Bhubaneswar, Aug 3: A Secondary Data Centre of National Data Repository (NDR) and Software Technology Parks of India-ELITE is all set to be launched here tomorrow that will act as a boon for researchers and companies.

The centre is slated to be inaugurated by Union Petroleum and Skill Development Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Union Electronics and IT and Law and Justice Minister Ravi Sankar Prasad will also be present.

This was announced by senior officials of STPI and Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (DGH) at a press meet here yesterday.

The centre, first of its kind in eastern India and third in the country, would help students of geology and researchers, Manas Ranjan Panda, Jurisdictional Director (Odisha, Bihar and Jharkhand), STPI, Shiladitya Bhattacharjee, General Manager (HR), DGH and H K Patra, Consultant (NDR) said.

The Union government had on June 28, 2017 started functioning of Integrated Centralised Data Repository to promote and preserve the data regarding exploration and production of petroleum products in India.

The Secondary Data Centre (SDC) to be operational at STPI in Bhubaneswar will be operated under Primary Data Centres Disaster Recovery Centre at Noida, New Delhi.

Students of geology, researchers, academicians and companies will be able to conduct data analytics and research based on data available at the centre on exploration and production of petroleum products in India, they said.

The STPI, has three fully operational centres at Bhubaneswar, Rourkela and Berhampur in Odisha and five more such centres will come up at Balasore, Angul, Jajpur, Koraput (Jeypore) and Sambalpur.

STPI ELITE is an additional facility established in Bhubaneswar to further facilitate the IT/ITES industry and boost IT exports.

Kolkata, May 21: A new horizon is opening up in the road construction space in Bengal.
The State Government has decided to use Dutch technology to make stronger roads, entailing longer lifespan, much higher load-bearing capacity and less maintenance.
The cost would be reduced by 20 per cent too.
GeoCrete is a fine white powder consisting of mostly alkaline natural earth elements.
This proprietary chemical would be mixed with a mixture of soil, stone chips and cement to create a concrete layer, on which would be laid a layer of bitumen.
The technology is called ‘GeoCrete soil stabilisation technology’.
Another advantage would be that despite repairs, the height of the roads would not increase as repairs would involve using the same material, just mixed with GeoCrete to strengthen them.
Typically, constant relaying of roads increases their heights, as a result of which a sharp drop opens up from the edges of the roads to the surrounding ground, which causes trouble to motorists.
Another significant fact to mention is that this venture is a direct result of this year’s Bengal Global Business Summit, where a delegation from the Netherlands had offered help in implementing this technology.
The GeoCrete-mixed road-laying process is being used with success in the European Union. UNI

SRINAGAR, MAY 18:  Governor N.N. Vohra, Chancellor of the University of Kashmir, University of Jammu, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology- Kashmir and Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology- Jammu, has authorized revision of salary and pension of Faculty members and non teaching employees of the State Universities w.e.f 1-1-2016, as per the recommendations of the 7th Central Pay Commission. The proposal was submitted to the Governor after obtaining the concurrence of the Chief Minister, who is also the Pro- Chancellor of the State Universities.
The additional annual financial implication of this decision is estimated at Rs. 130 crore and the arrears, for the period 1-1-2016 to 31-3-2018, work out to around Rs. 200 crore, which shall be paid in cash to the employees in three equal yearly installments, on 1-1-2019, 1-1-2020 and 1-1-2021. However, the arrears of the pensioners shall be paid as per the roadmap approved by the State Government.
 Kolkata, May 15 : The World Health Organizatio (WHO) released REPLACE, a step-by-step guide for the elimination of industrially-produced trans-fatty acids from the global food supply.
Eliminating trans fats is key to protecting health and saving lives: WHO estimates that every year, trans fat intake leads to more than 500,000 deaths of people from cardiovascular disease.
Industrially-produced trans fats are contained in hardened vegetable fats, such as margarine and ghee, and are often present in snack food, baked foods, and fried foods. Manufacturers often use them as they have a longer shelf life than other fats. But healthier alternatives can be used that would not affect taste or cost of food, a WHO media statement here on Tuesday said
"WHO calls on governments to use the REPLACE action package to eliminate industrially-produced trans-fatty acids from the food supply,"said WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
"Implementing the six strategic actions in the REPLACE package will help achieve the elimination of trans fat, and represent a major victory in the global fight against cardiovascular disease," he said.
REPLACE provides six strategic actions to ensure the prompt, complete, and sustained elimination of industrially-produced trans fats from the food supply:
Review dietary sources of industrially-produced trans fats and the landscape for required policy change.
Promote the replacement of industrially-produced trans fats with healthier fats and oils.
Legislate or enact regulatory actions to eliminate industrially-produced trans fats.
Assess and monitor trans fats content in the food supply and changes in trans fat consumption in the population.
Create awareness of the negative health impact of trans fats among policy makers, producers, suppliers, and the public.  UNI

