Chandigarh, Feb 16 :  The Shiromani Akali Dal Saturday asked Congress president Rahul Gandhi to expel Punjab minister Navjot Singh Sidhu from the party for calling for dialogue with Pakistan even after the Pulwama terrorist attack in which 40 CRPF jawans died.

Though Sidhu had condemned the "cowardly" attack by a Pakistan-based terror group, he had also called for dialogue to find a "permanent solution" to end the bloodshed.

Sidhu, who had attended the swearing-in ceremony of Imran Khan as Pakistan prime minister last year, had said, "For a handful of people, can you blame the entire nation and can you blame an individual?"

SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia said if the Congress president does not sack Sidhu, it would mean his statement was "made at the direction of Rahul Gandhi".

"I want to ask Rahul Gandhi if he will sit quietly... Every patriotic Indian is asking if Rahul will respect their wishes and rise above politics. Sidhu should be sacked promptly," he said.

The Akali leader said the credibility of Chief Minister Amarinder Singh was also on test.

"Punjabis are eager to know whether the words he (Singh) uttered in Vidhan Sabha yesterday about the stooges of Pakistan army chief are true. If so, the CM should not wait for Rahul Gandhi's assent to remove Sidhu from his cabinet," said Majithia.

"Navjot Sidhu apparently does not know even now that Pakistan is the fountainhead of terrorism. Even the US has condemned the Pulwama attack and said on record that it was conducted by Pakistan-based terrorist group Jaish-e-Mohammad," he said.

Groups like Jaish were also responsible for Pathankot, Deenanagar and Uri attacks, the Akali leader said.                                PTI

Former Army Chief Gen J J Singh Wednesday resigned from the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) citing personal reasons.

New Delhi, Dec 12 (PTI) Former Army Chief Gen J J Singh Wednesday resigned from the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) citing personal reasons.

Singh, who also served as the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, had joined the Akali Dal ahead of the Punjab assembly elections in early 2017 and had unsuccessfully contested against chief minister Amarinder Singh from the Patiala assembly constituency.

In his resignation letter to SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal, he said he was resigning from the party for personal reasons.

"I wish to inform you with a heavy heart that I have resigned from Shiromani Akali Dal and from the position of president of Shiromani Akali Dal, Ex-Servicemen wing with immediate effect due to personal reasons, he said in his letter.

Sources said Singh was not happy with the functioning of the Akali Dal and its leadership.

Asked about his future course, he said he wished to serve people and kept his political options open.

"I want to serve the people and the country, he told PTI.

Gen (retd) Singh was the first Sikh officer to become the army chief. He fought the 1965 and 1971 wars, apart from being among the architects of defeating Pakistani intruders in Kargil. He served as the 22nd Chief of the Indian Army from January 31, 2005, to September 30, 2007.

Chandigarh, Oct 12 (PTI) The SAD on Friday asked the Punjab government to immediately disburse Rs 3,000 per acre to farmers for managing paddy straw, while asserting that it would stand by the peasants and not allow the state to register cases against them.

The burning of paddy straw in open fields after harvesting is the main reason of air pollution in the state and in adjoining Delhi-NCR.

Former minister and senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia claimed it was shocking that instead of offering money to the farmers to manage paddy straw or engaging machines to deal with it free of cost, the Congress government had shifted this responsibility to peasants and was now intimidating them with threats of cases and jail terms.

Urging the farmers to unite for countering these "repressive tactics", Majithia said the SAD rank and file would stand with them and protest any move to penalize farmers.

Blaming the Congress government for "failing" to take steps to avoid burning of paddy stubble in the state, the SAD leader said the government had a full year to tackle the issue, but has aggravated it.

"The government first delayed paddy transplantation by 10 days through a dictatorial order which has reduced the window for sowing of wheat and gives very little time to farmers to manage paddy straw," he said.

"The government then placed orders for 14,000 machines like happy seeder and super straw management systems but only around 500 machines have been received at subsidised rates," he said.

Majithia asked the Congress government how it could "victimise" farmers when it had been given Rs 665 crore by the Centre to generate awareness on stubble burning and boosting use of subsidized machinery.

The only option left for the state was to compensate farmers for the cost incurred by them in managing paddy straw, he said.

Alleging that the Congress government only believed in "hype and had zero performance" to its credit, Majithia said the government had announced formation of a one million paddy straw challenge fund last year to come up with technology solutions to manage crop residue.

"Nothing has come out of it. Similarly the government has failed to encourage biomass plants or make arrangements for paddy straw to be used as fuel in kilns and other such measures," he said.

