Aurangabad, Jan 27 :  Congress president Sonia Gandhi had sought a written undertaking from the Shiv Sena that the new government in Maharashtra would work within the ambit of the Constitution, former chief minister Ashok Chavan has said.

Sonia Gandhi had given clear guidelines that the state government must work within the frame of Constitution, the state PWD minister said at a meeting in Nanded on Sunday.

"She told us that first we should get this in writing (from Sena) that the government should work within the ambit of the Constitution and shouldn't violate the Constitution preamble. We were told to convey this to Uddhav Thackeray," Chavan said.

Thackeray was sworn in CM in November last year, heading an alliance government with the Congress and NCP, after results of the October 21 Assembly elections failed to throw up a clear winner.

Chavan said Gandhi had also told state Congress leaders that if the government doesn't function as expected, the party should quit it. "We conveyed the same to Thackeray.

He agreed and we went to form the government," Chavan said.

Responding to Chavan's remarks, former CM Devendra Fadnavis said Shiv Sena should clarify about the 'deals' done before the Maha Vikas Aghadi government was formed.

"If alliance parties don't have faith (in Sena) why is the Sena in government," Fadnavis told media.

Aurangabad, Jan 16 :  Through initiatives such as the Jalyukt Shivar water conservation scheme, the BJP-led Maharashtra government has made 16,000 villages free of water scarcity, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said Wednesday.

He was speaking at an international conference on micro-irrigation here.

"Micro-irrigation facilities have increased three times in the state," Fadnavis said at the event which was also attended by Union ministers Nitin Gadkari, Arjun Ram Meghwal, Fiji Agriculture Minister Mahendra Reddy and others.

"Water is very precious and we still have not realised it....we don't get regular rainfall and micro-irrigation is the only solution. Earlier, two countries would fight over water. Now such crises erupt between districts and even tehsils," said Fadnavis.

"The government is working hard on the Jalyukt Shivar initiative and has made 16,000 villages water-neutral (free of water scarcity). Thirty-four lakh hectares of land is (has been brought) under irrigation. Micro-irrigation facilities have increased three times," the chief minister claimed.

"Through the Nanaji Deshmukh Krushi Sanjivani project, we are working on providing sustainable irrigation in 4,000 villages," Fadnavis added.

While the BJP-led state government has put a lot of stress on village-level water conservation projects, the state faced a poor monsoon in 2018, forcing it to declare drought in 151 tehsils in 26 out of the total 36 districts.                            PTI

A 21-year-old woman medical student was allegedly strangled to death by an unidentified person in a college hostel here in Maharashtra, police said.


Aurangabad (Maha), Dec 13 (PTI) A 21-year-old woman medical student was allegedly strangled to death by an unidentified person in a college hostel here in Maharashtra, police said.

Akanksha Anil Deshmukh, hailing from Beed district, was found unconscious in her room by a warden of the hostel at the Mahatma Gandhi Mission Medical College on Wednesday, Deputy Commissioner of Police Rahul Khade said.

She was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared her dead, he said.

The autopsy at the city-based Government Medical College and Hospital revealed that she died of strangulation, Khade said.

A case under IPC section 302 (murder) was registered by the city police, he said.

No arrest was made so far in this connection, police said, adding that a search was on for the culprit.

The woman was pursuing a physiotherapy course at the college, police added.

Aurangabad, Oct 15 (PTI) A real estate broker was killed for allegedly posting some comments on a WhatsApp group, police said Monday.

Moin Mehmood Pathan, 35, was attacked with swords, knives and rods Sunday night by a group of around 20 persons in Fatimanagar locality of Harsul area here, police said.

Police attributed the killing to enmity between two local groups, police said. Pathan had a bickering with members of the rival group, police said.

On Sunday evening, he posted a message on the WhatsApp group, challenging his opponents. Hours later, around 20 youth reached Fatimanagar with weapons and attacked Pathan, police said.

His nephew Irfan Shaikh Rahim tried to intervene and was also assaulted, police said. He received head injuries.

Pathan was taken to the government medical college and hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

Police nabbed six alleged assailants early Monday, while search is on for the others, an official said.

