New Delhi, Aug 5   :  Some opposition parties termed the scrapping of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir and its bifurcation into two union territories as a "black blot", with Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad Monday charging the state's head, considered as India's crown, has been "chopped off" and its identity removed.

Various parties like the Congress, TMC, DMK, NCP, AAP, RJD and left parties opposed the said resolution as well as a bill to bifurcate the state into two union territories.

Opposing the move, Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad said: "I had never imagined that the head of the state which is India's crown will be chopped off"

"You have made light of the state of J & K," he said, charging it was a 'matter of shame' that the Centre had reduced the state to a non-entity with Lt Governor's rule.

"It will be a black blot on India's history when this Bill is passed (in Parliament)," Azad said.

He said an "atom bomb" exploded in the House when the Home Minister (Amit Shah) spoke on Monday, claiming that the "state was being removed from the map of India" by being bifurcated and converted into a Union Territory.

He observed that the people in the state of Jammu and Kashmir stood by the country's security forces and did not choose Pakistan despite it having the same religion. Instead, they accepted the secularism of India, he said.

"Today, you have again laid the foundation to disintegrate. Integration does not take place through legislation, its happens through the heart, Azad said.

He dared the Government to bring a Bill to convert Gujarat into a Union Territory, saying it should not take things lightly, and accused the Centre of muzzling the state's history while being "drunk" with power.

Derek O Brien of the Trinamool Congress described it as "Black Monday" and a dark day for the country's constitution, the idea of India, and the Rajya Sabha.

Opposing it, Manoj Kumar Jha of RJD said the (abolition of) Article 370 was not possible to execute in this lifetime.

Today we have opened the gates for Kashmir to turn into Palestine in five years, Jha alleged.

Tiruchi Siva of the DMK said the move was unconstitutional as the Constitution says that only the Assembly of the state should decide on such crucial issues.

The architects of the Constitution had given powers in this regard only to the state Assembly and the Central government has made this move when the elected Assembly is not in place, Siva said.

"MNCs (multinationals) would take over and it won't be the land of Kashmiris anymore," he claimed.

New Delhi, Jun 29: A sedition complaint has been filed in a Delhi court against senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad for his alleged remarks that more civilians were being killed in army operations in Jammu and Kashmir than terrorists.

The plea filed by an advocate has sought action against the politician for offences under sections 124 (sedition), 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 505 (1) (spreading rumour about army/navy/air force official which is likely to cause mutiny) of the IPC, claiming that the alleged remarks were painting the Army as killers of innocents which was "nothing less than waging war against the country".

The matter has been listed for hearing tomorrow before a magisterial court here.

According to the complaint lodged by advocate Shashi Bhushan, in a TV interview on June 22, Azad had allegedly said the "Indian Army in Jammu and Kashmir was killing more civilians than terrorists during military operations in the state."

The complaint also accused the former J and K Chief Minister of spreading hatred and trying to malign the country's image.

New Delhi, Jun 19 : The Congress today ruled out any tie-up with the PDP after the BJP pulled out of the ruling alliance in Jammu and Kashmir.

Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said here that the BJP had committed a "Himalayan blunder" by forming a government with the PDP.

He said the BJP, a national party, should not have allied with PDP, a regional player.

"The regional parties should have been allowed to form an alliance among themselves," he told reporters here.

The alliance has devastated the state, be it economically or socially, and has left Jammu and Kashmir in a state of "ruins", he said.PTI

New Delhi, Mar 20: The Opposition, led by Congress, on Tuesday blamed the BJP-led NDA government for the ongoing standoff in Parliament and charged it of running away from discussing issues of public concern like bank scams and granting special category status to Andhra Pradesh.
Addressing a joint press conference here, leaders of several Opposition parties alleged that the government has failed to reach out to them, to resolve the logjam in Parliament.
Talking to reporters here, Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad said leaders of 10 Opposition parties on Tuesday morning met Rajya Sabha Chairperson M Venkaiah Naidu, in a bid to end the Parliament logjam and resume business in both Houses.
The decision was taken during a meeting of opposition leaders, which was held in Parliament premises.
'We felt that there should be discussion in Parliament on important issues like the bank scams, demand for special category status for Andhra Pradesh and the Cauvery issue. Wee met him to convey to him that both the Houses should function,' Mr Azad said.
He, however, alleged that even though the Rajya Sabha Chairman had made efforts to solve the impasse, no effort had been made by the government to reach out to the Opposition.