Sriharikota, Apr 12: Giving a more fillip to the navigation series, ISRO successfully launched the 1,425 kg satelite IRNSS-1I through its workhorse launch vehicle PSLV-C41 from the spaceport of Sriharikota, early on Thursday.
After the culmination of the 32-hour countdown, the rocket lifted off majestically from the First Launch Pad at 0404 hrs and soared into the skies amid dark skies. UNI


Kolkata, Apr 06: Today plastic waste is considered at the core of environmental pollution and climate change. The amount of trash, that continuous use of plastic, thermocol, and other non-biodegradable materials is piling up, is voluminous and is acting as a slow poison that has been introduced into our systems, be it marine, terrestrial or even our own bodies.
As per recent reports, in India more than 15,000 tons of plastic waste is generated every day, of which 6,000 tons remain uncollected and littered. 
Plastics take over 500 years to start decomposing. The first plastics were only created about 70 years back and hence it is a long time before even the first begin to decompose. If we look at the problem at a global level, we have already created over 8.3 billion tons of plastics (over 50 per cent of that in the last 13 years!). This is equal to over 1 billion elephants in terms of size! 35 per cent of the plastic used is single time use which cannot be recycled. 
While sustainable living is heavily talked about, real-life solutions are conspicuous by their absence. Despite knowing the ill effects, in the absence of options, plastic remains the popular.
Taking cue from this, around four years ago, Yash Papers decided to introduce change by manufacturing bio-degradable packaging to replace paper that was plastic-coated, laminated, or cellophane covered paper, used in packaging, especially food. 
As plastic is both hazardous to health and the environment, the company decided to start Chuk, with a special focus on bio-degradable packaging. 
"Plastics, Styrofoam or even melamine might be cheaper and popular choice by price but in the long run they might be a major cause of medical bills since they are carcinogenic and leach harmful chemicals when food is heated in them or hot food served.Strong measures should also be taken to ban products like Styrofoam which are carcinogenic in nature. By eating from tableware or containers made from this material, carcinogens make way into our body without realizing it," says Mr Ved Krishna, Head of Strategy at Yash Papers.
In due course, the company also decided to foray into biodegradable tableware products made out of bagasse. Currently, bowls, plates, compartment trays, and containers of 500 ml and 750 ml capacity are available in the market and there are also plans to launch soup bowls and sandwich boxes.
So, what makes Chuk products different from the ordinary disposable tableware? Mr Krishna replies, "Chuk tableware products are made from sugarcane waste called Bagasse, a renewable source, which is left over after sugarcane stalks are crushed to extract the juice."
Chuk products are also 100 per cent compostable and decompose within months in backyard compostable systems, claims Krishna.
"Chuk products are not treated with any kind of chemical agents, so when they decompose after usage they do not emit harmful gases or leave behind chemicals, hence have no adverse effect on the environment. In fact, the products when manufactured are also made in a sustainable way."
"It’s like food if cows were to ingest it," Krishna says on a lighter note. 
The environment-friendly tableware has been priced competitively, ranging from Rs 1 to Rs 7 which is cheaper than decent quality plastic.
Chuk products are extremely convenient, as bagasse pulp makes products lightweight for ease in handling, flexible to protect from damage, and strong to prevent spillage and also makes them suitable for use in microwave ovens to heat food, he explains.
"We also have done a lot of research on the eating habits of people to come up with a more user-friendly design to cater to specific needs. That led us to being modular. We based our designs on Lego where one piece fits into another which is also fun to use for end consumers. Thus we created bowls that fit into trays and containers. We have 9 products at the moment and their designs are very specific which are unique to our brand," he adds.
Already available across the country, in cities like Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Delhi, Jaipur, Dehradun, the company is working on penetrating into smaller towns and cities to spread awareness and build dealer network. 
Chuk is also available in countries like Dubai, Italy, Singapore, Australia, Sri Lanka Turkey and Netherlands. 
As of now, the Chuk products are sold through select dealers in India and abroad, but soon, the brand will hit the retail market by entering tie-ups with the popular brands to make our tableware more available to end user.
While the non-stop use of plastic is almost drowning us in an ocean of trash, government rules to curb its use remain inadequate. "Unfortunately, whatever rules that are in place by the government are not stringent enough for the people to take them seriously." Krishna points out.
The company in its bid to push its products is also looking to do tie-ups with Government organizations to spread awareness and help save the environment. Recently, a trial run of Chuk products was done with the Indian Railways and the company is looking forward to a concrete tie-up with the national carrier. UNI