Mumbai, Oct 5: As many as 170 tehsils in 13 districts of Maharashtra have received deficient rainfall this year because of which the water level in dams has gone down drastically, officials said.

The state government has started addressing the issue by deploying tankers for drinking water supply and is assessing whether the situation can be called as a drought.

According to official figures, the Aurangabad (in Marathwada region) and Nashik divisions received the lowest rainfall this year and have just about 27.59 per cent and 64.89 per cent of water respectively stored in dams there.

Additional chief secretary (relief and rehabilitation) Medha Gadgil said the announcement of drought in any area is a three-stage procedure.

"The government has identified 170 tehsils in 13 districts which have received less rainfall, where a first trigger has been implemented," she said.

Trigger implies the first step to identify whether drought can be declared in a place. However, the government has clarified that the announcement of first trigger does not mean these places are facing drought.

"The state government is expecting a detailed report on soil moisture index, normalised difference vegetation index and normalised difference water index from the National Crop Forecast Centre in the coming week, based on which a second trigger will be implemented," Gadgil said.

The third and last step of ground level assessment will be held in the identified tehsils based on which a third trigger will be implemented, she said.

After ground level assessment, areas with losses up to 33 per cent will be declared as "moderate" drought-affected and those with losses over 50 per cent will be declared as "intense" drought-affected areas, she said.

To address the situation, as many as 329 tankers have been supplying water to villages and hamlets across Maharashtra as on October 1, as against 107 tankers deployed around the same period last year, according to data from the state water supply and sanitation department.

Of the 329 tankers, 300 are supplying water in the Aurangabad and Nashik divisions.

In the Aurangabad division, 182 tankers have been supplying water to 171 villages, while last year only 28 tankers were used.

In the Nashik division, 118 tankers have been pressed into service in 480 villages as against 24 tankers used last year. Besides, 21 tankers are being used to supply water in the Pune division and eight in Nagpur division.

A revenue department official said the situation may change if the state continues to get showers from withdrawal of the monsoon which takes place around mid-October.

The procedure to declare drought has to be completed before October 31, he added.

"The Marathwada region is facing 20 per cent shortage of rainfall as compared to the annual average. Excess showers occurred in the state's coastal areas and south Maharashtra like Kolhapur and few places in Satara district, which contribute little to the state's agriculture sector," a MeT department official said.

In the current season, the Nashik division has 64.89 per cent of water stock as against 82.05 per cent last year, while the Aurangabad division has only 27.59 per cent water as against 65.24 per cent in 2017.

The Amravati division had 58.11 per cent of water stock as against 38.36 per cent last year, while the Nagpur division has 49.59 per cent water stock as against 47.68 per cent the previous year.

The Pune has 84.53 per cent of water stock as against 89.71 per cent last year while the and Konkan division has 89.98 per cent as against 95.33 per cent last year. (PTI)

Aurangabad(Bihar), Aug 10: The Enforcement Directorate today seized assets worth Rs 30 lakh belonging to Maoist leader Sandeep Yadav alias Vijay Yadav alias Rupesh here in connection with a money laundering case, an ED official said.

Sandeep Yadav is a central committee member of the CPI (Maoist) and a resident of Lutua village under the jurisdiction of Lutua police station of Gaya district.

The Maoist leader is an absconder in more than 100 cases lodged in different police stations of various states like Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Chhattisgarh for his involvement in naxal related incidents.

"We have seized two properties - a plot and a single storeyed house - belonging to Sandeep Yadav in Aurangabad district. The house has been sealed. The properties are in the name of Yadav's wife Rajanti Devi," Enforcement Directorate, Patna Assistant Director Adarsh Kumar told reporters here.

The ED team seized seven decimal land located in ward 10 of Aurangabad town while another property - a single storeyed house - located near JK Motel on GT road in the district, he said.

The properties have been seized under money laundering Act, Kumar said adding that a case of money laundering was lodged and the properties were attached earlier.

The accused person was issued summons in the case but did not appear as he has absconding in more than 100 cases lodged against him in various states.

