Manila, Nov 14: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday attended the on-going 12th East Asia Summit being held on the sidelines of the three-day long ASEAN Summit here.
Mr Modi joined the rest of the nation heads and key regional leaders for the group photograph.
Prime Minister was seen interacting merrily with the Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte. Mr Modi also spoke to his counterpart from New Zealand Jacinda Ardern for a while. "ASEAN is central to India’s Act East Policy therefore our Prime Minister’s participation in the ASEAN India Summit and the East Asia Summit, provides a very important opportunity to reiterate our commitment to the partnership, especially as we celebrate this landmark year," Secretary East Preeti Saran has told the reporters on the eve of Mr Modi's visit to Manila here. East Asia Summit comprises of 10 of the ASEAN countries plus eight other countries -- India, China, USA, Russia, New Zealand, Australia, Japan and South Korea. "India is a founding member of the East Asia Summit. We attach the highest importance to this forum," Ms Preeti Saran, Secretary (East) had said on November 10. Since the inception of the East Asia Summit, "being founding members", India has consistently attended the East Asia Summit since 2005. "The East Asia Summit as a forum provides an important opportunity for the leaders of the region to exchange views and assess international issues of concern including traditional and non-traditional security threats, primarily terrorism, maritime cooperation, maritime security and non-proliferation etc," she has said. The significance of East Asia Summit can be also underlined in India's focused approach of 'Act East' policy. Notably, the East Asia Summit meet comes two days after India, the United States, Australia and Japan on Sunday held the first formal deliberations giving a booster to the new block created essentially to counter China's growing influence - at the regional level and also globally.