Kolkata, Mar 19: Snake bite is a neglected public health issue in many tropical and subtropical countries.
Though the exact number of snake bites is unknown, an estimated 5.4 million people are bitten each year with up to 2.7 million cases of envenoming (poisoning from snake bites). Around 81 000 to 138 000 people die each year as a result of snake bites, and around three times as many amputations and other permanent disabilities are caused by snakebites annually.
Most of these occur in Africa, Asia and Latin America. In Asia up to 2 million people are envenomed by snakes each year, while in Africa there are an estimated 435 000 to 580 000 snake bites annually that need treatment, a WHO statement said.
Envenoming affects women, children and farmers in poor rural communities in low- and middle-income countries. The highest burden occurs in countries where health systems are weakest and medical resources sparse.
Bites by venomous snakes can cause acute medical emergencies involving severe paralysis that may prevent breathing, cause bleeding disorders that can lead to fatal haemorrhage, cause irreversible kidney failure and severe local tissue destruction that can cause permanent disability and limb amputation.
Children may suffer more severe effects, and can experience the effects more quickly than adults due to their smaller body mass.
In contrast to many other serious health conditions, a highly effective treatment exists. Most deaths and serious consequences from snake bites are entirely preventable by making safe and effective antivenoms more widely available and accessible. UNI


Kolkata, Mar 15: Tracking progress to eliminate tuberculosis, Member countries of WHO South-East Asia Region has committed to further intensifying efforts to ensure rapid and concrete progress to End TB by 2030.
In a statement adopted at the Delhi End TB Summit, member countries unanimously agreed to actualizing and intensifying essential actions agreed to in the Delhi Call to Action which was adopted in March last year to accelerate efforts to End TB in the Region, host to one fourth of the global population but a disproportionate 46 per cent of the global TB burden.
“Progress against TB in this Region will have a major impact on the progress globally,” Director-General, World Health Organization Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a statement.
“Too much is at stake, we cannot afford to fail. We must remember that the war against TB will be won in communities. It will be won by nurses, doctors, community health workers and others at the frontlines. We must give them the resources they need to find every last person with TB, to diagnose them, to treat them, and to cure them,” he said.
Welcoming the statement, Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh, Regional Director for WHO South-East Asia, said, “it gives shape to our momentum and aspirations, and does so by setting out a series of strategic priorities which include establishing strong leadership of TB programmes at the national level; increasing budgetary and human resource allocations to TB programmes from domestic and global sources; enabling each and every TB patient to access the best possible care available; and supplementing medical care for TB with social and financial protection.”
Reviewing efforts being made to end TB since the adoption of the Delhi Call for Action on 16 March 2017, Member countries noted that though efforts have been strengthened with increased attention, investments and initiatives; the stepped-up response was falling short of what was required to reach the critical thresholds for ending TB.
The Member countries of the Region stressed their firm intent to collectively reach out to 2 million missing TB cases and 150 000 multidrug-resistance cases by 2020 and implement a response that is demonstrably adequate for ending TB.
In the statement, the countries committed to multisectoral and empowered national initiatives, reporting to the highest levels of government, to lead the TB programme. UNI


