Gangtok, Apr 11 :  An estimated 69 per cent of the voters in Sikkim have exercised their franchise till 5 pm on Thursday to elect a 32-member state Legislative Assembly as well as the lone Lok Sabha member from the state, an official said.

The polling percentage will go up as large number of voters who have queued up at polling stations till 5 pm would be allowed to vote, the CEO said.

There was no report of any violence from anywhere in the state during the polling of the state Assembly and the lone Lok Sabha seat which was held simultaneously, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Ravindra Telang told.

Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling exercised his franchise at Namchi New Secondary School in South Sikkim's Namchi-Singhiyhang assembly seat.

A total of 4,32,306 voters comprising 2,20,305 males and 2,12,001 females were eligible to exercise their franchise on Thursday.

A total of 150 candidates are in fray for the 32 assembly seats, while 11 candidates are contesting for the lone Lok Sabha seat in the state.

Chamling, who is seeking an eighth successive term as an MLA, is contesting from two assembly seats - Poklok-Kamrang and Namchi-Singhithang.

Former Indian football captain Bhaichung Bhutia, the working president of the Hamro Sikkim party (HSP) has entered into fray from two assembly seats as well, including the Gangtok assembly constituency, reserved for the indigenous Bhutia-Lepcha communities.             [Agencies]

Gangtok, Sep 24: Sikkim's dream of having an airport will come true on Monday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate an aerodrome at Pakyong, around 33 km from here.

The foundation stone of the greenfield airport was laid in 2009.

Modi will also address a gathering at St. Xavier's School at Pakyong after inaugurating the airport, officials said.

The prime minister reached here on Sunday evening in an MI-8 chopper from Bagdogra and was received by Governor Ganga Prasad, Chief Minister Pawan Chamling and others at Libing Army Helipad.

He was given a gun salute by the Army there.

From the Army helipad, the prime minister's entourage travelled around 5 km to the Raj Bhawan where he stayed for the night. (PTI)

Gangtok, Sep 15: Continuous downpour on Friday triggered fresh landslides in North Sikkim, already battered by rains and widespread landslips since Sunday.

There was no information on loss of human lives due to the landslides, a district official said.

The fresh landslides were reported at Passingdong village in Dzongu.

The residents of the houses that are in danger have been shifted to safer locations, the official said, adding that incessant rain in North Sikkim since Sunday is triggering landslides in different areas at regular intervals.

Fifty houses, school buildings and roads were damaged in the landslides reported from Dzongu, Mangan, Lachen and Mangshilla in North district of the land-locked state since Sunday, the official said.

The district remains isolated from the rest of the country due to snapping of road connectivity, the official said.

The road between Mangan and Chungthang has been affected by many landslides and it is likely to take about a month to open the road for vehicular traffic, the official said.

The district administration has set up a control room and disaster help lines to help the people in distress.

State Forest minister and local MLA T W Lepcha and Deputy Speaker of Sikkim Assaembly Sonam Gyatso Lepcha on Saturday visited the affected areas in and around Mangan with the district collector, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) and other officials.

The team visited the Rafong Khola slide where a temporary log bridge has been built by the Forest Department.

The landslides at Rafong Khola are still active due to which there is a major problem in the movement of people.

The team visited the Lanthey Khola slide, where the road has been completely damaged by landslide.

The streams are flowing in full spate, bringing down boulders and causing landsldes, which has cut off the road network.

A meeting was held to review the situation in the district during which District Collector Karma R Bonpo briefed the team about the extent of damages reported from across North District.

He said teams headed by sub-divisional magistrates will be providing relief to the people.

The restoration of the road network is being carried out by the Border Roads Organisation, Road & Bridges Department and the PMGSY Department.

Electricity connection to Dzongu is being restored by the Energy and Power Department and the water supply to Mangan town is being restored by the PHE Department.

The Revenue Department is carrying out the assessment of the damages to various public properties in the district.

A team of armed police has been placed on a standby for search and rescue.

The landslides across the district have damaged about 50 houses, some of which have been damaged severely.

Many schools have been damaged due to which the administration has ordered the closure of these schools. (PTI)

Gangtok, Sep 15: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Sikkim on September 23 to inaugurate the state's first airport at Pakyong, a senior official has said.

After inaugurating the airport, the prime minister will address a public meeting at St. Xaviers School ground at Pakyong and return to New Delhi the same day, Chief Secretary A K Shrivastava said after chairing a high-level meeting.

The greenfield airport, located 30km from here, will put Sikkim on the aviation map of the country.

"I am very happy to share that the hon'ble prime minister is visiting Sikkim for the second time and this time he will be inaugurating the Pakyong Airport which is ready and has undergone trial on two occasions in the month of March, 2018," the chief secretary said.

