Srinagar, Apr 11 :  The Principal SKIMS Bemina (JVC) Dr. Reyaz A. Untoo on Saturday commissioned oxygen concentration plant with a capacity of 750Lpm to provide better care for COVID-19 patients in the hospital.

At present, 31 COVID-19 positive patients are receiving treatment in the hospital.

Speaking on the occasion, the Principal said that the work on the plant which has a standby compressor and dryer, was expedited for the better functioning of the designated Covid hospital at SKIMS, Bemina.

Besides, the Principal said that the plant can run 6 to 10 more ventilators over and above the existing four.

He stated that it will also help in increasing the bed strength from existing 20 to 80 to 174.

The Principal appreciated the efforts of Engineering Wing and Coordinator SKIMS Medical College in upgrading the infrastructural facilities required to upgrade SKIMS Bemina into a full-fledged COVID-19 hospital.

He complimented doctor, nurses, paramedical and other supportive staff for putting their best efforts in the management of COVID-19 patients.

Besides thanking Director SKIMS for providing necessary support, the Principal also thanked district administration, Srinagar for providing comfortable accommodation and other assistance.

Srinagar, Mar 29 :  Director, Shere-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Soura, Dr AG Ahanger today appealed to people not to pay heed to unverified reports attributed to him on the social media regarding the spread of Coronavirus in Jammu and Kashmir 

A message, which is being circulated on social networking sites attributing Director SKIMS to have said that corona cases in Kashmir would increase and followed by decline.

The Director SKIMS in an official statement issued here said that this message is sheer imagination and has not been communicated by the Director himself or his office.

The senior faculty and the senior residents of Department of Radiation Oncology, SKIMS would be available 24x7 for consultation on the following dedicated number 9697863173.

Head, Department of Radiation Oncology, SKIMS, Prof Muhammad Maqbool Lone said, "we have created elaborative measures as far as the cancer patients are concerned.” He said that amid the health advisories, the department would also provide round the clock consultations to the cancer patients of Jammu and Kashmir on the dedicated phone number.

It may be recalled that more than 5700 cancer cases have been recorded in hospitals across Kashmir in 2019 with figures revealing that the incidence is on a rise in the Valley.

The data maintained by the Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) at SKIMS Soura reveals that it registered 4000 fresh cancer cases in the previous year.

SRINAGAR, JULY 11: Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Baseer Ahmad Khan today convened a meeting to review all issues related to land owners which are displaced due to the establishment of AIIMS at Awantipora, Pulwama.
The meeting was informed that the total quantum of land for the establishment of AIIMS is 1772 kanals and five marlas. The construction of the outer wall is going on however the land owners are requesting compensation on the analogy of SKIMS Srinagar, Rakh-e-Arth Bemina and rehabilitation by way providing shops and reservation in employment as per the analogy adopted by the Railways department.
After threadbare discussion, the forum sought a detailed report in this regard which would be submitted to the State Government for consideration.
Special Secretary Revenue, District Development Commissioner Pulwama, Regional Director Settlement and Land Records, Assistant Director Health Services, Assistant Commissioner and other concerned officers were present in this meeting.

Process on to rehabilitate people living along banks of the river
SRINAGAR, JUNE 13: Minister for Finance and Labour & Employment, Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari, Wednesday said the process is on to rehabilitate the people living along the banks of river Jhelum so that banks can be freed from encroachments once for all.
Minister said this while reviewing the relocation process of the people living along the banks of River Jhelum. He said the work is in progress on war footing basis to give a one-time relief to the people living along banks of river Jhelum in Srinagar so that banks can be beautified and strengthened later to avert any tragedy in future.
He directed the officers to ensure that no structure come up on either side of the banks of river Jhelum after the dwellers are rehabilitated properly.
On the occasion, Bukhari directed the Department of Irrigation and Flood Control to complete the left out work of land filling at Bemina By-pass near SKIMS within 15 days and asked the Vice-Chairman SDA to ensure that the plots for beneficiaries are demarcated within a weeks' time after the land filling is completed.
He said the families living along Jhelum in Srinagar city and the families living in houseboats will be relocated to the identified plots at Bemina and the possession of these plots shall be given to the identified families at earliest. He directed officials to expedite the process so that families can be relocated on time.
It was decided in the meeting that the Sub-Committee already constituted for verification of details of the left-over families of river Jhelum shall verify the list of beneficiaries by the end of this month for further processing.
Bukhari also directed the Srinagar Development Authority to obtain an estimate of the requirement of basic amenities including road, water, power from the line departments for the plots located at Gund-e-Aksha.
With regard to the rehabilitation of the families living along Jhelum in Batamaloo and Eidgah constituencies, Minister was informed that 160 kanals have already been identified at Rakh-e-Gund-Aksha and process is on to relocate the families.
The meeting was attended by MLA Batamaloo Noor Mohammad, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Baseer Ahmad Khan, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Dr. Syed Abid Rasheed Shah, VC LAWDA, VC Srinagar Development Authority, Ex'xen Irrigation and Flood Control, other senior officials and members of affected families.

