Beijing, Oct 15 (PTI) Chinese football fans are angry and distraught over their much-fancied team's failure to score against gritty India in a rare football match between the two countries leading to a tame goalless draw.

The international friendly match held in the city of Suzhou, East China's Jiangsu Province, on Saturday was the first between the two Asian giants in 21 years.

Most Chinese fans were sure of victory at home in the Suzhou Olympic Sports Centre, but despite attacking most of the match, China failed to finish off multiple attempts, state-run Global Times reported.

A 0-0 draw with India in the "planet derby" between the world's two most populous nations enraged Chinese soccer fans, official media reported on Monday.

"It is absolutely devastating to think that these are the best 30 players from a population base of three billion," the daily quoted China Central Television (CCTV) soccer commentator He Wei as saying after the match.

"The weak opponent has made the Chinese soccer team look worse. Way to go India," posted one fan on social media site Sina Weibo.

In a keenly-watched footbal match played between the two most populous countries in the world but still laggards in the global game, China dominated the proceedings with waves of onslaughts on the Indian citadel but they failed to score a goal.

It was a remarkable achievement for India, playing on the Chinese soil for the first time, as they have drawn against a continental top side like China in their own den.

The draw is expected to take India higher in the FIFA rankings. They are now placed 97th while China are at 76th spot.

Suzhou (China), Oct 12 (PTI) Billion-plus populations but laggards in a truly global sport -- India and China will go head to head in a football friendly for the first time in 21 years on Saturday with the home team a firm favourite despite poor recent form.

The Indian team is playing an international match for the first time in China though their senior sides have faced each other 17 times in the past. China have played in India seven times, all of them in the invitational tournament Nehru Cup.

India has not won a single match out of the 17 while China has come out trumps 12 on occasions.

Five matches have ended in draws. The senior teams of India and China last played in the 1997 Nehru Cup in Kochi which the 'Red Dragons' won 2-1.

Saturday's match at Suzhou, around 100 km from Shanghai, has attracted a lot of interest among the football fans and the media in the backdrop of the competition between the two countries in several spheres as well as the fact that they are playing a football match for the first time after 1997.

Neighbours India and China account for one-third of the world's population and they are the fastest growing and competing economies in the world but they have remained "sleeping giants" with nothing much to show at the world stage.

This is more true for India as the country has not featured in a single FIFA World Cup while China has done so once -- in 2002 when they exited from the group stages after losing all their three matches.

Despite being a lesser force on the global stage, China, nonetheless, is one of the established football countries in Asia. The 'Red Dragons' have been consistently among the top-10 in Asia and in the top-100 in the world.

The country is now 76th in FIFA rankings and seventh in Asia.

China has played 11 times in the Asian Cup, the continent's top-flight competition and has finished runners-up twice and third as many times.

India, on the other hand, has played only thrice in the Asian Cup (1964 runners-up; 1984 and 2011) and recently broke into the top 100 in the FIFA rankings after a long time. The country is now 97th in FIFA rankings and 15th in Asia.

It is a bold move on India's part to play against China as they have not played in the recent past against a top side in the continent except in the Asian Cup or the World Cup qualifiers and it is also fraught with consequences.

The match, being played by both sides in the FIFA international friendly window as part of preparations for the AFC Asian Cup in January next month, will test India's 'real' progress and its stake as a country hoping to be among the Asian elite.

"We are fully aware that China are a big side in the region. They will be a very difficult side. They want to play possession football, attacking football," said coach Stephen Constantine

"We will go all out for a win. But if we lose, we will try to find out the positive aspects."

Captain Sunil Chhetri wondered just what took so long for the two countries to play each other.

"We should not afford them much space. At the same time, whenever we find a little room of opportunity, we have to construct the moves and counter them," said Chhetri.

China are the favourites to win tomorrow's match but the home side would know that it cannot be complacent as it has been struggling of late after a 0-1 loss to an inexperienced Qatar last month and then a 0-0 stalemate with Bahrain.

The home team's 2006 World Cup winning Italian coach Marcello Lippi cannot afford to anything other than a win on Saturday with less than three months left for the Asian Cup, which will be his last tournament with the Chinese national side.

Puducherry, Jul 16 :  Hailing France on its victory in the football World Cup, Puducherry Lt Governor Kiran Bedi today called for efforts to build on the spirit of celebration by promoting the game in the former French colony.

France defeated Croatia 4-2 in the FIFA World Cup final in Moscow yesterday to win the title for a second time.

"We can build on this spirit of celebration by promoting football in the union territory by organising inter-village, inter-town and inter-city football tournaments," Bedi said in a WhatsApp message to mediapersons here.

"It costs just one ball to unite as was visible in the French team," she added.

The former IPS officer also said "we in Puducherry wanted France to win the World Cup as the Union Territory has a very memorable and historical bond with France."

