Mumbai, Mar 11 :  The Shiv Sena on Monday said patriotism is not the monopoly of a single party and falsely calling people "anti-national" just because they are political opponents is nothing but suppression of freedom of expression.

The party's remarks come amid a row over politicisation of the air strike.

"Patriotism is not the monopoly of a single party...we wonder when politicians will understand that the action (air strike) was part of duty (of soldiers) and not a task asked to be carried out," the Uddhav Thackeray-led party said in an editorial in its mouthpiece 'Saamana'.

Those demanding proof of the air strike and the ones seeking votes donning military fatigues are equally wrong, the Sena said, referring to Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari who wore military fatigues at a recent rally.

The Sena said it was an insult to the soldiers and their courage.

"Why act frivolously by wearing soldiers' uniforms which they have obtained after rigorous training and hard work? It supports the allegations of the Opposition that the BJP is politicising the air strike," said the Sena, an ally of the BJP at the Centre and in Maharashtra.

The terror attack in Pulwama in which 40 CRPF soldiers were killed was more serious than the air strike and images of the carnage in Kashmir could be used by the Opposition to corner those in power, the editorial in 'Saamna' said.

"We have basically failed to prevent the casualties of our soldiers, but some wear the camouflage (outfits) and campaign for political reasons. It doesn't look good when the Election Commission has to intervene and ask the political parties not to use images of jawans in political campaigns," it said.

The Sena lauded the "real courage" shown by wives of slain Army officers Colonel Santosh Mahadik and Major Prasad Mahadik, Swati Mahadik and Gauri Mahadik respectively, for their decision to undergo rigorous training and join the armed forces to serve the country.          [Agencies]

Mumbai, Feb 27 :  A day after Indian fighter jets bombed the biggest camp of terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) in Pakistan, the Shiv Sena on Wednesday demanded continuous operations, dubbing the neighbouring country "dangerous" for the entire world.

The Sena, in an editorial in party mouthpiece 'Saamana', said there cannot be peace across the globe until Pakistan is wiped off the world map.

In remarks laced with sarcasm, it sought to know whether the terror launch pads in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) were "cultural centres", as according to that country's Prime Minister Imran Khan, there was no terrorist activity originating from its soil.

"There cannot be world peace until Pakistan is eliminated from the global map. Countries like Pakistan are dangerous not only for India, but the entire world. There is no democracy in Pakistan, so their army chief misuses power in the name of prime minister and the government," it said.

In a pinpointed and swift air strike that lasted less than two minutes, India pounded Jaish-e-Mohammed's biggest training camp in Pakistan early Tuesday, killing up to 350 terrorists and trainers who were moved there for their protection after the Pulwama attack, officials said.

The Sena said, "The question which remains unanswered is if one strike on Pakistan is enough to avenge the death of our jawans? Their blood isn't cheap. There should be continuous operations against the country to put an end to the terrorism continuing from there." 

It said the way the United States gunned down al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden on Pakistan's soil, JeM chief Masood Azhar needs to be eliminated as well to avenge the killing of 40 CRPF jawans.

Recalling that former prime minister Indira Gandhi had showed the Indian Army's might in 1971 by dividing Pakistan into two, the Sena expressed hope that a similar operation would be conducted against the neighbouring country under Narendra Modi's rule.                   [Agencies]

Mumbai, Jan 12 : The Shiv Sena Saturday termed the ouster of reinstated CBI Director Alok Verma, who resigned from police service Friday, as a panic reaction of the Narendra Modi government which is battling allegations over the purchase of Rafale fighter aircraft.

In an editorial in the party mouthpiece "Saamana", the Sena said the government has set "wrong precedents" by denying Verma an opportunity to defend himself, and took aim at Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Verma resigned a day after he was transferred from the position of CBI chief to Director General, Fire Service, Civil Defence and Home Guards under the home ministry by a high powered committee headed by the prime minister.

He was reinstated as CBI director by the supreme court only on January 8, nearly three months after he and special director Rakesh Asthana were divested of their powers and sent on administrative leave by the government over allegations and counter-allegations of corruption.

"If the prime minister can use every platform to defend himself amid allegations over the Rafale deal then why such an opportunity was not given to the ousted CBI chief?" asked Sena.

Referring to the entire episode, the Sena questionned, "Did the fear in the mind of some (people) that many secrets would tumble out of the CBI's closet in case of Verma heading the agency even for a day led to his immediate ouster?

"What about the allegations that he was shunted out because he may have made the government an accused in the Rafale deal and would have registered an offence?" it asked.

Sena further said Asthana, who enjoyed the "backing" of the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), had tried to turn the CBI into a "slave" of the government.

The government has set "wrong precedents" by removing Verma as the CBI director, it said.

Sena said BJP MP Subramanian Swamy had said that Verma cannot be removed solely on the basis of the CVC (Central Vigilance Commission) report.

"If Verma was indeed indulged in corruption, why no action was taken against him or a case filed? Why was he transferred to a side posting like the DG of fire services and home guards? The government needs to answer these questions," the edit said.

