Lucknow, Sep 19: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has said every urban local body in the state will develop an attractive road, which will be named as the "Atal Gaurav Path" after former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Along with the beautification of these roads, all necessary and modern facilities should also be provided, he said here on Tuesday, adding that the urban local bodies should also make arrangements for cleaning the drains and keeping them covered.

According to the Directorate of Local Bodies, there are 16 municipal corporations, 198 nagar palika parishads and 438 nagar panchayats in the state.

Reviewing various schemes such as "Namami Gange", "Amrut Yojana" and "Smart City Mission", Adityanath said people from various parts of the world will be visiting the Kumbh-2019, which will be held in Allahabad from January 15 to March 4 next year.

He said cleanliness in the Sangam area should generate a feeling of devotion among the visitors and devotees and added that the preparations should be done keeping this in mind.

Adityanath also said it should be ensured that from December 15, no sewage canal, industrial or soild waste falls into the Ganga or any of its tributaries.

From January 2019, the holy river should be clean and its flow should be uninterrupted from Bijnor to Ballia, he added.

The chief minister directed the Urban Development and Irrigation departments to hold a meeting in advance to ensure that there was adequate water in the Ganga during the Kumbh. (PTI)

Gandhinagar, Sep 18: The Gujarat Assembly paid homage to former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and nine former state legislators on the first day of monsoon session Tuesday.

After paying homage to the deceased leaders, the House was adjourned for the day.

Chief Minister Vijay Rupani tabled a motion to pay homage to Vajpayee, two former state ministers and seven former MLAs who have died since the Budget session in March.

The chief minister called Vajpayee a "nation-builder".

"Atal-ji dedicated his life to the country. His thoughts will continue to inspire us for the rest of our lives," he said.

Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Paresh Dhanani said Vajpayee was "all-inclusive" leader who was acceptable to all parties.

Speaker Rajendra Trivedi said the country was Vajpayee's first love.

"He lived for the country, he was an ardent patriot.

We can see that from his poems," he said.

Homage was also paid to former Gujarat ministers Amarsinh Vaghela and Haribhai Patel and former MLAs Shankardas Makwana, Narsinh Padhiyar, Mohammed Ismail Patel, Manibhai Chaudhary, Iqubal Patel, Gulsinh Rathwa and Arvindsinh Rathod.

Six bills will be taken up for discussion and approval Wednesday in two sessions. (PTI)

New Delhi, Aug 27: Former prime minister Manmohan Singh has expressed concern over attempts to change the "nature and character" of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, saying Jawaharlal Nehru did not just belong to the Congress but to the entire nation.

In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he urged him to leave the Teen Murti complex "undisturbed" and said this would be respecting both history and heritage.

The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) was established in the memory of India's first prime minister and the museum at the Teen Murti House has preserved some rooms as they were at the time of Nehru's death.

Singh said during former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's tenure there was no attempt to change the nature and character of the NMML.

The former premier had described Nehru in Parliament as a "vibrant personality" and said "such a resident may never grace Teen Murti again", the senior Congress leader said.

"Let us respect this sentiment and keep Teen Murti as a memorial to our first prime minister Pandit Nehru and leave the Teen Murti complex undisturbed as it is. This way we will be respecting both history and heritage," Singh said in the letter.

"Jawaharlal Nehru belongs not just to the Congress but to the entire nation. It is in this spirit that I have written to you," he said.

The letter comes amid reports of dedicating the NMML in the memory of all former prime ministers, an idea strongly opposed by the Congress.

Singh said the NMML is dedicated to the memory of the country's first prime minister and prime architect of the Indian nation-state. Nehru has left behind an incredible imprint on our country and the world, he said.

His distinctiveness and greatness have been acknowledged even by his political opponents and rivals, Singh said.

Recalling the six-year tenure of Vajpayee as prime minister, he said there was no attempt made to change the nature and character of the NMML and the Teen Murti complex.

"But sadly, that seems to be part of the agenda of the Government of India now," the former prime minister said.

