New Delhi, Jul 9: Schools in the National Capital Region (NCR) must emulate the model of Delhi government-run schools in terms of making much-needed improvements to facilities and teaching methods, noted a parents' satisfaction survey conducted by ASSOCHAM.

The state governments of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Rajasthan having thirteen, seven and two districts that, along with NCT of Delhi, make up the NCR, must take a cue from Delhi government and allocate large chunk of their budget to education, according to the survey conducted by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) and Social Development Foundation (ASDF).

The industry body interacted with about 3,250 parents in districts falling in NCR whose children are studying in local government schools.

The survey was conducted during summer holidays in May-June to ascertain the views of people in general about their level of satisfaction in government schools of their respective districts.

"Almost all the parents were of the view that Delhi government is doing a commendable job for bringing overall improvement in the school education as every parent wants schools with good amount of facilities in their own area.

"Many of them said that through various media reports and views of their relatives and known people they have learnt about Delhi government model of schools that have undergone a metamorphosis of late," the survey said.

Releasing the findings of the survey, ASSOCHAM secretary general D S Rawat said, A lot is being done in the education sector both at the Centre and state government levels in Delhi. With Delhi government providing state-of-the-art facilities, improving infrastructure and quality of education, other state governments must follow suit to help shape a bright future for our children.

During the survey parents were also asked about how satisfied they were with various aspects of the school their child currently attended, including the school overall, the teachers, academic standards, order and discipline, facilities and the way the school staff interacted with parents.

"Majority of respondents in all the districts said there were many areas that need to be improved. Some said that proactive approach was needed to ensure wholesome development of children, equal focus on education and extracurricular activities, conducting classes in creative writing, dance, theatre, fine arts and other such subjects by hiring specialised teachers," the survey report said.

New Delhi, March 29: Most cyber frauds in business process outsourcing (BPO) sector in India occur due to lack of strict implementation of existing information security protocols and lack of awareness of the employee, a recent survey jointly conducted by industry body ASSOCHAM and software major Microsoft said.
The survey was conducted in Delhi-NCR and Kolkata to ascertain the level of awareness regarding cyber frauds among people employed in the sector.
It was noted that awareness about cyber frauds was low among fresher and job applicants, but it was relatively higher in experienced employees.
Highlighting the poor levels of awareness among fresher and job applicants, the survey noted that perceptions about cyber frauds are mostly driven by word of mouth and media. Besides, the predominant perception for causes of cyber frauds is the growing shift of online transactions — from shopping to banking and consumers' growing trust on Internet and its safety nets.
While enough measures exist in the BPO sector to keep a check on cyber frauds, it is the lack of seriousness at the organisational level towards the issue which is the root cause to the problem as casual attitude is often passed down to employees, according to the survey.
It was also revealed that there is certain casualness, as the general feeling is that most cyber frauds occur on a larger scale, and the security staff is not aware of implications of not following proper protocols.
The survey also suggested immediate steps to drive home seriousness about cyber frauds - including comprehensive session on cyber fraud in induction programme, implement stringent security measures, install strong antivirus systems, organise sessions on ethical practices, implement training and development programmes. UNI

Kolkata, Mar 25 : If the tariff war escalates into a full-scale global trade war, it would have a collateral damage for the Indian economy as well, with the country's exports taking a hit, current account deficit facing pressure and the GDP taking a setback, the ASSOCHAM has said.
"Instead of de-escalating, the trade tensions between the US and China with the fall out impact on other trading majors, have only escalated; spooking the global financial markets. The tensions in the market look quite justified, as the Trump move to levy tariff on trading partners could lead to a further retaliation against the US . Though India may not get much of a direct impact, the collateral damage could be in the form of adverse impact on the overall sentiment," the chamber today said in a statement.
The ASSOCHAM Secretary General D S Rawat said, even if India chooses to take a responsive action on its imports, the impact on "our exports could be more even as the volatility in the foreign exchange rates would also rise". He said "we must have a backup plan which should include opening bilateral trade with key trading partners, taking precaution that we remain WTO compliant."
In case the market confidence is further eroded, there would be outflow of portfolio investment taking a toll on the dollar rates. Besides, as the US dollar is used as a safe haven in the midst of global uncertainties, its increased demand would put pressure on the Indian currency along with those of the other currencies of the emerging markets.
"It is no more a scenario where it was considered only a threat. The US administration has started signing the orders on tariff revision and other protective measures. In the process, the influence of multilateral organisations like the World Trade Organisation is also on the wane. When countries get into this kind of a slugfest, the multilateral regime takes a big knock," the chamber said.
However, the chamber complimented the Indian government for taking an initiative to host a meeting of over 50 ministers under the aegis of the WTO for espousing the cause of open trade.UNI

New Delhi, Jan 16: Apex industry body ASSOCHAM has urged the Centre to impose 10 per cent customs duty on import of hardwood chemical pulp and bleached chemi-thermo mechanical pulp (BCTMP) to encourage domestic pulp production, provide fillip to job creation and promote overall economic development of India’s vast rural hinterland housing pulpwood plantations.
“These measures would help energise creation of sustainable sources of fibre required by Indian pulp and paper industry,” noted the ASSOCHAM pre-budget recommendations on indirect taxes submitted with the Union Government.
ASSOCHAM has also sought policy measures to be put in place to facilitate private sector participation in plantation development programmes.
Besides, the chamber has also recommended that import of capital goods required by paper and paperboard industry for technological up-gradation especially aimed at environmental protection and for compliance with Corporate Responsibility for Environmental Protection (CREP) be permitted at ‘nil’ rate of customs duty.
It has also suggested that exports by manufacturers who have adopted environment friendly technology are granted additional incentives as cash incentive of five per cent of Free on Board (FOB).
It is estimated that more than 1.25 million metric tonnes (MMT) of pulp approximately valued at 710 million dollar (about Rs 4,600 crore) is imported into India each year.
In May 2012, the Government reduced import duty on pulp from five per cent to ‘nil.’ The customs duty foregone on account of these imports is estimated to be about Rs 245 crore per annum. UNI