The CVC itself is not free of corruption, it said.

Taking aim at Modi over the Rafale deal, Sena said the "lawyers" of the PM do not have answers to the questions being raised by Congress chief Rahul Gandhi.

"Modi should have intervened when the crisis between Verma and Asthana started simmering," it said.

Nothing else can be expected of a "scared government" surrounding by the Rafale deal allegations, the Sena said.             PTI

Mumbai, Jan 9 : Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday began his tour of the drought-affected Marathwada region in Maharashtra.

During his visit to Beed district in the region, Thackeray will hand over 100 cattle fodder-laden trucks and other essential supplies to farmers, a Sena leader said. 

After the distribution of fodder and other essential supplies, the Sena chief will undertake a tour of the drought-hit region, he said.

He will also address a farmers' rally in Beed before leaving for Jalna district, where he will hold talks with farmers, he added.

Notably, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also visiting Maharashtra's Solapur district on Wednesday to launch infrastructure and housing projects worth Rs 3,168 crore.        PTI

Mumbai, Dec 26 : The Shiv Sena Wednesday slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his power like oxygen remarks, saying those who failed to get "achhe din" are now feeling disgusted at the thought of sitting in the opposition and thieves were being "purified" to ensure the supply of oxygen.

It also said that the government's move to snoop on computers and mobile phones was not a sign of a real democracy but its "restlessness" to stay in power. 


In an editorial in the party mouthpiece Saamna, the Sena said today Lord Rama in Ayodhya and BJP veteran Lal Krishna Advani in politics are in exile while others are reaping fruits of the "oxygen of power".

"Sending somebody in exile forcefully is the (current) politics for power," said the party, which is an ally of the BJP at the Centre and in Maharashtra.

Taking a jibe at the opposition, Modi had said on Monday that power is like oxygen for "some people" with restlessness setting in if they are out of it for even "two or five years". 

Further slamming the BJP, the Marathi daily said those who could not bring 'achhe din' (good days) despite being in power now fear the Opposition. They get a feeling of disgust if they have to sit in the Opposition.

"Modiji said (former prime minister) Vajpayee spent most of his life in the Opposition, yet remained contended. But some people are exactly the opposite, according to Modiji. The question that now arises is who are these people?" it asked.

"In order to ensure the oxygen supply of power, hooligans and thieves are purified. To win polls, criminals are made 'valmiki' (referring to the sage who wrote the epic Ramayan). In the end, power is irresistible," the Uddhav Thackeray-led party said.

In a scathing attack on the BJP, it said that for power, the alliance with Sena, based on the principle of Hindutva, was also broken in 2014 and the "cylinder of the oxygen of Hindutva" was stolen.

"Now when it is time for people to plug out the supply to this oxygen cylinder of Hindutva, statements are made (by BJP) that an alliance with Sena will happen, it said.

The Sena also slammed the government's move to snoop on computers.

"The government's move to snoop on computers and mobile phones is not a sign of a real democracy and freedom, but its restlessness to stay in power," the Sena said.

The government had last week authorised 10 central agencies to intercept, monitor and decrypt all data contained in any computer system and asserted that this was being done to prevent "any unauthorised use of these powers".

The move had set off a political storm with the opposition accusing the government of trying to create a "surveillance state".     PTI

New Delhi, Dec 12 (PTI) The Lok Sabha was adjourned on Wednesday till noon following protests by Congress, Shiv Sena and AIADMK members demanding JPC probe on the Rafale deal, construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya and justice for farmers of the Cauvery delta respectively.

As soon as the Question Hour began after obituary references to 11 former MPs, members belonging to the Congress, Shiv Sena and AIADMK trooped into the well carrying banners and shouting slogans.

Congress members demanded a probe by a Joint Parliamentary Committee into the alleged corruption in the Rafale aircraft deal while Shiv Sena MPs staged protests demanding immediate construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya.

Members belonging to the AIADMK raised slogans demanding justice for Tamil Nadu farmers living along the Cauvery delta.

Speaker Sumitra Mahajan tried to pacify members but in vain.

As the pandemonium continued, the Speaker adjourned the House till noon.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, senior BJP leader L K Advani, Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge besides others were present in the House.

Three Jammu and Kashmir Special Police Officers (SPOs) and one police personnel were kidnapped in the Shopian district of the state.The bodies were recovered from an orchard in Wangam area, more than a kilometre from the village the policemen were abducted from. The dead constable are Nissar Ahmed and two special police officers – Firdous Ahmed and Kulwant Singh – from Kapren and Heepora areas of Shopian district.
Ashok Gupta stated that India is under a double attack as Pakistani Army is continuously violating the ceasefire on the international borders. Mr Gupta stated that all this planning and execution would not have been possible without the local intel to the militants which is provided by the Hurriyat people. He demanded that NIA through his investigation has proved the Hurriyat involve the in all form of Seditious activities and there anti national activities have costed us various precious lives.

