Kolkata, May 9: A typical Bengali can hardly be kept apart from a daily helping of fish.
The great poet and writer, and Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore was no different either. He was a well-known lover of fish, indeed of all good food.
Hence, on the occasion of his birth anniversary, better known as ‘Pochishe Baisakh’ (25th of Baisakh, his birthday according to the Bengali calendar), the State Fisheries Development Corporation (SFDC) is organising a fish festival at its restaurant in Nalban in Kolkata.
It started on May 8 and will continue till May 13. This year, Pochishe Baisakh falls on May 9. SFDC is a body under the aegis of the Bengal Government’s Fisheries Department.
The connection between Tagore and fish has been furthered by one of the sources for the dishes – Amish-o-Niramish Randhan, a culinary classic in Bengali by Prajnasundari Devi, a niece of Rabindranath Tagore, an expert chef herself, and whose cooked items were among Rabindranath’s favourites, as well as of many members of Thakurbari (the residents of Jorasankho Thakurbari).
The other book from which dishes have been selected is Rannai Boi, another classic, by Leela Majumdar (better known as a children’s author) and Kamala Chattopadhyay.
History says that Thakurbari was a melting pot of cuisines from around the world, be they non-vegetarian or vegetarian.
Going with that, the fish dishes selected for the festival also boast of a wide range of influences.
Among them are ilisher dolon, bagda chingri bhate, bhetkir gravy cutlet, chingri puff, macher pie, grilled shole and several others.
So what are you waiting for? Head to Nalban before it’s too late and indulge your taste buds in some of the tastiest dishes in Bengali cuisine. UNI

Kolkata, Apr 10: The State Fisheries Department has decided to set up a daily market (or ‘haat’) on the field beside the lake in Nalban.
This venue will be used for selling fish, meat, poultry, vegetables as well as handicrafts, to be sold by the manufacturers themselves.
The handicrafts stalls will be run by women belonging to self-help groups (SHGs).
These SHGs get financial aid under the State Government’s Anandadhara Scheme, which entails making and selling handicrafts and other items.
This city haat, or market, is expected to become famous the same way the Sonajhuri Haat in Santiniketan, Mangala Haat in Howrah and the Hari Sahar Haat in Shyambazar, Kolkata, have become.
The spot is ideal for a haat as it is quite near the IT hub of Sector V, where thousands come every day to work.
Already a few snacks outlets and restaurants have opened up at Nalban, including by the State Fisheries Development Corporation (SFDC). UNI

Kolkata, Mar 20: In a novel move, the West Bengal Government has decided to make food made by inmates of correctional homes in the State available at the State secretariat, Nabanna, and at entertainment hotspots like Eco Park and Nalban.
This project will be jointly run by the Departments of correctional administration and fisheries.
The latter would supply the raw materials and provide the culinary training.
The Fisheries Department will train a few selected inmates in the cultivation of fish at various water bodies, both inside as well as outside the correction homes.
The food will be made available through the outlets of the State Fish Development Corporation (SFDC) as well as sold via food vans.
The menu will include delicious items like pabdar jhal, dab chingri, tel koi, bhetki paturi, fish fry, fish finger, fish pakoda, fish batter fry, fish biryani, among other items.
The venture will initially be initiated through a pilot project involving the inmates of Dum Dum Central Correctional Home and then replicated at other homes. UNI

Kolkata, Feb 26: The West Bengal Fisheries Department has decided to serve a new type of fish on the plates of Bengalis this winter – grouper.
The hatchlings are being procured from Visakhapatnam.
They would be reared at the government hatchery in Fraserganj.
The reason for focusing on grouper is that it tastes just like an eternal favourite of Bengalis – bhetki.
The government’s aim is to satisfy part of the high demand for bhetki with grouper.
This would prevent unscrupulous traders from hiking up the price of bhetki to unreasonable levels – something they are wont to during winter, when the demand is high.
To initiate the project, a few lakh hatchlings would be bought by the Bengal Government this March.
The Trinamool Congress Government has been putting a lot of stress in the farming of fish as well as on its exporting.
Then, a lot of restaurants and ready-to-eat outlets are opening up in Kolkata and its outskirts as well as across the state, many by the State Government too, creating a huge demand for bhetki, among other types of fishes. Hence, the potential for grouper is quite high.
The whole project is being overseen by the State Fisheries Development Corporation (SFDC). According to officials of SFDC, the taste of both fishes is similar and hence the grouper’s price too would be at the same level as that of bhetki’s.
SFDC officials expect grouper to capture the hearts and minds of Bengalis soon. UNI

Kolkata, Dec 8: At the 'Ahare Bangla' food festival being held at New Town Mela Ground, a new item is being served by the State Fisheries Development Corporation (SFDC): sea crabs.
Various dishes based on sea crabs are being sold this year.
For many years now, fishermen in Digha have been catching these sea crabs. SFDC has known the demand for these crabs for some time now – not just in the state and in other parts of the country like in New Delhi and Mumbai (including in five-star hotels), but also in other countries, from enquiries from Japan and United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Now it is firming up plans to buy these crabs from fishermen in a systematic way and supply them to various places. For export, the countries being planned to be sent to are Japan, South Korea, China, Australia and the Gulf countries, and to Europe.
The food festival, whose third edition is being held this year, is open to everyone from December 8 to 11. Lunch items would be available from 12 PM to 3 PM, snacks from 3 PM to 6 PM and dinner items from 6 PM to 9 PM. UNI

Kolkata, Nov 11: The Fisheries Department of the West Bengal Government is going to start, for the first time, ‘cage culture’ of fish on a commercial scale.
The fishes would be cultivated in brackish water bodies across the state. Earlier, similar fish culture has been done by various government and private organisations, but on much smaller scales. This kind of fish culture would be conducted in the brackish water bodies owned by the State Fisheries Development Corporation (SFDC) as well as by fishery cooperatives and people engaged in the fishery business. As of now, it has been decided to employ 80 cages, 18 of which would be used by SFDC and the rest distributed among the bodies mentioned earlier, in the districts of Purba Medinipur and North and South 24 Parganas. If this venture turns out to be successful commercially, the government has plans to do start similar activities in freshwater bodies as well as in marine zones. UNI
