Traffic restored on Kashmir highway, Leh & Mughal roads remain closed

Srinagar, Mar 2: Only one-way traffic resumed on the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway, the only road linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, after remaining closed for several hours due to landslides and shooting stones, triggered by rain, at several places on Friday.

However, the national highway, connecting Ladakh region with Kashmir and historic Mughal road remained closed due to accumulation of snow and slippery road conditions since December last year.
“Traffic was restored on the national highway at around 1300 hrs after remaining suspended since this morning following landslides and shooting stones at several place,” a traffic police official told.
He said traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway was suspended this morning following landslides and shooting stones at several place, including Digdol.
However, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, immediately pressed into service sophisticated machines and men to put through the traffic. Traffic was allowed on the highway after landslides were cleared.
“Since only one-way traffic was being allowed on the highway to avoid any traffic jam or accident, today vehicles are plying from Jammu to Srinagar,” he said.
Hundreds of Kashmir bound vehicles, including those carrying passengers and trucks loaded with essentials, which were stranded Nagrota, Udhampur and Jammu, left for Srinagar, he said, adding no vehicle will be allowed from opposite direction. UNI