Srinagar, Jun 2: A youth who was allegedly hit by a security forces' vehicle during Friday clashes in the northern Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir died at a hospital here, police said on Saturday
Kaiser Bhat (21), a resident of the Fatehkadal area of the city, was injured when the security forces' vehicle allegedly hit him and another youth during the protests in the Nowhatta area here on Friday
Both the injured were taken to the SKIMS hospital at Soura where Bhat succumbed to his injuries
"He succumbed to his injuries at the hospital around midnight," a police official said
After the Friday prayers culminated at the historic Jamia Masjid in Nowhatta, a group of youth started pelting stones on the security forces, he said
A few protestors attacked a vehicle of the security forces which hit two of them, leaving them injured, the official said. (PTI)

Srinagar, Apr 28:  An SSB constable was injured when he allegedly attempted to commit suicide in a camp at Pattan in north Kashmir district of Baramulla, official sources said on Saturday.
Panic gripped SSB camp at Babateang, Pattan, when a firing sound was heard from a room. Security forces present in the area immediately rushed there and found constable Amreet Singh lying in a pool of blood late Friday night.
He was immediately rushed to hospital from where he was referred to S K Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS).
Sources said Singh has reportedly attempted suicide. A case has been registered investigation started. UNI

Srinagar, Apr 5: Ignoring security concerns expressed by agencies, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday visited very tense Kangan in central district of Ganderbal and met family of Gowhar Ahmad Rather who succumbed to bullet and pellet injuries in a hospital on Tuesday.
Rather was injured when police allegedly fired bullets and pellets to disperse demonstrators on Monday, who were protesting against the killings of four civilians in security force action on protesters, who hit the streets after 13 militants, including some top commanders, were killed in three different encounters in Shopian on Sunday.
Despite slogan shouting and tense situation, Ms Mehbooba arrived at Kangan this morning and met the family members of the deceased youth.
During about half-an-hour stay with the bereaved family--his parents, brother and sister, she assured that police personnel involved in the killing of Rather will be punished as per law of the land. Terming the death 'very unfortunate', she said justice will be done in the case. 
After initially denying that Rather was injured in police action, a Selection Grade (SG) constable was suspended and later detained in this connection. Police through social media and press releases maintained that Rather fell down during a chase by police and got injured after hitting edge of a drain. However, locals alleged that he was injured after police fired bullets and pellets.
Later medical report also confirmed that Rather, who breathed his last in S K Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) that he had received bullet and pellet injuries in the head.
District Magistrate (DM), Ganderbal has already ordered a magisterial inquiry and appointed Additional Deputy Commissioner (DC) to investigate the incident and report within 20 days. UNI

Srinagar, Apr 2: Curfew-like restrictions have been imposed in the Shehar-e-Khas (SeK), downtown and parts of old city and civil lines in Srinagar as precautionary measure to prevent any law and order problem.
The restrictions were imposed as precautionary measure following a strike call given by separatists in protest against killing of four civilians in security force action and 13 militants in three separate encounters in south Kashmir on Sunday. Three Army jawans were martyred in the encounters. Over 50 civilians were also injured in the clashes near the encounter sites. 
The main gates of historic Jamia Masjid, stronghold of chairman of moderate Hurriyat Conference (HC), Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq, have been closed to foil any demonstration.
Police said restrictions under section 144 CrPC have been imposed in the areas falling under the jurisdiction of police station M R Gunj, Nowhatta, Safa Kadal, Khanyar and Rainwari in the downtown and SeK. Restrictions have also been imposed in parts of areas under police station of Maisuma in civil lines and Kralkhud in old city.
However, the situation on the ground was entirely different as security forces and state police personnel deployed in the downtown and SeK were directing people to remain indoors. The entire Nallahmar road, which otherwise remains busy, has been closed for traffic or pedestrian movement. Security forces have closed the road with barbed wire and by parking bullet proof vehicles in the middle at different places, including Tarabal, Nawa Kadal, Kawdara, Rajouri Kadal, Ali Kadal and Khanyar.
People in these areas alleged that they were not being allowed to move out of their houses by the security forces deployed after every ten feet. “The milkmen and vegetable sellers could not come from outskirts due to restrictions. The local bread makers also could not open their shops,” Mutahir Ahmad, a resident of Nawa Kadal told.
The road to S K Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) from Safa Kadal and Eidgah was open though medical staff and patients only were being allowed to move.
All roads leading to Jamia Masjid were closed at Rangar stop, Nowhatta and Hawal to prevent people from assembling and organise protests at worship place. All main gates of the Masjid remained closed since this morning. Similar restrictions had been imposed in other areas of down town and SeK.
Roads leading to Maisuma, stronghold of JKLF, have also been closed and hundreds of security forces personnel deployed in the area to strictly implement restrictions.
Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), comprising Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik, has called for a strike on Monday against the killing of civilians and militants. UNI

