Hyderabad, Jun 29 :  Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu Saturday said the country does not need any lessons from others, as it is the most secular one in the world even as religious freedom is a fundamental right guaranteed under the Constitution.

"Please remember that culture is a way of life and religion is a way of worship. Accordingly, I have the honour of asserting that India is a country built on the foundations of a civilisation that is fundamentally tolerant," he said.

In India, religious freedom is a fundamental right guaranteed under Articles 25 to 28 of the Constitution, he said.

"We do not need any lessons from anybody. Some countries of late have started giving us 'pravachans' (sermons), forgetting what is happening back in their own countries. If at all, you have to grade number one, the most secular country in the world, is Indian civilization, India, that is Bharat, our motherland," he said.

Naidu was speaking at the Graduation Day-2019 of Muffakham Jah College of Engineering and Technology here.

Last week, the US state department, in its annual 2018 International Religious Freedom Report, had alleged that "mob attacks by violent extremist Hindu groups against minority communities, particularly Muslims, continued in India in 2018 amid rumours that victims had traded or killed cows for beef".

It evoked a sharp reaction from the ruling BJP, which said it shows a clear bias against the Modi government.

Making his point, Naidu quoted the Indian concept of 'sarva dharma sama bhavana, which means respect for each others religion.

The Preamble of the Constitution declares the country as secular so as to guarantee every citizen equality without any discrimination based on religion, though our country is predominantly Hindu, he said.

India is the birthplace of four major religions of the world Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism and significant population of three other religions of the world - Islam, Christianity and Zoroastrianism - live in India, he said.

In fact, Indian Muslims constitute the third largest Muslim population in the world, he said.

In an apparent reference to incidents of lynching, he said some may happen here and there in a country of 135 crore people.

But such incidents should be 'localised' and action taken against those responsible for them, instead of branding the entire country as if things are going wrong, he said.

"In spite of languages, in spite of so many religions, in spite of different political parties, we are able to live together with peace and trust. There may be some isolated incidents here and there. They have to be isolated. They have to insulated. They have to be condemned and action has to be taken against those people..." he said.

Equality of religions as observed in all walks of life have enabled leaders from minority religions rise to hold the offices of President, Vice-President, Prime Minister, Governors, Chief Justices, Chief Election Commissioners and Army Chiefs, besides making major contributions in other walks of life like music, culture, sports and films, Naidu said.

Certain "aberrations like looking at minorities as vote banks" may have had some undesirable socio-political ramifications, but the situation is changing as a new, young and aspirational India is emerging fast, he said.

The motto of Sabka Sath Sabka Vikas Sabka Vishwas has its roots in the core principles of Indian civilisation, he said.

"We believe in an inclusive India, wherein every citizen has the same entitlements, irrespective of his or her religious leanings," he said.

All through the ages, Indian philosophers and rulers and the modern political leadership have expounded and upheld the principles of equality and tolerance, he said.

"The world can rest assured that India celebrates its religious diversity by upholding religious freedom. No other country matches India in respect of such diversity and the commitment to preserve such a colourful mosaic," Naidu said.

He deprecated discrimination based on caste, religion and gender and called for a bringing about a change in attitudes.

On incidents of rapes and other crimes against women and children, he said a change of mindset, not just laws, was required.

He also emphasised on achieving academic excellence.

"None of the Indian universities are there in the top 100 of the world. Why, is a question all of us should put to ourselves," he said.

Mumbai, Mar 26 :  Vice President Venkaiah Naidu Tuesday hailed Mahatma Gandhi as a visionary for his call to disband the Congress.

Naidu, a senior BJP leader before his elevation to the top Constitutional post in 2017, also lauded the Narendra Modi regime, mentioning a slew of flagship initiatives, including ease of doing business, which he said got recognition from the World Bank.

In remarks coming just ahead of polling for the Lok Sabha elections, the Vice President said Gandhi had spoken for the need to disband the Congress after Independence.

Speaking at the convocation of the RBI-promoted Indira Gandhi Institute of Developmental Research here, Naidu said this was political advice from Gandhi, adding he doesnt wish to dwell on it now as hes no more in active politics.

"Mahatma Gandhi had such a vision. After independence, he gave two advices, one is political, I dont want to dwell on that. He said disband the Congress. That was the first advice.

"Congress was a platform of different shades of people coming together to fight for Independence. He (Gandhi) said independence is achieved. So disband this (Congress) and start your own parties. That is not an issue for us today and moreover Im not in politics and dont want to speak politics also," Naidu said.

Another visionary advice given by the Father of the Nation was to concentrate on rural development, Naidu said.

In his over 50-minute speech, Naidu mentioned a slew of flagship schemes and initiatives of the Modi government and how they have driven change on the ground.

He said these include ease of doing business, Make in India, GST, demonetisation, direct benefit transfer, JAM trinity and the PM Jan Dhan Yojana, among others.

JAM trinity refers to the government's initiative to link people's Jan Dhan accounts, mobile numbers and aadhar cards.

He credited demonetisation and GST for widening the tax base in the country.

Abhi thoda parivartan aaya hai, kaafi parivartan aana abhi bhi baki hai (a little bit of change has come now and more changes are yet to come), he said.

This comment came while Naidu dwelt on work done under the ease of doing business initiative and was followed with a mention of the prime minister.

"The PM said earlier it used to be red tape; now let us have red carpet. Thats the talk of town everywhere now, he said.

The Vice President also made it clear that the remarks should not be seen as him giving good marks to the Modi-led government.              [Agencies]

New Delhi, Jun 25 : Asserting that caste has no relevance today, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu said cooperatives are the need of the hour for creating social harmony when caste, creed and religion are trying to dominate the minds of people.