Kolkata, Mar 13: Foodborne listeriosis is one of the most serious and severe foodborne diseases. 
It is caused by the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes. It is a relatively rare disease with 0.1 to 10 cases per 1 million people per year depending on the countries and regions of the world. 
Although the number of cases of listeriosis is small, the high rate of death associated with this infection makes it a significant public health concern.
Unlike many other common foodborne diseases causing bacteria, L. monocytogenes can survive and multiply at low temperatures usually found in refrigerators. 
Eating contaminated food with high numbers of L. monocytogenes is the main route of infection. Infection can also be transmitted between humans, notably from pregnant women to unborn babies.
L monocytogenes are ubiquitous in nature and found in soil, water and animal digestive tracts. Vegetables may be contaminated through soil or the use of manure as fertilizer. 
Ready-to-eat food can also become contaminated during processing and the bacteria can multiply to dangerous levels during distribution and storage.
Food most often associated with listeriosis include: foods with a long shelf-life under refrigeration (L. monocytogenes can grow to significant numbers in food at refrigeration temperatures when given sufficient time) and foods that are consumed without further treatment, such as cooking, which would otherwise kill L monocytogenes.
In past outbreaks, foods involved included ready-to-eat meat products, such as frankfurters, meat spread (pate), smoked salmon and fermented raw meat sausages, 
as well as dairy products (including soft cheeses, unpasteurized milk and ice cream) and prepared salads (including coleslaw and bean sprouts) as well as fresh vegetables and fruits. UNI



Kolkata, Mar 6: Taeniasis is an intestinal infection caused by 3 species of tapeworms - Taenia solium (pork tapeworm), Taenia saginata (beef tapeworm) and Taenia asiatica.
Humans can become infected with T. saginata or T. asiatica when they consume infected beef meat or pig liver tissue, respectively, which has not been adequately cooked, but taeniasis due toT. saginata or T. asiatica has no major impact on human health. Therefore, this factsheets refers to the transmission and health impacts of T. solium only.
Infection with the T. solium tapeworm occurs when humans eat raw or undercooked, infected pork. Tapeworm eggs pass with the faeces and are infective for pigs. Infection in humans with the T. solium tapeworm causes few clinical symptoms.
However as well as being infective for pigs, T. solium eggs may also infect humans if they are ingested, causing infection with the larval parasite in the tissues (human cysticercosis). This infection can result in devastating effects on human health. The larvae (cysticerci) may develop in the muscles, skin, eyes and the central nervous system. When cysts develop in the brain, the condition is referred to as neurocysticercosis.
Symptoms include severe headache, blindness, convulsions, and epileptic seizures, and can be fatal. Neurocysticercosis is the most frequent preventable cause of epilepsy worldwide, and is estimated to cause 30% of all epilepsy cases in in countries where the parasite is endemic.
Cysticercosis mainly affects the health and livelihoods of subsistence farming communities in developing countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America. It also reduces the market value of pigs and cattle, and makes pork unsafe to eat.
In 2015, the WHO Foodborne Disease Burden Epidemiology Reference Group identified T. solium as a leading cause of deaths from food-borne diseases, resulting in a considerable total of 2.8 million disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs).
The total number of people suffering from neurocysticercosis, including symptomatic and asymptomatic cases, is estimated to be between 2.56–8.30 million, based on the range of epilepsy prevalence data available. UNI


