Agartala, Jan 11: Tripura Governor Tathagata Roy yesterday met with union home minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi and submitted a detailed report on law and order situation of the state and disobeying him by Chief Secretary and Director General of Police with the instruction of Chief Minister Manik Sarkar.
According to report, Governor Mr Roy in his report mentioned that no senior government official met with him despite summoned by the Raj Bhawan, which indicated a constitutional crisis in the state. The administration has not been functioning neutrally and according to rule of law rather working in favour of the ruling party.
The Raj Bhawan sources however, pointed out that in recent time the government became arrogant and critical towards the Governor most unusually. The CPI(M) party leaders have been branding him as RSS man and openly criticizing him whenever he comments on the state affairs that made the Governor unhappy.
The Governor was disappointed over the role to left front government in Tripura in investigation of the murder of two journalists Shantanu Bhowmik and Sudip Datta Bhowmik in Sept 20 and Nov 21 last year. Despite demand for CBI enquiry into the killings of the journalists, Tripura government constituted two separate SITs for investigation, which is believed to be a move to save the actual conspirators behind the murders.
In past few months, more than six political murders, at least seven women and girls were killed after rape, more than 30 political violence and attacks besides, killing of two journalists had been registered in Tripura but none of the case police could make any headway so far. The law and order situation of the state has been steadily deteriorated but the role of the state government could not make Governor happy, sources stated. The Governor on Dec 30 last had summoned Chief Secretary Sanjeev Ranjan and Director General of Police Akhil Kumar Sukla in the Raj Bhawan to talk about law and order issues. But both the senior officers ignored him citing the excuses that Chief minister not permitted them to go to Raj Bhawan.
Raj Bhawan questioned them why they sought permission from the Chief Minister Manik Sarkar when had of the state called them to meet but they could not able to satisfy the Governor.
Justifying the stand of the officials’ later CPI(M) spokesperson and central committee member Goutam Das told media that Governor cannot summon any officers. But the Chief Minister did not clarify his stand on the issue and reaction over the controversy. UNI

Agartala, Jan 11: Indigenous Peoples’ Front of Tripura (IPFT) president N C Debbarma today threatened to register a criminal case against Chief Minister Manik Sarkar for his statement tagging IPFT as an over ground associate of outlawed militant organisation National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT).
He alleged that Manik Sarkar on Dec 31 at the kick off election rally of left front at Vivekananda Stadium openly accused IPFT of frontal organisation of NLFT without any basis. Earlier, in several occasions Sarkar and many of his party leaders accused IPFT and it’s workers as NLFT activists but could not able to provide any proof.
“It seems that Sarkar and his party wanted to create a communal divide in Tripura branding a recognised political party as militant outfit. The CPI(M) has understood their electoral fate in this election and now desperately instigating to a communal riot but we shall prevent such dividing attempt at any cost to retain communal harmony,” Debbarma said.
He pointed out that IPFT has been demanding a separate tribal state curving out ADC as per constitutional norm and said, “Any political party might have some reservation or disagreement to the demand but it doesn’t mean that they would label unconstitutional allegation against a responsible political party.”
“We had a detail discussion over the allegation made by the Chief Minister in the rally and decided to pursue legal battle against him to prove his statement. Being the executive head of the state, we feel it is his greatest failure to take action against us if he is confirmed our link with NLFT. He has to prove it in the court of law,” Debbarma mentioned.
He said earlier, CPI(M) state secretary Bijan Dhar had also accused that NLFT in it’s statement sometime back made it clear that in the election they would extend support to IPFT against left front. Their allegation was not substantiated by any proof or any intelligent organisation but IPFT was kept mum that time.
“We were silent not for their allegation or out fear, we have been waiting for the government action over the statement but found Chief Minister started raising same allegation. Over the Sarkar’s speech NLFT in a statement on Monday made it clear they neither support any political party nor subscribe such ideas. They requested the parties to refrain from such wild statement. But in past two days Sarkar or his party did not make any reaction, which proved they are guilty,” Debbarma said.
Earlier, in 2003 assembly election they made similar allegation against INPT chief BIjoy Kumar Hrangkhawal for his speech on self determination in Geneva. They won the election by playing the ethnic card against tribal leader and later they said “it was mere political”. The party will seek judicial action against Manik Sarkar and his party leaders soon. UNI

Agartala, Nov 15: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar admitted that the left front government of the state did not response to the appeal of former supremo of banned outfit All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) Ranjit Debbarma who wanted to join mainstream along with his wife and daughter.
Making statement on the reference made by BJP MLA Sudip Roybarman in the assembly on the arrest of Ranjit last week for his alleged anti-national speech yesterday, Sarkar said he had written letter to the Chief Minister on May 16, 2016 expressing his desire to join in normal life.
Later, July 5, 2017 Ranjit had written a similar letter of Director General of Tripura Police but none of them replied to his appeal and finally on Oct 3, 2017 he made the same appeal to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh. While opposition member of Congress Ratan Lal Nath accused left front government of adopting dual stand in regard to bring back outlawed militants in normal life, Chief Minister Manik Sarkar stated, “I had got the letter not only from Ranjit Debbarma also from present chief of NLFT who wanted to come back in normal life but we could not do anything as central government is authorised to take the necessary steps.” He however, informed that the state government had taken up the matter to the notice of Union Home Ministry seeking appropriate action from it’s end and added, “We also want all the extremists should come back in normal life.” However, Nath alleged that non-response to Ranjit Debbarma’s appeal twice had clearly indicated the intension of the left front government. “The CPI(M) had indulged him into insurgency before 1993 assembly elections and leftist came in power with the help of ATTF militants in that elections. Now when Ranjit wanted to join in normal life, CPI-M party disagreeing to it, as they wish to re-start armed militancy when leftists will not be in power,” Nath added. Sarkar countered the allegations and said Ranjit Debbarma was arrested last week for an anti-national speech at Duski bazaar in Teliamura of Khowai in rally had organized under the banner of Tripura United Peoples’ Council (TUPC), a reorganization body of all former ATTF insurgents. “Ranjit delivered a speech to the gathering where he tried to instigate people against Tripura’s merger with India under Regent Maharani Kanchanprabha Devi in Oct 1949, Sarkar said adding that he was charged with Section 124 (a), 153 (a), 53 (b), 120 (b) of IPC, Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, and Section 82 of Tripura Police Act. He was apprehended to hold potential to create hatred among tribal and non tribal communities. The state government got intelligence inputs that the NLFT would support Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT) if the latter contested the next Assembly elections due in February next year. Arrested by Bangladesh Police in 2012 as he was allegedly involved in a number of massacres, he was handed over to Indian authorities in January 2013. He was subsequently brought to Tripura and arrested. He got bail from a Tripura court in 2015. UNI

