Act an iconic tool of transparency, accountability: ADC Bla
          BARAMULLA, OCTOBER 05: With an aim to sensitize the Public Information Officers (PIOs) and Assistant Public Information Officers (APIOs) about the effective and positive use of Jammu and Kashmir Right to Information Act, 2009 (RTI Act), a day-long awareness cum training workshop was today organized here at Dak Bungalow with Additional Deputy Commissioner Baramulla Farooq Ahmad Baba as the chief guest.
          The workshop was organized by J&K RTI Foundation which marked the participation of concerned PIOs, APIOs and various other concerned.
          On the occasion, a special Power Point presentation was given by the Foundation's chairman Irfan Ali Banda wherein he presented a detailed account of the relevant provisions of the act. He stressed for effective and positive use of RTI Act and said that the act is a vital tool in strengthening democracy at grassroot level. Moreover, he said that the main objective of holding the workshop is to sensitize Public Information Officers (PIOs) to provide required information to the people under section 4 of the Act. He urged upon all the stakeholders to make the RTI Act as stronger as possible so that no one could be the victim of misinformation.
          Describing RTI act as a tool of accountability and transparency, the ADC complimented the Foundation for organizing the workshop in district Baramulla adding that such an initiative proves beneficial in strengthening governance mechanism. He further said that seeking information from the government is the right of the information seeker while as it is the responsibility of an officer to give him information in a time-bound manner. He also said that Officers ought to provide information voluntarily to the public so that people do not feel the need to seek information through RTI act.
          A question-answer session was also held during which queries raised by different stakeholders were cleared by the speakers besides evoking feedbacks and suggestions in strengthening the legislation.

New York, Jul 25: Four persons of India-origin, including three women, have been named by Fortune among 40 of the most influential and inspiring young people in business under the age of 40.

Instagram Cofounder and CEO Kevin Systrom and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, both 34, are tied for first place on the Fortune '40 Under 40' list.

Chief Finance Officer of the US' largest automaker, General Motors Dhivya Suryadevara comes in at the 4th spot, followed by Vimeo CEO Anjali Sud (14), Cofounder and Co-CEO of Robinhood Baiju Bhatt (24) and Female Founders Fund founding partner Anu Duggal (32).

For the first time ever, Fortune also assembled a supplementary honour roll of the most impressive, young superstars who are transforming business at the leading edge of finance and technology.

list shines a light on the pioneers building some of the world's fastest-growing businesses.

This list includes Senior Vice President of Product at real-time currency exchange and remittance network Ripple, 39-year old Asheesh Birla, digital currency wallet and platform Coinbase's Chief technology officer Balaji Srinivasan, Director of MIT Digital Currency Initiative Neha Narula and Coinbase's Vice President of operations Tina Bhatnagar.

Fortune said Suryadevara, 39 made history when it was announced she would become GM's first female CFO later this year, making the auto giant one of only two Fortune 500 companies led by a female CEO and CFO (the other is chocolate giant Hershey).

Sud, 34 joined video-sharing website Vimeo as head of marketing in 2014 and was last year named CEO, charged with focusing Vimeo as a cloud-based platform for video creation, distribution, and monetization, targeting individuals and small- to medium-size businesses.

Bhatt, 33 cofounded financial services company Robinhood with Vlad Tenev in 2013 as an egalitarian challenge to oldguard brokerage houses. Five years later, it has shot to a valuation of $5.6 billion. This year the company added Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies to the trading mix and now hope to build Robinhood into a full-blown digital bank, Fortune said.

Duggal, 39, launched Female Founders Fund in 2014 as a seed-stage venture fund to invest in female-led technology companies. She had initially raised five million dollars and by May of this year, she closed $27 million for her second early-stage fund, with a roster of limited partners including philanthropist Melinda Gates, Fortune said. (PTI)