Singh said the NMML must remain a centre of first-rate scholarship and professional excellence and the museum itself must retain its primary focus on Nehru and the freedom movement.

"No amount of revisionism can obliterate that role and his contributions," he said.

Singh also said Vajpayee had said in Parliament that Nehru took the opposition along and was a refined gentleman and said such "greatness we may not again see in the near future". (PTI)

New York, Aug 25: United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has described former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee as an "exemplary statesman" during his visit to India's permanent mission to the UN here to offer his condolences to the late BJP leader.

Vajpayee, one of India's most charismatic leaders and inspirational orators, died on August 16 at the age of 93 in New Delhi.

Guterres, during his visit to the Permanent Mission of India this week, extended his heartfelt condolences to the former prime minister's family, recalling that he had met Vajpayee during the first India-EU summit.

The UN chief added that he would always be remembered as an "exemplary statesman and leader who worked selflessly for peace and development in India and the world".

The ambassadors and delegates of several countries, including Peru, Israel, Nigeria, Palestine, Switzerland, Pakistan and Japan, also paid a visit to record their messages in the condolence book. Atul Khare, the UN under-secretary-general for field support, also expressed his condolences.

Pakistan's delegate wrote that Vajpayee contributed to bringing a change in the India-Pakistan relations and remained a key supporter of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and regional cooperation for development.

The Consulate General of India also held a 'shradhanjali sabha' (homage meet), where several members of the Indian-American community and officials from other nations paid tributes to Vajpayee. (PTI)

Atal ji’s “Ashes” immersed in Jhelum, Kashmir
Srinagar, Aug 24: The spirit of great personality, who has ruled the hearts of billions, fostering a party of more than 10 million, has assorted into the land of love and devotion, this was stated by BJP National Vice-President & Prabhari for the state of Jammu & Kashmir, Avinash Rai Khanna, while he immersed the Ashes into the sacred waters of Jhelum, while all prayed for the Moksha of Atal ji.

Mumbai, Aug 23: An AIMIM corporator, who had last week opposed a resolution to pay tribute to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, has been arrested and sent to jail for alleged bootlegging and some other charges, police said today.

Sayyad Mateen Sayyad Rashid (32), the All-India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) corporator in Aurangabad, was sent to jail for a year on Tuesday under the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Slumlords, Bootleggers, Drug-Offenders and Dangerous Persons (MPDA) Act, an official said.

"During the general body meeting of AMC held on August 17, Mateen had opposed a resolution to pay tribute to former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He was subsequently beaten up, allegedly by some BJP corporators," the official said.

Mateen was later arrested and booked by City Chowk police station under IPC sections 294 (obscene acts or words in public), 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot) and 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth and language), the official added.

"The corporator was sent to Harsul jail in Aurangabad and was granted bail on Tuesday. However, on the same day we served the order to him issued by the city Commissioner of Police under the MPDA," senior inspector of City Chowk police station, D S Shingare, said.

He said two other offences had been registered against Mateen in the past.

"After analysing his criminal records, we found that he is a dangerous person and could promote enmity between two communities," Shingare said.

As per the provisions of the MPDA, the corporator will remain in detention for a year," he said. (PTI)