The seized properties will now be that of the Central government and the said properties can neither be sold nor can be bought, he said. (PTI)

Aurangabad, Maharashtra, May 11: Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran (MJP) has sanctioned Rs 20.69 crore for the 48 km long water pipeline project to take water from Jayakwadi Dam to Bordhegaon Medium Project to supply water to thirsty Lasur Station, among 13 villages, in the district.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday evening, Gangapur BJP MLA Prashant Bamb said since long time those villages were getting water through water tankers at least eight months in a year and the administration was spending Rs three crore for per year.
Pipeline from Bordhegaon to Lasur Station already ready was ready and after the new scheme, all the villages having 75,000 population would get water on permanent basis, he said.
Mr Bamb said, 'A team of experts had visited the villages and after my continuous follow up with MJP and finance department, the fund has been sanctioned.
Tenders would be issued soon and the project would start shotrly, he said. UNI

Aurangabad, Maharashtra, May 8: Union Minister of State for Social Justice and RPI-A president Ramdas Athawale on Tuesday said he was not happy being a member of the Rajya Sabha, hence, he will contest in the next Lok Sabha election. 
Talking to media persons here in evening after distributing gas agency to identified beneficiary of the Scheduled Caste community under the Ujjwala scheme, he said, "I have already discussed with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari about a safe Lok Sabha constituency, including South Mumbai or Ramtek." 
He added that if BJP-Shiv Sena forged alliance in LS poll, then he will ask for the South Mumbai constituency. 
Talking about ongoing differences between BJP and Shiv Sena, the RPI-A chief said, "I have informed Prime Minister Narendra Modi in this regard and hopes Uddhav Thackeray and Mr Modi will meet soon and sort out the differences."
He also clarified that Congress president Rahul Gandhi and Mr Modi were not against Dalits.
On Mr Gandhi's claim that he would become Prime Minister in 2019 if the party wins the Lok Sabbha election, Mr Athawale in his style replied,"agar das pandraha saal tak rahegi Narendra Modi  ki aandhi to fir kaise Panta pradhan banege Rahul Gandhi (if the Modi wave remains for next 10-15 years, then how will Mr Gandhi become prime minister?)."
Talking about unity amongst the Dalits, he said, "Those who are forming groups daily are talking about Dalit unity. I am ready for the unity if the entire Bahujan Samaj comes together, then there will be real unity." UNI

Aurangabad, Maharashtra, May 3: Paani Foundation Founder and Bollywood actor Aamir Khan has appealed to the people not to waste water.
Addressing a press conference along with his spouse Kiran Rao and CEO Satyajit Bhatka after visiting site of water conservation in Kolhi Village in Vaijapur taluka of the district, he said those who were staying in urban areas should do water harvesting.
He said, 'At least 1.5 lakh urban people across the state contributed their voluntary work as 'Jalmitra' on the occasion of International Day in 100 villages which got tremendous response to our call.'
He said urbanist had reliase that what was important of water and what were it's resources.
Paani Foundation is people's movement to make Maharashtra drought free. It is working seriously since last three years for the purpose after inspiration of Satyamev Jayate show.
This year 4,039 villages across 75 talukas participated in the Paani Foundation's Water Cup Competition 2018.

Aurangabad, Maharahstra, Apr 26: As many as 99,344 workers are engaged presently under different types of work under the Employment Guarantee Scheme (EGS) in the Marathwada region.
According to sources, at present a total of 99,344 workers are engaged in 7,936 types of works in total 6,643 gram panchyat in the region.
The highest 22,293 workers are engaged on 1584 works in 303 gram panchayats in Beed district followed by 15,932 in 169 gram panchayats in Nanded district, 14,451 workers on 1,362 works in Osmanabad district, 13,407 workers on 924 works in Hingoli dustrict, 13,341 workers on 1227 works in Latur district, 8,669 workers on 885 works in Aurangabad district, 8,352 workers on 380 works in Jalna district and lowest 2,909 workers in 89 gram panchayats in Parbhani district, they added. UNI