Some state government ministers have been boasting the newly formed Pakistan government upon there return from the Swearing in ceremony as there act of hugging the Pakistan army General has not only pulled down down the moral of the Indian army but also raised a question in the mind of the Indian citizens regarding the politics played by keeping the national interest on the line.
All the ties with Pakistan should be banished and the Pakistan embassy in New Delhi should be shut down and an all out war should be declared against the terror nation as they only understand the language of bullets.

Mumbai, Sep 10: The Shiv Sena Monday took a jibe at opposition parties, stating their nationwide bandh against the rising fuel prices should not look like a sudden act undertaken after waking up from a "long sleep".

The BJP's bickering ally said it has been carrying the burden of opposition parties on its shoulders for long and it now wants to see where these outfits stand on pro-people issues.

"We have been carrying the burden of opposition leaders so far and we now want to see the strength of the opposition. People's interests are protected when opposition parties perform (their duty) with efficiency," the Sena said in an editorial published in its mouthpiece 'Saamana'.

The Marathi daily said people may ask the Sena where it stands on the issue of joining the 'Bharat Bandh' called Monday by the Congress to protest the rising prices of petrol and diesel and supported by several opposition parties.

Responding to its own query, the Uddhav Thackeray-led outfit said it wanted to see the strength of the opposition on key issues.

"The people of this country have been watching closely how inflation is rising and petrol and diesel prices are escalating.

"Hopefully, the bandh should not look like the opposition has suddenly woken up from a long sleep on peoples issues and called for the bandh," the Sena publication said.

"Let some in the opposition parties realise where exactly they stand when it comes to peoples issues," it said.

The party targeted Maharashtra minister and BJP leader Chandrakant Patil over his reported comments that one should step into shoes of BJP leaders to realise how difficult it is to run a government.

"Patil should know that it is easier to be a BJP leader than being a common man. Rising petrol prices have a direct impact on escalation of cost of essential items such as foodgrains, milk, eggs, public transport among others," the editorial said.

The Maharashtra-based party hit at out the BJP-led NDA government for not fulfilling pre-poll promises.

"During the 2014 general election, Narendra Modi had made a promise of generating two crore jobs. On the contrary, 20 lakh jobs have been lost almost every year under the Modi regime," the Sena alleged.

"The way the government is putting up billboards about growth in the GDP, it should also put up boards of how fuel prices are skyrocketing," the party said.

The party also wondered when BJP leaders are going to find time to talk about rising prices of fuel instead of targeting Congress president Rahul Gandhi.

The Union government had earned a profit of Rs 2.29 lakh crore from the sale of petrol and diesel. The BJP is in power (along with allies) in 22 states and it can easily bring down the cost of fuel in these states, said the Shiv Sena.

The Sena is part of the BJP-led governments at the Centre and also in Maharashtra. However, it often slams government policies and also criticises BJP leaders on a range of issues. (PTI)

Mumbai, Sep 7: The Shiv Sena Friday likened Maharashtra BJP MLA Ram Kadam to Alauddin Khilji, 13th century Sultan of Delhi, for telling youngsters he would "kidnap" a girl they like, and also questioned his party's silence over his remarks.

The Sena said while Prime Minister Narendra Modi was keen on giving "justice" to Muslim women in triple talaq, in Maharashtra the MLAs of his party were creating panic among the women of the state.

"Queen Padmini committed 'jauhar' along with thousands of other Rajput women to protect their honour, prestige and religion. Their 'jauhar' against Alauddin Khilji and his tyranny is still inspiring women in India. But it seems time has come for the women in Maharashtra to commit 'jauhar' against the BJP's Khilji," the Sena said in an editorial in party mouthpiece 'Saamana'.

According to the legend, queen of Mewar Rani Padmavati had committed 'jauhar' (self immolation) along with thousands of other women in Chittorgarh to protect their honour when Alauddin Khilji attacked the fort in 1303.

"BJP MLA Ram Kadam, who is the chief minister's favourite, uttered derogatory words against women that showed his arrogance. He said 'Just let me know the girl you like and I will kidnap her and hand her over to you'. What kind of hedonistic culture has landed in Maharashtra?" it asked.

The Uddhav Thackeray-led party alleged that the BJP was nurturing such kind of people, who speak ill of women, farmers and wives of soldiers.

"Such people have no right to take Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's name and rule the state," it added.

"What kind of message is the BJP sending out to the youth in the state? Is this what the party's Hindutva and its culture is all about?...This is bound to happen if you rub dirt on yourself in the greed to win elections. What was sown in the last five years is being reaped now," the Sena said.

It further said that Lord Krishna was a protector of women, but ironically the BJP MLA passed anti-women remarks on the birthday of Lord Krishna.

The Sena sought to know why the ruling BJP, which is generally quick to label the opposition as anti-nationals if they raise its voice on issues concerning the country, was silent over Kadam's remarks.

"On the one hand Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants to give relief to Muslim women on triple talaq, on the other hand a sense of fear is prevailing in the minds of women due to the BJP legislator's remarks. The only woman cabinet minister in the state government, Pankaja Munde, should speak on it," it said.

