Polling for first phase of panchayat polls underway in Rajasthan


Jaipur, Jan 17 :  Polling started on a dull note for the first phase of panchayat elections in Rajasthan on Friday.

In the first two hours of polling, only 8.30 per cent voting was recorded, a state Election Commission spokesperson said.

Polling began at 8 am.

In the first phase, polling is being held for 26800 wards of 2726 gram panchayats of 87 panchayat samitis.

There are a total of 93,20,684 voters in these 87 Panchayat Samiti areas.

State Election Commissioner P S Mehra had said on Thursday that 17,242 candidates for the Sarpanch post and 42,000 candidates for the Panch post are in the fray.

Over 11,000 EVM machines will be used in the polls.

Counting of votes will be done today itself.

The second phase of polling will be held on January 22.

Ahmedabad, Apr 23 :  Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday said the voter ID (identity card) is more powerful than the IED (improvised explosive device) of terrorists.

He was speaking after casting his vote during the single-phase polling for Lok Sabha in his home state Gujarat.

After casting his vote, Modi walked some distance from the polling booth and interacted briefly with mediapersons.

"Indian democracy presents an example before the world. While on one hand, an IED (improvised explosive device) is the weapon of terrorists, on the other hand, the voter ID (identity) is the weapon and power of democracy," he said.

"I am confident that the power of voter ID is much more than the IED and we should understand the importance of the voter ID card and come out to vote in large numbers," he said.

Modi said he feels fortunate to participate in "the great festival of democracy" in his home state Gujarat.

"The third phase of polling is taking place today in the country. I am fortunate that I also got the proud moment to fulfil my duty by voting in my home state Gujarat and to have an active participation in this great festival of democracy," he said.

"By voting, I feel the same sense of purity that one gets after taking bath at the Kumbh mela," he told reporters.

Urging people to vote with full enthusiasm, he said, "The intelligence of Indian voters to understand whom to vote and whom not to vote is a matter of case study." 

He also welcomed the active participation of young voters, born in the 21st century, who are exercising their franchise for the first time in the ongoing Lok Sabha polls, and conveyed his best wishes to them.

"This entire century belongs to those who are voting for the first time. They have to vote for the bright future of this century. Therefore, I would especially urge the new voters to commit to hundred per cent voting," he said.

"I am grateful to all the lovers of democracy who voted in large numbers in the first and second phases of the Lok Sabha elections," he said.

Modi reached the polling station at Nishan High School in Ranip area in an open jeep in the morning and cast his vote.

On way to the polling booth, he also greeted people who had gathered on both sides of the road to welcome him.

BJP president Amit Shah, contesting from Gandhinagar Lok Sabha seat, welcomed Modi and accompanied him to the polling booth.

Modi's mother also cast her vote at a booth in Raysan village of Gandhinagar district. The 95-year-old came to the polling booth at gram panchayat office of Raysan village and exercised her franchise.

After spending the night at the Raj Bhavan in Gandhinagar, Modi met his nonagenarian mother Hiraba near the state capital early Tuesday.

Gangtok, Apr 11 :  An estimated 69 per cent of the voters in Sikkim have exercised their franchise till 5 pm on Thursday to elect a 32-member state Legislative Assembly as well as the lone Lok Sabha member from the state, an official said.

The polling percentage will go up as large number of voters who have queued up at polling stations till 5 pm would be allowed to vote, the CEO said.

There was no report of any violence from anywhere in the state during the polling of the state Assembly and the lone Lok Sabha seat which was held simultaneously, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Ravindra Telang told.

Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling exercised his franchise at Namchi New Secondary School in South Sikkim's Namchi-Singhiyhang assembly seat.

A total of 4,32,306 voters comprising 2,20,305 males and 2,12,001 females were eligible to exercise their franchise on Thursday.

A total of 150 candidates are in fray for the 32 assembly seats, while 11 candidates are contesting for the lone Lok Sabha seat in the state.

Chamling, who is seeking an eighth successive term as an MLA, is contesting from two assembly seats - Poklok-Kamrang and Namchi-Singhithang.

Former Indian football captain Bhaichung Bhutia, the working president of the Hamro Sikkim party (HSP) has entered into fray from two assembly seats as well, including the Gangtok assembly constituency, reserved for the indigenous Bhutia-Lepcha communities.             [Agencies]

Lucknow, Apr 11 :  Over 24 per cent polling has been recorded till 11 am in the eight Lok Sabha seats of western Uttar Pradesh on Thursday in the first leg of the seven-phased general elections.

