New Delhi, Sep 10 :  The BJP Monday claimed that the 'Bharat Bandh' call given by the Congress was to divert the people's attention from the hearing in the Delhi High Court on a matter related to the National Herald case involving its "corrupt" leaders. 


Welcoming the Delhi High Court's order to dismiss pleas of Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi challenging the reopening of their tax assessments for 2011-12, the BJP's national spokesperson, Sambit Patra, said it was a "victory of common man" and "exposes the real face of the Gandhi family". 

Addressing the media at the party head office here, Patra said this was a big victory in the battle against corruption initiated by the Narendra Modi dispensation.

The income tax cases against the Congress leaders have arisen from the probe into a private criminal complaint filed by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy before a trial court in connection with the National Herald case.

"The whole (Gandhi) family today is known as a family who cheats, a family who goes for tax evasion, a family of corrupts and a family who conspires against the law of the land, a family which includes Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Robert Vadra and Priyanaka Vadra," Patra said.

He further claimed that the call for 'Bharat Bandh' by the Congress was also linked with this case as it was to divert the people's attention from the National Herald matter.

They knew that they are going to lose the case in the Delhi High Court and that is the reason why today was the day they have given a call for the 'Bharat Bandh', Patra said.

"The people whose conscience was locked somewhere, those who were thick involved in corruption, the same people had deliberately called for the Bharat Bandh because they knew the National Herald case was on and the verdict was expected today," Patra told reporters.

Attacking the entire Gandhi family, the BJP leader said it exposes the reality of them who have been cheating the country for years, and added, "they had a sense of entitlement that throne of India belongs to a particular family".

He also took on former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and said it appears that even he was complicit in the case.

In the complaint in the National Herald case, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and others have been accused of conspiring to cheat and misappropriate funds by paying just Rs 50 lakh, through which the Young India (YI) had obtained the right to recover Rs 90.25 crore that the Associated Journals Ltd (AJL) owed to the Congress party.PTI

Hyderabad, Sep 10: The 'Bharat Bandh' call given by several opposition parties over rising petrol and diesel prices Monday evoked a mixed response as it was business as usual in many parts of the state, including the capital city.

No untoward incidents have been reported so far, police said.

The police took scores of leaders and workers of the Congress, Left and Telugu Desam Party into custody when they held protests near State Road Transport Corporation depots, preventing busses from plying on roads.

AICC secretary Srinivasan Krishnan and 40 others were taken into preventive custody in Karimnagar town after they staged a dharna in front of RTC bus station in Dharmapuri in Karimnagar district, a police official said.

"They were later shifted to the Police Training Centre," a police official said.

Srinivasan Krishnan told PTI that besides the central taxes, local TRS government has also levied more tax further burdening the public.

A senior official of the TSRTC told PTI there was no disruption of services in any district of the state.

"We have not received any reports of disruption of services. Our officials are in touch with police officials. If there is any law and order problem respective depot managers will take decision on running the services," the official said.

Reports indicate that several government and commercial establishments are conducting activities normally.

Osmania University Vice Chancellor S Ramachandram told PTI the pre-Phd examination which was scheduled to be held Monday has been postponed for tomorrow.

According to him, all the educational institutions affiliated to the varsity are open and functioning.

A senior official of the State School Education department said they have not issued any orders to close schools in view of the bandh.

However, respective school headmasters will take a decision as and when necessity.

RTC buses were seen plying in minimal numbers. Petrol bunks remained open and some of the commercial establishments and educational institutions remain closed in Karimnagar and Warangal, reports indicated. (PTI)

Mumbai, Sep 10: The Shiv Sena Monday took a jibe at opposition parties, stating their nationwide bandh against the rising fuel prices should not look like a sudden act undertaken after waking up from a "long sleep".

The BJP's bickering ally said it has been carrying the burden of opposition parties on its shoulders for long and it now wants to see where these outfits stand on pro-people issues.

"We have been carrying the burden of opposition leaders so far and we now want to see the strength of the opposition. People's interests are protected when opposition parties perform (their duty) with efficiency," the Sena said in an editorial published in its mouthpiece 'Saamana'.

The Marathi daily said people may ask the Sena where it stands on the issue of joining the 'Bharat Bandh' called Monday by the Congress to protest the rising prices of petrol and diesel and supported by several opposition parties.

Responding to its own query, the Uddhav Thackeray-led outfit said it wanted to see the strength of the opposition on key issues.

"The people of this country have been watching closely how inflation is rising and petrol and diesel prices are escalating.

"Hopefully, the bandh should not look like the opposition has suddenly woken up from a long sleep on peoples issues and called for the bandh," the Sena publication said.

"Let some in the opposition parties realise where exactly they stand when it comes to peoples issues," it said.