It said why Union minister Smriti Irani, who usually talks about the rights of women, was keeping mum over the issue.

The Sena added that had a Congress legislator made such remarks, the BJP would have created a din and even spoken against president Rahul Gandhi.

Kadam, while speaking at an event during Dahi handi celebrations in the city had said hewould "kidnap" a girl a boy likeseven if she says no to the proposal.

"You (youngsters) can meet me for any work," he is seen in the video clip, telling the crowd, mainly comprising youth.

He was heard further saying that he got requests from youngsters to help them after girls rejected their proposals.

"I will help, 100 per cent. Come (to me) with your parents. What will I do if parents approve (the girl a boy has liked)? I will kidnap the girl concerned and hand her over to you (for marriage)," he was heard telling the crowd. (PTI)

Mumbai, Aug 20: The Shiv Sena said today its MLAs and MPs will donate a month's salary for Kerala flood relief.

The money will be donated in the Kerala Chief Ministers Relief Fund, the Maharashtra-based party said and expressed solidarity with the people of the southern state who are reeling under unprecedented floods.

"To stand with Kerala, all MPs and MLAs of the Shiv Sena will be contributing their one months salary to the Kerala Chief Ministers Relief Fund," Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray said.

"For the last week, our Thane city unit has been actively collecting essential food and clothing materials to be sent to Kerala," he tweeted.

Last week, Congress legislators in Maharashtra said they will donate a month's salary towards relief work in flood -ravaged Kerala.

The Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil of the Congress said party president Rahul Gandhi has asked partymen to stand beside the people of Kerala and extend all possible help to flood victims. (PTI)

New Delhi, Aug 8: The Shiv Sena, an estranged ally of the BJP, will back the NDA candidate for the election to the post of the Rajya Sabha's deputy chairman, the party said today.

The NDA has fielded Harivansh Narayan Singh of the JD(U) for the August 9 election.

"We will back the NDA candidate," said Shiv Sena MP Anil Desai.

The Shiv Sena had abstained from voting on the no-confidence motion in the Lok Sabha moved by the Opposition last month against the Modi government. (PTI)

Mumbai, Jul 28: Taking a dig at Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the Shiv Sena today said that his cabinet colleague Pankaja Munde should be made the CM for at least an hour to clear the Maratha reservation file.

Munde, who is the Rural Development Minister, in a veiled swipe at Fadnavis over the Maratha reservation issue, had recently said that she would not have delayed the decision if she was in-charge.

"Had the file of Maratha reservation been on my table, I would not have delayed it even for a moment. This issue is being delayed as it is pending in the high court," Munde had said while speaking to Maratha protesters at Parli in Beed district.

In an editorial in party mouthpiece 'Saamana', the Shiv Sena said Munde's statement, in other words, means the government was only dilly-dallying on the issue.

"If Pankaja Munde can clear the file without any problems, she should be made the chief minister with the consent of everybody for at least for an hour, so that a decision is taken on the Maratha reservation file," it said.

"Pankaja Munde's stand needs to be understood. There is no reason to believe that she intends to play politics over the issue. If she can request the prime minister to intervene, why can't Fadnavis go to Delhi and do that as well?" it asked.

The party taunted PM Narendra Modi saying he is usually not in Delhi and has no interest left in the country's affairs.

Even if the chief minister goes to Delhi to seek the Centre's help in resolving the Maratha issue, it is difficult to find the PM as he is mostly abroad, it said.

The Sena said that crushing the protests is the policy of the government.

"The Patel quota agitation in Gujarat was crushed.

Hardik Patel was its face and hence it was easy for the government to stamp out the protest. Serious charges like sedition were slapped against Hardik and he was sent to jail," it said.

"The government might have used the same method to crush the Maratha agitation in Maharashtra. However, it faces a difficult situation here as the entire Maratha community is leading the protest," the Uddhav Thackeray-led party said.

The Sena, said Fadnavis alone could not be blamed for the deteriorating law and order situation on the issue as tall promises made before the polls later create problems.

"Promises (of reservation) made to the Dhangar and Maratha communities should be fulfilled now or else the file should be sent to Pankaja Munde for clearance so that the issue gets resolved," it said.

Revenue Minister Chandrakant Patil says Fadnavis keeps working till 3 am, the Sena said in the editorial.

"This must be true. The CM must have been spending sleepless nights due to the Maratha agitation and if he shuts his eyes, Pankaja might clear the file. Therefore, the CM should now find that file and fulfil the demand of the Maratha community," the Sena said.

Marathas, a politically influential community that constitutes around 30 per cent of the state's population, have been demanding 16 per cent reservation.

The community had earlier taken out silent marches across the state to highlight their demands, prominent among them being that of reservation.

The stir, however, turned violent earlier this week with the protesters pelting stones, torching vehicles, blocking roads and stopping train services in several parts of the state. The violence began after a 27-year-old protester from Aurangabad jumped to his death in Godavari river on July 23. (PTI)

Mumbai, Jul 24: Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray today claimed that had his party not supported the BJP to form the government in Maharashtra in 2014, the latter would have come to power by breaking the Opposition Congress and NCP.