Agartala, Aug 17 :  The war of words between Prasar Bharati and Information department of Tripura over non-airing Chief Minister Manik Sarkar’s customary speech on the occasion of 71st Independence Day continues when leftists launched state wide protest against it. In a late night release, state information directorate charged Prasar Bharati for misleading the people to cover up their misdeed by not airing the recorded speech of Mr Sarkar in Doordarshan and Akashvani as well. “Prasar Bharati is now being trying to mislead the people about their undemocratic and authoritarian stand,” the release said reiterating that like previous years both Akashvani and Doordarshan on Aug 12 recorded Chief Minister’s address, which was supposed to be broadcast on Aug 14 evening but not aired. Prior to the state government release, head of office of Prasar Bharati Agartala, U K Sahoo denied the allegation of non-airing Chief Minister’s speech on Independence Day and said Mr Sarkar’s speech was aired on Doordarshan for 12 minutes in 29.45 minutes bulletin on Aug 15 last and the same was repeated on the next day. “Not only was the Chief Minister, Independence Day program of various districts of the state given wide publicity in the Regional Bulletin. The allegation of blocking out Tripura Chief Minister on I-Day is incorrect,” Mr Sahoo stated while refuting the allegations against Prasar Bharati. Countering the argument of Mr Sahoo, Tripura government sought clarification over the recorded speech of Manik Sarkar for which Prasar Bharati in writing requested him to ‘reshape’ the speech at the eleventh hour otherwise, it would not air and Chief Minister refused to do it on Aug 14 last. However, Prasar Bharati officials argued that public broadcaster has to follow certain code and norms for any program and in case of Manik Sarkar’s speech on Independence Day it was not followed properly and it was the discretion of the authority to decide the program and content. “Even then Chief Minister was requested to ‘reshape’ his speech avoiding certain controversial text, which was not at all fit for airing on Independence Day but he did not do it. This is the reason Doordarshan and Akashvani could not air it. But it doesn’t mean CM was blocked out. His public speech was covered widely,” the officials argued. Meanwhile, CPI(M) Politburo and Tripura State committee demanded a probe into the unusual incident of blocking Chief Minster’s customary speech by Prasar Bharati. The CPI(M) smells political conspiracy for not airing the speech, as it had exposed the misdeed of Modi government and RSS activities in ruining India’s tradition. The party has organised protest across the state up to village level against Prasar Bharati and BJP led government at the Centre. The party leaders while addressing gathering vehemently criticised the Prime Minister and alleged that RSS attempted to break the communal fabric of the country to making India for a particular religion. However, Chief Minister Manik Sarkar has also termed the role of Prasar Bharati as “undemocratic, autocratic and intolerant step of the central government” who has been flouting federal structure of India in political consideration and disrespect to constitution. Reiterating his party stand Mr Sarkar said, “A conspiracy is hatched to create a division by trying to transform India into a state believing in a particular religion and spreading message of Gau Raksha. The minority and Dalit communities are being attacked and denied security and the Centre's anti-people policy was affecting peace and tranquility." UNI

New Delhi, Aug 16 :  The CPI-M, condemning the “censorship” of Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar’s Independence Day speech broadcast, today said this was not only reminiscent of the Emergency days but had gone beyond it. Addressing a press conference here, party General Secretary Sitaram Yechury said, “This is censorship of media by the government and gross interference on the rights of the states which is non-permissible”. Mr Yechury said this was a brazen attack on the federal equation between the Centre and states and the Prime Minster and his allies cannot order state Chief Ministers on speaking to the citizens. He said Doordarshan and the All India Radio had recorded Mr Sarkar’s speech but they subsequently informed him that the speech could not be carried as it was and asked him to “reshape” it. Mr Yechury also appealed to all Chief Ministers of non-BJP ruled states to join together to resist such a move. “This is happening for the first time and it is not in the interest of India, people and the Constitution,” Mr Yechury said. Targeting the RSS, the senior Left leader said on Vijayadasami last year, the speech of RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat was shown on Doordarshan despite the fact that he holds no public office and also not a representative of the people. “The RSS Chief's annual address merits a live telecast but a CM of 19 years experience has to be blacked out." He also questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s demonetization reference in his speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort. “The CPM wants to know how much black money had come to the banks,” he said. According to reports, Doordarshan and Akashvani separately recorded a six-minute speech of Mr Sarkar on August 12, which was scheduled to be broadcast and telecast on August 14 evening. At the eleventh hour both the institutions sent advisory to the Chief Minister to reshape his speech otherwise, it will not be aired but Mr Sarkar refused. UNI