Jammu, Aug 22: Air was clearly wet and heavy with the emotions overflowing from the eyes of senior BJP leaders and prominent citizens, when they came upon the sight of “Asthi Kalash” of former Prime Minister, Bharat Ratna, Late Sh. Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji at BJP headquarter, Trikuta Nagar.
BJP State President Ravinder Raina (MLA) brought the “Asthi Kalash” from BJP Office New Delhi to Jammu and from Jammu Airport, where hundreds of party activists were eagerly waiting to get the sight of “Asthi Kalash” of a “Yug Purush”, proceeded in the form of huge rally towards the BJP headquarter, Trikuta Nagar, Jammu.
At BJP Headquarter, Trikuta Nagar, Union MoS in PMO, Dr. Jitendra Singh, MP (Lok Sabha) Jugal Kishore Sharma, MP (Rajya Sabha) Shamsher Singh Manhas, former Ministers Chander Prakash Ganga, Sham Choudhary, Sukhnandan Choudhary, Ajay Nanda, Priya Sethi and other senior leaders expressed their love and emotions for the great personality.
Ravinder Raina, in his epigrammatic and expressive words, sketched life portrait of Atal ji and said that he was always loved by all, beyond the party fold and with persons from every ideology. He said, Atal ji was the one who pioneered ethics and moral values in politics. Dr. Jitendra Singh, while expressing his love and emotions for Atal ji, said that in the history of 70 years of independent India, no one gained such a love, respect and popularity that were enjoyed by Atal ji during his life and even now. Already viewing him as Prime Minister, Public was eagerly waiting for him to be sworn in and take command as PM of India, he said. Regarding certain views, he said that Atal ji never compromised on any issue of J&K and BJP always follows his policy. He stressed that Vajpayee ji always opposed the special provisions for the state, which are evident from his numerous speeches. His legacy can only be understood by the dedicated volunteers of BJP, he said and added that the noble soul of Atal ji will never leave mother Earth, and will always remain here to guide and correct us.
Jugal Kishore Sharma, said that Atal ji will always be missed and his memories will remain alive in the soul of “Bharat”. He said that Atal ji was a great visionary, great poet, statesman, mentor of millions. Leader of masses, Man of words who always stood by the side of ground level activists, he said and added that all the activists looked upon him for guidance and advice.
Shamsher Singh Manhas recalled the old memories of strong intellect and leadership shown by Atal ji like his keen observations and directions in Doda Bachao Andolan and similar conditions. He also stressed on the simplicity of Atal ji and said that Atal ji used to give life saving suggestions in informal talks. He prompted all to follow Atal ji, making him role model in politics.

After the tribute programme at party headquarter, all the party leaders carried the “Asthi Kalash” to “Surya Putra Tawi” in the form “Rally”, where the “Ashes” of the great public leader were immersed in the Holy waters of Sacred River, with the chanting of Vedic Hymns.

Panaji, Aug 21: The ashes of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee would be immersed in the Mandovi and Zuari rivers of Goa on August 24, a senior BJP official said today.

Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar will immerse the ashes in the Mandovi river while South Goa BJP MP Narendra Sawaikar will do the same in the Zuari river, state party president Vinay Tendulkar told reporters here.

Parrikar, who is in the US for a medical check-up, is scheduled to return to Goa on August 23.

Tendulkar said he would go to New Delhi to collect the 'kalash' (urn containing the ashes), which would be taken around the state before immersing the ashes in the two prominent rivers of Goa.

"The ashes will be brought to Goa tomorrow evening and will be be kept at BJP state head office here so that the party workers and others can pay their tributes," he said.

Vajpayee was a great leader and many would like to pay their tributes to him, Goa BJP general secretary Sadanand Tanavade said.

The BJP will hold a 'kalash yatra' across the state on August 23 and 24 before immersion of the ashes, he said.

The BJP had said earlier that Vajpayee's ashes will be immersed in various rivers across the country.

One of the most charismatic leaders in independent India, Vajpayee died in Delhi on August 16 at the age of 93.

He was cremated with full state honours at the Rashtriya Smriti Sthal in the national capital on August 17. (PTI)

