Manila, Sep 15: Two women were killed Saturday in a landslide set off by Super Typhoon Mangkhut, Philippine police said, the first reported deaths in the massive storm.

Officers in the city of Baguio recovered the women's bodies from the soil and rubble after a hillside collapsed from the typhoon's heavy rains, said police Superintendent Pilita Tacio. (AFP)

MANILA, May 11: Public satisfaction with the performance of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte's government fell in the first quarter from a record high in December, partly pulled down by a poor score on fighting inflation, a private pollster said on Friday.
Duterte's administration received an overall "very good" net satisfaction rating of +58 percent, down from December's "excellent" level of +70, according to the March 23-27 poll by Social Weather Stations (SWS).
The December rating was the highest on record since SWS began conducting opinion surveys in the 1980s.
The latest poll showed 69 percent of adult Filipinos were satisfied with the government's overall performance, down from 79 percent in December.
Eleven percent said they were dissatisfied, compared to a previous nine percent.
The administration scored the lowest when it came to fighting inflation, which reached its highest level in at least five years in April.
The country's central bank raised its benchmark interest rate on Thursday for the first time in more than three years in a move to contain inflationary pressure.
Duterte's government won it's highest marks for helping victims of disasters. While there was no major natural disaster in the first quarter, a few typhoons caused flooding in some areas and the eruption of the country's most active volcano in January displaced thousands of Filipinos.
The first quarter poll mirrored a similar decline in the firebrand leader's trust rating, which fell to "very good" in March from "excellent" in December. REUTERS

MANILA, May 10: The Philippine economy grew 6.8 percent in the first quarter from a year earlier, matching expectations, driven by industry and services, the statistics agency said on Thursday.
Economists polled by Reuters had predicted that gross domestic product would grow 6.8 percent in the January-March period, after 6.5 percent expansion the previous quarter.
Details on quarterly growth are due to be released later.
Economists had estimated the economy would grow 1.5 percent in the first quarter from the previous three months, matching the pace of the fourth quarter. REUTERS

Manila, Mar 24: A new estimate by World Health Organization (WHO) for Western Pacific Region show a 14 per cent reduction in the incidence of tuberculosis (TB).
However with 1.8 million people infected annually in the region, much more needs to be done.
On the World Tuberculosis Day on Saturday, WHO has appealed governments of all nations to provide citizens access to TB testing and treatment as part of universal health coverage.
“The TB rate is coming down in the Region, but it’s not happening fast enough. We need to do much more to achieve our goal of ending the epidemic once and for all,” says Dr Shin Young-soo, WHO Regional Director for the Western Pacific.
The region has seen progress, with TB treatment coverage increasing to 76 per cent in 2016 from 69 per cent in 2007. The TB mortality rate in the Region (5 per 100 000 population in 2016) remains much lower than the global average (17 per 100 000). More than 90 per cent of new cases in the Region have been treated successfully,but drug-resistant forms of the disease remain a concern, WHO said in statement.
According to WHO estimates, one in four people with TB are not getting treatment through public health programmes. Action is needed to understand whether they are getting effective treatment in the private system or not at all.
TB is one of the top 10 causes of death in the world. When someone with lung TB coughs, sneezes, or spits, they can spread the infection.TB germs can remain in the air for up to six hours, making people in overcrowded areas especially susceptible.
Symptoms include persistent cough, bloody sputum, fever, chills and weight loss. The disease can be especially devastating for people with other health issues, such as HIV and diabetes, that weaken their immune system.
The risk of TB also increases for people who are undernourished, smoke tobacco, drink alcohol or are exposed to air pollution. A person with untreated TB can infect up to 15 others a year.
“While TB is highly contagious, it is also entirely preventable and curable,” says Dr Shin.
More than 95 per cent of TB cases and deaths in the world are in developing countries, with 45 per cent of new cases in Asia, according to 2016 figures. UNI

Manila, Mar 21: In central Philippines, nineteen people were killed and 21 others injured on Wednesday when a passenger bus lost control and plunged off a cliff, Channel News Asia reported.
The police said the bus was coming to Manila. It skidded off a mountain road on Mindoro island late Tuesday. 
The accident occurred near Sablayan town, which is about 195 kilometres south of Manila.
Rescue workers were pulling the dead and injured from the vehicle, which landed at the bottom of a wooded ravine, the police added. UNI