Srinagar, Mar 31: Unidentified gunmen shot at and critically wounded a Special Police Officer (SPO) of Jammu and Kashmir police in south Kashmir district of Anantnag on Saturday, official sources said.
They said the gunmen fired at and wounded SPO from a very close range at K P Road, Khannabal, in Anantnag. 
The injured was immediately rushed to District Hospital, they said, adding that the area has been cordoned off and a massive hunt has been launched to nab the attackers.
Recently, militants barged into the house of a SPO and shot him dead while his wife was critically injured. She was admitted to S K Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS). UNI

Srinagar, Mar 30: A militant of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) was admitted to a Srinagar hospital with a bullet wound, a police spokesman said on Friday.
He said police authorities have learnt that one Asif Ashraf Malik, son of Ashraf Malik, resident of Krawoora Shopian was admitted in S K Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura Srinagar with a bullet wound. Asif was active since 19-10-2017 with HM outfit, he said.
He said the injured has been given required medical treatment in the hospital.
Spokesman said preliminary investigation suggests that he was injured in the incident of Thursday at Ahgam where militants, travelling in a car opened fire on an Army patrol. Troops also retaliated but the militants managed to escape after leaving the car there.
The medical bulletin of the injured is yet to be received, he said adding Police is investigating the matter. UNI

Srinagar, Feb 17: The department of Urology and Kidney Transplant Unit (KTU) at the Sher-I-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) has successfully conducted record 250 kidney transplants till date, making it at par with any other centre in the country, an officiual of the institute said here on Saturday.
According to Saleem Wani, Head of the Department (HoD) in Urology, renal transplantation has increased patient survival and it is in this context that SKIMS, Soura Srinagar took a lead in human organ transplantation in the state and Kidney Transplantation programme was established in SKIMS in 1999. 
The Institute was authorised to carry Renal Transplantation in 1999 as per the J&K Transplantation of the Human Organ Act 1997 and is the only centre in the state authorised to do kidney transplantation. 
SKIMS being the apex institution of the state, not only accepts patients from the state, but also from the neighbouring states of the country, thereby providing an opportunity to the people with such ailments to avail
better quality treatment with lower costs than the corporate hospitals, he explained.
Dr Wani lauded the administration for its continuous support and said that to start with, SKIMS had only two bedded Transplant unit which has been upgraded to 12 bed unit.
He hoped that separate Nepro-Urosciences hospital will be established as proposal for same has been submitted to the administration for consideration, so that cadaver transplant programme can also be started.
However, he said there is a huge gap between availability and demand of the organs for transplantation. The future of solid organ transplantation is the Cadaver transplantation and the public needs to be made aware of the concept of Brain death. 
Fatal road accidents leading to brain death is on the rise and there is potential for huge Brain dead Donors. The number of fatal road accidents every year in the country is 85000 and on an average there are 8-10 brain dead patients every day in ICUs in major cities, he added.
Dr Wani insisted that awareness in Medical fraternity and community at large is required for the success of the program. It is awareness programs in the form of Continued Medical Education (CME’s), public meetings, awareness through print and electronic media which created positive attitude among masses and lead to Husbands donating to Wives, Unmarried sisters donating for their sisters and brothers, Unmarried
daughters donating for their fathers, Brothers donating for their sisters and Pediatric transplant.
Director SKIMS appreciated the department for running the program successfully and alleviating the problems of poor patients. He said the
excellent outcome of the transplant program is the result of untiring efforts of the dedicated and committed team of Transplant Surgeons, Transplant Nephrologists, Transplant Anesthesiologists, Immunologists besides highly trained OT and KTU nursing team.
It is important to mention Kidney failure is a major public health problem worldwide and the Incidence and prevalence is on rise. CKD is a common, harmful &treatable disease. Causes of kidney failure are Diabetes, Hypertension, Glomerulonephritis, Polycystic kidney disease and pain killer abuse.
Organ transplantation saves lives in patients affected by terminal organ failures and improves quality of life. Organ transplantation has gradually taken centre stage in treatment of end stage organ failure and provides excellent results in children and young adults. Solid organ transplantation programme activities have steadily grown in last two decades and is essential for developed and mature health care systems. Life- saving transplants are indispensable to treat patients with kidney, liver, heart or lung end stage diseases.