The state government has been intimated by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) and the Union Civil Aviation Ministry about the prime minister's visit and the airport inauguration, he said.

After the formal inauguration of the airport on September 23, the commercial operation of flights will commence from the airport in the first week of October, the chief secretary said. (PTI)

Gangtok, Jun 20 : Renowned music composer A R Rahman has been appointed as the Brand Ambassador of the Sikkim government, an official notification said.

Rahman will promote and project the state's achievements nationally and globally, the notification issued by the Chief Secretary A K Srivastava said.

Sikkim, with its natural and pristine beauty, has over the last two decades emerged as a world famous eco-tourism destination, besides attaining a distinct identity as the first fully organic farming state of the country, it said on Monday.

The state government had earlier this year made Rahman its Brand Ambassador of tourism and business. PTI

Gangtok, Jun 15: Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu's two-day Sikkim visit was cancelled today due to inclement weather, officials said.
An ICFAI University spokesperson informed the audience at the convocation function that Naidu could not attend the function as permission could not be granted for the vice president's aircraft to take off for Gangtok from Bagdogra due to inclement weather.
The vice president tweeted "Reached Bagdogra to proceed to Gangtok, Sikkim, today. Since the weather is not permitting us, I am planning to proceed to Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh." 
The vice president was scheduled to preside over convocation of the ICFAI University and visit the National Research Centre for Orchid at Pakyong, about 35 km from the state capital. (PTI)

Gangtok, Jun 12: Bhaichung Bhutia, footballer -turned-politician, has voiced concern over the growing problem of substance abuse among Sikkimese youths and criticised the state government for being apathetic to the menace.
The national media has taken notice of the issue, but unfortunately, the state government headed by Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling has done nothing to stop it, Bhutia, the co-founder of Hamro Sikkim Party (HSP), said in a Facebook post.
"A beautiful state of Sikkim, known for its green landscapes, monasteries and shrines is slowly succumbing to drugs with the youths falling prey to substance abuse," the former Indian football captain said.
Bhutia has launched an all out attack on the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) government over it's failure on various issues, ever since the launch of the HSP at Daramdin in West Sikkim on May 31 this year.
The statistics relating to drug abuse in the state are scary, he said.
"It is sad that this issue has not been taken on a priority basis," he said without citing any specific data. (PTI)

One Stop Centre has come as a great sense of relief to many women affected by violence of any type. The victims of domestic violence,sexual harassment any other physical violence are given due help and shelter here.
Sikkim has increasing cases of domestic violence. Even women who married at their own choice have not been spared. The One Stop Centre started in August 2017 has come as a great relief to such women.
Union Minister for Women & Child Development Maneka Gandhi having introduced the concept in India, earlier visited the centre at Gangtok. Though she was satisfied with their work, she expressed concern at the very few number of women coming to seek help. The officials explained to her that the himalayan state has a small population. Gangtok, Jan 5: Sikkim has been decked up for the winter festival beginning January 8.
Renowned music director AR Rehman is scheduled to arrive here on January 7. He will be declared the brand ambassador of Red Panda Winter Carnival 2017-18 in Paljour Stadium, Tourism & Civil Aviation Minister Ugen Gyatso said.
Carnival Parade is an important attraction of the day. Cultural programme will also be held. While in the evening an open air programme will be organised at MG Marg.Singer Moi Chewan,will also be participating in the mega event.
All bushes planted on the main market road are glittering with multicoloured mini bulbs.
'Though Sikkim is a small state we are looking forward to grand carnival,' Mr Gyatso said.
Introducing two celebrities--Pakhi Tyerwala, director of the film ‘Pahuna’, shot here mostly, and another Bollywood director Pragya--he said they were coordinating in making the festival a success. The minister said many guests have been coming. 'But our target is to get 50 lakhs tourists. 
'Winter carnival type of events are expected to increase the number of visitors coming here. It is also expected to make Sikkim known far and wide,' he said. UNI

Former chief minister and president of the Sikkim Sangram Parishad party Nar Bahadur Bhandari passed away yesterday at New Delhi following a massive stroke.


Gangtok, Jul 17 :  Former chief minister and president of the Sikkim Sangram Parishad party Nar Bahadur Bhandari passed away yesterday at New Delhi following a massive stroke. The mortal remains of Mr Bhandari is being flown down to Bagdogra and would be escorted with a pilot for the last rites in Sikkim today. The state government has declared mourning. All political leaders across the spectrum of political ideologies have expressed shock at his untimely death. Chief minister Pawan Chamling too has expressed his grief in a social media statement.