Manila, Dec 23: A tropical storm in the Philippines that triggered mudslides and flooding has killed more than 90 people, the officials have said.
According to a report of the Sky News, the casualties, most of them inflicted late on Friday, were all on the main southern island of Mindanao.
"We're are still trying to confirm reports of a farming village buried by a mudslide due to heavy rains brought by the typhoon," said local official Ryan Cabus. 
Power and communication lines have been cut, complicating rescue efforts.
Forecasters said the storm had gathered strength over the Sulu Sea and was packing winds of up 50mph.
It was heading west and would be out over the sea by midday on Saturday, they added.
Emergency workers, soldiers, police and volunteers were being mobilised to search for survivors, clear debris, and restore power and communications. UNI

Manila, Dec 21: A Ferry carrying 251 people on Thursday capsized in stormy seas off between Dinahican, Quezon and Polilio Island.
The accident occurred off the town of Real about 70 kilometers East of Manila as the boat headed from the port towards the remote island of Polillo in rough weather, the media reports said.
Many of the rescue boats and helicopters sent to the area have been hampered by bad weather, although some local boats are said to have already rescued some passengers on board as per the official spokesman from the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG).
A local emergency services official, Juanito Diaz, said initial reports suggested the ferry, which has not been named, "sustained a big hole that caused it to capsize".
"The rescuers are still scouring the water in search of other possible passengers," he said, the Philippines Inquirer reports.
The Tropical Storm Tembin was forecast to hit land early on Friday and people travelling home for Christmas were warned to take caution,the vessel was allowed to sail as there were no storm warnings near Polillo.
Such accidents are relatively common in the Philippines, which frequently experiences storms.
PCG is coordinating with the Armed Forces of the Philippines for the deployment of its air and maritime assets to join the search and rescue. UNI