Pays rich tributes in “Sharadhanjali Sabha”
Jammu, Aug 17: Mourning the irreparable loss of the Nation, Society and especially BJP, enforced by the heavenly departure of the beloved former Prime Minister of India, Bharat Ratna, Late Sh. Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji, the State headquarter of J&K BJP remained thronged by the prominent leaders to the ground level activists as well as the common masses throughout the day on Friday.
Whole day, burdened by the feeling of extreme loss and pain, sitting at the hallway, all remained glued to the television screen at party headquarter, not willing to miss even a fraction of last sight while the Godly soul sets on the final path.
Later, in the evening, after the final rights and rituals of the stalwart at Delhi, J&K BJP organized “Sharadhanjali Sabha” at its state headquarter, Trikuta Nagar, Jammu in the tender memories of the great patriarch of BJP, who laid the strong foundation of “Jana Sangha” to the present day “Bharatiya Janata Party”.
Prominent faces of J&K BJP expressed their feelings, love and emotions for the great soul in limited but touching words. Those who expressed their thoughts while speaking their heart out were BJP State General Secretary (Org.) SRINAGAR, AUGUST 17: J&K Services Selection Board (SSB) has postponed the counselling and document verification of candidates for various posts scheduled to be held today on 17th August 2018 in view of the mourning announced by the Governor’s Administration following the demise of Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, former Prime Minister.
According to a SSB spokesman, new date for counselling and document verification which was scheduled for today shall be announced separately. He, however, said that the counselling and document verification of the candidates shall be held as per the schedule from 20th August 2018 (Monday).

New Delhi, Aug 17: Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Bangladesh Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali arrived here today to pay their last respects to former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who passed away yesterday at the age of 93.

Sri Lanka's Acting Foreign Minister Lakshman Kiriella, Nepal's Foreign Minister Pradeep Gyawali, Pakistan's acting information minister Syed Zafar Ali and a senior minister from Afghanistan are also expected to arrive here later today to pay their respects to Vajpayee, official sources said.

Bangladesh remembers Vajpayee for his contribution to the Liberation War and the strong support he extended to the people of Bangladesh, Ali told reporters after his arrival here.

Vajpayee's cortege made its way through the city to reach the BJP headquarters this morning, where leaders gathered in large numbers to pay homage to the departed leader.

The funeral procession will leave the BJP headquarters at 1 pm and the last rites will be performed at the Rashtriya Smriti Sthal at 4 pm. (PTI)

New Delhi, Aug 17: Thousands of people gathered outside the BJP headquarters today and hundreds lined up inside to pay homage to former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the poet-politician who wove together pragmatism and a vision for an inclusive India.

Vajpayee, 93, passed away at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here last evening after prolonged illness.

The young and old, men and women, some with children, jostled outside the gates of the BJP headquarters, anxious for a last glimpse of the late leader before the state funeral at the Rashtriya Smriti Sthal on the banks of the Yamuna later in the day.

Inside, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP president Amit Shah and a host of ministers and party workers paid their last respects to the late leader, mourned by them and the opposition as one of India's tallest leaders.

The air was solemn as Vajpayee's body, draped in the tricolour, was placed on a platform draped in white flowers. Hundreds of people filed past the body in silence, with a large portrait of a smiling Vajpayee -- a BJP flag on either side -- in the backdrop.

Opposition leaders like CPI's D Raja and CPI(M)'s Sitaram Yechury were among those who visited the BJP headquarters to pay their respects.

Earlier in the morning, hundreds of people chanted "Atal Bihari Amar Rahe" as Vajpayee's cortege made its way from his home through the city to reach the BJP office.

A decorated gun carriage carrying his mortal remains left his home on Krishna Menon Marg around 10 am and reached the party's headquarters at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg, about five kilometres away, around 11 am.

The funeral procession will leave the BJP headquarters at 1 pm and the last rites will be performed at the Rashtriya Smriti Sthal at 4 pm.

The funeral procession will go through Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, Delhi Gate, Netaji Subhash Marg, Nishadraj Marg and Shanti van before reaching Smriti Sthal, Delhi Traffic Police said in a tweet.

Police has made elaborate security arrangements for the funeral procession, officials said.

Seen as a moderate face of BJP, Vajpayee first became prime minister in 1996, leading a shaky coalition whose members were suspicious of the BJP's right-wing politics. It lasted for 13 days and collapsed after losing a vote of no-confidence.

His second stint as prime minister was in 1998 when the National Democratic Alliance again came to power but that lasted for just 13 months.

Finally, the NDA with Vajpayee as PM returned to power in 1999 and was voted out in 2004.

