Bodies of man, woman found in well in Rajasthan

Jaipur, Jan 16 : The bodies of a 28-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman were found Wednesday in a well in Rajasthan's Jhunjhunu district, police said.

The man was identified as Rajesh and the woman was his neighbour, Guda police Station House Officer Ashok Chaudhary said.

He said both of them apparently had an affair.

The duo had been missing since Tuesday night and their bodies were found in the well in Sigror village Wednesday, he added.

No suicide note was recovered and a case was registered under CrPc section 174 (unnatural death), the SHO said.

The bodies were handed over to the family members after post-mortem, he said. PTI

Missing 10-year-old Nashik boy found dead

Nashik, Sep 29: The body of a 10-year-old boy, who was missing for three days, was found floating in a well near here in Maharashtra, police said Saturday.

Police suspect it to be a case of suicide.

The boy, a Class 5 student, went to school on September 26, but did not return home. His mother had scolded him for not attending school regularly, they said.

His parents, who are into flower selling business, registered a missing person's complaint the next day, the police said.

The boy's body was found floating in a well in the Vadala-shivar area of the city Friday, they said.

It was spotted by local residents, who informed the police. The body was fished out and handed over to the boy's parents after post-mortem, the police said.

The police said they suspect the boy jumped into the well as he was miffed over the scolding he got from his mother.

An accidental death case has been registered, they added. (PTI)

465 dead in 5 states due to rains, floods during monsoon

New Delhi, Jul 28: As many as 465 people have lost their lives due to floods and rains in five states during the current monsoon season so far.

According to the Home Ministry's National Emergency Response Centre (NERC), 138 people have died in Maharashtra, 125 in Kerala, 116 in West Bengal, 52 in Gujarat and 34 in Assam due to the floods and rains.

The deluges and rains have hit 26 districts in Maharashtra, 22 in West Bengal, 21 in Assam, 14 in Kerala and 10 in Gujarat so far.

In Assam, 10.17 lakh people borne the brunt of rains and floods, of which 2.17 lakh were living in relief camps.

Twelve teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were engaged in rescue and relief operations in Assam, the NERC said.

A team of the NDRF comprises 45 personnel.

A total of 1.61 lakh people were affected by rains and floods in West Bengal where eight NDRF teams were deployed.

In Gujarat, 15,912 people were evacuated to safer locations after they were hit by floods and rains. 11 NDRF teams were positioned in the state.

In Kerala, the flood impacted 1.43 lakh people. The state registered 125 deaths due to heavy rains, while nine people are missing.

Four NDRF teams were deployed for rescue and relief operations in the southern state, while three were stationed in Maharashtra, which was battered by heavy rains. (PTI)

Blast at Chinese chemical plant kills 19

Beijing, Jul 13: An explosion at a chemical plant in southwest China left 19 dead and injured another 12, authorities said today, the latest industrial accident in a country where lax regulations often lead to tragedy.

The blast occurred at 6.30 pm last night at an industrial park in Sichuan province's Yibin city, according to a statement on the website of the local work safety administration.

The injured had been taken to hospital and were in stable condition, county officials said, adding that the resulting fire had been put out.

Photos on a local news site showed what appeared to be the burned out shell of a building surrounded by rubble. The company that owns the building where the fire occurred is a chemical manufacturer named Hengda, according to the official Xinhua news service.

China has been rocked by several industrial accidents in recent years. A septic tank explosion last November destroyed a wide swathe of a light industrial area in Ningbo, just south of Shanghai.

In 2015, giant chemical blasts in a container storage facility killed at least 165 people in the northern port city of Tianjin. The explosions caused more than 1 billion in damage and sparked widespread anger at a perceived lack of transparency over the accident's causes and its environmental impact.

A government inquiry eventually recommended 123 people be punished. Tianjin's mayor at the time of the accident was sentenced to 12 years in prison for graft in September. (AFP)

Kabul, Jul 12: At least 10 people were killed and hundreds of homes destroyed in a remote area of northeastern Afghanistan after melting snow triggered a landslide, officials said today.

A mountain lake in Panjshir, a province known for its snowcapped peaks north of Kabul, overflowed and sent water and mud cascading over Peshghor village, Omar Mohammadi, spokesman for the disaster management ministry, told AFP.

Villagers using shovels and other tools were desperately searching for survivors in the mud and debris as rescue teams were deployed to the area, Mohammadi said.

"We have deployed everything at hand to help the people," he said. "Some people are missing." Disasters such as avalanches and flash floods often hit in mountainous areas of Afghanistan as snow melts in the spring and summer.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, who is in Brussels for the NATO summit, said he was "deeply saddened" by the latest natural disaster.

"A number of people have lost their lives" in the landslide, Ghani said in a statement.

He ordered "relevant authorities to provide urgent assistance to the affected people".

The landslide comes as the country is in the grip of a nearly 17-year war between Afghan security forces and the Taliban. (AFP)

Three dead, seven injured in two accidents in JK

Jammu, Jul 12: Three people were killed and seven others injured when two vehicles rolled down gorges at separate places in Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi and Doda districts, police said today.

Tiku Rana (19) from Uttar Pradesh and Abhishek (22) from Punjab were killed when a load carrier skidded off a hilly road and fell into a stream near Chamayra in Reasi, an official said.

He said seven other people were injured in the accident which occurred last night when a group of labourers were returning from a construction site.

While Rana was declared "brought dead" at the Government Medical College Hospital here last night, Abhishek succumbed to injuries this morning, the official said.

Khushi Ram Rukwal (62) was killed when his car fell down a 200-feet deep gorge near Bhatta village in Doda district yesterday, he said.