Manila, Nov 15: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has suggested for deepening of bilateral relations with New Zealand especially in the field of renewable energy and related fields even as Mr Modi and his counterpart Jacinda Ardern invited each other to visit respective countries.
"Prime Minister (Modi) suggested deepening cooperation in the renewable energy sector and related fields and both the Prime Ministers, as in our Prime Minister and the Prime Minister of New Zealand invited each other to visit their respective countries (during their one-on-one meeting here on Tuesday)," a senior official in the Indian External Affairs Ministry said here. Secretary East, in the External Affairs Ministry, Preeti Saran told reporters here on Tuesday that the deliberations between the two leaders were for the first time. "This is the first opportunity for our Prime Minister to meet with the new Prime Minister of New Zealand so our Prime Minister very warmly congratulated her for her election," she said. Ms Saran further said Mr Modi also mentioned the importance of the Indian diaspora’s presence in New Zealand and the importance of greater collaboration especially the need for New Zealand becoming an "important destination" for Bollywood - film shooting. "Already Indian cinema has been an important source of encouraging tourism from India to New Zealand and that was reiterated," Ms Saran said, adding that Mr Modi recalled that India's second highest civilian award Padma Vibhushan was given to Edmund Hillary -- the famous mountainer. Hillary has been a "household name in India", she said. "These are people to people contacts. Of course the Indian students community issue was taken up in the sense that yes more self-financed because New Zealand is a democracy. Manila, Nov 14: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday attended the on-going 12th East Asia Summit being held on the sidelines of the three-day long ASEAN Summit here.
Mr Modi joined the rest of the nation heads and key regional leaders for the group photograph. 
Prime Minister was seen interacting merrily with the Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte. Mr Modi also spoke to his counterpart from New Zealand Jacinda Ardern for a while. "ASEAN is central to India’s Act East Policy therefore our Prime Minister’s participation in the ASEAN India Summit and the East Asia Summit, provides a very important opportunity to reiterate our commitment to the partnership, especially as we celebrate this landmark year," Secretary East Preeti Saran has told the reporters on the eve of Mr Modi's visit to Manila here. East Asia Summit comprises of 10 of the ASEAN countries plus eight other countries -- India, China, USA, Russia, New Zealand, Australia, Japan and South Korea. Manila, Nov 14: Lending his contribution more as a mark of solidarity with the Filipino soldiers who fought the IS terrorists in Marawi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday handed over prosthetic limbs to at least 14 soldiers. 
The event took place at a simple but solemn function at the Museum of History of Ideas at the Philippine General Hospital compound. The Prime Minister was there for a brief event with the Mahaveer Philippines Foundation Inc on Monday. "Fourteen soldiers who fought during the recent war in Marawi, together with more than a hundred Filipino amputees received prosthetic limbs from India yesterday (that is Monday) in an event led by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Damodardas Modi in Manila," said a report in The Manila Bulletin. Mahaveer Philippines Foundation Inc President Enrique Lim said, "Chief of Staff has sent 14 amputees from the Marawi at this particular time. But from time to time we include soldiers". He added, "They are the ones who fought for the country. We owe them for sacrificing their lives for the comfort of your home and they fought for our country". The Philippines government on October 23 declared an "end to fierce urban warfare" in Marawi after troops killed the last pro-Islamic State (IS) terrorists who seized the city for five months to establish an enclave of the Middle East-based jihadi group in Southeast Asia. “We now announce the termination of all combat operations in Marawi,” Defence Secretary Delfin Lorenzana has said. He said government troops prevailed in the battle for control of a building where the Maute and Abu Sayyaf terrorists made their last stand. Troops also recovered 42 bodies of the last group of terrorists.  Mahavir Philippines Foundation, an associate centre of Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti, is based in Jaipur, which is famous for "Jaipur Foot.”  "PM @narendramodi interacts with 9-year-old Carlo Migel Silvano from Bulacan province at Mahaveer Philippine Foundation in Manila. Manila, Nov 14: On the last day of his three-day visit to the Philippines for the crucial ASEAN and East Asia Summits, PM Modi today held one-on-one dialogues with his counterparts from Japan and Australia -- Shinzo Abe and Malcom Turnbull  giving a "new vigour" to the bilateral ties.
"Delighted to have met you, Prime Minister @TurnbullMalcolm. Our talks today add new vigour to the friendship between India and Australia," the Prime Minister tweeted in response to a missive from the Australian leader. For his part, Mr Turnbull earlier tweeted saying, "Productive meeting this morning in Manila with Prime Minister @narendramodi focused on increased economic cooperation, security, and counter-terrorism. #ASEANSummit".  Continuing with his high-level bilateral engagements here on the the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit and other related conclaves, the Prime Minister on Tuesday met his Japanese counterpart and a "valued friend". Besides, Mr Modi interacted with the New Zealand Prime Minister. "Wonderful meeting with PM @jacindaardern. We discussed deepening economic and cultural cooperation between India and New Zealand," he wrote in a twitter post. Mr Modi also met Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei Darussalam. He also met leaders from Vietnam. "Meeting a valued friend and a trusted partner. Manila, Nov 13: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said India had no intention of
grabbing or snatching any other’s land as all its energy was directed at achieving a level playing field with the world. 
Speaking at a reception hosted by the Indian Ambassador in Manila, the Prime Minister said once Indians achieved a level playing field, nobody could stop it from surging ahead of all. Difficulties are encountered only in initial stages, and once that stage is crossed then there is no looking back, he said. 'People are talking of 21st century belonging to Asia, but I say 21st century could be of India, and three years of my being in power give me confidence to say that this is quite possible,' he said. The Prime Minister, who arrived here yesterday for the 31st ASEAN Summit, said this was his first visit to the Philippines, and he considered this region very important as is proved by his government’s emphasis on the ‘Act East’ policy from the very beginning. He said India had great great affinity and emotional binding with this region due to the reasons of heritage and history. 'Everybody here seems to be familiar with Ram and Buddha. It’s a great heritage, in conserving which the Indian community can do a great job,' he said. He said he was very happy that today Indians all over the world were being proud of being Indians.  Mr Modi said his government has been trying to channelize the energies of 1.25 bn people and all the countries natural resources to take India to new heights. Manila, Nov 13: Under consistent attack back home and especially in the political backyards of his home state Gujarat for demonetisation and roll back of 'half-baked' Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday made use of the ASEAN Business Summit forum here to defend his government's economic policies and asserted that India has emerged as a "globally integrated economy" and also a front runner in attracting FDI.
"This year in July we have implemented the highly complex task of migration to the uniform GST.....This has done away a vast range of state level and central level taxes throughout India," Mr Modi told the ASEAN Business Investment Summit here. He also said the anti-corruption drive is already showing results and the use of technology and digital transactions have only helped the cause further. "Most of the sectors in our economy are now open for FDI. More than 90 per cent of the Foreign Direct Investment are on auto approval route," he said adding India has emerged as a "front runner in attracting FDI". Amid frequent applause by the gathering, Mr Modi said compared to last three years, India has this year received "67 per cent more FDI".
"Now we are a globally integrated economy....these milestones have been achieved even before some of the major economic reforms," Prime Minister said. He said doing away with various complex structures of taxes in the country is no mean achievement "given the vastness and diversity and the federal nature of our country". Prime Minister, however, in his characteristic style said, "this is not enough". "Friends, a very large part of India's population had no access to banking services....This deprived them of the opportunities in getting access to institutional credit". In this context, he referred to the much talked about Jan Dhan Yojana and said, "within months, the lives of millions of Indians were transformed". UNI

