Shillong, Feb 16: The Election Commission (EC) today said the matter of Meghalaya Director
General of Police SB Singh allegedly campaigning for Chief Minister Mukul
Sangma, filed by BJP is being looked into and necessary action will be taken if
found guilty.
“BJP has given a complaint and we are gathering the facts. Whatever, fact that
has been gathered till now NPP has withdrawn its complaint and BJP’s complaint
that INC is using officials, so far we have not received anything on this issue
but the process is on. Whatever emerges, the Commission will take necessary
action,” CEC OP Rawat told reporters here.
On being asked about poll-prepardness in all the three states – Tripura , Meghalaya and Nagaland, Mr Rawat said all the three states have their own peculiarities. The EC has taken adequate measure to ensure free and fair election.
To stop using hate speech during polls, the CEC said, “We have been getting feedback from the political parties and this issue will be look into. We must ensure this thing should not go on and vitiate this election.”
On militancy in Garo hills, he said, ' the issue has been raised by some parties and close monitoring has been initiated by the force. It is not that serious. Even the slightest aberration will be nipped in the area.”
To stop use of cash and other illegal activities to voters, Mr Rawat said GPS has been brought for swift action so that flying squad can move in the direction from where the complaint has been received.
Questioning on use of muscle power, he said, the commission was aware of the village council and it would urge them not to involve in any unlawful activities.
According to Mr Rawat, “there are a total of 3083 polling stations (3082 main and one auxiliary) at 2531 polling stations. Voters assistance booth will be set up at all polling stations. The total electorate is 18,44,785. Out of which 18,42,163 are general and 2621 service electors. In general electors, 9,12,849 are male while 9,29,314 are female. The number of first time voters are 89,045.”
He said that VVPATs will be used in all the 3083 polling station and the Commission has directed that one polling station of each constituency shall be randomly selected and VVPAT slips of this polling station shall be counted and matched with EVM results.
The CEC said that till February 13, cash, liquor, narcotics seized by the authorities were—cash Rs 17,25,000 and liquor 20,934.66 litres.
“ I am happy to inform you that one all women managed polling station in the 60-assembly constituencies will be set up. All such polling stations will be given a unique identity with a maroon coloured sign board / banner.Sixty seven all women managed polling stations will be there," he said.
For person with disabilities, Mr Rawat said, “ comprehensive and consolidated guidelines will be issued for making special arrangements like all premises will be provided with sturdy ramps (temporary or permanent) for barrier free access and proper link roads to polling stations. A total of 4096 person with disabalities have been mapped to 1404 polling station in the state. Social welfare department will also be engaged.”
The Election Commission has also made arrangements for solar lanterns and emergency where electricity is not accessible.
Polling for the coming election is scheduled on February 27 and the results will be announced on March 3. UNI