Chandigarh, July 5 : Senior Congress leader and Punjab Cooperation Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa today said had the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) acted responsibly on the drugs issue during its rule, the state would not have seen such "harrowing" days now.

The minister was responding to a reported demand by former chief minister Parkash Singh Badal about conducting dope test of MLAs and ministers after Chief Minister Amarinder Singh announced that as part of the anti-drug campaign, the employees would have to undergo dope test.

Hitting out at Badal, the cooperation minister reminded the Akalis that during their tenure, he, in December 2013, had demanded in the Assembly that all the MLAs must undergo dope test.

"But at that time, Badal kept mum so now he has no moral right to ask for dope test of MLAs," Randhawa was quoted as saying in a release.

Claiming that when the SAD was in power, he had challenged Badal on the floor of the House to take an oath on the drug issue at the Golden Temple, Randhawa alleged when in power, the Akali Dal speaks in a different tone but changes its stand when it goes out of power.

He accused the Akali Dal of being responsible for the "narco-terrorism" in Punjab, because it "protected drug lords" during its tenure.

Randhawa also demanded that Akali Dal patriarch should undergo dope test.PTI

Chandigarh, Jun 23 : Aam Aadmi Party MLA Amarjit Singh Sandoa today rejected the accusation of "extorting" money from those who had attacked him two days ago in Rupnagar district and said he was ready for a CBI probe into it.

Talking to reporters here today, Sandoa maintained that illegal mining was taking place at a village near Nurpur Bedi where he had gone to expose such activities.

Sandoa, who represents Rupnagar in the assembly, also accused the district administration of closing its eyes to "rampant" illegal mining.

"I was not given any money (as claimed by accused Ajwinder Singh). I challenge him to prove that I had taken money from him," Sandoa told reporters.

"If I had to collect money, then why would I take media along with me on that day? The matter can be inquired into by CBI and I am ready for it," said Sandoa.

The accused, Ajwinder Singh, and his family had reportedly alleged that the AAP MLA had been demanding money from them while accusing him of indulging in illegal mining. The family had also alleged that the MLA had already taken Rs five lakh from them.

The opposition Shiromani Akali Dal has demanded a judicial probe into the attack on the AAP legislator and alleged that attackers were AAP supporters who protested against alleged "extortions" by Sandoa.

Sandoa was injured after being allegedly attacked at village Beinhara near Nurpur Bedi in Rupnagar district when the legislator had gone to a quarry to verify the reports of illegal sand mining.

Ajwinder Singh and his accomplices allegedly attacked him. Sandoa was then admitted to PGIMER hospital in Chandigarh.

Sandoa said that he had nothing to do with the mafia, rather he was always against illegal mining mafia. "I will never allow illegal mining in my area," he said.

On the mining department not finding any illegal mining at Beinhara and Harsa Bela sand quarries, Sandoa said that the sand quarry was legal.

"But mining was taking place in water and the excavation was very deep. Mining was being done in an illegal manner," he claimed.

"The administration is not taking any action against illegal mining," he added.PTI

Chandigarh, Jun 18 : A Shiromani Akali Dal delegation led by party president Sukhbir Singh Badal will soon call on Home Minister Rajnath Singh and urge the Centre to release "secret documents" related to the Army operation on Golden Temple in June 1984, an SAD spokesman said today.
The delegation will urge the Centre to secure documents from the UK government about their role in the operation, SAD spokesman Harcharan Bains said.
He said the delegation will seek release of all Sikh prisoners after the completion of their sentence and urge the Centre to release the compensation to the Jodhpur detenus.
The decision to send the delegation was taken at a meeting of party high command in Chandigarh yesterday. The meeting was chaired by Sukhbir Badal and attended by party patron Parkash Singh Badal, he said.
Bains said the delegation would urge the Centre to implement the Swaminathan Commission report to ensure that farmers get at least 50 per cent over and above their production cost.
During the meeting, it was decided that the delegation will urge the Centre to bring petrol and diesel under GST regime.
The delegation will also urged the home minister to address the grievances of the Sikh community in Shillong, where the community members were recently targeted by locals.
"There is an acute sense of insecurity in the minds of the Sikhs living in Shillong. This is sending an adverse signal to minorities throughout the country," he said. (PTI)
Chandigarh, Jun 7 :  Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal today said his party remained a permanent ally of the BJP and urged other alliance partners also to stand together ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

"The SAD is a permanent ally of the BJP and the NDA," he told reporters after BJP president Amit Shah's meeting here with top Akali Dal leaders, including Akali patriarch Parkash Singh Badal.

There is no conflict between his party and the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Akali Dal chief said.

He said SAD members discussed strategy for the upcoming 2019 parliamentary polls with Shah at the meeting, which was part of the BJP's sampark for samarthan' (contact for support) exercise.

