JAMMU, MARCH 20: First Lady Mrs. Usha Vohra, President of ASHI, chaired the Annual General Body Meeting of Association for Social Health in India (ASHI), J&K Branch, at the Raj Bhavan here today.
The General Body held extensive discussions to identify new projects and activities which shall be undertaken by ASHI during 2018-19.
 Mrs. Vohra presented certificates and multi utility kits to the girls who have completed their basic computer course with the help of ASHI.
During the course of discussions members of ASHI apprised Mrs. Vohra about the various welfare activities being carried out for women empowerment, vocational education and providing help to the disadvantaged sections of society. The meeting was informed about ASHI’s ongoing welfare programmes in the recently adopted panchayats of Chibba, Nadore and Marh.
Mrs Vohra lauded the devotion and hardwork with which members of ASHI are striving for ameliorating the lot of disadvantaged sections of the society. She urged to focus sharply on the empowerment of women and girl children by providing them opportunities for skill development.
On behalf of the Governor, Mrs. Vohra presented a cheque of Rs.15.85 lakh as financial assistance for the continuing programmes of social uplift which are being carried out by ASHI.
Ms. Sushma Choudhary, Vice-President ASHI; Prof. Kailash Rajput, Secretary; Mrs. Seema Khajooria Shekhar, Additional Secretary, Mrs. Nasreen Khan, Joint Secretary, and Prof. Ved Ghai were among the members of ASHI who were present in the meeting. In all 48 persons attended today’s meeting.

JAMMU, MARCH 14: Governor N.N. Vohra and First Lady Mrs. Usha Vohra hosted about 270 boys and girls and men and women from Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Manipur, Nagaland, Tripura and Mizoram who are on an exchange visit to Jammu and Kashmir under the North East Youth Exchange Programme organized by the Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan, Jammu & Kashmir, at the Raj Bhavan here today.
Governor and First Lady lauded the beautiful folk dances presented by the participants. Governor suggested that the Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangthan could prepare documentaries of such cultural programmes and circulate them for viewing by school and college students in different states.
Highlighting the importance of Youth Exchange Programmes, Governor observed that they are extremely valuable for promoting understanding among people belonging to different areas of our vast country who speak different languages, follow different religions and are from diverse cultural backgrounds. He observed that such exchanges enable the youth to visit other States and get acquainted with people of different cultures and backgrounds.
Governor observed that awareness amongst the youth from various parts of India about the diversity which obtains in our country would also contribute towards bringing all our people closer together.
Governor, who is Chairman of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, invited the participating youth to visit the Holy Shrine of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi and directed the concerned officials to make all arrangements for their visit and to treat them as guests of the Board.
Governor complimented the role of Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan in organizing the Exchange Programme and hoped that sustained efforts in this shall continue to be made to significantly enlarge this programme.
The Welcome Address was presented by Shri Sukhdev Singh, State Director, Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangthan and a Vote of Thanks was given by Shri S.S. Kashyap, Deputy Director Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan, J&K.

JAMMU, MARCH 03: A cultural programme hosted by Mrs. Usha Vohra, First Lady, on the occasion of Women’s Day was held in the lawns of Raj Bhavan today. It was attended by women Legislators, officers and wives of Civil, Police, Judicial and Military officers.
The attractive programme, organized by Radio Kashmir- Jammu and Doordarshan Kendra, included enthralling musical performances presented by singers from within and outside the State. The performances included folk songs in Dogri; Urdu and Kashmiri Ghazals; semi Classical and Sufi songs.
 The programme was designed by Ms. Anjali Sharma, Director Radio Kashmir-Jammu and anchored by Ms. Madhavi Sharma, Senior Announcer Radio Kashmir-Jammu.
The performing artists included Ms. Anuradha Kuber, Ustad Sakhawat Hussain Khan, Ms. Zulekha Fareed, Sh. Dhananjay Koul, Sh. Samual Masih, Ms. Kusha Sharma, Ms. Chinmai Sharma, Ms. Sonali Dogra and Ms. Asha Keser.

