Kolkata, Apr 21: The
West Bengal State Election Commission is expected to announce fresh poll dates
for three-tier Panchayet elections across West Bengal after discussion and
consultations with both the ruling AITC and oppositions - the BJP, Left and
Congress today, a day after
the Calcutta High Court on Friday cancelled previous dates
for May 1, 3 and 5.
Justice Subrata Talukdar of Calcutta High Court on Friday cancelled the Commission's notification that quashed its earlier order of extending the nomination process by one day on April 10 and directed the CEO to issue fresh date for filing of nomination papers.
The election office sources said the ruling Trinamool Congress government wanted the commission to announce fresh poll dates on Friday evening itself, hours after HC's order, but the poll body wanted to have meetings with the opposition parties separately, especially of those who had filed cases on panchayat election irregularities.
Last week, the court issued a stay on the filing of nominations following allegations of large scale violence by the Opposition parties.
State chief electoral officer Amarendra Kumar Singh has filed time after 1 pm today to call the political parties in batches to have their opinions on fresh poll dates, which may be held in second or third week of May, 2018. The commission will also have meeting with the state officials for poll arrangements.
The BJP, the Left parties and Congress had filed cases separately seeking the court directive after their party nominees were allegedly manhandled by the ruling supporters and prevented from filing nomination papers between April 2-9.
Now the opposition parties were demanding deployment of central forces during fresh nomination filing and during poll dates so that people can exercises their voting rights. The state government, however, wanted to have security management with state police forces.
About 5.08 crore electorate or 74 per cent of the electors will vote in the polls. UNI
