New Delhi, Oct 9 (PTI) After nearly a month-long stir, sanitation workers of the cash-strapped EDMC Tuesday ended their strike after the civic authority agreed to accept their demands, a union leader claimed.
The workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) had gone on strike on September 12 demanding regular payment of salaries and regularisation of workers. "We called off our strike today, as the mayor gave us assurance that contractual workers would be regularised in a phased manner," president of MCD Swachhata Karmchari Union Sanjay Gahlot said. The union also decided to call off the strike keeping public interest in mind as heaps of garbage, dumped at public places, were posing a health risk, he added."We had separate meetings with the East Delhi mayor and the commissioner on Tuesday and they both gave assurances about regularisation of contractual workers employed after March 1998. Our other demands are also being looked into," he said.Incidentally, the decision to end the stir comes days after the EDMC vowed to take strict action against the agitating workers.On Monday, the civic body had terminated the services of 26 contractual sanitation workers and suspended 17 others, with immediate effect for allegedly "creating obstruction" in work. However, Gahlot claimed that the suspension will be revoked."The mayor also gave us verbal assurance that these workers would also be restored," Gahlot claimed.The EDMC on Friday had issued a circular directing all the sanitation workers to resume work from October 6. As decided earlier, the authorities had also regularised services of six sanitation workers engaged on or after April 1, 1998, on the basis of seniority, the civic body said Monday. The EDMC has around 16,000 workers, half of whom are permanent employees. On September 26, it had decided to begin the process for permanent employment of contractual sanitation workers who were recruited after March 31, 1998.
Chandigarh, Jun 25 : People across the state faced inconvenience as contractual employees of the state-owned Punjab Roadways went on a day-long strike today in support of various demands, including regularisation of their services and raise in salaries.
The protestors did not let buses of Punjab Roadways and Punbus ply in several places, including Ludhiana, Amritsar, Ferozepur, Moga and Jalandhar, forcing passengers to opt for private buses or taxies.
Nearly 3,000 contractual employees of the Punjab Roadways and the Punbus are on strike and around 1,800 buses off the roads, protesting employees said.
Bus services on the inter-state routes and within the state were affected, they claimed.
"We have been fighting for our rights for the past several years. But neither the previous government nor the present paid heed to our demands," Chander Shekhar, vice president of Road Transport Workers Federation, said here.
Protesters have been demanding regularisation of services, hike in salaries and implementation of the Supreme Court ruling of equal work and equal pay.
They said a number of meetings had been held with the senior authorities of the transport department with regard to their demands, but nothing had been done yet.
Protesting employees even blocked the entry and exit points of some bus stands from 12 noon to 2 pm to prevent the movement of buses.
"We are left with no option but to go on strike to press the state government to accept our demands," a protesting employee said in Ferozepur.PTI

appealed Anganwadi workers to call off their strike and assured that their
genuine demands will be addressed at earliest.
She said this while speaking to a deputation of
Anganwadi workers and Helpers Union Jammu and Kashmir who called on the
minister today. The Minister said it is the endeavor of the government to work
for the betterment of employees besides taking various measures to fulfil their
genuine demands.
During the meeting, the deputation apprised the
minister about several issues being faced by them while rendering their duties
on ground and appealed for early redressal of their genuine demands at an
earliest.
While assuring the deputation that their genuine
demands will be looked into, she appealed them to resume their work without
causing further inconvenience to Early Childhood Education.