-Lauds role of NCC-

JAMMU, DECEMBER 26:  The J&K NCC Directorate Republic Day Contingent, comprising 109 NCC Cadets from all the three regions of Jammu and Kashmir, met  GovernorN.N. Vohra and Mrs. Usha Vohra, the First Lady, at Rajbhavan here today. The NCC Contingent was led by Major General Nilendra Kumar, Additional Director General, National Cadet Corps, Jammu and Kashmir Directorate.
 The Cadets presented a colourful cultural programme which is planned to be a part of the presentations which this Contingent shall make at the National Republic Day Camp at New Delhi in January, 2018. Governor complimented Maj. Gen. Kumar and his officers on the high quality of the cultural items presented by the Cadets and wished the Contingent high success in the various competitions in which it would be participating at the forthcoming Republic Day Camp.
 Governor observed that the maximum number of youth should be enabled to join the NCC as this would promote their capacity for living and working together and enriching their personalities with a clear vision of their role in carrying the country forward.
          Governor expressed happiness that the size of this year’s Contingent is considerably larger than in the previous years and urged the J&K NCC Directorate to be proactive in securing a meaningful share in the projected all India expansion of NCC activities, keeping in view J&K’s diverse and difficult geography. He lauded Maj. Genl. Kumar on the performance report of J&K’s NCC cadets at various national level events and selection of a sizeable number of cadets to the Armed Forces Training Academies.
                   Wishing the NCC Contingent high success in their various competitions at the Republic Day Camp, the Governor said that he hoped that this group of cadets from all the three regions of Jammu and Kashmir would bring laurels for the State.

           On the occasion, Major General Kumar, presented the Welcome Address and highlighted the achievements of the cadets during the year 2017.

JAMMU, DECEMBER 26: First Lady Mrs. Usha Vohra participated in the Mahila Yog Shakti Divas which was organized by the Bhartiya Yog Sansthan Ashram.
 Emphasising the importance of yoga, First Lady observed that its practice evolves an individual physically, mentally and spiritually and energizes the entire metabolism.  She added that people world over are incorporating yoga practices in their daily lives and its popularity can be gauged from the fact that since 2015, International Yoga Day is being celebrated on 21st June in many parts of the world.
 Mrs. Vohra thanked Bhartiya Yog Sansthan for her participation in the Mahila Yog Shakti Divas and hoped that the very large number of women who participated in this programme would benefit from what they had learnt about maintaining sound health by practicing Yoga.
Sh. Des Raj, General Secretary, All India Bhartiya Yog Sansthan, gave a very informative lecture on varied issues relating to women’s health and  the precautions they should take for leading healthy lives.
 Sh. Sat Pal Sharma, President Bhartiya Yog Sansthan, J&K, gave a Vote  of Thanks.

Offers to support the Girl Child Initiative


JAMMU, DECEMBER 23: A delegation of Association for Social Health (ASHI) led by its Sr. Vice President Ms. Sushma Choudhary, met Governor N.N. Vohra and First Lady Usha Vohra, at the Raj Bhavan here today.
 Ms. Sushma Choudhary apprised Governor and First Lady about the various welfare activities being carried out by the members of the ASHI for promoting women empowerment, vocational education and helping the disadvantaged sections of society. The delegation also informed about the fiscal difficulties being faced by the Association.
 Governor and First Lady lauded the devoted selfless endeavourss of ASHI members for bettering the lot of women and girls, particularly those who had been derelicted. Governor requested Ms. Choudhary and all her colleagues to spare time for providing counseling to the near 100 girls, children of Baaridar families and of employees of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, who were adopted during the one year celebration of the Silver Jubilee of the establishment of the Shrine Board. He observed that while an amount of rupees one lakh had been deposited in the name of each girl child, encashable after she is 18 years old, it is essentially to watch the physical development and early education of all these girls. And for this purpose reliable help is required. Ms. Choudhary and her colleagues agreed to provide the required support.

 The delegation comprised Prof.Ved Kumari Ghai, Prof. Kailash Rajput, Mrs. Seema Khajuria Shekhar, Prof. Hemla Aggarwal, Prof. Rita Jitendra, Mrs. Nasreen Khan, and Mrs. Sham Kishori Koul.

JAMMU, DECEMBER 11: Governor N.N. Vohra and First Lady Mrs. Usha Vohra, participated in the 52nd Raising Day celebrations of the Border Security Force at the Headquarters of Jammu Frontier BSF.
Governor congratulated Sh. Ram Awtar, Inspector General of the Jammu Frontier, and all his officers and men, and their families, for their devotion and continuing sacrifices to safeguard the territorial integrity of the country, repelling infiltration across the International Border, carrying out counter terrorist operations and promoting a sense of security among the people living in the border areas.

Dr. Nirmal Kumar Singh, Deputy Chief Minister, J&K, senior serving and retired BSF officers were among those present on the occasion.

Highlighting the importance of Tribal Youth Exchange Programmes, Governor observed that they are extremely valuable for promoting understandings among people belonging to different areas of our vast country who speak different languages, follow different religions and are from diverse cultural backgrounds. He observed that such exchanges enable the youth from tribal communities to visit other States and get acquainted with people of different background.

He advised that such programmes need to be organized on a much larger scale, throughout the year.

They presented cash prizes to the winners of the Declamation Contest and cultural programmes which had been organized by the NYKS as part of this Exchange Programme. Observing that the cash prizes for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd teams who won in the cultural competition were only Rs. 5000, Rs. 3000 and Rs. 2000, respectively, the Governor announced that these prizes shall be Rs. 20,000, Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 10,000, respectively.