In remarks laced with sarcasm, he said people did not make a mistake by voting for the BJP in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, but alleged that they were "duped".

He needled the BJP over its allegations of corruption against the UPA dispensation, on the back of which it came to power, but could not prove any charges.

"Had we not participated in the government, the BJP, like it goes on winning states through all possible means...Like it broke the Congress and Trinamool Congress (TMC) in Tripura, the BJP would have broken the Congress and NCP to come to power in Maharashtra," Thackeray said.

"Instead of letting that happen, I let my people gain experience of working in the government," he said, in the second part of his interview to Sena mouthpiece 'Saamana'.

The Shiv Sena leader sought to know what happened to the 2G scam, which, he said, was discussed not only in the country but across the world.

"During that time (when the scam broke out), the country's image stooped so low, as if there was no country as corrupt as India.

"The result was that the government changed, but nothing happened to the allegations of corruption. Even today, you (the BJP) talk about 60 years of corruption, but nothing has been proved yet," the Sena president said.

"If there really has been corruption, prove it. It is improper to run away after slinging mud at others while holding a lotus in your hand," he quipped.

Responding to another query, Thackeray said nowadays when somebody works, he is termed "corrupt" and if one does not, he is termed "inefficient".

Asked what did he gain from being in power for four years in Maharashtra, Thackeray, whose party is an ally of the ruling BJP in the state and at the Centre, said the Sena ministers in the government got an experience of the administrative work.

"This was in a way a rehearsal of running the government. What should be done, what should not be done. Also, how to implement schemes," he said.

Asked if Prime Minister Narendra Modi was only concerned about his home state Gujarat, the Shiv Sena leader took a dig at the former's frequent visits abroad, saying Modi's attention was only on foreign countries.

To another query, he said people of Maharashtra have experienced the governance of all parties, except the Sena.

"Power will come (in hands of the Sena) when people decide so. I am sure that people have experienced all other parties till now. But, they have not experienced Sena being the only party in power. That is why I got my people to experience being in power," he said.

In the first part of the interview yesterday, Thackeray had taken a jibe at the BJP-led government over incidents of mob lynching, saying cows were safer than women in the country.

"We are a part of the government, but if something is wrong, we will definitely talk about it. We are friends of the Bharatiya Janata, not of any party," he had said, taking a dig at Bhartiya Janata Party's (BJP) name.  (PTI)

Mumbai, Jul 20: The Shiv Sena will abstain from voting on the no-confidence motion in the Lok Sabha moved by the Opposition against the Modi government, party sources said today.

Yesterday, the Sena's chief whip in the Lok Sabha Chandrakant Khaire issued a whip to MPs asking them to be present in the House when the motion was discussed and support the government.

Hours after issuing the whip, the Sena shifted its stance and said party chief Uddhav Thackeray had asked his party MPs to remain in Delhi and a final decision on supporting the Modi government would be taken this morning before the debate started.

"Sena MPs have been asked to remain absent by Uddhav ji during the voting on the no-confidence motion," a close aide of the Sena chief told.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu had sought the support of other parties for the motion, citing the NDA government's "non-fulfilment of the promise" to grant special status to his state. (PTI)

Nagpur, Jul 13: Despite Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis' assurance in the Legislative Assembly that the Nanar project won't be forced on people, opposition Congress-NCP and ally Shiv Sena stalled the proceedings of the House on the issue for the third consecutive day.

The House witnessed three adjournments- twice for 15 minutes and once for ten minutes- before it was adjourned for the day as members of the opposition and Shiv Sena trooped into the well of the House shouting slogans seeking withdrawal of the land acquisition notification and scrapping of the project.

After the Question Hour, Fadnavis told the House that the West Coast Refinery was in the country's interest and the state government will take everyone on board before going ahead with the project at Nanar in Ratnagiri district.

Making a statement in the Lower House on the issue which rocked the legislature proceedings for the last two days, Fadnavis said, "The West Coast Refinery is important for our own oil security and export, for which we have signed MoUs with the Middle East countries."

"Gujarat, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh were eyeing the project. But Andhra was ruled out since the route was not proper. Maharashtra was given priority. The total investment is worth Rs 3 lakh crore," he said.

He added that Gujarat's economy has got a boost due to the Jamnagar refinery. "There is no adverse impact on horticulture and environment," Fadnavis said.

The West Coast Refinery is a green refinery with fourth generation technology. It will have the highest emission standards. A green belt will be developed around he project, he added.

He told the House that the refinery is being modelled on the lines of the one in Singapore.

Fadnavis said 32(1) notification for land acquisition was issued but along with consent for land acquisition, there was opposition to it as well.

"Industries Minister Subhash Desai announced withdrawal of the notification and the file has come to me. I haven't taken any decision on it. Wherever there is opposition, we are holding talks to resolve the concerns. The project will not be forced on the people," he said.

Fadnavis said the environment and social impact analysis would be carried out by National Environmental Engineering Research Institute(NEERI) and IIT Bombay.