New Delhi, Jan 10: Lauding the people of Indian origin for climbing to appreciable heights in the countries of their residence and having contributed to the well-being of that country and of society, President Ram Nath Kovind on Wednesday said the Indian diaspora have embellished identity of India and its people all over the world.
Speaking after inaugurating the International Conference of PIO Parliamentarians, being organised by Antar Rashtriya Sahayog Parishad - Bharat in association with the PIO Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Ministry of External Affairs, the President said, 'The Indian diaspora has climbed to appreciable heights in almost all the countries where it has found a home. It has contributed to the well-being of that country and of that society – enriching the economy and adding to intellectual wealth and local culture. Members of the Indian diaspora work hard on farms in countries as far apart as Italy, Bolivia and Tanzania." 
He added: "They are instrumental to the tech start-up ecosystem of Silicon Valley. They form the backbone of the economy of Dubai and other major business cities in the Gulf region. The global financial centres of New York, London and Singapore would simply not be the same without the Indian diaspora. And as I discovered during my first state visit after being elected as the President of India, Pravasi Bharatiya teachers have helped educate several generations in Ethiopia.
"As a country, we are very proud of what our Pravasi Bharatiya brothers and sisters have done. They have embellished the identity of India and of the Indian people all over the world.'
The President said the Indian diaspora have remained true to Indian culture and retained a strong and commendable bond with their roots, even when living thousands of miles away.
'If Indian cuisine and Indian films have a global market today, it is because the diaspora has taken them to distant lands,' he said.
The President said for the Government of India, engagement with PIO parliamentarians – or indeed with the wider Indian diaspora community – was not a transactional relationship or a zero-sum game. 
'Rather, we look upon the community and look upon PIO parliamentarians and elected and public representatives as a living bridge. They have a role in enhancing understanding between their countries and the country of their parents and ancestors. And in helping build economic, people-to-people and strategic connections that will be of benefit to both countries and to all of us,' the President said. Mr Kovind added that as PIO parliamentarians, as those in public life in their systems who have the best understanding of India, it is important for them to link their individual country’s priorities to India’s development. New Delhi, Jan 9: The government was speaking far from truth, the Congress charged 
on Friday while reacting to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement that Foreign direct investment (FDI) was increasing in India. 
Addressing the first PIO Parliamentarians Conference here, Mr Modi said over half the total investment into the country has come in the last three years. A record 16 billion dollars of FDI came into the country last year, Mr Modi said.
Addressing a press conference at Congress headquarters, Senior leader Raj Babbar alleged that the FDI in 2017 has been minimum in past 13 years.
During the UPA regime in 2014, fresh investment was 16.2 trillion dollars while in 2017 it was reduced to 7.2 trillion dollars, he said.
Growth in manufacturing sector has also reduced, Mr Babbar said.
He said unemployment in the country has increased to such an extent that there were 1.5 crore unemployed, according to newspapers and while his party president Rahul Gandhi was more bothered about the increasing unemployment and the health facilities in the country, the Prime Minister was always in election mode.
Mr Babbar said there was slowdown in India's real estate and manufacturing sector. 
'Now, nothing was working,' he said in a reply to the PM's sarcastic statement made 'sab chalta hai' in UPA regime.
On Congress chief Rahul Gandhi's visit to Bahrain, where he addressed delegates of 50 countries and is the chief guest, whether he was aping the Prime Minister on visits abroad, Mr Babbar said the Congress president was trying to unify people.
On the Supreme Court saying that playing of national anthem in cinema halls will henceforth be optional, a day after the Centre informed the top court that it was in favour of modification of the November 2016 order, a complete turnabout from its previous stand on the issue, the Congress leader said it was diversionary tactic of the government but they respect the court judgement.
On Unified education system in Uttar Pradesh, the Congress UP incharge said where people are dying of hunger and farmers throwing potatoes on streets in protest, the government is trying to divert attention.
About Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje opposing release of film 'Padmavat' in Rajasthan, Mr Babbar said if the Union Information ministry has given its approval, 'is the Chief Minister opposing the Centre' by stopping the release of the film. UNI

