Srinagar, Mar 5: All educational institutions remained closed on Monday in the Kashmir valley, where separatists have called for a general strike in protest against the killing of a Lashkher-e-Toiba (LeT) militant and four others in an encounter at Shopian on Sunday evening.
The Kashmir University (KU), Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) have also postponed all examinations scheduled to be held today.
It was a very disappointed day for the students upto middle class who were to attend their school for the first time after winter vacations. However, the high and higher secondary schools reopened last week after winter vacation in the valley.
As the authorities have imposed restriction under Section 144 CrPC in the down town, Shehar-e-Khas (SeK) and parts of Kralkhud and Maisuma in Srinagar following strike called by separatists, the educational institutions were closed in the valley. However, many parents accompanying their children were disappointed after they were informed that schools will remain closed today also for security reasons.
We were preparing for first day of schooling of our children for the past one week after winter vacation, said a parent at Natipora adding students were also disappointed after informed about the new development.
All middle schools were closed in the first week of January for winter vacation. High and Higher Secondary institutions were closed in the second week of January.
The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), comprising Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq and Mohammad Yaseen Malik have called for a general strike today against the Shopian incident where a Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) militant and four others were killed in an encounter with Army at Pahnoo, Shopian, Sunday night.
The KU and IUST have also postponed all examinations today. They said the next date of hearing will be announced separately later. There were also protests in the KU last night after hearing about the Shopian incident. UNI

Srinagar, Sep 4 : Class work in all educational institutes, including schools and colleges, were suspended as a precautionary measure today in north Kashmir, where two Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) militants were killed in an encounter with security forces this morning.
      “All the colleges and schools in twin districts of Kupwara and Baramulla in north Kashmir shall remain closed today as a precautionary measure,” officials told .
      According to District Magistrate class work shall remain suspended in Government Degree College Bandipora, Government Higher Secondary School (HSS) Hajin, Sumbal, Naidkhai, HSS Bagh Bandipora and HSS Sumbal today as a precautionary measure.
      Two LeT militants were killed in a fierce encounter with security forces in apple township of Sopore in north Kashmir district of Baramulla this morning.
       However, educational institutions were closed in the frontier district of Kupwara, where people are protesting protesting against alleged forced disappearance of a youth and thrashing of another by the Army. Fearing trouble today, the authorities ordered closure of schools and colleges.
      Locals alleged that two youth, identified as Nassarullah and Manzoor, residents of Devar Lolab had entered a local Army camp on September 7 following directions by the security forces. They said both the youth had entered their names on the log book before going inside the camp.
      They further alleged that both the youth were tortured in the camp.  
      “Nassarullah was released in an injured condition, who was later rushed to local hospital and later referred to Srinagar,” they said.
  The whereabouts of Manzoor were not known, the locals said and expressing apprehension that he might have been killed in custody. The demonstrators said recently a youth was killed in Handwara, who was later labeled as foreign militant by the Army.
      Meanwhile, Army on September 2 ordered an inquiry into the allegations. Similarly, the District Magistrate has also ordered an inquiry into the allegations by the locals.
      In the past also, authorities have closed educational institutes, including schools and colleges, on several occasions since April this year, when students clashes with security forces across the valley following thrashing of students, including girls, in Pulwama Degree college.
      Last year during the summer unrest, educational institutions remained closed for about six months.UNI