"Talks are on to resolve differences," he said.

However, the opposition parties and the Shiv Sena were not satisfied with the reply.

Leader of OppositionRadhakrishna Vikhe Patil demanded that Fadnavis announces scrapping of the project.

Senior Congress leader and former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan said Fadnavis should explain to the people how the project was in the interest of the state.

"Saudi Aramco hires Pakistani engineers. Shall we allow Pakistani nationals into the country. Marine Academy and International Finance Centre have been shifted from Mumbai to Ahmedabad. Why is the refinery brought here?" he asked.

NCP MLA Jayant Patil sought Fadnavis's reply on whether the project will stay in Maharashtra or not.

"It is not possible to reply in yes or no. We will resolve the differences through talks," he said.

"Shiv Sena opposed the Mumbai-Nagpur corridor, but after we explained the importance of the project, they are supporting it. We will arrive at a consensus, address all concerns and then only move forward, "he said.

Shiv Sena's Sunil Prabhu said his party's opposition to the project will continue, and demanded that the project be scrapped.

He said a nuclear power project as well as a refinery project in Konkan is bad for the region's horticulture and fishing industry.

Fadnavis said he had not given a presentation on the project to Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray. "I thought showing the presentation to Industries minister Subhash Desai would be enough," he said when asked by Patil if he had shown the presentation to Thackeray.

The Sena members rushed to the Well demanding that the chief minister announces scrapping of the project. They were joined by the Congress and NCP members.

Thereafter, the House was adjourned for 15 minutes by Speaker Haribhau Bagde.

Later, after the introduction of bills, the House was again adjourned for 15 minutes by presiding officer Sudhakar Deshmukh.

After the business resumed later, Jayant Patil said the government was in a minority on the Nanar refinery issue and should not make the issue a matter of prestige. He demanded that the project be scrapped.

Prabhu said the 32 (1) notification regarding the withdrawal of the land acquisition notification was approved by the chief minister.

Thereafter, House was adjourned for the third time for ten minutes.

After the proceedings resumed, the Gram Panchayats Amendment Bill was introduced for the passage amid din.

Jayant Patil said there was a contradiction in the Sena's stand as its members were opposing the government, but party minister Sanjay Rathod was moving the bill. The bill was approved by a voice vote and the House was adjourned for the day. (PTI)

Mumbai, Jul 13: The Shiv Sena today asked whether BJP president Amit Shah would apologise for his party's UP MLA's remark that even Lord Ram cannot curb rapes.

The Sena's poser came a day after the BJP sought an apology from Congress president Rahul Gandhi for Shashi Tharoor's 'Hindu Pakistan' remark.

"Tharoor said if the BJP wins the 2019 (Lok Sabha) polls, India will become 'Hindu Pakistan'. In short, if (Narendra) Modi is voted to power again, India will be declared a Hindu rashtra (nation).

"This is RSS's agenda, which Tharoor has only expressed from the Congress platform," the Sena said in an editorial in its mouthpiece 'Saamana'.

The Lok Sabha MP from Thiruvananthapuram, Tharoor, had set off a political controversy on Wednesday with his remark that if voted to power again, the BJP will rewrite the Constitution and pave the way for creation of a "Hindu Pakistan".

Yesterday, the BJP had demand an apology from Gandhi for the "attack on Indian democracy and Hindus".

"The BJP wants Congress president Gandhi to apologise for Tharoor's remarks. But one needs to understand that Tharoor is only speaking the language of the BJP," the Sena said.

"One of its MLAs Surendra Narayan Singh had said even Lord Ram cannot curb rapes. His statement is an insult to Hindus. Shouldn't BJP chief Amit Shah apologise for his remark?" it said.

BJP MLA from Bairia in Uttar Pradesh, Singh, had recently said, "Bhagwan Ram bhi aa jaayenge, tab bhi balaatkaar ki ghatna per niyantran nahi ho paayegaa (The incidents of rape cannot be curbed, even if Lord Ram descends on earth)".

The Sena said, "India was divided because of the Congress. That party is responsible for the division. If Pakistan was founded on the basis of religious identity, then Hindustan is a Hindu rashtra."

"The Sangh parivar always accused (Jawaharlal) Nehru, (Sardar) Patel and others of turning Hindustan into a 'secular' state. If Nehru and others had committed this mistake, then the country gave two opportunities to the BJP to rectify it.

"First during (Atal Bihari) Vajpayee's reign and now under Modi. It is not necessary to wait till 2019 to declare India a Hindu state. Modi can do it right now and we insist that he does it immediately," the Uddhav Thackeray-led party said.

The situation in India is not such that it should be called 'Hindu Pakistan'. There is a different kind of anarchy in Pakistan, the Sena said.

"The democratic system in that country (Pakistan) is over. Inflation, unemployment, corruption and other evils are wreaking havoc. Those speaking truth are being eliminated there. Pakistan has been like this since its birth," it added.

"But have the problems in India been resolved? They still persist. After demonetisation, the financial condition of the poor worsened. The government seeks to save cows and sheep, but cannot stop farmers' suicides," the Sena said.