Aurangabad, Maharashtra, Apr 19: Incidents of distressed farmers committing suicides are on an increase in the eight districts of Marathwada region which recorded a total of 278 cases since January 1 to April 16, registering a rise by 27 in the corresponding period last year.
The rise is registered despite the Maharashtra government waiving crop loans of 9 lakh farmers across the region and also implementing various measures like Jalyukat Shivar to tackle the situation. 
Primary causes of suicides seems mounting debt, no adequate return to their farm products, infertility, cotton crop affected by pink bolwrom pest, hailstorm rains and among other reasons, it said. 
The highest numbers of 51 suicides were reported in drought-prone Beed district followed by Aurangabad-45, Osmanabad-40, Parbhani-36, Jalna-31, Nanded and Latur-27 and lowest Hingoli district- 21. 
Of the 278 suicides, 115 cases have been found applicable for compensation, while 56 were rejected in inquiry by the authority. Inquiry in 107 suicides cases still pending, the report added. UNI

Aurangabad, Maharashtra, Apr 18: Unseasonal rain, accompanied with gusty winds, lashed various parts of Aurangabad, Latur, Beed and Osmanabad districts causing severe damage to the horticulture gardens, including mangoes and watermelons.
The sky was cloudy for the past couple of days and intermittent scanty unseasonal rainfall was witnessed almost in all tehsils of the district. 
On Tuesday, in Aurangabad and around, unseasonal rains hit with gusty winds resulting in a number of trees being uprooted and most of the areas plunging into dark due electricity supply cut down for several hours.
Reports from Osmanabad stated that hailstorm rains hit a number of places in the district. 
During the rain, incidents of tin being blown away were reported at several places due to gusty winds.
In Aasti taluka of Beed district, rain hit with winds resulted in a woman Nanda Raut (40) being killed as lightning struck her when she was in working in her land.
Kaij tehsil also received similar rainfall with winds resulting in a numbers of mango garden were affected.
Reports from Latur stated that unseasonal rains lashed in the city bringing some respite from raising heat to the citizens.
Unseasonal rains were also reported in some of the places in Parbhani district, the report added.
Meanwhile, the weather department forecast rain with gusty winds in parts of Marathwada region. UNI

Aurangabad, Maharashtra, Apr 17: Only 24 per cent live water is left in dams in the parched region of Marathwada of Maharashtra. 
There are a total of 867 dams, including major, medium, minor and barrages, the water from where
is fastly evaporating due to rising mercury and limited water stock. 
Latest statistics available with the Divisional Commissioner office here stated that up to March 16 
there were 33 per cent (2664 mcum) live water stock remaining, but due to mercury shooting up in 
the region the water stocks have depleted significantly till April 15 which now stood at 24 per cent 
(2000 mcum), they said.
At the moment, only 2000 Mcum water stock of a total capacity of 7,911.27 Mcum is available 
in these dams, that is 24 per cent, they said.
In 11 major dams in the region, there is only 37 per cent live water stock available, of total capacity 
of 5,143 Mcum.
While 24 per cent live water stocks remain in 75 medium irrigation project and 14 per cent live water 
stocks in minor project. 
All the district administrations have started tankers to supply drinking water to the affected villages 
and Hamlet's in the region.
Aurangabad is most affected district in the region.
There is an urgent need to plan lifting of water from these projects in future, otherwise situation 
will worsen in the coming days, in the region, it added. UNI

Aurangabad, Maharashtra, Apr 13: Mortal remains of Indian army jawan Kiran Popatrao Throat, who was killed in firing by Pakistan, were consigned to flames on Friday at his native place at Fakirabadwadi near Ladgaon village of Vaijapur tehsil of this district. 
He was killed on April 11 by Pakistani army in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch and Rajuri sector on the Line of Control. His younger brother Amol Thorat lit the pyre.
Earlier, his body was arrived by a special aircraft at Chikalthana airport here last evening from New Delhi. It was received by Guardian Minister Dr Dipak Sawant, Mayor Nandakumar Ghodele and top military officers among others.
Thousands of people, shouting slogans, participated in the funeral procession.
Those prominent personalities participated in funeral ceremony were Vaijapur MLA Bhausaheb Chikatgaonkar, MLC Subhash Zambad, BJP state secretary Bhagwat Karad, Additional collector P L Sormare, Resident Collector Sandipan Sanap, Rural S P Dr Arti Singh among others. UNI