JAMMU, JANUARY 23: The Government today constituted a high level committee headed by Finance Minister, Dr Haseeb Drabu to monitor the functioning of Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura.
The members of the committee include Dr Pawan Kotwal, Principal Secretary to the Government, Health and Medical Education Department, Prof Samia Rashid, Principal Government Medical College Srinagar, Dr Omar Javid Shah, Director SKIMS and Dr Ghulam Nabi Yatoo, Professor and Head Department of Gastroenterology SKIMS.

According to a Government Order issued in this regard, the Committee would recommend measures to be taken from time to time to improve overall functioning of the institute. The Committee would also concretize the steps for appointment of full-time director for SKIMS.

Several measures taken to deal with drug menace in JK
JAMMU, JANUARY 18:– Minister for Health & Medical Education Bali Bhagat today informed that a high-end Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Scan machine worth Rs 23 crore has been made operational in SKIMS, Soura on January 7 this year for the convenience of cancer patients, adding that PET-Scan is a machine that is used to detect cancerous tissues and cells in body.
The Minister while replying to a question of legislator Saif-ud-Din Bhat and supplementary question by legislators Qaiser  Jamsheed Lone and Vibod Gupta informed that the Union Government has sanctioned Rs 120 crore for establishment of two State Level Cancer Institute’s one each in Jammu and Srinagar. He further informed that it has also sanctioned Rs 45 crore for establishment of 3 District Level Cancer Centres at Kishtwar, Udhampur and Kupwara Districts. 
The Minister informed that the Union Government has launched several schemes to extend financial assistance for treatment of cancer patients, adding that there is need to sensitize the masses about these schemes.
Replying to main question, Bali Bhagat informed the House that around 5731 patients suffering from cancer have been registered during 2017 in the state.  He further informed that tobacco, poor personal hygiene, unsanitary living conditions, low immunity, consumption of adulterated food, fruits and vegetables laden with pesticides, environmental pollutions are the major risk factor for cancers besides breast and colon cancer are increasing due to change in lifestyle, late age at first child birth; obesity, fatty diet low in fiber, increased consumption of red meat and sedentary life style are the main causes contributing in this life consuming disease.
          “Change in dietary habits and life style are the main reasons of increasing in diabetes mellitus type-2”, he informed.
While replying to club question of legislators Ramesh Arora, Qaiser Jamsheed Lone and Ajatshatru Singh, the Minister informed that 888 cases were registered while 1213 persons were arrested under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Ordinance/Excise Act in the State during 2017. Several measures have been taken to tackle with the menace of drug in the state which includes conduct of frequent raids around the educational institutions and surprise nakas to nab the persons involved in smuggling of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances.
120 bedded Government Psychiatric Hospital at Jammu with separate male, female and emergency patients ward has been made functional during 2015, the Minister further informed.   
The Minister, while replying to a question of legislator Ashok Khajuria, informed that the total number of vacant posts in Gazetted and Non-Gazetted cadres including doctors and paramedics are 579 and 1817 respectively. These vacancies have been referred to concerned recruiting agencies for selection of candidates, he added.

Bali Bhagat said that the department is making every effort to augment the staff strength by appointing doctors and paramedical staff on contractual and academic arrangement basis in Medical Colleges and various health institutions in the state.