The party targeted Maharashtra minister and BJP leader Chandrakant Patil over his reported comments that one should step into shoes of BJP leaders to realise how difficult it is to run a government.

"Patil should know that it is easier to be a BJP leader than being a common man. Rising petrol prices have a direct impact on escalation of cost of essential items such as foodgrains, milk, eggs, public transport among others," the editorial said.

The Maharashtra-based party hit at out the BJP-led NDA government for not fulfilling pre-poll promises.

"During the 2014 general election, Narendra Modi had made a promise of generating two crore jobs. On the contrary, 20 lakh jobs have been lost almost every year under the Modi regime," the Sena alleged.

"The way the government is putting up billboards about growth in the GDP, it should also put up boards of how fuel prices are skyrocketing," the party said.

The party also wondered when BJP leaders are going to find time to talk about rising prices of fuel instead of targeting Congress president Rahul Gandhi.

The Union government had earned a profit of Rs 2.29 lakh crore from the sale of petrol and diesel. The BJP is in power (along with allies) in 22 states and it can easily bring down the cost of fuel in these states, said the Shiv Sena.

The Sena is part of the BJP-led governments at the Centre and also in Maharashtra. However, it often slams government policies and also criticises BJP leaders on a range of issues. (PTI)

Mumbai, Sep 10: The Maharashtra Congress Monday staged protests in various parts of the state in response to the Bharat Bandh called by the party's central leadership against rising fuel prices.

The shutdown is backed by other opposition parties such as the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), the Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), the Samajwadi Party, the Peasants and Workers' Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).

In Mumbai, Maharashtra Congress chief Ashok Chavan led the party's protest, travelling by a local train to Andheri railway station before staging a rail roko there.

Congress leaders Manikrao Thakare, Naseem Khan and others joined Chavan during the protest as party workers raised slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government.

The opposition party also hit out at the Devendra Fadnavis-led BJP government in Maharashtra.

"The Modi and Fadnavis governments have engaged in loot by levying excise charges (on fuel products). It is unjust. It is destroying the lives of people. Hence, we are observing this protest. We demand withdrawal of the fuel price hike," Chavan told reporters.

The Congress leaders staged protest for around 15 minutes before they were taken away by security personnel to the nearby DN Nagar Police Station in suburban Andheri.

In Pune, suspected workers of the MNS reportedly vandalised buses to protest the rising fuel prices.

Protests were also staged in several other parts of the state, including Manmad, Nashik, Kolhapur, Pandharapur (Solapur district) and Virar (Palghar district).

Petrol and diesel prices set new records Sunday.

According to the price notification issued by state fuel retailers, the price of petrol was raised by 12 paise a litre and diesel by 10 paise per litre on Sunday. (PTI)

Bengaluru, Sep 10: Normal life was thrown out of gear during the 'Bharat Bandh' called by the Congress and supported by JD(S), its ally in the coalition government, and other parties, to protest the rise in prices of petroleum products.

Roads in the city wore a deserted look since morning as government buses, private taxis and most of the autorickshaws did not ply. Business establishments, shops, malls, certain private enterprises remained closed.

The busy central bus stand in Bengaluru, which is normally bustling with activity also wore a deserted look, sources said.

KSRTC buses kept off the road, sources said, adding city buses also did not ply.

Hundreds of workers belonging to the Congress, JD(S), Left parties and various other outfits came on the streets to ensure the bandh was a success.

They raised slogans against the hike in petrol and diesel prices.

In Mangaluru, incidents of stone pelting at hotels and shops, which remained open, were reported.

The shutdown was successful in many other parts of the state including Tumakuru, Ramanagar, Mandya, Channapatna, Hassan, Mangaluru, Chamarajnagar, Mysuru. Hubballi, Bidar and Kolar.

BJP state chief B S Yeddyurappa condemned the shutdown and called it a conspiracy by the coalition government of the Congress and JD(S) for forcibly making the bandh successful.

"It's an ill-intended bandh to trouble the common man and mislead them. This bandh is benefiting only the extortionists. People know what's happening. Nowhere in the country it's successful except for Karnataka because it's a conspiracy of the Congress and JD(S)," Yeddyurappa said.

Elaborate security arrangements were made by the Karnataka Police in view of the bandh.

Ranchi, Sep 10: Altogether 58 Congress activists were Monday taken into police custody in Jharkhand for forcibly trying to enforce the 'Bharat Bandh' called by the party, a police officer said.

The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, the Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Left parties in Jharkhand are supporting the Congress-sponsored 'Bharat bandh called against fuel price hike.

Fifty eight Congress activists including Palamau district Congress president Jaias Ranjan Pathak were taken into custody for forcibly trying to enforce the bandh, Superintendent of Police Inderjeet Mahata said.