Three Union ministers-- V K Singh (Ghaziabad), Satyapal Singh (Baghpat) and Mahesh Sharma (Gautam Buddha Nagar) are in the fray in this phase. 

In a statement issued here, the Election Commission said, 25.60 per cent polling was recorded in Saharanpur; 24 per cent in Kairana; 26.4 per cent in Muzaffarnagar; 25.10 per cent in Bijnor; 21.80 per cent in Meerut; 25 per cent in Baghpat; 22.40 per cent in Ghaziabad and 24.24 per cent in Gautam Buddh Nagar.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is making all-out efforts to retain all the eight Lok Sabha seats while the fledgling Samajwadi Party-Bahujan Samaj Party-Rashtriya Lok Dal alliance too is going whole hog to upset the saffron party's apple cart.

In the 2014 parliamentary elections, the BJP had won all the eight seats-- Saharanpur, Kairana, Muzaffarnagar, Bijnor, Meerut, Baghpat, Ghaziabad and Gautam Buddh Nagar.

The communally sensitive seat of Muzaffarnagar will see a clash of titans with RLD chief Ajit Singh locking horns with sitting BJP lawmaker Sanjeev Balyan. 



For the saffron party, the Kairana parliamentary constituency holds immense significance as it had tasted defeat in the Lok Sabha by-election last year.

Elaborate security arrangements have been made for this phase and over one lakh security personnel have been deployed to ensure free and fair polls, Additional Director General, Law and Order of Uttar Pradesh Police Anand Kumar said.

In the first phase, 1,50,65,682 voters-- 82,24,835 men, 68,39,833 women and 1,014 third gender-- are eligible to exercise their franchise in 16,518 booths set up inside 6,716 polling centres to decide the fate of 96 candidates.

Prominent among those in the fray include-- Imran Masood (Congress) and Raghav Lakhanpal (BJP) from Saharanpur, and Tabassum Begum (SP) from Kairana.

In Bijnor, Congress candidate and former UP minister (during Mayawati's tenure) Naseemuddin Siddiqui will challenge Raja Bharatendra Singh, while in Meerut, BJP's Rajendra Agarwal will be hoping for a repeat of 2014, while BSP's Hazi Mohammad Yaqub will be trying to checkmate him.

In Baghpat, Union minister Satyapal Singh is pitted against Jayant Chaudhary (RLD), son of Ajit Singh.

Dolly Sharma of the Congress is contesting against Union minister V K Singh, while in Gautam Buddh Nagar, it is Union minister and BJP candidate Mahesh Sharma versus Arvind Kumar Singh of the Congress.

Politically crucial Uttar Pradesh sends 80 MPs to the Lok Sabha. Of the 80 seats in UP, SP is contesting on 37 seats, BSP on 38 seats, and the RLD will contest on three seats. UP will have seven-phase polling.               [Agencies]

Ahmedabad, Mar 11 :  The Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting will be held at Gandhinagar in Gujarat on Tuesday to discuss the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

The meeting would be followed by a mega rally at Adalaj town in Gandhinagar where Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is likely to address her first public rally after entering politics.

CWC, the highest decision-making body of the Congress, will be meeting in Gujarat, the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for the first time since 1961, after a gap of 58 years.

Patidar quota agitation leader Hardik Patel will also join the Congress on Tuesday in the presence of party president Rahul Gandhi.

After the meeting at the Sardar Patel memorial building, senior Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, UPC chairperson Sonia Gandhi and former prime minister Manmohan Singh, as well as current and former party chief ministers will attend the 'Jan Sankalp' rally', state party unit chief Amit Chavda said.

Before the CWC meet, senior party leaders will visit the Gandhi Ashram to attend a prayer meet.

The leaders will pay tributes to Mahatma Gandhi as March 12 marks the launch of the historic Dandi March by him from the Sabarmati Ashram here in 1930. Besides, 2019 is also being celebrated as the 150th birth anniversary year of the Father of the Nation.

The Congress is expecting a crowd of over three lakh people in the home turf of Modi and BJP president Shah ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, a party leader said.

This will be Rahul Gandhi's second visit to Gujarat within a month in the run-up to the polls. He earlier addressed a rally in Valsad district February 14.

