Chandigarh, Aug 18: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal today urged External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to take up with the US government the issue of repeated hate crimes against Sikhs in that country.

He also appealed to Sikh institutions in the US to launch an awareness campaign about Sikh faith and beliefs to counter hate attacks.

In a statement here, the SAD president said the murder of Terlok Singh in New Jersey was the third hate crime against Sikhs in the United States in the last three weeks.

"This has set alarm bells ringing amongst Sikhs in the US and urgent steps need to be taken to address their deep sense of anguish. I urge Ms Swaraj to take up this issue at the highest level so that the life and property of Sikhs in the US is safeguarded," he added.

The SAD president said the murder of Terlok Singh followed the July 31 attack on Surjit Malhi in California and the attack on 71-year-old Sahib Singh, also in California on August 6.

He said these attacks proved that the US society was still not sufficiently aware about the Sikh faith and that steps needed be taken to address this.

He said while Swaraj could request Indian Consulates in the US to spread awareness on this front, he would also urge the SGPC and Sikhs institutions worldwide to launch an appropriate campaign.

He said the Sikh community in the US should also be associated with this campaign so that it could address their concerns as well as sensitize the US society about Sikh religion and culture.

He also conveyed his condolences to the family of Terlok Singh, who was stabbed to death in his store in New Jersey.

Chandigarh, Feb 5: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President Sukhbir Singh Badal on Monday demanded to register a case against the Gandhi family for engineering the massacre of thousands of Sikhs in Delhi and other parts of the country, following release of evidence to this effect in a sting operation, conducted on alleged 'genocide perpetrator' Jagdish Tytler.
Reacting to the release of video evidence in which Tytler openly brags that he was behind the murder of 100 Sikhs in Delhi in 1984, besides boasting that he had been promised a Rajya Sabha seat or Chief Ministership of Delhi by the Congress high command, the SAD President said both disclosures proved the Gandhi family's direct involvement in the 1984 genocide.
'The video evidence against Tytler, which surfaced today, was recorded in December, 2011. Tytler was sacked from the Union Ministry in 2009. The very fact that he is bragging that he was promised a seat in Parliament or Chief Ministership of Delhi proves that he was being offered inducements to stop him from spilling the beans against the Gandhi family.
'Now, it is incumbent that the courts of law ask the Gandhi family to explain why it was offering such inducements to a criminal, who had the blood of innocent Sikhs on his hands?'
Mr Badal said videographic evidence had also emerged, which explained why the victims of 1984 massacres were still not getting justice.
'Tytler is seen boasting about manipulating inquiries as well as flaunting his close relations with the judiciary and even admitting that his son's company had an account in a Swiss bank. He also flaunts his financial strength by stating that he had given up Rs 150 crore owed to him by his friends. All this was possible only because of the political shelter being given to him by the Gandhi family,' Mr Badal added.
Stating that time had now run out for Tytler finally, the SAD president said he should be arrested immediately and tried for the murder of 100 Sikhs in Delhi.
'There should not be any delay on this account as he had confessed to this crime. He even drove Rajiv Gandhi around Delhi in the aftermath of the massacre, according to his earlier self-admission. Simultaneously, the courts should probe the role of Gandhi family, which clearly conspired to strike out against the Sikhs.
'This is even corroborated from former PM Rajiv Gandhi's statement that when a big tree falls, the ground shakes,' he added. UNI

Chandigarh, Jul 18 : Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President Sukhbir Singh Badal today said the MPs and MLAs of his party would meet Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley soon and request for exemption to SGPC from paying GST on ‘langar’ purchases even as it asked the Punjab Government to fulfill its responsibility by getting the exemption done through the GST Council. In a statement here, the SAD president said, "We are duty- bound to convey the wishes of lakhs of devotees on this issue to the Centre." "However, what needs to be understood is that it is the Congress Government which has to get this exemption passed in the GST Council. Under the new GST regime, the sStates have a weightage of 66 per cent to influence all decisions in the GST Council vis-a-vis the Centre which has a weightage of only 33 per cent," he said. Mr Badal said though Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has written to the Union Finance Minister and sought exemption for the SGPC, it would be better if he directed his Finance Minister Manpreet Badal to get this done in the GST Council. "The Council allows each state to put forward its demands for grant of relief on specific items. However, relief can only be granted if the appropriate case is put up before the Council, which has not happened yet in the case of granting exemption for langar’ items," he added. Stating that the issue of extending exemption to the SGPC was being raised consistently by the SGPC since the last one fortnight, Mr Badal said Manpreet Badal should have filed a representation before the GST Council till now. Mr Badal said if Manpreet Badal was serious about siding with the Sikh community he should ask the GST Council to forfeit the state share in the GST immediately as a first step. UNI