Aurangabad, Maharashtra, Apr 10: Owing to rising mercury and severe heat resulting in acute shortage of water, the district administration has announced to deploy 373 tankers in 297 villages in the region.
It has already acquired 672 private wells to supply water during the scarcity-like condition.
In Aurangabad, the most affected area in the region, as many as 284 water tankers are being engaged to supply water in 230 villages followed by 45 tankers in Jalna for 35 villages, 30 tankers in 21 villages in Nanded district, 10 in 8 villages in Parbhani district, 2 each in Hingoli and Beed districts, sources said. 
However, so far no tankers were needed in Latur and Osmanabad districts.
Last week, 316 water tankers supplied water in 255 villages, they added. UNI

Aurangabad, Maharashtra Apr 2: A teenager was killed, after his bike was hit by an unidentified vehicle on Sawangi bypass outskirts of the city.
Police said the victim was identified as Syed Alim Syed Fakir (19), resident of Gevrai in Phulambri tehsil. He came under the wheels of a vehicle, while moving on the Sawangi bypass road on Sunday, and died on the spot.

Aurangabad, Maharashtra, Mar 30: As many as 66 more panic-stricken and distressed farmers committed suicides in past 21 days in the eight district of Marathawada region.
With this the toll of suicide cases had shot up to 221 from January 1 to March 25 as compared to 155 on March 4, according to Divisional Commissioner Official sources.
It may be noted that 191 farmers had committed suicide during the same period last year. 
According to the updated reports of farmers' suicides, till March 25, 2018, 221 farmers had committed suicide in eight districts.
The highest number of 36 suicides were reported in Aurangabad, 33 in Osmanabad district, 24 in Parbhani districts, 23 each in Jalna and Nanded districts, 22 in Latur district and lowest 18 suicides in Hingoli district, the sources said.
Primary causes of suicides were mounting debt, no adequate return to their farm products, infertility, cotton crop affected by pink bollwrom pest, hailstorm rains, among others.
Despite state government implementing loan waiver schemes in the state, number of farmers committing suicide is increasing continuously across the state. UNI

Aurangabad, Maharashtra, Mar 27: Brasthachar Virodhi Jan Andolan Nyas at holy town of Paithan in Marathwada on Tuesday extended their support to the social crusader and Gandhian Anna Hazare's indefinite strike in Delhi from March 23. 
Reports from Paithan said activists of Nyas began their strike this morning for showing full support to Hazare who launched his indefinite strike at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi.
Other demands include, the Central government implement law of Lokpal and Lokayukata, implementation of Swaminathan Commission report and electoral reforms among others. UNI

Aurangabad, Mahrashtra, Mar 24: Thousands of Muslim women held a rally here on Friday protesting against the Centre's Triple Talaq Bill.
As per the order issued by the Muslim Personal Law Board, the morcha was taken out from AamKhas Maidan to Divisional Commissioner Office in a disciplined manner.
Organising Committee Convenor said the Act was against the provision of right of freedom of expression and religion enshrined in the Indian Constitution and accused the central government of polarising Muslim community.
It was also alleged that the Act was drafted without taking the Muslim Community in confidence.
They said if the bill got passed through the Rajya Sabha, Muslim women could not live with dignity and would have no
freedom.
Some speakers said they wanted to live as per the Muslim Personal Law and the government should not interfere into the matter.
Later, a memorandum was submitted to the Divisional Commissioner. Their main demands were to delete the Para on the Muslim Women from Presidents address to the Parliament, to advise the Central and State Governments not to hurt the sentiments of the second largest community of the country and as it was a defective bill, the bill should be forwarded to Select Committee. UNI

Aurangabad, Maharashtra, Mar 3: The Employees Provident Fund (EPF) authorities has initiated an action against the four companies for non-contribution of Provident Fund (PF) amount of Rs 1.44 crores for several years.
Aurangabad, PF Commissioner M H Warshi said that an action was taken against all the four companies including three firms from Beed and one from Aurangabad after an issuance of arrest warrants. 
The firms include Kada Sugar factory at Aasti, (Rs 53.48 lakhs), Mauli Cooperative Cotton Mill ( Rs 19.21 lakhs) at Kolher in Gevrai taluka and Hotel Pushpagiri (Rs 10.7 lakhs)at Beed.
Mr Warshi further added that two sugar factories from Aurangabad and Beed districts, the properties of which were attached earlier over non-payments of PF will be auctioned on March 12 and 15 respectively. UNI
