Nashik, Jan 16 :  Two persons, including a policeman, were injured in an attack by a leopard in Nashik district of Maharashtra, police said Wednesday.

The feline entered a house in the tribal-dominated Kalwan taluka on Tuesday, an official at Abhona police station said.

On getting information, a police team from Abhona rushed to the spot.

While the policemen were trying to evict the leopard from the house, the animal attacked them and those staying in the house before running away, the official said.

The house owner and an assistant police inspector received injuries in the attack, he said.

They were taken to a government-run hospital where they were provided medical treatment, he added.                                         PTI

Mumbai, Oct 5: As many as 170 tehsils in 13 districts of Maharashtra have received deficient rainfall this year because of which the water level in dams has gone down drastically, officials said.

The state government has started addressing the issue by deploying tankers for drinking water supply and is assessing whether the situation can be called as a drought.

According to official figures, the Aurangabad (in Marathwada region) and Nashik divisions received the lowest rainfall this year and have just about 27.59 per cent and 64.89 per cent of water respectively stored in dams there.

Additional chief secretary (relief and rehabilitation) Medha Gadgil said the announcement of drought in any area is a three-stage procedure.

"The government has identified 170 tehsils in 13 districts which have received less rainfall, where a first trigger has been implemented," she said.

Trigger implies the first step to identify whether drought can be declared in a place. However, the government has clarified that the announcement of first trigger does not mean these places are facing drought.

"The state government is expecting a detailed report on soil moisture index, normalised difference vegetation index and normalised difference water index from the National Crop Forecast Centre in the coming week, based on which a second trigger will be implemented," Gadgil said.

The third and last step of ground level assessment will be held in the identified tehsils based on which a third trigger will be implemented, she said.

After ground level assessment, areas with losses up to 33 per cent will be declared as "moderate" drought-affected and those with losses over 50 per cent will be declared as "intense" drought-affected areas, she said.

To address the situation, as many as 329 tankers have been supplying water to villages and hamlets across Maharashtra as on October 1, as against 107 tankers deployed around the same period last year, according to data from the state water supply and sanitation department.

Of the 329 tankers, 300 are supplying water in the Aurangabad and Nashik divisions.

In the Aurangabad division, 182 tankers have been supplying water to 171 villages, while last year only 28 tankers were used.

In the Nashik division, 118 tankers have been pressed into service in 480 villages as against 24 tankers used last year. Besides, 21 tankers are being used to supply water in the Pune division and eight in Nagpur division.

A revenue department official said the situation may change if the state continues to get showers from withdrawal of the monsoon which takes place around mid-October.

The procedure to declare drought has to be completed before October 31, he added.

"The Marathwada region is facing 20 per cent shortage of rainfall as compared to the annual average. Excess showers occurred in the state's coastal areas and south Maharashtra like Kolhapur and few places in Satara district, which contribute little to the state's agriculture sector," a MeT department official said.

In the current season, the Nashik division has 64.89 per cent of water stock as against 82.05 per cent last year, while the Aurangabad division has only 27.59 per cent water as against 65.24 per cent in 2017.

The Amravati division had 58.11 per cent of water stock as against 38.36 per cent last year, while the Nagpur division has 49.59 per cent water stock as against 47.68 per cent the previous year.

The Pune has 84.53 per cent of water stock as against 89.71 per cent last year while the and Konkan division has 89.98 per cent as against 95.33 per cent last year. (PTI)

Nashik, Sep 29: The body of a 10-year-old boy, who was missing for three days, was found floating in a well near here in Maharashtra, police said Saturday.

Police suspect it to be a case of suicide.

The boy, a Class 5 student, went to school on September 26, but did not return home. His mother had scolded him for not attending school regularly, they said.

His parents, who are into flower selling business, registered a missing person's complaint the next day, the police said.

The boy's body was found floating in a well in the Vadala-shivar area of the city Friday, they said.

It was spotted by local residents, who informed the police. The body was fished out and handed over to the boy's parents after post-mortem, the police said.

The police said they suspect the boy jumped into the well as he was miffed over the scolding he got from his mother.

An accidental death case has been registered, they added. (PTI)

Nashik (Maha), Aug 28 : Nashik Police Commissioner Ravinderkumar Singhal has successfully completed the Ironman triathlon which involves a set of physically gruelling activities.

The event, which includes cycling for a staggering 180 km, swimming for around 4 km and a 42-km full marathon, was held in France on Sunday.

Singhal, 53, completed the triathlon in 15 hours and 13 minutes as against the stipulated time of 17 hours, his trainer Dr Mustafa Topiwala told reporters here yesterday.

The Maharashtra-cadre IPS officer had undergone extensive training before heading to France last week to take part in the international competition, he said.

