the previous interactions, the Prime Minister had heard beneficiaries of free cooking gas (LPG) scheme, financial inclusion initiative, start-up enterpreneurs, health scheme and Digitial India.

New Delhi, Jun 7 :  Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said the sanitation coverage in the country has increased from 38 per cent to nearly 80 per cent and asserted that the 'Swachh Bharat Mission' is playing a central role in creating a healthy India.


Interacting with the beneficiaries of the 'Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana' (PMBJP) and affordable cardiac stents and knee implants through video bridge, the prime minister said that more than 3.5 lakh villages in the country have declared themselves open defecation free.

"Cleanliness is considered to be first necessity for a healthy life. We initiated the campaign to construct toilets at home. This campaign for cleanliness is being taken forward successfully by 125 crore people of the country. 

"Look at its results. Sanitation coverage has gone up from 38 per cent to around 80 per cent. So if it was 40 per cent it has (it means) doubled. More than 3.5 lakh villages have declared themselves open defecation free in India," he said.

"The scheme is playing a central role in creating a healthy India," Modi said.

Referring to a United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) study, he said that those villages which are open defecation free, Rs 50,000 which would have otherwise been used for other works, is being saved on an average per family.

Otherwise the same amount would have gone into treatment of various diseases and commuting to and fro to the hospital, among others.

Interacting with the prime minister, the beneficiaries explained how the 'Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana' brought down the cost of the medicines and made it affordable.

The beneficiaries also talked about how reduced prices of heart stent and knee transplants have changed their life.PTI

Singapore, Jun 1 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi today met his Singaporean counterpart Lee Hsien Loong and discussed bilateral ties.

Modi, who arrived here yesterday on a three-day visit, also called on Singapore President Halimah Yacob. 

After his arrival at the presidential palace Istana, he was accorded a ceremonial welcome.

"Prime Minister Modi was accorded a ceremonial welcome on his arrival at Istana - Presidential Palace of Singapore. Millennia old ties now powered by partnership in innovation and technology," said Raveesh Kumar, Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs.

Modi received a 'guard of honour' at the palace. 

During his talks with Singaporean leaders, Modi discussed ways to further strengthen bilateral ties. 

Modi is in Singapore on the last leg of his three-nation tour. He earlier visited Indonesia and Malaysia.PTI

New Delhi, May 29 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said that loans worth Rs 6 lakh crore have been given to 12 crore beneficiaries under the Mudra scheme as he accused the previous governments of tokenism and not enough for small businesses.
Unlike the loan melas organised by previous governments, he said that the Pradhan Manrti Mudra Yojana (PMMY) has helped and encouraged people to tread the unconventional path, fulfil their dreams and generate jobs for others by setting up small businesses.

PMMY was launched by the Prime Minister on April 8, 2015, for providing loans of up to Rs 10 lakh to the non-corporate, non-farm small/micro enterprises.

Last fiscal, the government extended Rs 2.53 lakh crore credit under the Mudra Yojana, while Rs 5.73 lakh crore has been extended in last 3 years.

Interacting with Mudra beneficiaries from across the country through a video conference, the Prime Minister said that under the loan melas, which were organised with great fanfare, loans were provided to selected persons and no one bothered about their repayment.

Do you know 25-30 years ago there used to be loan melas for political benefit and people who were close to politicians used to gets loans with no intension of returning them. There used to be great fan fare but no one bothered to find the end results, he said.

The NDA government did not organise any loan melas or gave space to intermediaries. It trusted the country's youth and women to get loans directly from the banks and start their own small business, the Prime Minister said.

We trusted small businesses, we trusted business skills of first time entrepreneurs and loans were given under the Mudra Yojana for setting up their own venture, Modi said.

The government developed the new product 'Mudra' with a view to provide opportunity to poor people and small businesses to obtain loans from banks without any collateral to either start small enterprise or expand the existing ones, he said.

Mudra has created opportunities for self-employment and is acting as job-multiplier, Modi said, adding that as many as 12 crore received Rs 6 lakh crore in loans under the scheme.

"Out of the 12 crore beneficiaries, 28 per cent or 3.25 crore are first-time entrepreneurs," he said in his interaction with beneficiaries of this scheme.

He also said 74 per cent, or 9 crore, borrowers are women and 55 per cent belong to the SC/ST and OBC category.

Mudra Yojana is not just a self employment scheme but it acts as job multiplier as it has created jobs as several new ventures got started, Modi said.

Recalling the days of Licence Raj, Modi said, earlier loans were provided to rich people on the recommendations of high and mighty, and poor people without connections were left out of the formal credit system.

They were forced to take money from the money lenders who charged usurious rates of interest. But Mudra Yojana has taken out the youth from the clutches of money lenders.

There was a time when the country's Finance Minister would do every bit possible to get loans sanctioned for top corporates. On the other hand small business would never come out of the clutches of money lenders who used to charge interest rate as high 40 per cent, Modi said.

Beneficiaries from Maharashtra, Karnataka, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and West Bengal participated in the interaction with the Prime Minister.

Taking a dig at past governments, the Prime Minister said, "people of this country heard poverty alleviation slogans in the past but nothing happened on the ground. As a result, trust of millions was shaken."

"Mudra has restored the confidence of people in the system as there are no discrimination for getting loans under the scheme," he said.

It has brought many poor citizens into financial mainstream, he said, adding that NBFCs and microfinance institutions have also become part of this, other than banks.

Mudra is one of the schemes under which loans were sanctioned beyond the target.

"If the youth of the country had got schemes like Mudra decades ago, I believe the huge migration to cities would not have taken place," he said.

He also urged Mudra entrepreneurs to promote digital transaction and generate job. He exhorted such small business to keep advancing goal and not be satiated with the whatever they have achieved.PTI