Shah also called on two sports legends - hockey's Balbir Singh Sr (94) and athlete Milkha Singh (85) - at their homes during his one-day Chandigarh visit.

Sukhbir Badal said his party wanted to appeal to all NDA allies to come together for the Lok Sabha polls.

"The battle is just over six months away. Whatever differences may be there, we should forget those and make one plan, he said.

SAD sources said the two parties decided to form a six-member committee in connection with the 2019 polls. The panel will also take the development work by the NDA government to the people, they said.

As part of the same outreach programme, Shah was in Mumbai yesterday to talk to the Shiv Sena, an increasingly reluctant partner in the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance.

The SAD and the BJP shared power in Punjab before the Congress won the February 2017 assembly elections.

On seat-sharing between the two parties next year, Badal said, "We will form an internal committee which will discuss that."

BJP leader Tarun Chugh said, "Both parties are old and permanent allies. Badal senior is our idol and under his leadership we are moving ahead in Punjab. The meeting was held in a very cordial atmosphere."

Chugh said members of both parties appreciated the development undertaken during the four years of the Narendra Modi government at the Centre.

Another senior BJP leader Avinash Rai Khanna said, The meeting ended with determination that we have to win the 2019 Lok Sabha polls."

Khanna said there are no differences between the two allies and both are working strongly together.

However, ahead of the meeting, senior SAD leader Balwinder Singh Bhunder said the Modi government had "ignored the issues of Punjab in the last four years.

Akali Dal sources said some SAD leaders also took up issues related to farmers and the Satluj-Yamuna Link canal at the meeting.

The BJP president tweeted after the meeting, "It is always a delight to meet Badal Sahab. Met Shri Parkash Singh Badal ji and Sukhbir at his home in Chandigarh."

Later, he held a meeting with the Punjab BJP unit to discuss election strategy for 2019.

Some people were detained by Chandigarh police when they tried to meet Shah to hand over a memorandum on Goods and Services Tax and the situation in Shillong, the scene of the recent violence between Khasi and Sikh communities.

Senior SAD leaders Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, Balwinder Singh Bhundar, Ranjit Singh Brahmpura (all MPs), Daljeet Singh Cheema, Bikram Singh Majithia were part of the meeting with Shah at the senior Badal's home.

Also present were BJP leaders Madan Mohan Mittal, Manoranjan Kalia, Ashwini Sharma and Rajinder Bhandari.

Shah also paid obeisance at a gurdwara. Chandigarh MP Kirron Kher, BJP leader Satya Pal Jain and Punjab BJP chief Shwait Malik were with him.

On his arrival at the airport, Shah was welcomed by BJP members, including Chandigarh BJP chief Sanjay Tandon and party leader Swaran Salaria.

Earlier, Aam Aadmi Party leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira referred to Operation Bluestar at Amritsar's Golden Temple in 1984, alleging that priceless historic documents and rare manuscripts were seized by the Army then.

He said at his meeting with Shah, Parkash Singh Badal should demand the release of those documents.

"Dont just beg for seat sharing do some good for the community," Khaira, who is also Leader of Opposition in the assembly, had tweeted.

The BJP launched the 'sampark for samarthan' exercise to mark the fourth anniversary of the Modi government.

The party said around 4,000 functionaries, including chief ministers and Union ministers, will contact one lakh people to inform them about the government's achievements.

In August last year, Shah was on a three-day visit to Haryana where he held a series of meetings and reviewed projects undertaken by the Manohar Lal Khattar government.