Earlier, model-turned-actor Milind Soman had successfully completed the race in 2015 and Maharashtra's senior IPS officer Krishna Prakash participated in it last year, Topiwala said.PTI

Nashik, Aug 17: After a break of few days, rains returned to the Nashik city and its adjoining areas in North Maharashtra.

The Nashik city and almost all the 15 tehsils of the district experienced good rain since yesterday.

Rains lashed Igatpuri, Trimbakeshwar, Sinnar and Dindori tehsils, among others, according to reports reaching district headquarters here today.

The irrigation department has released 4,172 cusec of water from the Darna dam and 1,012 cusec from the Gangapur dam following heavy downpour in their catchment areas, official sources said.

Rainfall figures (in mm) recorded in the last 24-hour ended at 8 this morning were: Nashik (27.2 mm), Igatpuri (65), Trimbakeshwar (46), Dindori (14), Peint (101), Niphad (54.2), Sinnar (26.4), Chandvad (54), Deola (43.4), Nandgaon (60), Malegaon (64), Yeola (59), Baglan (57), Kalwan (57) and Surgana (86).

The district has recorded a total of 814.2 mm of rains since the beginning of the monsoon this year, said the sources. (PTI)

Nashik, Jun 27 : A Sukhoi aircraft crashed near here this morning, police said. There were no casualties, police said, adding both the pilots ejected safely before the plane hit ground.

The under-production Sukhoi Su-30MKI twinjet multirole air superiority fighter of HAL crashed at Wavi-Tushi village near Pimpalgaon Baswant town, around 25 km from Nashik, police said.

The aircraft crashed at 11.05 am and the Pimpalgaon police station received information about the crash at 11.15 am, a police official told PTI.

The aircraft, developed by Russia's Sukhoi and built under licence by the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), had taken off from the HAL airstrip near Nashik, police said.

The IAF personnel at Ojhar Air Force station have rushed to the site, police said.   PTI

Mumbai/Nashik, Jun 23 : Eight people, including seven women, were today killed and eight others injured when the multi-utility vehicle they were travelling in collided with a State Transport bus on the busy Mumbai-Agra Road near Nashik, police said.

The accident happened at around 11am today after the tyre of the MUV burst at Shirvada Phata and it rammed into an ST bus coming from the opposite direction, Sanjay Darade, Superintendent of Police said.

The MUV, carrying people who were going to attend a marriage ceremony, was moving towards Nashik from Dhule while the bus was headed towards Satara, the SP said.

"The driver lost control of the vehicle after its tyre burst and collided with the ST bus," Darade said.

An accidental death report (ADR) has been registered at Vadner Bhairav Police Station in this case, he said.

A Vadner Bhairav police official identified the deceased as Dhanubai Kakulte (65), Ratna Gangurde (45), Tejashree Shinde (17), Krishnabai Shinde (55), Saraswatibai Jagtap (66), Shobha Pagare (35), Siddheshwari More (14) and Ajay Gangurde (46).

He said that deceased Ajay Gangurde was the drive of the MUV.

He added that further probe into the incident was underway, the SP said.  PTI

Nashik, Jun 23 : Seventy-two people were fined and a sum of Rs 3.6 lakh collected from them in Nashik on the first day of the plastic ban that came into effect across Maharashtra today, a civic corporation official said.

An official release from the Nashik Municipal Corporation stated that various civic teams fanned out across the six municipal divisions of the city and fined violators as per the provisions of the plastic ban notification issued by the Maharashtra government on March 23.

Over 350 kilograms of plastic items were also seized, the release informed.

On March 23, the state government imposed a ban on manufacturing, use, sale, distribution and storage of plastic materials such as one-time-use bags, spoons, plates, PET and PETE bottles and thermocol items.

As per the government's notification, the fine for first-time and second-time offenders will be Rs 5,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively. A third violation will attract a fine of Rs 25,000 and a jail term for three months.  PTI

Nashik, Jun 16: A couple allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison at their residence in Ambad locality here, due to "harassment" by five money-lenders, police said today.
The incident took place yesterday and the deceased were identified as Vasudev Ambadas Jadhav (38) and his wife Sangita (34), police said.
"Police recovered a 'suicide note' beside their bodies, which states that both of them were ending their lives as they were fed up with the harassment by five money-lenders from whom they had taken loan," an official of Ambad police station said.
According to police, the deceased were originally from Shirpur in Dhule district of Maharshtra.
"Vasudev, a labour contractor, had borrowed money from the lenders for business purposes. He had repaid some part of the money, but the lenders were pressurising him for the remaining amount," the official said.
"Friday morning, the couple consumed poison. But the incident came to light when one of their relatives went to their place and found them lying motionless," he added.
The relative immediately alerted the police, who rushed to the spot. The bodies were sent for post-mortem.
Offences have been registered against the five money-lenders and a probe has been launched, police said. (PTI)

