Thane, Jun 8 : Two men, including one from Delhi, have been booked for allegedly abetting the suicide of a 56-year-old real estate developer from Kalyan in Thane district, police said today.

The victim, Asif Zojwalla, had allegedly committed suicide in March this year. He had paid Rs 7 crore to the accused, who had promised to make him the chairman of City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), police said.

A case was registered against the duo - Sanjay Ghosh and a Delhi resident Pravin Singh - on June 5, based on a complaint filed by Zojwalla's wife, who is a member of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) better known as the Censor Board.

"The victim was into real estate business in Kalyan and surrounding areas. In June 2014, Ghosh, who is a resident of Thane, met Zojwalla and told him that he could make him the chairman of CIDCO, for which he has to pay Rs 7 crore," Thane police spokesperson Sukhada Narkar said.

Ghosh told Zojwalla that that one of his friends from Delhi, Pravin Singh, would help him in the process. Believing him, the victim raised money, part of which he got as loan from friends, and paid Rs 7 crore to the accused, she said.

Between 2015 and 2018 the victim repeatedly asked them about their promise. However, they kept giving evasive answers, police said.

"On a few occasions, the duo even met the victim at his family functions and also at a funeral of his relative.

Ultimately, he realised that he has been duped and told this to his wife.

"Later on, the duo finally told him that he will neither become the chairman of CIDCO nor will he get his money back. After this, he went into depression," the police spokesperson said.

On March 5, when the complainant had gone for some CBFC-related work, the victim hanged himself at their residence, police said.

A week after his death, Zojwalla's family members decided to give his car for servicing. At that time, they found his diary inside the vehicle. A note written in the diary dated December 18, 2017 said that he was upset after being duped by the duo, Narkar said.

"After going through the note, the victim's kin felt that he had taken the extreme step after being duped by Ghosh and Singh. However, they were scared to lodge a complaint in this regard. On May 17, they handed over the diary to police and his wife lodged a complaint on June 5," she added.

A case under IPC sections 306 (abetment of suicide) and 420 (cheating) has been registered against Ghosh and Singh at MFC police station in Kalyan division. They were yet to be arrested.PTI

New Delhi, Apr 12: The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to give an urgent hearing to Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) seeking a stay on the Friday release of Punjabi film 'Nanak Shah Fakir'.
The SGPC pleaded to the apex court's three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra and also comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, that it is the statutory religious body having genuine religious grievance against anyone playing the role of a Sikh Guru or his relative in the film.
The apex court said even if the SGPC is a statutory religious body it cannot interfere with the certificate, given by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), for public screening of the film granted by the Censor Board.
Refusing SGPC's repeated request for hearing of its petition either on Thursday or Friday, the bench said,'Once the CBFC gives clearance, no one can object to release of a film without taking recourse to lawful means.' UNI

New Delhi, Jan 22: The Supreme Court said on Monday it will hear the pleas of the Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh state governments on Tuesday seeking modification in it's earlier order in connection with the controversial Hindi Film, Padmaavat.
Both the state governments -- Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh -- on Monday knocked the doors of the apex court pleading for a modification of the apex court's earlier order.
A three-judge bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra and also comprising Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud, said, "we would hear both the state government's pleas tomorrow".
The top court had in its earlier interim order given a go ahead to the Hindi Film Padmaavat, and directed to release it in all the states, including those four states where it was banned.
The apex court also had, in its earlier order, stayed the notification issued by the four states -- Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana. The film was banned in these four states keeping in view the "fact that the film if released might lead to a law and order problem".
The top court, had while passing the interim order, said, all states are constitutionally obliged to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incident during the screening of the film across India, a permission granted by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). UNI

New Delhi, Jan 19: The Supreme Court on Friday refused to entertain plea seeking quashing of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) certificate clearing for screening of the controversial Hindi film 'Padmavat'.
While refusing to entertain the petition filed by the lawyer, Manohar Lal Sharma, a three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra, and also comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, said, the court has to function as a constitutional court and it has already yesterday in its interim order had said that the states cannot block a movie from screening.
The petitioner submitted before the court that in the light of law and order problems in various states, this court should quash the CBFC certificate.
'We held the decision of the CBFC yesterday, and today, we could not hear your plea. The law and order is not our job that is the job of the government and thus rejected the lawyer's plea,' the bench added.
The petitioner said that the issuance of certificate by CBFC was against the law.
This comes a day after the Supreme Court, in its interim order, cleared the decks for the nationwide release of Hindi film 'Padmavat'. UNI

New Delhi, Jan 18: The Supreme Court in its interim order on Thursday issued a green signal on the controversial Hindi film, "Padmavat", and directed to release it in all the states, including those states where the film has been banned.
The apex court three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra and also comprising Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud, in its interim order on Thursday, also stayed the notification issued by the four states of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana.
The film was banned in these four states -- Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana -- keeping in view the situation that its release could lead to a law and order problem.
The apex court, in its interim order, said, all states are constitutionally obliged to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incident during the screening of the film across India, a permission granted by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
Senior Supreme Court lawyer, Harish Salve, and former Attorney-General, Mukul Rohatgi, both appeared for Viacom.

