Gangtok, Apr 11 :  An estimated 69 per cent of the voters in Sikkim have exercised their franchise till 5 pm on Thursday to elect a 32-member state Legislative Assembly as well as the lone Lok Sabha member from the state, an official said.

The polling percentage will go up as large number of voters who have queued up at polling stations till 5 pm would be allowed to vote, the CEO said.

There was no report of any violence from anywhere in the state during the polling of the state Assembly and the lone Lok Sabha seat which was held simultaneously, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Ravindra Telang told.

Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling exercised his franchise at Namchi New Secondary School in South Sikkim's Namchi-Singhiyhang assembly seat.

A total of 4,32,306 voters comprising 2,20,305 males and 2,12,001 females were eligible to exercise their franchise on Thursday.

A total of 150 candidates are in fray for the 32 assembly seats, while 11 candidates are contesting for the lone Lok Sabha seat in the state.

Chamling, who is seeking an eighth successive term as an MLA, is contesting from two assembly seats - Poklok-Kamrang and Namchi-Singhithang.

Former Indian football captain Bhaichung Bhutia, the working president of the Hamro Sikkim party (HSP) has entered into fray from two assembly seats as well, including the Gangtok assembly constituency, reserved for the indigenous Bhutia-Lepcha communities.             [Agencies]

Gangtok, Sep 24: Sikkim's dream of having an airport will come true on Monday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate an aerodrome at Pakyong, around 33 km from here.

The foundation stone of the greenfield airport was laid in 2009.

Modi will also address a gathering at St. Xavier's School at Pakyong after inaugurating the airport, officials said.

The prime minister reached here on Sunday evening in an MI-8 chopper from Bagdogra and was received by Governor Ganga Prasad, Chief Minister Pawan Chamling and others at Libing Army Helipad.

He was given a gun salute by the Army there.

From the Army helipad, the prime minister's entourage travelled around 5 km to the Raj Bhawan where he stayed for the night. (PTI)

Gangtok, Sep 15: Continuous downpour on Friday triggered fresh landslides in North Sikkim, already battered by rains and widespread landslips since Sunday.

There was no information on loss of human lives due to the landslides, a district official said.

The fresh landslides were reported at Passingdong village in Dzongu.

The residents of the houses that are in danger have been shifted to safer locations, the official said, adding that incessant rain in North Sikkim since Sunday is triggering landslides in different areas at regular intervals.

Fifty houses, school buildings and roads were damaged in the landslides reported from Dzongu, Mangan, Lachen and Mangshilla in North district of the land-locked state since Sunday, the official said.

The district remains isolated from the rest of the country due to snapping of road connectivity, the official said.

The road between Mangan and Chungthang has been affected by many landslides and it is likely to take about a month to open the road for vehicular traffic, the official said.

The district administration has set up a control room and disaster help lines to help the people in distress.

State Forest minister and local MLA T W Lepcha and Deputy Speaker of Sikkim Assaembly Sonam Gyatso Lepcha on Saturday visited the affected areas in and around Mangan with the district collector, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) and other officials.

The team visited the Rafong Khola slide where a temporary log bridge has been built by the Forest Department.

The landslides at Rafong Khola are still active due to which there is a major problem in the movement of people.

The team visited the Lanthey Khola slide, where the road has been completely damaged by landslide.

The streams are flowing in full spate, bringing down boulders and causing landsldes, which has cut off the road network.

A meeting was held to review the situation in the district during which District Collector Karma R Bonpo briefed the team about the extent of damages reported from across North District.

He said teams headed by sub-divisional magistrates will be providing relief to the people.

The restoration of the road network is being carried out by the Border Roads Organisation, Road & Bridges Department and the PMGSY Department.

Electricity connection to Dzongu is being restored by the Energy and Power Department and the water supply to Mangan town is being restored by the PHE Department.

The Revenue Department is carrying out the assessment of the damages to various public properties in the district.

A team of armed police has been placed on a standby for search and rescue.

The landslides across the district have damaged about 50 houses, some of which have been damaged severely.

Many schools have been damaged due to which the administration has ordered the closure of these schools. (PTI)

Gangtok, Sep 15: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Sikkim on September 23 to inaugurate the state's first airport at Pakyong, a senior official has said.

After inaugurating the airport, the prime minister will address a public meeting at St. Xaviers School ground at Pakyong and return to New Delhi the same day, Chief Secretary A K Shrivastava said after chairing a high-level meeting.

The greenfield airport, located 30km from here, will put Sikkim on the aviation map of the country.

"I am very happy to share that the hon'ble prime minister is visiting Sikkim for the second time and this time he will be inaugurating the Pakyong Airport which is ready and has undergone trial on two occasions in the month of March, 2018," the chief secretary said.

The state government has been intimated by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) and the Union Civil Aviation Ministry about the prime minister's visit and the airport inauguration, he said.

After the formal inauguration of the airport on September 23, the commercial operation of flights will commence from the airport in the first week of October, the chief secretary said. (PTI)