Nashik, May 4: A 21-year-old woman was stabbed to death by her husband on their first marriage anniversary over a petty quarrel in this district of Maharashtra on Thursday evening.
According to the police, the victim, identified as Rama Saariputra Shinde (21), married Saariputra Punjaram Shinde last year and both resided at Pandit Nagar in Cidco area of city.
On Thursday, a verbal duel took an ugly turn when Saaripura, unable to control his anger, attacked Rama with a sharp-edged weapon, resulting in her on the spot death.
Saaripura fled the scene after the incident.
On being informed, police rushed to the spot and conducted panchanama. The body was sent to District Civil hospital for post-mortem.
A murder case against Sariputra has been registered and further investigation was on. UNI

Nashik, Mar 25 :  Two sisters drowned and their cousin was rescued while they were playing nearby a canal at Devghat village in malegaon taluka of the district.
According to police sources, the sisters identified as Neha Santosh Ahire (10) and Bhoomi Santosh Ahire (6) on Saturday afternoon went to the canal along with their cousin sister Khushi Ravindra Ahire to swim, while their mother was washing clothes.
The incident took place when one of the sisters slipped into the water, and others tried to save her.
Local fishermen managed to rescue Khushi but could not save the others, said police.
later they fished out the body of the two sisters and rushed to Kalwadi primary health centre, where doctors declared them brought dead. UNI

Nashik, Mar 25 : A 19-year-old college student from Nashik has committed suicide as he was unable to pay his college fee.
Vishal Manik Kute, committed suicide by jumping in a well at Mahalkhed village in Yeola taluka of the district on Saturday, police said on Sunday.
Vishal went missing since Wednesday. His body was found floating in a well on Saturday afternoon by some locals of the village.
According to the police, Vishal took the extreme step as he didn't had money to pay his college fee. He was in the first year of Bachelor of Science course. UNI

Nashik, Mar 14: Two people, including a girl, were killed and one was seriously hurt in two separate incidents in the city last night.
Police said Harshada Prabhakar Landge (22) was coming to the city by a two-wheeler, when a truck dashed her bike at Pathardi Phata on Mumbai-Agra national highway. A truck driver was arrested and further investigation was on.
In another mishap, a youth (27) was killed and his father was seriously injured when their bike was slipped at Darna bridge near Deolai camp area last night.
The deceased was identified as Tushar Tanaji Kedar, police added. UNI

Nashik, Jan 17: Veteran social activist and founder of Probodhini Trust, Rajanitai Limaye passed away following a brief illness. 
Limaye (82) had been unwell for the two months and is survived by her husband, son and daughter.
The end came at a private hospital on Tuesday and her eyes were donated to Tulsi Eye hospital, while her body was donated to medical college Nashik.
Limaye set up Prabodhini trust in 1977, an institution for the draining, education and rehabilitation of the mentally challenged.
Besides, she established her first school Prabodhini vidyamandir for specially-abled children, with only four students which now has gone up to 350.
Rajanitai is the aunt of renowned Marathi actress and author Nishigandha Wad and elder sister of senior litterateur Vijay Wad.
She wrote collection of poems for children, Goduli Gani. She also wrote Jagar and Dhyanimani books.
Rajanitai won many awards, including National award for teacher in 1986, which was received at the hand of the then president of India R Venkatraman. UNI

The first yatra will be held in Ahmednagar on Tuesday will be led by senior leader Ghulam Nabi Azad. Opposition leader Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil stated that the state government has lost its credibility by cheating farmers on loan waivers. The government is not serious on any issue and has committed historic blunders. Nashik, Sept 20: The city and most parts of the district were hit by heavy rains after a gap of eleven days throwing life out of gear in the district. People were seen performing poojas on roadside near the Godavari as it was inaccessible due to flooding. Heavy downpour pounded Nashik road, Panchavati, Indiranagar, Satpur Ambad, Cidco and Bhagur and the main areas of the city since last evening leading to snapping of power supply. Rivers, streams and nullahs in the district are flowing to capacity in most parts-- Igatpuri, Trimbakeshwar, Yeola, Nashik and Sinnar-- in the district. An alert has been sounded in some places due to flood. There was water-logging in some low-lying and suburban areas of the city. Nashik, Aug 18 :  With the death of one more patient, the toll due to swine flu has shot up to 38 in the last eight months. According to sources, the victim, Sushila Vitthal Ghayal (57) resident of Naitale village in Niphad taluka of the district was being treated in the District Civil Hospital as he was detected with swine flu symptoms yesterday. A total of 38 people have died of swine flu in the district and city between since January 2017. Currently, six patients, including five women are being treated in the civil hospital for the same disease. Their nose or throat swab samples have been sent to Pune laboratory for analysis, sources added. UNI