Chennai, Mar 11 :  The AIADMK in Tamil Nadu Monday kick-started its candidate selection process for the April 18 Lok Sabha elections in the state, with the interview of ticket aspirants of ten constituencies.

The ruling party also invited applications from aspiring candidates for the by-polls to 18 Assembly segments, which will be held along with the parliamentary polls.

Elections to 39 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu and the lone Puducherry segment will be held on April 18, the second of the seven phases of polling across the country for a total of 543 seats.

On Monday, the AIADMK Parliamentary Board, whose members include party Coordinator and state Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and Joint Coordinator and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami, interviewed the aspiring candidates for 10 constituencies including Salem, Nilgiris and Coimbatore, a party release said.

The AIADMK is heading the NDA in Tamil Nadu, whose constituents are the BJP, PMK, DMDK, Puthiya Tamizhagam and Puthiya Neethi Katchi.

The party has allotted seven seats to PMK, five to the BJP, four to the Vijayakanth-led DMDK, and one each to Puthiya Tamizhagam and Puthiya Neethi Katchi in the state, thus leaving 21 for itself as of now.

There are expectations that former Minister GK Vasan- led Tamil Maanila Congress may join the AIADMK front, giving the final shape to the combine that will take on the DMK-led alliance.

The lone Puducherry seat has been allotted to AINRC, headed by former chief minister N Rangasamy.

Further, the AIADMK invited application forms from aspirants for 18 Assembly seats in the state where bypolls are scheduled.

The filled-in forms and a fee of Rs 25,000 should be submitted on March 13 between 10 a.m and 6 p.m, it said.

The by-polls are considered crucial as it would have a bearing on the stability of the Palaniswami-led AIADMK government which needs to win a sizeable number of them to retain its majority in the 234-member House.

Bypolls would be held in Poonamallee, Perambur, Tiruporur, Sholinghur, Gudiyatham, Ambur, Hosur, Harur, Pappireddipapatti, Nilakkottai, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Manamadurai, Andipatti, Periyakulam, Sattur, Paramakudi and Vilathikulam, he had said.

Of the 18 seats, sixteen had fallen vacant following the disqualification of ruling AIADMK MLAs loyal to rival party leader TTV Dhinakaran.

The by-poll to Tiruvarur seat has been necessitated by the death of sitting member and late DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi while the Hosur seat fell vacant following the disqualification of Minister K Balakrishna Reddy after his conviction by a court in a decades-old criminal case.

Bypolls were not scheduled for Tiruparankundram, Ottapidaram and Aravakurichi constituencies, which are also vacant, in view of election petitions pending in the Madras High Court.       [Agencies]

New Delhi, Mar 10 :  Claiming that victory will be of the truth, the Congress Sunday welcomed the declaration of the Lok Sabha election schedule, saying the party along with the united opposition will defeat and dethrone the Modi government from power.

The Congress also said that it will announce seat-sharing pattern with alliance partners in Maharashtra, West Bengal and Bihar within two-three days. 

Soon after the announcement by the Election Commission, the party put out a two-minute video entitled 'aarambh hai prachand' (the beginning of something massive), showing party chief Rahul Gandhi meeting the people across the country. 

It said the party was ready for the battle and also claimed the victory of the truth for the UPA in 2019.

"The bugle is blown and now it is the turn of the public. There is adequate preparation for fighting the lies. We will defeat the 'liars' in this government, we are prepared and victory will be ours," the Congress posted in Hindi on its Twitter handle.

The party used the hashtag "JeetHogiSachKi" with its tweet.

Addressing a press conference, Congress general secretary K C Venugopal said, "The Congress and opposition are united and we are very confident that we will defeat the Modi government." 

"We welcome the much-awaited election announcement. We, the Congress, believe in democracy and are confident that this democratic process will dethrone this anti-democratic and dictatorial Modi-BJP government from power," he claimed.

He said the party was going to have an alliance in Maharashtra. 

"Already, it has been agreed that the Congress will fight on 26 seats and the NCP will fight on 22 seats. Then, there are some alliance partners that will share seats with both the parties. Within one or two days, we will complete the talks," Venugopal said.

"Bihar also, West Bengal also, wherever our alliance is necessary, our Pradesh Congress Committee has an idea about the alliance. We will finish it within two-three days," he added. 