Srinagar, Jan 13: Authorities on Saturday imposed curfew-like restrictions in downtown and Shehar-e-Khas (SeK) besides parts of civil lines in Srinagar to prevent any demonstrations following strike called by separatists against the civilian deaths, allegedly in security force actions in the Kashmir valley.
The main gates of historic Jamia Masjid, the stronghold of moderate Hurriyat Conference (HC) chairman Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq, have been closed to prevent devotees from going inside. The Mirwaiz remained under house arrest since last evening to prevent him from leading any demonstration.
Police said that restrictions have been imposed in the SeK and downtown areas falling under the jurisdiction of police station M R Gunj, Nowhatta, Safa Kadal, Khanyar and Rainawari. Similar restrictions had been imposed in some areas under police station Maisuma in the civil lines and Kralkhud in the old city. Police said there was no restriction on government employees and essential services.
However, the situation on the ground was entirely different as all main and link roads remained closed with barbed wire and by parking bulletproof vehicles in the middle to prevent any vehicular and pedestrian movement. Large number of security forces and state police personnel, remained deployed in strength to implement the restrictions.
The main Nallahmar road from Nawa Kadal to Khanyar crossing had been closed at several places with barbed wire. Residents on both sides of the busy road alleged that they were not being allowed to move out of their houses by the security forces deployed after every feet. 
The vegetable vendors and milkmen were also not allowed to enter the restricted areas, they said and alleged that local bread makers also could not open their shops because of restrictions. However, the Safa Kadal road to S K Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) was open but only patients and paramedical staff besides ambulances were being allowed.
Similar situation was also witnessed in other areas, including Nowhatta, Malaratta and other areas. All roads leading to Jamia Masjid have been closed and nobody was being allowed to go towards the worship place, where the Mirwaiz addressed the Friday congregation yesterday. UNI

JAMMU, NOVEMBER 22: As a part of department-wise pre-budget discussions, Principal Secretary Finance, Navin Kumar Choudhary, today discussed budget proposals of Health & Medical Education, PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control Departments with the concerned officers.
Principal Secretary Health & Medical Education Dr. Pawan Kotwal, Secretary PHE, I&FC, M Raju, Director SKIMS Dr A G Ahangar, Director Budget Imtiyaz Ahmad and other senior officers of the concerned Departments were present at the meeting.
The Principal Secretary Finance started department-wise budget discussions here on November 7 in run up to the formulation of the State Budget 2018-19.
Speaking at the meeting, the Principal Secretary Finance asked these Departments to ensure judicious and productive use of funds for developmental and other welfare initiatives.

Pertinently, the State Government has started presenting the budget in advance in the month of January to ensure timely release of resources for development initiatives in the State.

MLA Batamaloo donates ambulance to SKIMS Hospital, Bemina


SRINAGAR, NOVEMBER 20: The Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology of SKIMS Medical College & Hospital, Bemina today organised a CME (CSEP and a Live Operative Workshop) on Endometriosis demonstrating the live surgeries.
The workshop was inaugurated by Minister for Health & Medical Education, Bali Baghat, who was Chief Guest on the occasion. MLA Batamaloo, Noor Mohammad Sheikh, Director Health Services Kashmir, Dr Saleem-ur-Rehman, Director SKIMS, Prof. A.G Ahanger, Vice Chairman, Selection Committee, SKIMS, Prof M.S Khuroo, Principals SKIMS Medical College and Hospital Bemina, Prof. Riyaz Ahmad Untoo, Dean Academics, SKIMS, Prof. Altaf Kirmani, Organizing Chairperson, ENDOCON 2017, Prof. Rifat Ara were also present on the occasion.
Experts from outside State which include Dr B.B Dash and Dr. Ajay Wakhloo demonstrated the live surgeries.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister stated that the Government has taken measures to strengthen the medical education and health care institutions of the State. He complimented the Principal, Dr. ReyazUntoo for his tireless efforts and putting the SKIMS Medical College on fast track development and assured full support from the Government for the development of SKIMS Medical College, Bemina.
Bhagat said that it is his dream to see SKIMS Medical College as a top-notch College in the State. He said efforts are being put in to amalgamate the newly constructed 250-bedded Maternity & Child Care Hospital with SKIMS Medical College-Hospital, Bemina which will enhance its overall functioning.
On the occasion, MLA Batamaloo, Noor Mohammad Sheikh donated an ambulance to SKIMS Hospital Bemina from his constituency development fund.
In his address, he complimented the hospital administration who undertook the task of operating a large number of emergency patients referred from Government L. D. Hospital in May 2017 when fire broke out in there.
He assured full support for the amalgamation of newly constructed 250-bedded Maternity & Child Care Hospital with the SKIMS Medical College, Bemina.
The Organizing Chairperson of the Workshop, Prof. RifatAra, HOD Gynaecology & Obstetrics, SKIMS Medical College, Bemina explained the importance of the workshop and stated that such surgical procedures are being done in a few centres of the State.
Prof. M. S. Khuroo said the need of the hour to strengthen the institution by putting in collective efforts and creating better patient care services both in quality and quantity.

The Principal of the College, Dr. Reyaz Untoo, explained the measures taken for removal of the deficiencies pointed out by the MCI like faculty, staff and infrastructural deficiencies. Many faculty posts that got filled up through proper selection and more than hundreds of para-medical vacancies filled up through proper selection which resulted in the removal of deficiency pointed out by the MCI on account of faculty and other categories of staff.