Barring Garhwa district, normal life is not affected in Pakur, Jamshedpur, Ranchi, Hazaribagh, Lohardaga, Gumla, Ramgarh, Giridih, Latehar, Palamau, Dhanbad and other districts, according to reports.

Goods trains and passengers trainings were being escorted by the police, a police officer said.

Vehicular traffic is normal in most parts of the state, including Ranchi, the reports said. (PTI)

Kolkata, Sept 10: A 'Bharat Bandh' called by the Congress and various opposition parties to protest a hike in fuel prices is underway in the city and the suburbs amidst strict measures by the West Bengal government.

The ruling Trinamool Congress had expressed support on the issues, including the depreciation of the rupee, but said it was against a bandh.

The Congress has called the bandh for six hours from 9 am, while the CPI(M)-led Left Front called a 12-hour bandh starting from 6 am.

Almost all schools and colleges were open with the scheduled examinations underway and the office-goers were seen rushing to office.

Train services were also normal.

A senior official of the Kolkata Traffic Police, when contacted, said all measures have been taken to ensure that normal life was not impacted by the bandh.

"We will take strict action against those who will try to hamper normal life, put up blockades, try to stop people from going to their work or open their business enterprises. We have employed enough officers for the purpose. Hope everything will be fine," he said.

Bandh supporters protested on the railway tracks at Jadavpur station which was, however, withdrawn after commuters started protesting.

Additional police personnel were deployed in the state to ensure that there was no disruption or violence in connection with the bandh call.

State transport undertakings will run more buses than usual to ensure that commuters are not inconvenienced, senior state minister Partha Chatterjee had announced Sunday.

The state government had issued a circular asking all government employees to attend office on Monday.

All the state government offices will remain open Monday and show-cause notices will be issued to the absent employees. Leave will be granted only on the grounds of hospitalisation and family bereavement, the government circular had said. (PTI)

Chennai, Sep 10: Normal life largely remained unaffected here Monday in view of the "Bharat Bandh" called by the Congress to protest the rising prices of petroleum products, as the public transport operated smoothly while most commercial establishments remained open.

Police sources said government buses were plying as usual even as educational institutions and a large number of shops and commercial establishments remained open.

However, autorickshaws affiliated to trade unions participating in Monday's shutdown kept off the roads but a majority of them were plying, they said.

In Coimbatore, normal life was not affected as shops and commercial establishments opened as usual.

Police said city buses were operating but those bound for Kerala were not plying.

Buses bound to Karnataka from here were stopped at Hosur, the police added.

In Tirupur, majority of knitwear units remained closed, they said.

The nation-wide bandh has been called by the Congress over rising fuel prices and depreciation of the rupee. (PTI)

Patna, Sept 10: The 'Bharat Bandh' called by the Congress, to protest spiralling fuel prices, got off to a start in Bihar on Monday with no incidents of violence reported till 10.30 am.

Reports of traffic blockades have so far come from rural areas of Patna district, Muzaffarpur, Lakhisarai and Nalanda districts, police said.

In the state capital, private schools remained closed.

In Bihar, the bandh which has been called by the Congress, is being supported by the RJD, NCP, Samajwadi Party, Left Front, SP and HAM(S).

The bandh will be observed between 9 am to 3 pm during which leaders and workers from opposition parties would hit the streets requesting people to cooperate and support the bandh, senior Bihar Congress leader and MLC Prem Chandra Mishra said Sunday. (PTI)

New Delhi, Sep 10: Offices, schools and colleges in the national capital opened at regular time despite the 'Bharat Bandh' called by the Congress to protest against the hike in petrol and diesel prices.

Heavy police deployment was made in the national capital with reserve police forces deployed and motorcycle patrols being put on high alert, a senior police officer said.

The officer said police personnel have been deployed at petrol pumps across Delhi to ensure no untoward incident takes place.

Traffic was affected in Daryaganj and around Ramlila Maidan due to the protest and commuters faced problems in reaching their destinations as the cab companies had hiked their fares.

Opposition parties led by Congress president Rahul Gandhi started a march from Rajghat to Ramlila Maidan here to protest against the rising prices of petrol and diesel.

Senior Aam Aadmi Party leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh and Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Jha were also present at the protest.

Meanwhile, AAP leaders staged a protest at Jantar Mantar against the fuel price hike.

Senior party leader Dilip Pandey said unrest against Narendra Modi-led government is growing and the opposition cannot remain silent to the plight of common man affected by issues like fuel price hike, corruption and unemployment.

Offices were opened on time and official work was not affected at the Delhi Secretariat due to Bharat Bandh, an official said.

Schools and colleges also had classes on time though students experienced difficulties in finding transportation.

However, a transport department official said the DTC buses and cluster buses were running as usual and no reports of disruption were received so far. (PTI)