New Delhi, Dec 21: Describing the verdict of the special CBI court in the 2G spectrum case as a 'moral victory' for the Congress, the party on Thursday said the ruling of the court has proved that the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi unleashed a 'malicious propaganda' against the previous UPA Government with an aim to come to power at the Centre.
The party demanded an apology from Mr Modi and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley for speaking untruths on the 2G case to people during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections with the specific aim of coming to power.
Talking to reporters here, senior Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad said,'the truth has been unfolded by the special CBI court in the 2G spectrum case. Ultimately, the truth has prevailed.
'It has been proved now that the BJP and Mr Modi unleashed a malicious propaganda against the previous UPA Government in cahoots with former CAG Vinod Rai to defame the previous UPA Government with the sole aim of coming to power. It is because of that propaganda that the BJP is in power at the Centre and the Congress is in the opposition. However, today, all those charges have turned out to be baseless.'
Demanding an apology from Mr Jaitley and Mr Modi for speaking untruths to the people, AICC media incharge Randeep Surjewala said,'the verdict of the CBI special court has brought out the truth in the CBI Spectrum case. In today's verdict, the court has acquitted all the 18 people chargesheeted in the case. With the BJP, Mr Modi and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley should now apologise to the nation for levelling false allegations against the UPA for coming to power.' UNI

New Delhi, Nov 21: Charging the Modi Government with running away from Parliament to avoid discussions on issues like irregularities in the Rafale deal, the faulty implementation of GST and farmers distress that could impact BJP's chances in the Gujarat assembly polls, the Congress on Tuesday said this government had become an election machine.
The Congress said it would give a memorandum in this regard to President Ram Nath Kovind. Addressing a joint press conference with Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, Deputy Leader of the party in the Rajya Sabha Anand Sharma and AICC spokesperson Deepender Hooda, Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad said, 'The Government is avoiding calling Parliament as it is afraid of giving answers on issues like the irregularities in the Rafale deal, the faulty implementation of the GST, its failure to create jobs and farmers distress. They know that discussion on these issues in Parliament will expose them in the Gujarat elections.' Calling the NDA Government as an 'election machine', Mr Azad said, 'This is a Central Government that has become a machine for running election. During the Bihar and Uttar Pradesh elections, the entire Union Cabinet had camped in the state for campaigning. A similar thing is happening during the campaigning for the Gujarat assembly polls. 'No Prime Minister in India's post independence history has campaigned so extensively for state assembly elections. In fact, this is a big scam on which a discussion should be held as the expenditure during the campaigning by the PM runs into thousands of scores.' Mr Azad said he, along with Mr Kharge, had met Parliamentary Affairs Minister to call on the Government for calling the session of Parliament immediately. Addressing reporters, Mr Kharge said in the 70 years history of post independence India, this year, Parliament has had the least number of sittings.
'In the last 70 years, Parliament has had the least number of sittings this year. Till now, Parliament has had 38 sittings . Even if the Government calls a sitting of the Winter session now, just ten sittings of Parliament will be possible. They do not want to call Parliament this time as discussion there on various corruption scandals of this Government like the Rafale deal and demonetisation will expose them before the people ahead of the Gujarat assembly elections. For this Government, Parliament has become a joke,' Mr Kharge said. Refuting the charges by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley that the previous UPA Government has also curtailed sittings of Parliament in 2011, Mr Anand Sharma said, 'In 2011, Parliament was summoned on November 3, 2011. The session began on November 22, 2011 and concluded on December 30.
'In 2012, when elections of Himachal and Gujarat assembly were to be held, the session was held from November 20 to December 20 which coincided with the holding of the elections in Gujarat.' UNI