Though the government has not been able to build a Ram temple in Ayodhya, the Railways has announced Ramayan Express to touch the sentiments of the people, it said.

"Till the 2019 elections, such colourful balloons will be released in the air and new promises will be made. This cannot be called a 'Ram rajya'," the party said. (PTI)

Mumbai, Jun 29: The Shiv Sena retained the Mumbai Graduates constituency in the Maharashtra Legislative Council, while NCP deserter Niranjan Davkhare, who contested on a BJP ticket in the Konkan Graduates' seat, emerged victorious today.

The Sena retained the Mumbai Graduates' seat, which it has held since 1985.

Senior Shiv Sena leader late Pramod Navalkar had represented the seat for three terms. Present Health Minister Deepak Sawant won it twice.

Sena candidate Vilas Potnis polled 19,354 votes while Ameetkumar Mehta of the BJP bagged 7,792 votes.

In Konkan Graduates' constituency, Shiv Sena's Sanjay More was defeated by Niranjan Davkhare, who had defected to the BJP from the NCP on the eve of the polls.

Davkhare, who was the sitting MLC of NCP, bagged 29,035 votes, while Shiv Sena's Sanjay more got 23,357 votes.

NCP's Najeeb Mulla polled 14,626 votes.

Kapil Patil of Loktantrik Janata Dal won the Mumbai Teachers' seat for third consecutive time. He polled 3,751 votes while his nearest rival Shivaji Shendge of Shiv Sena got 1,538 votes.

While in Nashik Teachers' constituency, Kishore Darade, an independent candidate backed by the Shiv Sena, won the election defeating Aniket Patil of the BJP. Darade polled 16,886 votes, while Patilgot 10,970 votes.

Polling for these seats was held on June 25 and 72.35 per cent of the total 2.38 lakh voters had exercised their franchise. Total 71 candidates were in the fray for the four seats.

Nashik division Teachers' seat comprises Nandurbar, Dhule, Jalgaon, Nashik and Ahmednagar districts, while Konkan Graduates' comprises Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Palghar.

Mumbai Teachers' and Mumbai Graduates' comprise Mumbai city and suburban districts.

A Graduates' constituency is one in which only graduates from any recognised Indian university, or having an equivalent qualification, can vote.

In a Teachers' constituency, only a full-time teacher in at least a secondary school or higher is eligible to vote.

In the 78-member Maharashtra Legislative Council, 31 MLCs are elected by the state Assembly members, 21 by local authorities, 12 are nominated by the governor and seven each (total 14) are elected by graduates and teachers.

The constituencies, seven each for teachers and graduates, are (division wise) - Mumbai, Pune, Konkan, Aurangabad, Nagpur, Nashik and Amravati.

The terms of the sitting members - Deepak Sawant (of Shiv Sena - Mumbai Graduates), Kapil Patil (of Loktantrik Janata Dal - Mumbai Teachers), Niranjan Davkhare (who switched over from NCP to BJP - Konkan Graduates) and Apoorva Hire (an independent - Nashik Teachers) - are coming to an end on July 7.

The elections assumed significance as the Shiv Sena had denied ticket to minister Deepak Sawant from the Mumbai Graduates' constituency, which he represented for two consecutive terms.

Besides, election in the Konkan Graduates' seat was also keenly watched as Davkhare had joined the BJP ahead of the polls.

Last month, in the six biennial elections from local bodies seats, BJP had bagged three seats, Sena two and NCP one. (PTI)

Mumbai, Jun 26 : Slamming the BJP for pulling out of the alliance government in Jammu and Kashmir, the Shiv Sena
today said people are tired of the party's "conspiracies" and that it needs lessons in speaking the truth.

It also accused the BJP of again starting "election politics" in the northern state.

It was the BJP's proposal to ally with the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in the first place and it had done all the running around to ensure it comes to power in Kashmir, the Sena said.

"The BJP has pulled out its mask and started election politics in Kashmir once again. After enjoying three years in power, the BJP says the government was not working, it could not work with the PDP, terrorism had increased and development of Leh, Ladakh was being ignored," an editorial in Sena mouthpiece 'Saamana' said.

Once again an environment is being created in Kashmir and a new mask is being put on. "People are tired of these conspiracies now. Somebody should start giving them lessons in speaking the truth," it said.

BJP president Amit Shah conveniently distanced the party from the mess the Kashmir valley was put in, the Marathi daily said, noting that the PDP was blamed for all the violence in the state.

"You enjoyed three years. However, when it was time to reap the fruits, you refused to take responsibility. It was the BJP's proposal to ally with the PDP for power and the subsequent running around was also done by the BJP," it said.

Along with the deputy chief minister's post in Jammu and Kashmir, several important portfolios related to development were held by the BJP, the Sena pointed out.

If Leh, Ladakh were being ignored, why did the BJP not voice it while in power and why did the party not oppose the compensation given to the family of slain Hizbul Mujahideen militant Burhan Wani from the state exchequer, asked the Sena, which is an ally of the BJP at the Centre and in Maharashtra.