New Delhi, Jan 9: Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday declared India does not eye anyone’s territory nor it has intentions to exploit resources of any other nation.
Mr Modi asserted that India’s focus has always been capacity building and resource development be it on bilateral or multilateral platforms like Commonwealth, India-Africa Summit or Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation. "On each of these forums, we have made efforts to take every one along,’’ he said.
Addressing the First PIO Parliamentarian Conference here, the Prime Minister said India’s development aid model was not based on "give and take’’ but on the needs and priorities of the recipient nations.
He said that India has always played a positive and constructive role on the global arena. "We have not seen our relations with any country on the scale of profit and loss but viewed them through the prism of humanitarian values,’’ he said amid applause from 134 PIO lawmakers and mayors from 24 countries. 
"Our strong relations with ASEAN countries have been further strengthened and these will be showcased to the entire world in a few days from now on the occasion of India’s Republic Day,’’ he said. As many as 10 leaders from ASEAN countries will be guests of honour on January 26 Republic Day celebrations in the Capital.
Mr Modi said that 21st Century is being described as Asian Century and India has definitely played an important role in it. 
"You will feel this influence of India’s growing stature across the world. India’s growing economy and power will certainly make you proud and it will inspire us to work even harder,’’ he said. 
The Prime Minister said the world is facing many challenges which can be met by the ideology of non-violence and peaceful protest as enunciated by Gandhiji. "Extremism and radicalisation can be countered only through the ideology of Mahatma Gandhi,’’ he said. 
Terming members of Indian diaspora as partners in development and progress of India, Mr Modi said the government wants to establish lasting ties with PIOs. In his 45-minute inaugural address, Mr Modi dwelt at length on India moving up by 42 places in the ranking of ease of doing business in the past three years, attracting FDI worth 60 billion dollars in 2016-17, and going up in the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Index by 32 ranks. ``Today bodies like World Bank, IMF and Moody’s are looking at India in a positive way,’’ he said. 
He attributed these developments to far-reaching policy reforms brought in the economy by his government over the past three years. "Reform to Transform is our guiding principle. Our aim is to make the entire system accountable, transparent and completely eradicate corruption,’’ he said. 
The PM said that more than half the investment made till now in sectors like construction, air transport, mining, computer software, hardware, electrical equipment has come in the last three years.
Describing the gathering of PIOs as a 'mini world Parliament' , the PM said: 'When there is news about how you all are influencing the geo-politics of where you live and how you are making policies, we feel proud. No matter where they are, I can imagine how happy your ancestors must be on seeing you all here.'
He said India's relations with countries of the world was governed by spirit of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' (Entire World Is One Family ).
'During earthquake in Nepal, flood in Sri Lanka, water problems in the Maldives; India was the first to respond. When crisis struck Yemen, we saved our 4,500 people as well as 2000 from other countries. India's humanity even in grave situations like these is a part of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam',' he said.
Earlier, in her opening remarks External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj described the day-long conference of PIO Parliamentarians and Mayors as a "unique’’ event. She said that Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was launched in 2003 when Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s Government was in power and January 9 was chosen as it marked the day when Mahatma Gandhi, the most celebrated Pravasi, had returned to India from South Africa. 
She said that as many as 270 PIOs from 28 countries were MPs and 11 countries have more than a million Indians living there and all of them have emotional and cultural links with India. 
The inaugural session was also attended by Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha M Thambi Durai, Rajya Sabha Vice Chairman PJ Kurien and the two Ministers of State for External Affairs MJ Akbar and General (Retd.) VK Singh. The biggest delegation of 20 MPs has come from Guyana. UNI

New Delhi, Jan 9: Terming 'Reforms to transform' as the guiding principle of the NDA government at the Centre, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the world was looking at India in a positive way in the last three years.
Addressing the first Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) Parliamentary Conference in the ‘Pravasi Bharatiya Kendra’ here, the Prime Minister said that in the last few years, the image of the country in eyes of the world has changed.
'Today, bodies like the World Bank, IMF and Moody's are looking at India in a very positive way. India has moved way ahead of the 'jaisa pehle tha vaisa chalta rahega, kuch badlega nahi' thinking.. Aims and aspirations of our people are on an all time high and that is because of the transformation the country is going through,' Mr Modi said in his address at the conference, being attended by as many as 124 Members of Parliament (MPs) and 17 mayors from 23 countries.
The PM said that more than half the investment in sectors like construction, air transport, mining, computer software, hardware, electrical equipment and many others, till now had happened in the last three years.
'Keeping in mind the needs of 21st century, the government is increasing the investment in technology and transportation,' he said.
'The 21st century is being considered the Asian century and India will be a major player in this with the growing stature of our country and you shall feel proud about our growth, hence inspiring us to work even harder,' the Prime Minister said.
Describing the gathering of PIOs as a 'mini world Parliament' , the PM said, 'When there is news about how you all are influencing the geo-politics of where you live and how you are making policies, we feel proud.
No matter where they are, I can imagine how happy your ancestors must be on seeing you all here.'
