Srinagar, Mar 5: Despite tense situation in the Kashmir valley following strike called by
separatists, the weekly Karvan-e-Aman bus, operating between Srinagar and
Muzaffarabad, capital of Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK) left here on Monday
morning to cross over to other side of the border, official sources said.
The peace bus left here around 0800 hrs from Bemina area of
the city for Kaman post, the last Indian military post on this side of the Line
of Control (LoC) in Uri sector, official sources told.
The bus has since reached Trade Facilitation Centre (TFC),where more passengers will board it before proceedings towards Kaman post, they added.. However, the number of passengers travelling to other side will be known only in the afternoon when more people will board it at TFC at Uri.
Similarly, they said, passengers travelling from PoK will also be known in the evening when peace bus will arrive at Kaman post.
The bus, introduced on April 7,2005 despite opposition by militants, have helped thousands of families divided in 1947 to meet each other. However, only state subjects from both sides are eligible to travel in the bus provided their names are cleared by the intelligence agencies from India and Pakistan.
The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), comprising Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq and Mohammad Yaseen Malik have called for a general strike today against the Shopian incident where a Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) militant and four others were killed in an encounter with Army at Pahnoo, Shopian, Sunday night.