He stressed that character, calibre, capacity and conduct are important in public life even as he rued that some people are trying to replace it with caste, community, cash and criminality.

The Vice President said the principles and values that cooperatives follow not only help in sustaining their business but also create social harmony irrespective of caste, creed or any other distinction.

"Nowadays, where caste, creed and religion are trying to dominate the minds of people, cooperative is the need of the hour... Caste has no relevance today," he said.

Delivering the 19th Vaikunth Bhai Mehta Memorial Lecture here, Naidu said one has to go back to character, calibre, capacity and conduct of individuals rather than going by caste, criminality, cash and community.

"This is the work of an individual who does not have those qualities and who finds its easy to provoke caste, communalise and use cash and then to earn cash. That is the way people are doing. It is a very dangerous trend. It should be curbed," he said.

The lecture was organised by the National Cooperative Union of India (NCUI).

Naidu also talked about the pioneering cooperator Vaikunthbhai Mehta, who was more interested in Mahatma Gandhi's constructive work than in politics.

"What is required then and now is constructive work. We are seeing more destruction in certain segments of the society which is not good. What is required is constructive attitude," he said.

Expressing concern over most district cooperative banks being in debt, Naidu said it is because of "mismanagement" and not because of the failure of the system.

The Vice President said that as the Chairman of Rajya Sabha, he told members in the Upper House that "my operation will depend on cooperative (principles). Otherwise, there will be separation".

If cooperative movement is seeing some setback, Naidu said it is because of wrong operation and sometime non-cooperation.

On Jan Dhan Scheme, which seeks to promote financial inclusion, Naidu said some of them made fun of the scheme.

"What is the point opening a bank account when there is no money. Those who argued realised in November 2016 about the importance of these bank accounts," he said, adding that those who had money started asking their drivers and cooks about this new bank accounts so that they can stash money.

"RBI is inquiring about it. We will get to know about it. Money which was stashed in bedroom, below the pillows and even in bathroom -- all reached the bank accounts. This was the purpose of the scheme...," Naidu said.

In November 2016, the government had cancelled old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes as legal tenders, as part of efforts to curb illicit fund flows.

Naidu also said that the RBI would tell how much was the black and white money. Income Tax department would have to see. Sooner the RBI looks into it, it would be good for the country, he added.

For doubling farmers' income by 2022, Naidu said, "the agricultural cooperatives can play a vital role in educating the farmers to reduce the cost of cultivation".

This can be done through balanced use of fertiliser, improve water use efficiency, establish more warehouse to avoid distress sale of produce, link with eNAM and emphasise value addition and allied activities, he added.

At the grass root level, Naidu said the impact of cooperative sector has a big role in bringing the urban-rural divide and creating opportunities for income generation.

Naidu also emphasised on the need to strengthen the cooperatives so that they can work for the welfare of farmers and give them credit at the time they need at a reasonable rate of interest.

Calling upon the state governments to strengthen cooperatives to solve the problem of unemployment and engaging more women, Naidu said, "it is high time that cooperatives at all levels gear up to meet the future challenges in a professional manner".

Noting that Mehta left politics and joined cooperative movement on advice of Mahatma Gandhi, Naidu said, "Now a days, leaving politics is not an easy thing. Unless you are rejected and you have become dejected, people do not retire from politics".

"Attraction of the chair is very powerful, even if the work is nil," he said lauding Mehta as a man of genuine humility who abhorred publicity of any kind.

Mehta made a pioneering contribution to the growth of cooperative movement, particularly in educating and training people. He had left his ministerial post to be part of cooperative movement in 1950s.  PTI

New Delhi, Aug 5 :  The voting process for the election to the office of the Vice-President of the country got underway here today. According to Election Commission schedule, the polling which started at 1000 hrs, will end at 1700 hrs. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the early voters. Among others NDA nominee M Venkaiah Naidu, also a Rajya Sabha member, came to exercise his voting right. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who is still a member of Lok Sabha, several Union Ministers, Congress MP Jairam Ramesh, Trinamool leader Dinesh Trivedi and Nominated Rajya Sabha MP and noted boxer Mary Kom were also present to to exercise their right. The counting of votes will also take place today itself. The contest this year is between BJP-led NDA nominee M Venkaiah Naidu and Gopalkrishna Gandhi, who has been fielded by 18 opposition parties, including the Congress, the Left and the regional parties. The ruling BJP, which has a commanding strength of 281 MPs in Lok Sabha can claim support of about 335 members in the Lok Sabha and about 75 in the Rajya Sabha. Over 60 members from AIADMK, TRS and YSR Congress are also likely to vote for Mr Naidu. There can be no whip for Presidential and election to the Vice-President's office as the Members of the respective electoral college are free to exercise their right through secret ballot. The voting pattern of JD(U) MPs - 10 in Rajya Sabha and two in Lok Sabha - would be keenly watched this time. The Nitish Kumar-led JD(U) had backed NDA candidate Ram Nath Kovind in Presidential election and had said that it would - however - support the candidature of Gopalkrishna Gandhi for polls to the office of the Vice-President. There have been major political developments with regard JD(U) lately as the party leader Mr Kumar had parted ways from RJD and Congress and formed an alternative government with BJP in Bihar. The BJP camp is predictably jubilant and senior leaders have exuded confidence that Mr Naidu will be the country's new Vice-President.The Vice-President of India is also ex-offico Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. The opposition candidate Gopalkrishna Gandhi, a kin of Mahatma Gandhi, sent in a post card to all MPs yesterday and sought their support. Mr Modi, yesterday, said that the next five years will be crucial for the country and noted that it is also significant that the country will have President and Vice-President from the BJP-led NDA during 2017-22.