Venugopal also said the Congress is moving very fast regarding candidate selection process.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, who also addressed the press conference, said, "When opposition parties go into an alliance, sometimes it is post-poll and sometimes it is pre-poll. You should remain assured." 

"This nation's people have decided that the way this government has performed...people have been misled and there was misgovernance...so when it comes to alliance, the alliance will happen," he said.

The Congress also questioned why the dates for Jammu and Kashmir elections were not announced by the Election Commission.

Venugopal asked, "Why is the government running away from conducting elections in Jammu and Kashmir? It is a part of India and the entire country wants a democratic government in the state. This is the need of the hour." 

He said it is the duty of the Election Commission to "foresee the things that are happening on social media" and to conduct a free and fair elections.

The Election Commission announced the poll schedule for Lok Sabha elections that will be held in seven phases starting April 11 to May 19, and the results will be out on May 23.                 [Agencies]

New Delhi, Mar 10 :  Lok Sabha elections will begin on April 11 and polling would be held over seven phases through May 19, followed by counting of all votes on May 23, the Election Commission announced on Sunday.

Assembly polls in Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal, Odisha and Sikkim will also be held simultaneously, the Election Commission (EC) said. However, elections for the Jammu and Kashmir assembly, which was dissolved after the ruling coalition between the BJP and the PDP fell apart, will not be held along with the Lok Sabha polls.

Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora said the model code of conduct would come into immediate effect from Sunday and 10 lakhs polling stations would be set up this time as against about nine lakhs in 2014. Nearly 90 crore voters would be eligible to vote for 543 Lok Sabha constituencies across the country.

The election will pit the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance against several opposition parties, including the Congress, the Left and regional forces who are continuing to work out a grand alliance to minimise a division of votes against Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led ruling combine.

The BJP has succeeded in working out seat-sharing formula with some new allies and several old partners, by even making concessions to them in states like Bihar. However, opposition parties are yet to arrive at a deal in several states.

While the NDA hopes to make history by coming back to power for a second full term, the Opposition wants to unseat the Modi government by raising questions on its performance on a host of issues, including economic growth, employment, corruption and social harmony.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee had led the NDA to back to back Lok Sabha wins in 1998 and 1999 general elections but he was at the helm of only one full-term government. 

Announcing the schedule for 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the Election Commission said the voter verifiable paper audit trail' (VVPAT) will be used in all polling stations this time.

The first phase will be held on April 11, second on April 18, third on April 23 and fourth on April 29, fifth on May 6, sixth on May 12 and seventh phase on May 19.

Counting of votes for all seven phases covering 543 Lok Sabha constituencies would take place on May 23, Arora said.

In the first phase, 91 constituencies will to go for polls, 97 constituencies in the second phase, 115 constituencies in the third, 71 in fourth phase, 51 in fifth phase, 59 in sixth and 59 in the seventh phase.

With the model code of conduct for elections coming into immediate effect, the government cannot announce any policy move that may impact voters' decision.

Arora said all political advertisements on social media will need pre-certification.

In 2014, when the BJP swept to power, the Lok Sabha elections were held across nine phases beginning April 7 and ending May 9. The counting of votes had taken place on May 16.

The total contestants in fray were 8,251, with an average of 15 candidates in each constituency. However, deposit was forfeited in case of 7,000 contestants.

A total of over 55 crore voters (66.3 per cent) exercised their vote, while there were 9.27 lakh polling stations. There were nearly 60 lakh NOTA' votes.

Out of total 543 elected candidates, only 62 were women from 668 who had contested. 

After suffering losses in assembly polls in three states recently, the BJP believes that its Lok Sabha poll campaign is back on track due to a host of decisions, including 10 per cent quota for the general category poor, money transfer to farmers and presentation of a populist budget. 

What has injected further confidence into the NDA fold is the fronting of the nationalist plank in the poll campaign after the Pulwama terror attack, which killed 40 CRPF personnel, that was followed by the Indian Air Force' strikes on terrorist camps in Pakistan.

The BJP has been citing 2016 surgical strikes on terror launch pads and these air strikes to assert that only a government headed by Modi will be capable of taking on Pakistan over terrorism, as it has sought to corner the Congress on the issue.

Many political pundits feel the prime minister has already launched a full-fledged campaign accusing opposition parties of coming together for the sole purpose of removing him while he is working to "remove poverty, corruption and terrorism".