Thousands of people in the union territory have maintained close ties with France, which also generously supports Puducherry in several ways, the Lt Governor said. PTI

Riyadh, Jan 13: Saudi Arabia has for the first time allowed women to spectate at a football match, part of an easing of strict rules on gender separation by the ultra-conservative Muslim country, a BBC News report said.
Women fans filed into a stadium in the city of Jeddah on Friday, through family gates into family seating. But even segregated as they were, their presence in the stadium marked a significant moment for the Kingdom.
It follows a series of reforms intended to modernise the country.
Earlier on Friday, ahead of the football game, there was another small sign of change: the country's first car showroom dedicated to female customers was opened. For the first time, women will this June be allowed to get behind the wheel, after it was announced in September that a ban on women drivers would be lifted. Women at the car showroom milled around inspecting vehicles that they will be allowed to take out on the road when the ban ends.
At the stadium in Jeddah, female ushers were employed to greet the women fans and their families, who loudly cheered on the local team. Both ushers and fans wore the traditional black abaya robe.
A hashtag, translated as "the people welcome the entry of women into stadiums", was used tens of thousands of times in two hours as the match took place.
Lamya Khaled Nasser, a 32-year-old football fan from Jeddah, told AFP she was proud and looking forward to the match.
"This event proves that we are heading for a prosperous future. I am very proud to be a witness of this massive change," she told the AFP news agency.
Ruwayda Ali Qassem, another Jeddah resident, said it was a "historic day in the kingdom which culminates (in) ongoing fundamental changes".
"I am proud and extremely happy for this development and for the kingdom's moves to catch up with civilised measures adopted by many countries," she said.
The Saudi government said last week women would be allowed to attend a second match on Saturday and a third next Thursday.
Ahead of the game on Friday, clubs took to Twitter to encourage women to attend, with some even offering the traditional abaya robe in team colours.
Saudi Arabia's royal family and religious establishment adhere to an austere form of Sunni Islam known as Wahhabism, and Islamic codes of behaviour and dress are strictly enforced.
Under Saudi Arabia's guardianship system, women must be accompanied by a male family member to travel, and work. Most restaurants and cafes have two sections, one for just men and one for families, which are for women and their husbands and families.
The recent reforms are part of a gradual process of modernisation under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who is attempting to make the Kingdom more moderate.
A decades long ban on cinemas was lifted in December as part of the crown prince's vision to boost the country's entertainment industry. The move followed the country's first Comic Con convention in Jeddah in February.
However there has been some opposition to the reforms by Saudi clerics and conservative members of society. They believe the morals of Saudi citizens will be corrupted and they have challenged perceptions of Islamic and national identity. UNI

Arsenal qualified despite dropping their first points in Group H as they were held 0-0 at home by Red Star Belgrade while Lazio, Dynamo Kiev and FCSB, formerly Steaua Bucharest, joined them in the round of 32.
There was an extraordinary start at Vitoria Guimaraes where visitors Olympique Marseille had substitute Patrice Evra sent off before kick-off after players became involved in a brawl with fans of their own team.
An Olympique player identified by the media as Evra was seen aiming a karate-style kick at supporters who had invaded the area behind the goal.

Houssem Aouar turned in the second from Memphis Depay's pass and Depay headed the third in the 90th minute.
To add to the indignity, Everton had Morgan Schneiderlin sent off for a second bookable offence 10 minutes from the end.
Lyon joined Atalanta on eight points at the top of the group after the Serie A side conceded a last-minute goal and were held 1-1 at Apollon in Cyprus.
Milan stayed top of Group D with 8 points, two ahead of their Greek rivals, although they really needed a win to lift the pressure on coach Vincenzo Montella.
Riccardo Montolivo hit the post for the Italians early in the second half and that was as close as they got.
Dinamo Kiev went through with a 1-0 win at Young Boys as Vitaliy Buyalskiy scored the winner in their Group B match.

West Ham United midfielder Michail Antonio is recovering ahead of schedule from a hamstring surgery but will still miss their opening Premier League game against Manchester United, manager Slaven Bilic has said.
Antonio, voted the club's player of the player last season, is recovering from a hamstring injury that ended his campaign in April during a 1-0 victory over Swansea City.
Both Antonio and teammate Andy Carroll, who is also on the sidelines with a long-term injury, were left out of the squad for pre-season tours of Austria and Germany.
"Michail and Andy are in London," Bilic told reporters during the club's pre-season trip to Germany.
"He (Antonio) is ahead of the plan.
The plan is for him to miss the first game of the season.
" Bilic was less optimistic about injury-prone striker Carroll, who has featured only 12 times for the club in 2017.
The 28-year-old England international endured a stop-start campaign, nursing groin and knee issues for the majority of last season.
"Andy is still not able to train with the team but he is working hard at Rush Green with the physios," Bilic added.
"I am frustrated he cannot play, now he is still injured and it is a big loss for us.
" West Ham meet Werder Bremen in a pre-season friendly today before facing the German side again tomorrow.Agencies