The comment has come in the wake of reports appearing in some local newspapers in the state that the state police in its intelligence report to the state government recently had cautioned against the release of the film.
The uniformed force had cautioned the government as already its chunk of personnel were engaged in discharging law and order duties due to peak tourism season.

New Delhi, Dec 1: Coming out in support of makers of the film 'Padmavati', which has been facing protests from several sections of society for its alleged distortion of facts, Bollywood actor Rajkummar Rao has said people should not have preconceived notions about any film before seeing it.
Speaking at the CNN news 18 Indian of the Year awards here on Thursday night, Rao said, 'We should not have preconceived notions about any film before seeing it.
We have a government certified body — the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) — which is responsible for passing the film.
Once you see a film — I don't mean only Padmavati — you often find there's no distortion of facts (or history) as is alleged.
'Rao, who was awarded the Indian of the Year award in Entertainment, said, 'I do feel nervous, but it's that nervous energy that keeps me going.
It's been a wonderful journey so far.
I saw this dream — of being a film actor — in this very city, Delhi.
''In fact, my mother believed in this dream even more than me.
So it feels like a dream.
It's tough in the film industry, but I'm grateful for the way my family, teachers, friends have stood by me.
The way Patralekha has stood by me.
I hope (this good fortune) continues,' said the actor who has won accolades for his performance in several films like 'Citylights ', 'Aligarh ' and India's nominee to the Oscars 'Newton'.
Asked if he thought Newton would win the Oscar in the Best Foreign language Film Category, Rao said, "We're keeping our fingers crossed.
I'm pretty hopeful that we will make it." UNI

New Delhi, Nov 29: Protesting against the revocation of the Censor certificate of the controversial film 'S Durga', which was not allowed to be screened at the IFFI despite an order of the Kerala High Court, the film's director Sanal Sasidharan has said the move was part of a larger conspiracy to smother common man’s voice.
“The revocation of the Censor certificate is part of the larger conspiracy to smother the common man’s voice.
We see it all around us these days.
Now it’s come to us filmmakers.
I am being accused of contravening the rules,” Sasidharan said.
The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) decided to revoke the film’s censor certificate allegedly for a contravention of guidelines.
Speaking on the issue, IFFI jury’s acting chairperson Rahul Rawail said, “the Censor certificate for Sexy Durga has been revoked, so there was no question of the film being screened at IFFI.
The director Sanal Sasidharan had been asked to change the film’s title from Sexy Durga to S Durga.
He has put three ‘X’s after the ‘S’ in the word ‘Sexy’.
This amounts to a serious contravention of the rules and he could go to be legally answerable for this flouting of rules.”Sasidharan, however, said that he has broken no rules.
“But the 3 ‘X’s are the only way I could change the title without having to bear the expenses of getting new publicity posters done.
I am sorry, but there is no contravention.
This is nothing but a final attempt to stop my film from being screened at the IFFI.
They have succeeded in stopping my film.
But we should all be worried about the future of democracy in our country,'Sasidharan said.
In a facebook post, the filmmaker said that the revocation of his film's censor certificate had sent across a 'dangerous' message that those in power could go to any extent to destroy something which they don't like.
'It is simply proved that, those in power now, can go to any extent to destroy something which they don't like.
They can even misuse law or ignore judiciary for their purpose.
They can give assurances to executives that nothing will happen to them, even if they do not obey courts.
A very dangerous message indeed,' he said.
Sasidharan said that he would continue his fight.
“Let’s see when the CBFC will issue a new certificate for my film.
I can’t say I’m enjoying this silly game.
But I will see it to its logical end,'he said.
'S Durga' along with another film "Nude' had been dropped from the list of films to be screened at IFFI despite the IFFI jury having selected them.
After the makers of 'S Durga' approached the Kerala High Court against this decision, it issued orders to screen the film on November 24.
A screening for the jury was held on Monday evening and a majority of the members of the jury cleared the screening of the film.
However, hours before the screening, the CBFC revoked the censor certificate saying that the jury had complained that the title of the movie was shown differently from the censored version, as 'S Durga'.
The film had won the Hivos Tiger Award at the International Film Festival of Rotterdam this year, the first Indian film to win at that festival. UNI

New Delhi, Nov 28: The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a petition seeking to stall the release of 'Padmavati' outside India.
While dismissing the petition, a three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra, observed that when the matter is pending consideration of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), how can persons holding public offices comment on whether the CBFC should issue certificate or not? This will prejudice the decision making power of the CBFC.
The bench dismissed the plea filed by lawyer Manohar Lal Sharma and slammed him for filing a frivolous petition.
The petitioner has also sought the deletion of objectionable scenes from the film.
"All concerned people holding responsible post must be guided by the rule of law and should not pass comments on films which have not been cleared by the CBFC. It will prejudice the mind of board members while taking a decision on the film," the bench, also comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, said in the order. UNI
