Higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir received fresh snowfall on Thursday while the plains witnessed intermittent rains as the minimum temperature settled below the freezing point at most places in the Valley and Ladakh region.  Snowfall has been recorded in the higher areas of the valley like Qazigund, Kokernag, Pahalgam and Mughal Road during the night, MeT officials said.


Srinagar, Dec 13 (PTI) Higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir received fresh snowfall on Thursday while the plains witnessed intermittent rains as the minimum temperature settled below the freezing point at most places in the Valley and Ladakh region.

Snowfall has been recorded in the higher areas of the valley like Qazigund, Kokernag, Pahalgam and Mughal Road during the night, MeT officials said.

There are reports of snowfall in other areas in the higher reaches of the valley and Jammu region as well including near the Jawahar Tunnel on Srinagar-Jammu national highway, they said.

However, the plains in the valley, including Srinagar, received intermittent rains overnight which continued Thursday morning in some areas, the officials said.

The snowfall and rains have led to closure of traffic on vital roads including the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway.

The nearly 300-km long highway was closed for traffic on Wednesday following accumulation of snow on both sides of the Jawahar Tunnel, an official of the Traffic Control Room said.

He said subject to fair weather and clearance of the road, the vehicles which were stranded Wednesday would be cleared first on Thursday.

Mughal Road, which is an alternate route connecting the valley with Jammu region, remained closed for traffic due to snowfall.

The Srinagar-Leh National Highway, connecting the valley with Ladakh region, is also closed for traffic due to snow accumulation at Zojilla.

Meanwhile, the valley and Ladakh region, except Srinagar, witnessed sub-zero night temperature last night.

Srinagar city recorded a low of 0.1 degrees Celsius last night, compared to the previous night's 0.2 degrees Celsius, the MeT officials said.

They said Qazigund -- the gateway town to the valley -- recorded a low of minus 0.2 degrees Celsius while the nearby Kokernag town recorded a low of minus 1.2 degrees Celsius.

Kupwara in north Kashmir saw the mercury settling at minus 2.8 degrees Celsius, the officials said.

They said Pahalgam health resort, which serves as one of the base camps for the annual Amarnath yatra in south Kashmir, registered a low of minus 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Gulmarg, the famous skiing resort in north Kashmir, saw the mercury dipping to a minimum of minus 9.5 degrees Celsius last night - which was colder than Leh and Kargil.

Gulmarg was the coldest recorded place in the state.

Leh town in Ladakh region recorded a minimum temperature of minus 8.9 degrees Celsius, while the mercury in the nearby Kargil town settled at a low of minus 9.3 degrees Celsius, the officials said.

The MeT Office has said the weather is likely to improve from Thursday and would stay mainly dry over the next few days.




Srinagar, Nov 27: Train service has again been suspended on Monday for security reasons in the Kashmir valley, where separatists had called for a general strike to express solidarity with the detenues, lodged in different jails within and outside the state.
'We have suspended all train runs in the Kashmir valley on the advice from police,' a senior railway official. This is for the 45th time rail service has been suspended in the Valley, fully or partially during 2017 so far. Therefore, he said, no train will chug on Srinagar-Badgam in central Kashmir to Baramulla in north. Similarly all trains will remain suspended on Srinagar-Anantnag-Qazigund in south Kashmir with Banihal in Jammu, he added. Admitting that Monday witness major rush of passengers, particularly in the morning, when people are returning to their place of work after Sunday, he said railway is acting as per advisory from the police. 'We cannot help as we have to act as per police directions since we cannot compromise with the security of the passengers and railway property,' he said.  Rail service has become very popular in the Valley as it is being considered cheap, fast and safe against all other mode of transport. Besides passengers, railway is also suffering a loss of Rs 3 lakh per day when the service is suspended. Both the factions of the Hurriyat Conference (HC) and seaparatist organisation, spearheading the agitation, demanding 'right to self-determination', have called for a general strike to express solidarity with the detenues lodged in different jails within and outside the state, alleging that they are being ill-treated in these jails. UNI

Srinagar, Nov 3: Train service has again been suspended on Friday for security reasons in south Kashmir, where a Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militant and two Army personnel were killed in a fierce encounter late last Thursday night.
However, trains continued to chug on Srinagar-Badgam in central Kashmir to Baramulla in north Kashmir as per schedule, a senior railway official told this morning.
He said all train runs between Srinagar-Anantnag-Qazigund in south Kashmir to Banihal in Jammu region have been suspended on Friday for security reasons.
He said an advisory was received from police to suspend train service in south Kashmir.
Hundreds of passengers, who had arrived at railway stations this morning in south Kashmir, were disappointed after they were informed that rail service on Srinagar and Banihal has been suspended. However, there was no strike call from any separatist organisation.
Last month the train service was suspended on several days for security reasons, particularly when there was strike call by separatists.
Rail service has become very popular in the Valley, which is being considered very cheap, safe and fast against other mode of transport service. UNI

ANANTNAG, SEPTEMBER 20: The Deputy Commissioner Anantnag, Mr. Mohammad Younis Malik today made a surprise visit  to Dooru and Qazigund areas of the district in order to assess the working of various government offices.
The DC visited the offices of Government Polytechnic College Larkipora, Block Development Office Larkipora, Municipality Dooru, Sub-District Hospital Dooru, Government Higher Secondary School Dooru, CDPO Dooru, SDM and Tehsil Office Dooru, Tehsil Office and Municipality Qazigund.
The attendance registers of these offices were checked. DC Anantnag on the occasion directed the officials to work tirelessly for the welfare of the public and said those employees found absent will be dealt strictly as per the rules.
The DC also interacted with the students and patients in higher secondary schools and SDH Dooru and assured that all the facilities will be provided in schools and hospitals.

Meanwhile, he directed all the officers to ensure the attendance of their subordinate employees so that hassle free public service delivery is ensured in a prompt and better way.
