petition filed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accusing the Trinamool
Congress (TMC) party activists of preventing the BJP candidates from filing
nominations for the upcoming Panchayat elections in the state.
A division bench of the Apex Court, headed by Justice R. K.
Agrawal and also comprising Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre reserved its order on
Friday, for Monday, after hearing in detail the arguments put forth by the
petitioner, respondents.
It is to be noted that the last date for filing of nominations for the upcoming Panchayat elections in West Bengal is April 9, Monday.
West Bengal (WB) state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also, in its petition, sought an extension of Panchayat election date. The petition also pleaded for deployment of paramilitary forces.
Appearing for the WB State BJP, Supreme Court advocate Aishwarya Bhati, had submitted before the Apex Court that the BJP candidates and workers are allegedly being threatened, intimidated and subjected to physical violence to deter them from filing nominations for the upcoming state Panchayat elections.
Bhati had further mentioned before the Top Court that a BJP Dalit leader has been allegedly murdered by certain TMC workers and it seemed that there is a systematic physical violence unleashed by the ruling TMC party to prevent filing of nominations by the BJP candidates. UNI