Kolkata, Mar 3: Some 900 million people could suffer from disabling hearing loss by 2050, according to new estimates released by the World Health Organisation (WHO) on the occasion of World Hearing Day today.
World Hearing Day is an annual advocacy event held on March 3. It aims to raise awareness and promote ear and hearing care across the world. The theme for World Hearing Day 2018 is Hear the future.
Currently 466 million people worldwide suffer from disabling hearing loss, 34 million of whom are children. This is up from 360 million people five years ago.
The main reasons for this increase is a growing ageing population and the persistence of risks such as ear and vaccine-preventable infections like measles, mumps and rubella; the use of medicines that can harm hearing such as those used to treat drug-resistant tuberculosis and malaria; and exposure to loud sounds through personal audio devices and in entertainment venues and workplaces.
“Past trends and future projections predict a vast increase in the number of people with hearing loss,” said Dr Etienne Krug, Director of the WHO Department for Management of Noncommunicable Diseases, Disability, Violence and Injury Prevention.
“Unless appropriate action is initiated, nearly one in 10 people could have disabling hearing loss by 2050. This will considerably affect their lives and pose a significant cost to health systems. Governments must act now to prevent this rise and ensure people with hearing loss can access the services and technologies they need,” Dr Krug said.
Disabling hearing loss affects people in many ways. It impacts on a person’s ability to communicate, socialize, learn, work and enjoy life, contributing to poverty, social isolation and feelings of loneliness.
In older people in particular, hearing loss is linked to cognitive decline, increasing the risk of depression and dementia. Unaddressed hearing loss costs countries an estimated US$ 750 billion annually in direct health costs and loss of productivity. UNI

JAMMU,   FEBRUARY 19: Minister for Education Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari and Minister of state for Education and culture, Priya Sethi today held marathon interaction with the Engineering students drawn from state and outside state Engineering colleges here at the 5th National Conference & Exhibition on Engineering and Innovative Trends in Engineering Technology(NCEEITET) hosted jointly by the Government College of Engineering and Technology, Jammu and Indian Institute of Technology(ITI) Kharagpur.
Altaf Bukhari was chief Guest, while Priya Sethi was guest of honour at the inaugural session of the two-day conference, which was also attended by delegates of public sector and private agencies, associated with technological development and Energy generation and other fields of engineering, besides representatives of Industrial Sector.
 At the outset, Senior faculty IIT Kharagpur Prof SS Phatak, ATM Power Grid Corporation of India Shafat Ahmed and EESL   representative Manu Mudgul threw detailed light on the rising need of innovation in different streams of Engineering and scope for young Engineers to use their innovations.
Earlier in his inaugural address, Altaf Bukhari highlighted the importance of grooming of J&K youth in modern fields to compensate the loss incurred by the state over 25 years of turmoil. There is imminent need for putting in extraordinary efforts to promote the young and fertile minds to enable the state to keep pace with the technological advance, he said adding that the state needs improvement on every front and the onus lies on the new generation.   
“Education sector has borne the maximum burnt of the turmoil and only education advancement can bring out the state from the prevailing morass” he said.  
In her address, Priya Sethi urged the budding engineers to use their abilities to improve the life of common man.
“As per a study the country has 1.5 billion young technocrats who are putting in their abilities to enable the country to achieve new heights in technology. I think their efforts should be directed towards improving the day to day living of the masses” she said and listed the steps being taken by the state and centre government towards skill advancement of youth.  
Meanwhile, the Students of GCET, Engineering Colleges of Baba Ghulam Shah Badsha University, Shri Mata Vaishnoo Devi University and various private Engineering colleges had put up their innovative scientific models at the exhibition. The Ministers held detailed interaction with the students to know about their models and innovative ideas.
Member Legislative Assembly Tangmarg Kashmir, Abas Wani, Director School Education Jammu, Ravinder Singh, Nodal Principal GGM Science College, Satinder Singh were also present on the occasion.
The Power Grid Corporation of India, Jammu and Kashmir Power Development Corporation, Defence Science and Technology Organization, Jammu and Kashmir Energy Development Agency(JKEDA), National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology (NIELIT) and some private companies had put up their stalls to intimate the budding engineers about their field and its requirements in terms of innovation.