The BJP chief also visited Chandigarh in May last year. PTI

Chandigarh, Aug 18 : The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today asked Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh to take prompt action against Local Bodies Minister Navjot Sidhu for allegedly insulting the nation and the national flag by allowing several Congress leaders to take part in the ceremonial guard of honour inspection during the Independence Day celebrations in Ferozepur. In a statement here, SAD spokesperson Maheshinder Singh Grewal said this was a fit case for taking action against the Congress minister as he was yet to apologise and express remorse for breaching the sanctity of a solemn occasion. “Dealing with Sidhu with a heavy hand has also become a matter of urgency because an insidious attempt is being made to shift responsibility to a hapless police inspector”, he added. Stating that the serious insult to national pride occurred solely due to Navjot Sidhu, the Akali leader said the Minister took the four Congress leaders along with him to the parade ground after alighting from the stage. He said the Minister was insistent that the Congress leaders accompany him while inspecting the guard of honour and this was why the police officers, including the DSP and the SSP, did not stop them from hopping on to the inspection vehicle and crowding it. Mr Grewal said Sidhu’s collusion in this brazen and indefensible disrespect to the national flag was proved from the fact that he did not at any moment try to stop the Congress leaders from stepping onto the inspection vehicle. “Sidhu did not even reproach the Congress leaders for this serious breach of protocol and security even after the function and neither did he recommend police action against them. He has not expressed remorse for the incident even three days after it occurred. All this shows he was a willing accomplice and also the primary instigator due to whom the incident occurred in the first place. This warrants immediate action against him, including removal from the council of ministers,” he added. Asserting that the Congress government should not search for scapegoats to shift the blame from Sidhu, the Akali leader said the blame should be given where it was due. “In this case it is unreservedly Navjot Sidhu who is at fault. Any attempt to close this case by taking action against a few police officials would be an eye wash and a mockery of justice,” he added. Meanwhile, he also asked the Chief Minister to circulate rules of conduct on national functions to all ministers so that such despicable acts did not reoccur. He said earlier also Sidhu had breached protocol and marred the grace of the swearing in ceremony of new council of ministers by walking away from the stage without shaking hands with the Governor. “He had to be called back and reminded to do this”, the Akali leader said while urging the Chief Minister not to show any laxity in dealing with Sidhu this time. “Stern action should be taken against him to set an example for all elected representatives so that a clear message is sent across the board that governance is not a laughter challenge or comedy circus,” the Akali leader added. Amritsar, Aug 17 : Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh today lashed out at Akali leaders Sukhbir Singh Badal and Harsimrat Kaur Badal for misleading people of the state on crop loan waiver, GST on langar, and other issues, and challenged them to list out a single meaningful achievement of their party’s rule in the state. Lambasting the husband-wife duo for ruining the state with their ill-conceived policies and visionless programmes, the Chief Minister told mediapersons here, after inaugurating the Partition Museum, that the Akalis, in the 10 years of their rule, had brought the state to its knees. Sukhbir and his coterie had ruined the state and its assets, thus depriving Punjab of its pristine pride and glory. He hit out at Shiromani Akali Dal president Mr Badal for questioning the Congress Government's four-month rule, challenging him to explain what he they had done for Punjab in the past decade. He urged Mr Badal to introspect about what the Akali Government had given to Punjab, and added that his own Government had, in just four months, taken several historic welfare measures for the state and its people. To a question on GST exemption on Langar and Prasad, Capt Singh said he had taken up this issue with the Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and would pursue the same. The matter pertained to the Centre and the Union Food Processing Minister should get the langars exempted from GST instead of putting the onus on the State Government, he added. In response to a question on the Haq Committee report, the Chief Minister pointed out that his Government had already waived off debts of 10.25-lakh small and marginal farmers in the state. The Haq Committee was now working on some other key issues concerning the farming community and would soon submit its final report. He accused the Akalis and other political opponents of trying to mislead people on the issue in order to promote their vested interests. Earlier, the Chief Minister paid floral tributes to Shaheed Madan Lal Dhingra on his martyrdom day near Bharawan Da Dhaba. UNI

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President Sukhbir Singh Badal today said the MPs and MLAs of his party would meet Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley soon and request for exemption to SGPC from paying GST on ‘langar’ purchases even as it asked the Punjab Government to fulfill its responsibility by getting the exemption done through the GST Council. Chandigarh, Jul 18 : Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President Sukhbir Singh Badal today said the MPs and MLAs of his party would meet Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley soon and request for exemption to SGPC from paying GST on ‘langar’ purchases even as it asked the Punjab Government to fulfill its responsibility by getting the exemption done through the GST Council. In a statement here, the SAD president said, "We are duty- bound to convey the wishes of lakhs of devotees on this issue to the Centre." "However, what needs to be understood is that it is the Congress Government which has to get this exemption passed in the GST Council. Under the new GST regime, the sStates have a weightage of 66 per cent to influence all decisions in the GST Council vis-a-vis the Centre which has a weightage of only 33 per cent," he said. Mr Badal said though Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has written to the Union Finance Minister and sought exemption for the SGPC, it would be better if he directed his Finance Minister Manpreet Badal to get this done in the GST Council. "The Council allows each state to put forward its demands for grant of relief on specific items. However, relief can only be granted if the appropriate case is put up before the Council, which has not happened yet in the case of granting exemption for langar’ items," he added. Stating that the issue of extending exemption to the SGPC was being raised consistently by the SGPC since the last one fortnight, Mr Badal said Manpreet Badal should have filed a representation before the GST Council till now. Mr Badal said if Manpreet Badal was serious about siding with the Sikh community he should ask the GST Council to forfeit the state share in the GST immediately as a first step. UNI