In the morning, Congress President Rahul Gandhi, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Army Chief Bipin Rawat, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Sunil Lanba and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat paid homage to the former prime minister at his official residence.

In view of the funeral procession, several roads in the national capital have been closed for the public later in the day.

Some roads closed from 8 am include Krishna Menon Marg, Sunehri Bagh Road, Tughlak Road, Akbar Road, Tees January Marg, Man Singh Road, Bhagwan Dass Road, Shahjahan Road and Sikandara Road.

DDU Marg, IP Marg, BSZ Marg (from Tilak Bridge to Delhi Gate), JLN Marg (from Rajghat to Delhi Gate) will also be closed, the traffic police said.

Commuters have been advised to use Aurobindo Marg, Safdarjung Road, Mother Teresa Crescent, Park Street, Mandir Marg to travel between north and south Delhi.

Those travelling between east and west Delhi can use Vikas Marg, Shahdara Bridge and Wazirabad Bridge to reach Ring Road. (PTI)

Agartala, Aug 17: The Tripura government has declared a holiday today as a mark of respect to the former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee who died in New Delhi yesterday.

A notification, issued here last night, said all government offices and educational institutes and banks run by the state government would remain closed today.

The state government also declared state mourning for seven days with effect from yesterday. Throughout the mourning period the national flag will fly at half mast, it said.

Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb flew to New Delhi and paid floral tribute to the late leader yesterday.

In a message Deb said, "we lost a great statesman of the country. His demise is an irreparable loss to the country."

Vajpayee died at the age of 93 at the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS), New Delhi. (PTI)

Kolkata, Aug 17: The West Bengal government has declared a half-day holiday in its offices and educational institutions today as a mark of respect to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who passed away yesterday evening in New Delhi at the age of 93.

All state government undertakings, urban and local bodies, offices, government-aided schools and colleges will be closed after 2pm today, a senior official said, quoting a notification issued late last night.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had flown to Delhi from Kolkata yesterday evening to pay her last respects to the visionary leader. (PTI)

New Delhi, Aug 17: Hundreds of people queued up here outside the residence of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee this morning to pay their last respects to the departed leader.

Heavy security arrangements, including deployment of police, traffic and paramilitary personnel, were in place around the 6-A Krishna Menon Marg bungalow in the Lutyens Delhi.

According to security officials present here, the gates of the residence would be thrown open at 7.30 am for the public to pay homage to Vajpayee.

The mortal remains would later be taken to the Bharatiya Janata Party's national headquarters at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg.

The final journey to the Rashtriya Smriti Sthal would begin around 1 pm.

Vajpayee died at the AIIMS hospital here yesterday at the age of 93, following a prolonged illness.

A 52-year-old man, Yogesh Kumar, arrived here with a group of people from Uttarkashi in Uttarakhand.

The group covered a distance of around 500-km overnight in the hope to have one last glimpse of their beloved leader, Kumar said.

"I had met Vajpayee ji in 1984 when he had visited Uttarkashi en route to Gangotri. He visited the town once again in 1986," Kumar claimed, as he displayed a picture of the Vajpayee with him.

"I have also brought along the Gangajal from Gangotri," he said, hoping to find an opportunity to see him.

Another man, in his early 20s, said he had come all the way from Bihar to pay homage to the former prime minister.

"I believe we have lost a great leader in him," he said. (PTI)

New Delhi, Aug 16: Congress president Rahul Gandhi today said India has lost a great son and will miss former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who died at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

Offering his condolences to Vajpayee's family and admirers, Gandhi said the former prime minister was loved and respected by millions.

"Today India lost a great son. Former PM, Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji, was loved and respected by millions. My condolences to his family and all his admirers. We will miss him," he said on Twitter.

Vajpayee, one of India's most charismatic leaders who led the nation through several crises and held together a tenuous coalition with his inclusive politics, died here today evening. He was 93.

Vajpayee, a bachelor, is survived by his adopted daughter Namita Kaul Bhattacharya.

His death was announced by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) hospital where he was admitted June 11 with a variety of ailments. (PTI)