Kolkata, Feb 19: Musculoskeletal conditions are the second largest contributor to disability worldwide, with lower back pain being the single leading cause of disability globally.
Musculoskeletal conditions and injuries are not just conditions of older age – they are relevant across the life-course. Between one in three and one in five people live with a painful and disabling musculoskeletal condition.
Musculoskeletal conditions comprise more than 150 diagnoses that affect the locomotor system – that is, muscles, bones, joints and associated tissues such as tendons and ligaments, as listed in the International Classification of Diseases. They range from those that arise suddenly and are short-lived, such as fractures, sprains and strains; to lifelong conditions associated with ongoing pain and disability.
Musculoskeletal conditions are typically characterised by pain (often persistent pain) and limitations in mobility, dexterity and functional ability, reducing people’s ability to work and participate in social roles with associated impacts on mental wellbeing, and at a broader level impacts on the prosperity of communities.
The most common and disabling musculoskeletal conditions are osteoarthritis, back and neck pain, fractures associated with bone fragility, injuries and systemic inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.
Musculoskeletal conditions include conditions that affect: joints, such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, gout, ankylosing spondylitis; bones, such as osteoporosis, osteopenia and associated fragility fractures, traumatic fractures; muscles, such as sarcopenia; the spine, such as back and neck pain; multiple body areas or systems, such as regional and widespread pain disorders and inflammatory diseases such as connective tissue diseases and vasculitis that have musculoskeletal manifestations, for example systemic lupus erythematosus.
Musculoskeletal conditions are prevalent across the life-course and most commonly affect people from adolescence through to older age. The prevalence and impact of musculoskeletal conditions is predicted to rise as the global population ages and the prevalence of risk factors for noncommunicable diseases increases, particularly in low- and middle-income settings. UNI



Srinagar, Feb 17: The department of Urology and Kidney Transplant Unit (KTU) at the Sher-I-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) has successfully conducted record 250 kidney transplants till date, making it at par with any other centre in the country, an officiual of the institute said here on Saturday.
According to Saleem Wani, Head of the Department (HoD) in Urology, renal transplantation has increased patient survival and it is in this context that SKIMS, Soura Srinagar took a lead in human organ transplantation in the state and Kidney Transplantation programme was established in SKIMS in 1999. 
The Institute was authorised to carry Renal Transplantation in 1999 as per the J&K Transplantation of the Human Organ Act 1997 and is the only centre in the state authorised to do kidney transplantation. 
SKIMS being the apex institution of the state, not only accepts patients from the state, but also from the neighbouring states of the country, thereby providing an opportunity to the people with such ailments to avail
better quality treatment with lower costs than the corporate hospitals, he explained.
Dr Wani lauded the administration for its continuous support and said that to start with, SKIMS had only two bedded Transplant unit which has been upgraded to 12 bed unit.
He hoped that separate Nepro-Urosciences hospital will be established as proposal for same has been submitted to the administration for consideration, so that cadaver transplant programme can also be started.
However, he said there is a huge gap between availability and demand of the organs for transplantation. The future of solid organ transplantation is the Cadaver transplantation and the public needs to be made aware of the concept of Brain death. 
Fatal road accidents leading to brain death is on the rise and there is potential for huge Brain dead Donors. The number of fatal road accidents every year in the country is 85000 and on an average there are 8-10 brain dead patients every day in ICUs in major cities, he added.
Dr Wani insisted that awareness in Medical fraternity and community at large is required for the success of the program. It is awareness programs in the form of Continued Medical Education (CME’s), public meetings, awareness through print and electronic media which created positive attitude among masses and lead to Husbands donating to Wives, Unmarried sisters donating for their sisters and brothers, Unmarried
daughters donating for their fathers, Brothers donating for their sisters and Pediatric transplant.
Director SKIMS appreciated the department for running the program successfully and alleviating the problems of poor patients. He said the
excellent outcome of the transplant program is the result of untiring efforts of the dedicated and committed team of Transplant Surgeons, Transplant Nephrologists, Transplant Anesthesiologists, Immunologists besides highly trained OT and KTU nursing team.