New Delhi, Oct 24: The Congress accused on Tuesday the NDA government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi of not having any Kashmir policy and said the issue can only be solved through dialogue and not through “hot pursuit”. Reacting to a question on the appointment of former Intelligence Bureau chief Dineshwar Sharma as Kashmir interlocutor here, senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said, “Since Kashmir is a political issue, the Congress had always favoured dialogues with all stakeholders, and the government after three-and-a-half years has finally acknowledged it." He said peace in Kashmir was only possible through talks and the government should hold talks with all stakeholders whether it likes them or not. Alleging that the government has wasted three and half years, Mr Azad said, “Had the government taken a decision then, we would have not lost precious lives of hundreds of soldiers and civilians and neither kids have lost their eye sights due to pellet guns.” The Congress leader said though the government has appointed an interlocutor, he doubted the intention of the government as there was no time frame set for it. The government had on Monday appointed Mr Sharma as representative of the Centre to hold talks with stakeholders in Jammu and Kashmir. UNI

New Delhi, Jul 31 : Charging the NDA Government at the Centre with turning a blind eye to the tragedy caused by floods in several areas of the country, the Congress today demanded that the Centre take immediate steps for the relief and rehabilitation of people hit by the deluge. Addressing reporters here, senior Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad said, 'The flood situation in the country is alarming with the estimated death toll across states swelling to 300 and the number of people marooned being estimated at nearly one crore nationally. Yet the BJP Government at the Centre has made only perfunctory voices, conducting aerial surveys and providing little relief. The Congress party demands that the Central Government immediately launch efforts to come to the aid of flood ravaged people.' Charging the BJP with turning a blind eye to the tragedy in flood-hit areas, Mr Azad said, 'There is an alarming situation in various states of the country due to the floods. However, the Central Government has failed in providing proper relief and rehabilitation to flood affected people and states.' Refuting the charge by the BJP that Congress MLAs from Gujarat were not active in efforts for relief in flood hit areas in Gujarat, Mr Azad said, 'An atmosphere is being created across the country against the MLAs so that they can come back and from the airport, 'they can be stolen'. 'The Congress is very active and visible in Gujarat.' Charging the Union Ministers with being oblivious to the tragedy in flood-hit areas, he said, 'Union Minister Smriti Irani failed to visit flood hit areas in Gujarat when she visited the state to file her nomination for the Rajya Sabha.' Repudiating the claim by the government of an improvement in the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, the Congress today called upon the Centre to take the nation into confidence about the real situation and disclose what it is doing to bring about normalcy in the state..

New Delhi, Jul 19 : Repudiating the claim by the government of an improvement in the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, the Congress today called upon the Centre to take the nation into confidence about the real situation and disclose what it is doing to bring about normalcy in the state.. In a joint statement to reporters, senior Congress leaders P Chidambaram and Ghulam Nabi Azad said there was continuing violence in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. 'Almost everyday, soldiers are being killed, common people are dying and hundreds are being injured. So, the government is misleading the people of the country by claiming that there has been an improvement in the situation,' they said. Mr Chidambaram alleged that the conditions in Jammu and Kashmir have deteriorated. Only last week , there have been some major incidents of violence. 'Since July 10, casualties have been reported every day from Jammu and Kashmir. Eight pilgrims, six jawans and one child have been killed until July 18. Besides there have been many incidents of clashes between civilians and the security forces and numerous people have been injured.. 'The government should inform people about the actual situation in the state. The entire country is concerned over the situation in Jammu and Kashmir. Therefore, people should be taken into confidence in this regard,' Mr Chidambaram said. Addressing reporters, Mr Azad said 'the situation in Jammu and Kashmir has deteriorated. On Tuesday, several school children had to face a scary situation on the Line of Control. Their vehicle was targetted. 'Yet the government claims that the situation in Jammu and Kashmir has improved. Such a claim defies belief and common sense. The statement made by the Government yesterday is wrong, misleading and clearly at variance with the situation on the ground. 'The Congress repudiates government's claim and calls upon the Centre to take the nation into confidence and disclose what it is doing to bring about normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir.' He charged the NDA government with failure to control the situation in the state. UNI