Manila, Nov 13: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday visited the Manila-based Mahavir Philippines Foundation, an associate centre of Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti based in Jaipur, which is famous for "Jaipur Foot.” 
The philanthropic organisation, which has been set up by eminent Filipinos and Indian expat community, has distributed free "Jaipur Foot” to needy amputees. "PM @narendramodi interacts with nine-year old Carlo Migel Silvano from Bulacan province at Mahaveer Philippine Foundation in Manila. He is one of the thousands in Philippines fitted with the Indian-made 'Jaipur Foot' at this Foundation," MEA spokesman Raveesh Kumar tweeted along with a photograph of Mr Modi with the nine-year-old Carlo. "Our Prime Minister will visit this to demonstrate our India’s support to this very important charitable activity. Since its establishment this particular foundation has fitted nearly 15,000 amputees in the Philippines with the Jaipur Foot making them capable of living a new life," Secretary East in MEA, Preeti Saran has said in Delhi last week. It is not the first time that 'Jaipur foot' and the makers would come into focus. In 2014, the Prime Minister had lauded the efforts of the Jaipur-based organisation, for holding a special camp at Srinagar in Kashmir Valley to provide artificial limbs and other aids to 1,300 people, who have lost their limbs. Manila, Nov 13: The Southeast Asian leaders during their summit meeting here on Monday could skip major deliberations of South China Sea dispute, but are expected to raise the Rohingya refugee crisis that hit its member nation Myanmar in a big way.
"It will be taken up by our leaders, but it is always good start when the state which is dealing with the internal problem brings it up and opens up the topic," Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano told reporters here on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit and other related high-profile meetings. Malaysian Foreign Minister Anifah Aman said that even Prime Minister Najib Razak was very concerned about what was happening in Myanmar’s Rakhine state. 'And in all probability it will be one of the agendas, but it also depends on the circumstances. Maybe there is a closed door meeting, that could be more effective," he told the Malaysian media covering the summits. For her part, Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi on Sunday steered clear of the Rohingya crisis and in her address at the Business Investment Summit instead said that countries must continue to pursue reforms that will empower women.
Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi said, 'The empowerment of women toward economic and social development can be significant not only in my country but throughout our region'. More than 600,000 Rohingya Muslims have been displaced from their homes and have fled to neighbouring Bangladesh since August 25, when an army crackdown against the Rohingya intensified. Leaders from the 10 Asean member countries and its dialogue partners, namely Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, Russia, United States, Canada, the European Union are here in Manila for the important summits. The Centre for Human Rights Research and Advocacy (CENTHRA) urged ASEAN to appoint a special envoy to the Rakhine state for resolving the Rohingya crisis. Its chief executive Azril Mohd Amin said the appointment of a special envoy would be the best immediate plan for the regional bloc in dealing with crisis of the ethnic minority. ASEAN, he said, must use all possible diplomatic channels in stopping the systematic persecution of the Rohingya Muslims. The Philippines Foreign Secretary, however, said while discussing and debating the Rohingya crisis, the ASEAN leaders would keep balance between the "relevance" of the bloc and also the cherished principle of non-interference in domestic affairs. The regional bloc would probably not discuss much about South China Sea dispute as the Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte on Sunday suggested that, "The South China Sea is better left untouched. Nobody can afford to go to war". Mr Duterte told the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Business Investment Summit that Chinese authorities have agreed with his stance to pursue diplomatic channels and cooperation to deal with the maritime row. The investment meet will continue on Monday as well, and among others Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also address it. According to experts, a major challenge for the regional bloc will be to set aside purely national concerns and to be able to unify for a wider front in confronting the terror threat. National Defense College professor Chester Cabalza said here that addressing terrorism within the region will have to contend with the ASEAN principle of non-interference as a vital principle. Mr Cabalza said that such stance often can make coordinated action difficult despite the clear and present threat of terrorism in the region.
The Philippines forces lately were credited for ending the siege of Marawi city decisively even as the IS employed resources and launched a call for its followers to launch a jihad.  UNI