JAMMU, NOVEMBER 23: Mrs. Usha Vohra, First Lady, participated in the Annual Day celebrations of the Lawrence Public School which was organized at the Abhinav Theatre, here today.
 A very scintillating and educative cultural programme was presented by the students of the School which included an Opera, “Incredible India-Atulya Bharat”, comprising trips to various states of India and showcasing their culture and dance forms.
Mrs. Vohra thanked the School management for inviting her on this joyous occasion of their Annual Day celebrations to witness full of life performances of children. She noted that these presentations symbolized the rich diversity of India in a very telling manner. She wished the children of the School a bright future ahead.

JAMMU, NOVEMBER 14: Mrs. Usha Vohra, First Lady of the State, participated in the Children’s Day Celebration programme organized by the Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam Welfare Society (VKWS), at the V.K. Sarvodya Middle School, Rajeev Nagar, here today.
Students of the schools which are being run by the VKWS presented a very impressive cultural programme which included recitation of poems, storytelling, songs and dance items.
Mrs. Vohra was particularly enthralled with the cultural presentations, especially the rendition of poems and stories which were composed by the students themselves. She complimented the VKWS for providing sound education to children belonging to the disadvantaged sections of the society and lauded the efforts of the teachers of the Society in moulding the growth of the youth to imbue them with confident, positive and happy personalities.
 Mrs. Vohra expressed appreciation of the Society’s endeavours to progressively enlarge its outreach activities and, on behalf of the Governor, assured financial support for their upcoming project which aims to promote education among girls from the remote areas of the State.
Mrs. Vohra released “Surging Steps”, the souvenir of the VKWS, which contains creative writings of the young children and also presented scholarships to the meritorious girl students who have been adopted by the VKWS.
Mrs. Ved Kumari Ghai, President of the VKWS, presented the Welcome Address, while Mrs. Chandra Gupta, Secretary VKSW, presented a formal Vote of Thanks.

SRINAGAR, OCTOBER 3: Governor N.N. Vohra and the First Lady Mrs. Usha Vohra, inaugurated the Satya Devi Resources Centre for Visually Impaired at Delhi Public School, Srinagar. Sh. Vijay Dhar, Chairman of the School, Smt. Kiran Dhar and a number of eminent citizens of the town were present on the occasion.
Ms. Qurat-ul-Ain, Incharge of the Satya Devi Centre, who herself is visually impaired, gave an impressive presentation about the objectives and activities of the Centre. Governor and First Lady visited the School’s Special Education Needs Centre where they interacted with the Faculty and the students at various levels and with different impairments, and learnt about the therapeutic activities which they were undertaking to be able to better manage their impairments and also gain skills. Governor and First Lady also visited the Atal Innovation Laboratory where students apprised them about the varied innovations which they had been able to carry out.
Addressing the students and the Faculty of the DPS, Governor particularly complimented the management for running the Satya Devi Resources Centre which is carrying out valuable education and capacity building of the specially abled persons. He complimented the Centre’s incharge, Ms. Qurat-ul-Ain for her confidence and her ability to manage the varied activities being carried out here while also pursuing her own higher studies and her interest in Music and Fine Arts. To reflect his appreciation Governor announced financial support of rupees 2 lakh for the strengthening of the Satya Devi Resources Centre and hoped that it will enlarge its admission.
Recalling the counter-terrorist operation which took place in this school few months back, when the terrorist took refuge in the Administrative Block, Governor urged the students to develop the grit to face a world full of problems. Governor observed that today there are few areas in the world which are not facing one or the other unrest. And India is a large country which has its own problems, but we should join hands and ensure that inimical factors, internal and external, are not allowed to damage our socio-religious traditions and communal harmony.
Governor emphasized on the teachers and students that under no circumstances we should let problems take toll of our education schedules. He noted that students of J&K, particularly girls, are extremely bright and highly talented and it is our responsibility to provide our children a stimulating environment which provides them advantage and a positive edge in this age of high competition. He added that a well- aware society is capable of establishing institutions which are efficient and welfare oriented.
Governor congratulated the students and the teachers of the School for their outstanding achievements in all fields- academics, sports and extra-mural activities.
On the occasion students presented the school prayer and a very impressive instrumental music programme.
Governor and First Lady met sports achievers of the school: Ms. Sairah Zahoor and Ms. Shaifa Tak- both won Gold Medals in National Thang Tha Championship which was held at Hyderabad this year; Ms. Afreen Hyder who won Bronze Medal in the 1st Women International Taekwondo Championship held in Nepal this year and  Mr. Yousuf Gul for his achievements in various national and international Skiing competitions.

Mr. Abdul Manan, Head Boy of the School presented the Welcome Address while Ms. Sundus Sazili presented the Vote of Thanks on the occasion.
