New Delhi, Oct 13 (PTI) Several resident welfare associations and civil society groups in Delhi have urged Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to reduce VAT on petrol and diesel in the city, claiming the residents were suffering due to price hike.

The central government had slashed the rate of petrol and diesel by Rs 2.50 per litre on October 4, V K Arora, the convenor of Delhi Residents Forum said.

This was followed by reduction of Value Added Tax (VAT) by various states including neighbouring Haryana and Uttar Pradesh bringing relief to their residents.

"We urge the Delhi government to reduce VAT on petrol and diesel in the national capital and bring the fuel prices down," Arora said.

With the festival season on, secretary of Mahila Pragatisheel Association (MPA) Ritu Bhatia said the residents are being forced to use private vehicles in the capital due to lack of affordable and efficient public transport.

"Due to price difference of about Rs two to three in fuel prices with Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, Delhiites living near borders are being forced to buy fuel from neighbouring states which is Bharat Standard (BS) IV as compared to less polluting BS VI in Delhi," Manish Chawla, a resident of Anand Vihar said.

"As winters are approaching, use of BS IV in capital is also leading to more pollution in the city coupled with burning of crops in neighbouring states," said VN Bali, the president of RWA Federation, East Delhi said.

Amaravati, Sept 10 : After poll-bound Rajasthan, the Andhra Pradesh government Monday announced a Rs 2 cut in VAT on petrol and diesel to check the mounting prices of these fuels.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu announced the reduction in Value Added Tax in the state assembly. He said the state government was currently levying Rs 4 per litre VAT on petrol and diesel.

"The central government has been imposing a heavy burden on people by steeply increasing the prices of petrol and diesel despite heavy income in the form of various levies and dividends.

"Though the state is faced with a deficit budget, we have decided to reduce the tax and ease the burden on people," he said.

The state would have to forego a revenue of Rs 1,120 crore due to the measure, he said.

A day before the opposition-sponsored Bharat Bandh against rising fuel prices, poll-bound Rajasthan had on Sunday slashed the VAT on petrol and diesel.

Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje announced a 4 per cent reduction which brought the prices of the two commodities down by Rs 2.5 per litre.PTI

Kolkata, Nov 7: West Bengal Finance Minister Amit Mitra has written a strong letter to the Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley regarding the sufferings of small industries including handloom workers due to the hurried implementation of GST.
He mentioned that in Surat alone, 90000 out of the 7 lakh handlooms had to be sold at throwaway prices, as there is little business to be done now. The Bengal Finance Minister has pointed out that after the GST came into effect, the prices of most of commodities have risen and the public, in general, are angry. Even bigger traders are unsatisfied due to complexity in return filing under GST. As a result, the filing of returns, which was 80% in July, has dropped to 60% in August, he pointed out. It may be mentioned that due to the high rates of taxes, business transactions are being made out of the books. That has resulted in the loss of revenue. While in the first month, the revenue earned was Rs 95 crore, it has dropped to Rs 93 crore. The biggest proof of this being that in the time of festivities during the month of September, there has been no increase in revenue. Bengal Finance Minister had time and again cautioned against the hurried implementation of GST during the meetings of the GST Council earlier this year. The Bengal Finance Minister said the way the regulations are being changed frequently, it has been very difficult to format the same online and things have come down to pen and paper. As a result, the system has been pushed back to the pre-VAT era, he wrote in the letter. Mitra also pointed out that post GST many household consumer items have fallen under the 28% bracket of the GST. He argued that apart from cigarettes and other tobacco items, the 28% bracket should be changed to 18. He also pointed out that the consumer items now falling under the 18 per cent tax bracket, should be brought under the 12 per cent bracket. UNI

New Delhi, Aug 18 :  Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today wrote to Chief Ministers of states for reduction of Value Added Tax burden on petroleum products. Mr Jaitley urged the Chief Ministers to reduce the burden of VAT on petroleum products, used as inputs in making of goods after the introduction of the Goods and Services Tax. The Finance Minister highlighted the concern being raised by the manufacturing sector in the country regarding the rise in input costs of petroleum products happening on account of transition to Goods and Services Tax regime. In the pre-GST regime, because the petroleum products as well as the final goods produced both attracted VAT, input tax credit of petroleum products being used as inputs by manufacturers was allowed to varying extent by different states. However, in the post-GST scenario, the manufactured goods attracted GST, while the inputs of petroleum products used in the manufacturing attracted VAT and, therefore, it would lead to cascading effect of taxes, the Finance Ministry said in a statement. In view of this, in the pre-GST regime, certain states had lower rate of five per cent VAT on Compressed Natural Gas used for manufacturing of goods. Some states also had lower rate of VAT on diesel being used for manufacturing sector. Mr Jaitley also requested the states to explore the possibility of having a lower rate of VAT on petroleum products used for manufacturing of those items, on which there is GST, so that there is minimum disruption in the costing of goods.
