Patna, Mar 19: Amid walkout from NDA by TDP over refusal by Narendra Modi government to
consider special status demand for Andhra Pradesh, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish
Kumar today reiterated the demand for granting special status to the state,
saying he was still serious as earlier on the issue.
Mr Kumar told media persons here that Andhra Pradesh Chief
Minister and President of TDP Chandra Babu Naidu had demanded special status
for his state and it was right for any politician to make such demand from the
Centre but the charges levelled against him of being silent on the issue of
special status demand for Bihar, was baseless.
" We have been demanding special status category for Bihar since the UPA government was in power at the Centre", Chief Minister said adding that a memorandum was also submitted to this effect to the then Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh. When Raghuram Rajan committee was constituted to study the backwardness of states, representative of Bihar in the committee, had given its dissent note, he added.
Mr Kumar said that there was no doubt over the fact that Bihar was one of the most backward states of the country and the Centre should grant it to special status category for accelerating the pace of growth and improving condition of the people of the state. There was no laxity on part of his government in exerting pressure on the Centre for acceptance of special status demand to Bihar, he remarked. UNI
