Agartala, Nov 6: Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh advised Indigenous Peoples’ Front of Tripura (IPFT) leaders to initiate discussion with the state government towards their demand for carving out Twipraland from the present geography of the state. A nine member delegation of IPFT led by its president N C Debbarma met Rajnath Singh yesterday at his official residence to pursue their demand of separate state. However, the meeting was not fruitful, as central government wants state government on board. Debbarma said that the Home Minister had paid patient hearing on the demand during brief discussion and agreed to the justification of the demand and assured to consider forming a high power committee to discuss modalities of forming a new state. However, he indicated the state government has to send the proposal to the centre in favour of the demand and from which central government will start it’s working.
“We told him clearly that Tripura is being ruled by a communist government and opposing the demand of separate state, which sought to attain development autonomy for the indigenous people of Tripura. We however, requested Rajnathji to consider initiating the process at central level,” Debbarma told media over phone from Delhi. He, however, pointed out that they had given a comprehensive account on the status of tribal regiona in Tripura and sufferings of the indigenous population of the state during left rule and added, “Also we have detailed him about the conspiracy of CPI-M against anti-left tribal supporters to break harmony in Tripura and atrocities by police.”
IPFT has been fighting for separate tribal state by elevating the status of Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (ADC) for one and half decade but it was not supported by any other political parties and social organisations. To press for their demand, IPFT had blockade National Highway 44 in eastern Agartala for 10 days in July this year.
During the blockade, IPFT leaders had held separate meetings with the central leaders of  ifferent parties including Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju seeking support towards their demand but did not succeed. The central government had advised IPFT to withdraw the blockade and normalise the situation to initiate discussion in a democratic ambiance. The IPFT had to withdraw the movement but it triggered anger among the tribal communities that resulted violence in different locations of the state. While BJP called anti-left parties to join together against CPI-M in the upcoming assembly poll under Northeast Democratic Alliance (NEDA), IPFT wanted commitment towards their demand.
Rejecting to the demand of separate Twipraland, BJP instead proposed to elevate ADC to State Council with more autonomy and power if BJP comes in power in next election. Though BJP could succeed to bring all other major oppositions including INPT, Trinamool Congress and a faction of IPFT into their fold, the major section of IPFT led by N C Debbarma is still negotiating. Meanwhile, CPI-M State Secretary Bijan Dhar said that BJP and IPFT have already came into an adjustment to unseat left front from power by adopting unfair means and violence. RSS and BJP have been pumping money to the decisive elements to create terror ahead of election to break amity between tribal and non-tribal. “Before going for highway blockade IPFT leaders held meeting with MoS of Prime Minister’s office Dr Jitendra Singh, and whatever they have been doing in the past one year has been guided and funded by BJP. The IPFT has been triggering terror in the mixed populated areas and raising false allegations against police to destabilise the situation but people of Tripura will not allow it. The 8th left front government will come in power in the next election and retreat journey of Modi will begin from here,” Dhar stated. On the other hand, BJP State President Biplab Kumar Deb rubbished the statement of CPI-M and labelled counter allegations against CPI-M that IPFT has been getting support of the state government and the ruling CPI-M otherwise, how could they block the only national highway of Tripura for 10 days without any problem. “We have made our point very clear that BJP doesn’t support separate state demand and no alliance or poll adjustment of BJP would be possible with any party on pre-condition. But we are sympathetic to the sufferings of tribals under left rule,” Deb added. UNI