"The BJP on its own will allied with a party that is soft on terrorists but when it saw problems for itself, it distanced itself. None of its prime agendas like Article 370 were touched upon in three years but it started speaking about it after pulling out (of the alliance government)," it said.

Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti has now dropped a "bombshell" by saying that peace measures in the Kashmir Valley were adopted on the advice of BJP leaders and that it would be wrong to state the government was soft on terrorism, the Sena said.

The three-year Jammu and Kashmir government collapsed last week with the BJP pulling out of its alliance with the PDP.       PTI

Mumbai, Jun 23 : In a fresh attack on the central government, the Shiv Sena today said the nation is reeling under "financial anarchy".

The BJP's carping ally said many banking frauds have come to light during the four-year-old tenure of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and sought to know what action has been taken by his government against those who "looted" banks.

"The economy of the country has been destroyed under the Modi government. Modi wanted to show that he, and not (his predecessor) Manmohan Singh, was the real economist by bringing the rupee at par with the US dollar," the Sena said in an editorial in its party mouthpiece 'Saamana'.

"However, the Indian currency has plummeted to its lowest levels," it said.

The Uddhav Thackeray-led party said banks and financial institutions are engaging in undisciplined behaviour and those who "looted" banks ran away from the country under Modi's nose.

"What happened to the promises of not tolerating corruption and sending those engaging in it to jail?" the Sena publication sought to know.

Citing the recent criminal case registered against Pune-based developer D S Kulkarni for allegedly cheating a public sector lender, the Sena said many banking frauds have come to fore during the Modi regime.

Allegations of wrongdoing have also been levelled against ICICI Bank CEO Chanda Kochhar and businessmen Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi and Vijay Mallya, said the Sena publication.

"Big industrialists have drowned loans worth nearly Rs 1.25 lakh crore. This includes big names and nationalised banks. How many chairmen of banks have gone to jail for giving loans illegally? What strong step has Finance Minister Piyush Goyal taken against those who looted banks?" it asked.

The Sena said demonetisation caused panic in the country and adversely affected its economy.

"The country is reeling under financial anarchy (due to note-ban) and it is only increasing," the party claimed.

"The demonetisation caused a lot of harm to the unorganised sector and unemployment increased. Also, claims that demonetisation would end terrorism in Kashmir proved to be hollow," the party said.

The Sena demanded registration of a case against the RBI governor over the demonetisation exercise, which led to scrapping of high-value notes. PTI

Mumbai, Jun 21: In a vitriolic attack on the BJP, the Shiv Sena today charged that the saffron party opted out of power in Jammu and Kashmir after spreading anarchy, and said history will never forgive the party for its "greed".
When the BJP failed to check terrorism and violence in the northern state it pinned blame on the People's Democratic Party (PDP), the Sena said comparing the move to the way Britishers "decamped" from India.
It also lashed out at Pime Minister Narendra Modi, saying "running a nation is not a child's play."
Jammu and Kashmir was yesterday placed under Governor's rule for the fourth time in the last one decade after the BJP withdrew support to its alliance partner PDP, prompting Mehbooba Mufti to resign as the chief minister.
"The BJP opted out of power in Kashmir after spreading anarchy in the valley," the Sena alleged in an editorial in party mouthpiece 'Saamana'.
"The situation had never deteriorated to this extent there, rivers of blood had never flown so extensively and never had so many jawans lost their lives before," said the BJP's ally at the Centre and in Maharashtra.
All this happened during the BJP's rule in the valley. However, PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti was blamed and the saffron party opted out of power like a gentleman, it quipped.
"The government in Kashmir was formed due to greed (of the BJP). The country, jawans and people of Kashmir had to pay a heavy price for this greediness. Thus, history will never forgive the BJP for this," the Marathi publication said.
It said Prime Minister Modi and his party were voted to power at the Centre after he promised a solution to end terrorism in Kashmir.
"But people today feel the (previous) Congress-National Conference (coalition) government in Kashmir was better. Today Kashmiris are attacking the Army, terrorists are attacking Army posts. Jawans are being martyred everyday and innocent people are losing their lives," the Sena rued.
The defence minister offers condolences to families of martyrs on tweets, it said in remarks laced with sarcasm.
Ruling a nation is not a child's play, it added.
Taking a dig at the prime minister's frequent foreign tours, it said while Modi travels around the world, the United Nations in its report on Kashmir blamed the government for violation of human rights on people.
The Uddhav Thackeray-led party also sought to know what happened to assurances of 'ghar wapsi' (homecoming) of Kashmiri Pandits and striking down Article 370 of the Constitution.
"Terrorism has increased by a thousand times after demonetisation. Intrusions by Pakistanis have increased.
Deaths of soldiers have increased despite there being no war.
When you failed to stop all this, you pinned the blame on the PDP. Britishers too decamped in the same manner," it charged.
The PDP-BJP government in the northern state collapsed on Tuesday ending the saffron outfit's three-year- old alliance with the regional party. (PTI)