He had led the NDA to a sweeping victory in 2014 as it won 336 of 543 Lok Sabha seats, reducing the incumbent Congress to its lowest total of 44 seats. The BJP on its own won a majority, a first for the party, by bagging 282 seats.                [Agencies]

Lucknow, Jan 13 :  A day after it was virtually left out being part of an anti-BJP alliance formed by the Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party, the Congress on Sunday declared it will contest all the 80 Lok Sabha seats from the state on its own.

However, the grand old party of India has kept the doors of a possible alliance open saying if any secular party which is competent to fight the BJP and willing to go with it (Congress), then it will be accommodated.

Speaking to reporters here, party general secretary and UP in-charge Ghulam Nabi Azad said, "The Congress will contest on all the 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh, and defeat the BJP." 

Azad also expressed hope that the Congress will double its tally of seats, which it had secured in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections.

During the parliamentary elections, the Congress had bagged 21 seats in the politically crucial state.

To a question whether his party will not forge a coalition with any political party, Azad said, "If any political party is willing to accompany the Congress, and the Congress feels that it can fight the BJP, then it will be definitely accommodated." 

On Congress being left out of the SP-BSP alliance, the Congress general secretary said: "We wanted that Congress should have been a part of the grand alliance (against the BJP) in UP. But, if someone does not want to walk along, then nothing could be done." 

On the post-poll alliance with the SP and BSP, Azad said that at the national level, the Congress welcomes all the secular regional parties. 

Replying to another question on SP-BSP alliance, Azad said, "The Congress workers are not at all disappointed on being left out of the alliance. On the contrary, they are saying that the party would have had to contest on 25 Lok Sabha seats, but now they would be contesting on all the 80 Lok Sabha seats of the state." 

On possibilities of an alliance with the Rashtriya Lok Dal, Azad said that he would not like to peak to the media on this issue.                 PTI

New Delhi, Dec 11 : The Congress was leading in the BJP-ruled states of Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh and was locked in a close fight in Madhya Pradesh while the TRS forged ahead in Telangana and the MNF in Mizoram, trends indicated on Tuesday as votes for elections in the five states were counted

The Rahul Gandhi-led party became the focal point of attention as the morning progressed and trends showed it could possibly steal a march over rival BJP in the Hindi heartland states of Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh. In Madhya Pradesh, the picture changed minute to minute, in an electoral exercise being seen as a semi-final to 2019

"Trends show Congress marching ahead to victory in Rajasthan, MP and Chhattisgarh. We are confident the trend will continue across the country," Congress leader Sachin Pilot said in Jaipur

With election trends showing reverses for the BJP, senior BJP leader and Home Minister Rajnath Singh said the polls were fought on the basis of the performance of state governments, rejecting the notion that the results would be a reflection of the Modi government

Talking to reporters outside Parliament, he also offered his congratulations to all the winning parties and candidates

In the desert state of Rajasthan, t he Congress was leading in 97 seats, three short of the magic number of 100, and the BJP in 75, according to the website of the Rajasthan chief electoral officer. Independents were leading in 12 seats

Voters in the state, it appeared, stuck to the "revolving door" trend of choosing the BJP and the Congress alternately

Though Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje was ahead of the Congress' Manvendra Singh in her constituency Jhalrapatan, about 12 of her ministers, including Home Minister Gulab Chand Kataria and Transport Minister Yoonus Khan, were trailing, according to the state election commission's website

In Chhattisgarh, the Congress was poised to oust the BJP which was seeking a fourth straight term in office under the leadership of Chief Minister Raman Singh. According to the Election Commission, the Congress was ahead in 54 of the 90 seats, leaving the BJP trailing with 17 seats

The Janata Congress Chhattisgarh (J) of former chief minister Ajit Jogi was ahead in four seats

"The shocker if at all is Chhattisgarh," BJP leader Shaina NC said

Jogi said he was happy with the trends and people wanted to oust the Raman Singh government

Neighbouring Madhya Pradesh was a tantalising see-saw battle between the BJP, seeking a fourth term in power, and the Congress, desperate to stage a comeback in the central Indian state that was once its stronghold

The BJP was leading in 103 seats and the Congress in 112 in trends available for 224 of the 230 seats. The Bahujan Samaj Party was ahead in four seats, according to Election Commission figures

"We are going to get a full majority. There is no question about it," Congress leader Kamal Nath told reporters

In southern Telangana, trends indicated a clear landslide verdict for the Telangana Rashtra Samiti with leads in 90 seats. The Congress was way behind with leads in 16 seats, according to the Election Commission. The BJP was ahead in one and the TDP in two

Bikaner, Oct 3: BJP president Amit Shah and Congress chief Rahul Gandhi will be in Bikaner on October 4 and October 10 respectively where they will holding meetings ahead of the Assembly elections in Rajasthan.

