New Delhi, Nov 20: Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi expressed grief
over the demise of senior party leader and former Union Minister Priya Ranjan
Dasmunsi on Monday.
In her condolence message, Ms Gandhi said that Dasmunsi was a
devout political activist and one of the tallest leaders of West Bengal in
recent times, adding that that his “immense work at the grassroots would be
remembered for posterity”. “Despite his prolonged illness, he remained popular
in imagination of his people. His death is an irreparable loss to the Congress
party and the country,” she said. She also expressed solidarity with his wife Deepa Dasmunsi,
family and supporters. Mr Gandhi also condoled the demise and in his
tweet said, “We will miss Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi ji. A brilliant political mind
and a good human being. Bengal and the Congress party have lost a tall leader.
Our thoughts are with Deepa ji today”. The former Union Minister passed
away at the Apollo Hospital at the age of 72 here. After suffering a
massive stroke in 2008, Dasmunsi was in coma since then. UNI

veteran Congress leader Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi here.
In a tweet, the Prime Minister said, “Shri Priya
Ranjan Dasmunsi was a popular leader with rich political and administrative
experience. He did notable work to popularise football in India. Saddened by
his demise.” “My thoughts are with Deepa Dasmunsi ji and family as well as his
supporters,” he added. The Congress leader and former union minister Priya Ranjan
Dasmunsi was in a coma since 2008. Dasmunsi, who was Parliamentary Affairs
Minister in the Manmohan Singh-led UPA government, suffered a massive stroke in
2008 which left him paralysed and unable to speak. He is survived by his
wife Deepa Dasmunsi and son Priyadeep Dasmuni. He was first sworn in as
Union Minister in 1985. Dasmunsi had also served as the President of All
India Football Federation for close to 20 years. UNI

After suffering a massive stroke in 2008, Dasmunsi was in
coma since then. According to party officials, the mortal remains of the
late leader will be brought to the AICC headquarters at 1500 hrs, where people
can pay their last respect. Dasmunsi was a Member of Parliament
from 1999 to 2009 and represented the Raiganj constituency in West Bengal. During
the UPA-I, he had held important portfolios like the Parliamentary Affairs and
Information and Broadcasting Minister from 2004 to 2008. He had also served as
the president of the All India Football Federation for almost 20 years. UNI