Manila, Nov 13: Stage is set for the beginning of the 31st ASEAN Summit here on Monday.Besides attending the multi-nation meeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also scheduled to have a crucial round of one-on-one meeting with the US President Donald Trump.
This year's theme - 'Partnering for Change, Engaging the World' best captures the geo-political situation in the region, while covers the complexities faced by ASEAN as a group and also by a few individual nations. The year 2017 also marks the 50th anniversary of the ASEAN. 
The 31st Summit will take place alongside related meetings and a special celebration of 'ASEAN@50'. The ten members of ASEAN include Brunei Darussalam,Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia,Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. The occasion also coincides with the ASEAN-India Summit. PM Modi arrived here on Monday to a grand reception by Indian diaspora. "Enthusiastic welcome by Indian Diaspora. PM @narendramodi greeted by members of Diaspora, who form an important niche group of Filipino society," MEA spokesman Raveesh Kumar tweeted.  On the eve of his visit, Prime Minister Modi said, "My participation in the meet symbolizes India's commitment to continue deepening relationship with ASEAN Member States, in particular, and with the Indo-Pacific region, in general, within the framework of my Government's Act East Policy". The Ministry of External Affairs sources have confirmed Prime Minister's meeting the US President Donald Trump here on the sidelines of ASEAN meets on Monday.  Sources said the two leaders will hold one-on-one talks for over half-an-hour minute on Monday afternoon. Mr Trump arrived Manila as part of his five-nation Asia tour of Japan, South Korea, China, Vietnam, and the Philippines. Both Mr Modi and the US President will discuss security scenario especially in Indo-Pacific region. Besides key bilateral meetings, including the one with the Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte, Prime Minister Modi will visit International Rice Institute and Mahaveer Philippines Foundation. The world famous 'Jaipur Foot', made by Rajasthan based Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang  Sahayata Samiti, is to get a pat on its back from Prime Minister.   Mr Modi will meet members of the Indian community at a reception to be hosted by Indian envoy in Philippines. The International Rice Research Institute located at Los Banos near Manila, is a leading institute of global repute. 
Through scientific research and development, it has developed better quality of rice seed and helped the global community including Indian scientists in addressing issues of food security. 
A large number of Indian scientists are also working in the institute. The institute will also soon set up its South Asian Regional Centre in Varanasi, Mr Modi's parliamentary constituency. 
This will be the first center outside Philippines.  The Mahaveer Philippines Foundation is an associate centre of Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti based in Jaipur, which is famous for "Jaipur Foot'.  The philanthropic organization, which has been set up by eminent Filipinos and Indian expat community, has distributed free "Jaipur Foot' to needy amputees. 
Mr Modi will also address the ASEAN Business Investment Summit,while other meetings are also lined up either on Monday or Tuesday. Among them the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) will try to take a call on free trade and non-tarrif barriers.
The RCEP in effect comprises of 10-member, ASEAN members and also and six other countries that are India, China, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand. Officials of 16 member nations met here at the margins of high profile ASEAN Summit and other meetings on Sunday.

Manila, Nov 13: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday visited the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) at Los Banos near here.
The institute is working towards developing better quality of rice seed and addressing food scarcity issues. A large number of Indian scientists are also working in IRRI and contributing to Research and Development in these areas, said a series of tweets from the Prime Minister's Office. "In July 2017, the Cabinet approved a proposal for IRRI to set up its South Asia Regional Centre at Varanasi. This will be the first Research Centre by IRRI outside its headquarters in the Philippines," another tweet said. The Varanasi Centre would help increase farmers' income by enhancing and supporting rice productivity, reducing cost of production, value addition, diversification and enhancement of farmers' skills, another missive in the micro blogging site said. Since its establishment, this particular foundation has fitted nearly 15,000 amputees in the Philippines with the Jaipur Foot making them capable of living a new life," Secretary East in MEA, Preeti Saran said in Delhi. It will be not the first time that 'Jaipur foot' and the makers would come into focus. In 2014, the Prime Minister had lauded the efforts of the Jaipur-based organisation, for holding a special camp at Srinagar in Kashmir Valley to provide artificial limbs and other aids to 1,300 people, who have lost their limbs. Mr Modi will also participate in a special celebration to mark the 50th year of ASEAN. "ASEAN is central to India’s Act East Policy, therefore our Prime Minister’s participation in the ASEAN India Summit and the East Asia Summit, provides a very important opportunity to reiterate our commitment to the partnership," Ms Saran has said.
'Jaipur Foot' specializes in offering to the users equipment that looks like a normal limb and is also waterproof. The 'foot' may be worn with or without shoes and the normal life is about three years. UNI