Rukwal was travelling alone in the vehicle, the official said, adding that the body was handed over to the family for last rites. (PTI)

New Delhi, Jul 4: The body of an unidentified teenage girl was found near a jungle in southeast Delhi, the police said today.

Police were informed about the body lying in a jungle around 4.30 PM, said Chinmoy Biswal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast).

The body was sent to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for postmortem, he said.

Police are verifying footage of CCTV cameras installed around the area.

An auto-rickshaw driver was interrogated in connection with the case, the officer added. (PTI)

Annapolis (US) Jun 29: A man armed with a shotgun and smoke grenades burst into a newspaper office in the US city of Annapolis today, killing five people in what police described as a "targeted attack."

Officials said the shooting at the Capital Gazette newspaper was carried out by a white adult male resident of Maryland state who was being questioned in custody.

A reporter for the historic daily, which predates the United States, tweeted a chilling account of how the "gunman shot through the glass door to the office and opened fire on multiple employees."

"There is nothing more terrifying than hearing multiple people get shot while you're under your desk and then hear the gunman reload," crime reporter Phil Davis said.

There were five fatalities and two superficial injuries, the acting police chief of Anne Arundel county, Bill Krampf, told a news conference in Maryland's capital.

"This was a targeted attack on the Capital Gazette," Krampf said.

He said that police did not yet know the shooter's motive, but "we know that there were threats sent to the Gazette through social media." "We're trying to confirm what account that was and we're trying to confirm who actually sent them," Krampf added.

Capital Gazette editor Jimmy DeButts tweeted that he was "devastated & heartbroken. Numb." "I'm in no position to speak, just know @capgaznews reporters & editors give all they have every day. There are no 40 hour weeks, no big paydays - just a passion for telling stories from our community," DeButts wrote.

Chase Cook, a reporter at the newspaper, said the shooting would not stop The Capital -- the local print edition -- from going to press.

"I can tell you this: We are putting out a damn paper tomorrow," he tweeted.

Gracie Rustin, a dental assistant who was in the middle of a procedure on the second floor of the building when the attack took place, heard "loud noises" but did not immediately realise it was a shooting.

Then police rushed in and "were like, 'Leave, leave, leave!'" Rustin told AFP.

The shooting revived memories of a 2015 incident in Roanoke, Virginia in which two journalists were shot dead during a live broadcast on local television.

"Every shooting like this is horrific but one that occurs in a place of journalism is particularly disturbing and brings back the flood of memories of that tragic day for me," said Andy Parker, whose daughter Alison was one of the Roanoke victims.

President Donald Trump, who has been at loggerheads with much of the media since taking office, tweeted a message of support.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. Thank you to all of the First Responders who are currently on the scene," he wrote.

"A violent attack on innocent journalists doing their job is an attack on every American," White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders tweeted.

Several lawmakers also weighed in.

"My heart is with the families, friends and loved ones of the victims as we learn more about this terrible situation," Chris Van Hollen, the state's junior senator said. "We must unite to end the violence." "The senseless attack on a Maryland newspaper today is sickening. God bless these journalists," House Speaker Paul Ryan tweeted. (AFP)

Volleyball player shot dead in Hisar district

Hisar, Jun 27 : A district level volleyball player was shot dead by some unidentified armed assailants in Siswal village of Hisar district, police said here today.

The incident took place at about 10 pm yesterday under Adampur Police Station area when Kuldeep (25) was returning to his house in the village on a bike from community centre's volleyball ground, police said.

Before he could reach home, some unidentified persons came and opened several rounds of fire at Kuldeep, killing him on the spot, they said.

There was no street light when the firing incident took place and the accused managed to flee from the spot in darkness, the victim's kin said.

After receiving information, the police and forensic team reached the spot and started investigations.

The police have sent the body to civil hospital Hisar for postmortem examination.

A case has been registered in connection with the incident and further investigations were under progress, police said. PTI

Restaurant manager shot dead in Madhya Pradesh's Vidisha

Vidisha (MP), Jun 25 : A manager of a local restaurant in Madhya Pradesh's Vidisha district was shot dead by an unidentified person yesterday, a police official said.

The incident took place around 10 pm, he said.

"Restaurant manager Satyanarayan Rathore (36) was manning the counter when an unidentified person arrived there and shot him in the chest," City Superintendent of Police (CSP) Bharat Bhushan said.

The CSP added that Rathore was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

The owner of the restaurant, Rajesh Verma, said that Rathore did not have a dispute with anyone.

"Police teams have been formed to nab the accused.

Further investigations into the crime are continuing," Bhushan said. PTI

Thane, Jun 23 : Three persons today died and three others were injured after a multi-utility vehicle they were travelling in collided with a tempo on Varai bridge near Manor in neighbouring Palghar district, police said.

The accident happened on the busy Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway at around 4pm today and police teams had rushed to the spot, an official said.

"The Force Trax MUV rammed into a tempo coming from the opposite direction. Three persons, including a woman, died and three were injured. The injured have been shifted to a hospital in Virar," a Manor police official said.

He said that the process of identifying those dead was currently underway. PTI

3 people shot dead when they were sleeping outside their homes

Mathura (UP), Jun 19 : A retired Army personnel and two others were shot dead separately when they were sleeping outside their homes at a village in the Raya police station area of the district, police said today.

The three -- retired army personnel Bhanvar Singh (55), former village head Satya Prakaskh (72), and Sundar Singh (45) -- were killed at Bharau village last night.

In protest against the killings, the villagers refused to allow the bodies to be taken for post-mortem.

Senior police officers reached the village and pacified the villagers, after which the bodies were sent for autopsy.

Five teams of police have been formed to work out the case," Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Prabhakar Chaudhary said. PTI