Union Minister of State for Water Resources Arjun Ram Meghwal said Shah will address SC Sammelan and Shakti Kendra Sammelan in Bikaner Thursday and will also hold a meeting of party vistarak.

He will spend the night in Bikaner and leave Friday morning, Meghwal said. Party workers from Bikaner, Sriganganagar and Hanumangarh will attend the meetings.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi will also be in Bikaner on October 10.

"Gandhi will address a Sankalp rally in which nearly five lakh people are likely to participate from Bikaner, Sriganganagar, Churu and Hanumangarh," Leader of Opposition Rameshwar Dudi said. (PTI)

Bengaluru, Jun 13: Counting of votes have begun for Jayanagar Assembly constituency here, where election was held on June 11.
The Assembly elections were held across Karnataka on May 12, but poll in Jayanagar was countermanded following the death of BJP candidate B N Vijayakumar, who was holding the seat.
An estimated 55 per cent polling was recorded in the constituency on June 11.
BJP's B N Prahlad, brother of Vijayakumar, and senior Congress leader and former minister Ramalinga Reddy's daughter Sowmya Reddy were locked in a direct contest for the seat. In all, nineteen candidates were in the fray.
Ahead of polls, Janata Dal (S) had on June 5 pulled out its candidate from the contest and extended the party's support to its ruling coalition partner, the Congress.
Police have made elaborate security arrangement in and around the counting centre. (PTI)

 Bengaluru, May 15 :  The Bharatiya Janata Party is heading to recapture power by forming the government in Karnataka with a wafer thin margin as trends from 219 of the 222 constituencies by noon indicate that the Party was ahead in 115 with the ruling Congress way behind with a lead in 63 constituencies followed by the JD(S) in 39 and others in 2.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah who was losing massively in his home turf of Chamundeshwari by over 35,000 votes, was however leading by over 4000 votes in Badami. The Party leaders have huddled into a meeting at Mr Siddaramaiah's residence to discuss the next course of action, while celebrations were galore at the BJP camp
Most of the Ministers of the Siddaramaiah government were on the losing side showing a clear anti incumbency wave, though it was not visible during the campaign period. Some who would survive the onslaught included Ministers D K Shivakumar in Kanakapura, K J George who was leading comfortably in Sarvagna Nagar, Rposhan Baig in Shivajii Nagar and water resources Minister M B Patilin Bableshwar. Among the losers were Ramanath Rai in Udupi.
For BJP Chief Ministerial Candidate B S Yeddyurappa was comfortably leading in Shikaripura. Janata Dal (Secular) which is likely to maintain its 2013 position saw its president H D Kumaraswamy leading in both Channapatna and Ramanagara. It has maintained its traditional hold in southern Karnataka and had eaten into the Congress seats in Mysuru.UNI

Kolkata, May 15 : West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today without naming
the BJP congratulated the winners in Karnataka elections and said had the Congress cobbled
an alliance with the JD(S), the results would have been different.
Ms Banerjee, also the chairperson of ruling Trinamool Congress, in her twitter said, " Congratulations to the winners of the Karnataka elections. "

New Delhi, May 15 :  With the latest counting trends for the Karnataka assembly election showing BJP heading towards a victory in the state, there was jubilation outside the party headquarters here on Tuesday.
Hundreds of enthusiastic party workers burst fire crackers and distributed sweets amidst beating of drums, sensing victory in Karnataka after trends showed BJP far ahead of the Congress.
Meanwhile, Union Ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and Ravi Shankar Prasad celebrated at the party headquarters.
According to latest trends, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) appears to be heading for a simple majority on its own in Karnataka,.

Bengaluru, May 15 :  The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is appearing to heading for a simple majority on its own in Karnataka, according to latest trends.
The party was ahead in 102 assembly constituencies out of 195 for which trends were available from the Election Commission.
The ruling party Congress is far behind with only 53 seats followed by JD(S) 37 and its alliance partner BSP of Mayawati one and others two.
According to vote share break up, BJP has polled 38.3 per cent while the Congress has secured 37.5 per cent and JD(S) 17.2.
The trends indicated that the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was trailing in both Chamundeshwari and Badami.
In Chamundeshwari, JD(S) candidate G T Deve Gowda was leading by over 13,000 votes and in Badami, Mr Siddaramaiah was trailing by 420 votes.
The BJP chief ministerial candidate B S Yeddyurappa was cruising to a comfortable victory in Shikaripura over his Congress opponent G Malatesha by over 11,000 votes.

 Bengaluru, May 15 (UNI) A jubilant BJP on Tuesday termed the party's spectacular
win in Karnataka as "historic" and asserted that the people of Karnataka has rejected
the "toxic and negative politics of Congress".
"This is a historic victory ....and the victory of Narendra Modi-led campaign and people of Karnataka
irrespective of caste and creed reposing their faith in Prime Minister's programmes and policies,"
Union Minister and BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad told reporters.

Sharing similar sentiment, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said, "The people of Karnataka have
lauded the developmental plank of Prime Minister and decisively rejected the divisive,
toxic and negative politics of Congress party".
Mr Prasad said the BJP is indebted to the people of Karnataka as all sections of people have voted
in favour of developmental agenda of the Prime Minister.
"Prime Minister's intense campaign on the plank of development has yielded results," Ms Sitharaman said.UNI

Bengaluru, May 15 : The BJP on Tuesday welcomed the trends emerging as the counting of votes polled on May 12 with senior party leader Ram Madhav stating that the people of the State have opted for
a "decisive" mandate in favour of the saffron outfit.
"Trends indicate that d voters of Karnataka have opted for a decisive mandate. Hard work, strategy and mesmerism of Modi-Shah combine pulled off another victory for BJP," Mr Madhav tweeted.
The BJP central leadership has deputed Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar to rush to Bengaluru.
In Delhi, Mr Javadekar had a one-on-one meeting with BJP National President Amit Shah.
According to latest trends, the BJP was already leading in 114 seats out of 209 for which trends were available.
The Congress tally nosedived to 57 from 122 as of 2013 figures.
According to vote share break up, BJP has polled 37.5 per cent while the Congress has secured 37.4 per cent and JD(S) 18.1.
The trends indicated that the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was trailing in Chamundeshwari but appears to be comfortable in Badami.
In Chamundeshwari, JD(S) candidate G T Deve Gowda was leading by over 13,000 votes.UNI

Lucknow, Dec 1: BJP mayoral candidates are leading in 12 out of the 16 seats in Uttar Pradesh civic polls.
After two rounds of counting, the BJP mayoral candidates are leading in 12 while its nearest rival BSP are leading in three and Congress candidate in one.
However, the results of the ward members elections for the Nagar Palika and Nagar Panchayats have started pouring in with BJP again doing better than the rival political outfits.
Of the total 17 results announced for the ward members of Nagar Palika, BJP has won 4 while BSP won one seat. Rest 12 went to the Independents. In the Nagar panchayat wards, of the total 65 announced so far, BJP won in 12 seats, BSP in 3 and rest are Independents.
In the trends available for Mayors seats, BJP Mayoral candidate is leading by over 1,000 votes in Moradabad, BSP second, SP third and Congress fourth. In Gorakhpur, BJP Mayoral candidate Sitaram Jaiswal is leading by over 1,500 votes while in Bareilly, BJP Mayoral candidate Umesh Gautam is leading by 800 votes.
In Varanasi, BJP Mayoral candidate Mridula Jaiswal is leading by over 2,500 votes, while in Ferozabad, Payal Rathore of BJP is leading by over 4,700 votes. 
In Saharanpur too, BJP mayoral candidate Sanjeev Walia is leading by a slender margin of around 650 votes in the first round.
BJP mayoral candidates are also leading in Ayodhya and Lucknow. In Lucknow, BJP mayoral candidate Sanyukta Bhatia is leading by over 5,000 votes against SP candidate Meera Vardhan.
In Ayodhya, BJP mayor candidate Rishikesh Upadhaya is leading by around 700 votes. 
BSP Mayoral candidates are leading in Meerut, Moradabad and Jhansi, while Congress is leading in Mathura. UNI
