New Delhi, Aug 9: Lok Sabha proceedings were today adjourned briefly following protests by Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) members.

TRS members were demanding allocation of defence land in the state for certain projects, similar to that given in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.

During the Question Hour, the members walked into the Well shouting slogans.

Amid the din, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan adjourned the House for five minutes.

After the House resumed, TRS members had gone back to their seats.

New Delhi, Jul 10: The "cycle of interruptions" in Parliament will continue endlessly if MPs justify disruptions by citing the conduct of other parties in the past, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has said in an emotional letter to parliamentarians ahead of the Monsoon session next week.

Reminding MPs of their "moral responsibility", Mahajan urged them to ensure smooth functioning of the House and said "time has come for us to introspect and decide what is the way forward and ideal image for our Parliament and democracy".

The task of protecting and keeping intact the prestige and sanctity of Parliament, the "sacred temple of democracy", is a collective responsibility, she said in the two-page letter.

"On the basis of my experience, I can say that people observe the performance of their representatives very keenly and media also presents to the people the detailed report of their performance in Parliament and Parliamentary constituency," Mahajan, who is serving her eighth term as a MP, said.

It was a privilege being a member of the "august House", she added, and told MPs that people had great expectations from them and had reposed their faith in them.

"In return you may also wish to not only meet the expectations of your constituents and the nation but also make contribution to the progress of the country and strengthening of democracy."

Discussing frequent adjournments in the last sessions due to members coming to the well of the house -- shouting slogans and showing placards -- Mahajan said divergence of opinion and dissent should be within the parameters and norms of Parliamentary dignity so that people may continue to have abiding faith in democracy and democratic institutions.

"It is for this purpose that we have given ourselves the rules for conduct of business in the House which have evolved over the years. Thus, is it not our moral responsibility to ensure that these rules are followed in letter and spirit?" she asked.

"Can we justify our own conduct by advancing the argument of improper conduct and interruption of the business of the House by other parties in the past?" she added.

If this argument is accepted then the cycle of interruptions will continue endlessly and such tendencies will never be checked, the speaker asserted.

According to her, MPs must also keep in mind that their conduct in Parliament and the quality of debate and discussion have a profound impact on the views and opinions of the youth regarding democracy.

Mahajan cited a 'shloka' from the Shrimadbhagwat Gita to say that whatever a noble man does, other men also do, whatever standard he sets, the world follows it.

The speaker said she is hopeful that political battles will be fought in the constituencies, but MPs will discharge their democratic responsibilities in the house.

The Monsoon session of Parliament begins July 18 and continues till August 10.

New Delhi, Mar 5: Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on Wednesday expressed confidence that the impasse in Parliament over discussion of banking frauds will be resolved in a day or two.
She said this after chairing an all-party meeting of leaders in the House she had convened.
Talking to mediapersons outside Parliament, Ms Mahajan said she has asked party leaders to talk to one another and resolve the matter because the impression being created through pandemonium in the House is not good. ``There are people who come from abroad to watch Parliament. People watch proceedings on television and with such scenes a wrong message goes out and the aim of Parliament goes awry.’’
The Speaker said all leaders put forth their point of view but she told them that a solution would have to be found to break the deadlock. ``Let’s see if not today, then in two-three days it will be resolved.’’
In answer to a question about Congress objection to the use of term ``over the years’’ in the banking fraud matter, Ms Mahajan said, ``Over the years can mean one year, two years or 10 years. I don’t think it happened in one day. It must have taken more time. And it is not about one person or one bank. This is a fault in the system also. That is what I did after discussions and taking into account all notices in the matter. This also I explained to them.’’
On placards being shown in the House, she said the rules have been framed by members. ``Whether it is to create disruptions, raise placards or come into the Well of the House, members can express their views briefly and then return to their seat. All these issues were discussed.’’
Asked whether women members will get more chance to speak on International Women’s Day on Thursday, she said, ``Let Parliament run first, then they will speak. After all they are also part of Parliament.’’
Among those who attended the meeting were KC Venugopal (Congress), Saugata Roy (AITC), Bhartruhari Mahtab (BJD), M Thambidurai (AIADMK), Bhagwant Singh Mann (AAP), and Anandrao Vithoba Adsul (Shiv Sena).
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar, Minister of State Arjun Meghwal and BJP Chief Whip in Lok Sabha Rakesh Singh also participated in the meeting. UNI

Patna, Feb 17: Lok Sabha Speaker and Chairperson of India Region of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Sumitra Mahajan today strongly advocated the approach for universal development, saying there should not be any politics on the issue and it must be achieved with cooperation of all.
Ms Mahajan while inaugurating the 6th conference of India Region CPA here, which is being organised for the first time in Bihar, said all efforts should be made for sustainable development. Only achieving the stage of being developed was not important, it should be ensured that development could remain sustainable, she added.
“We can adopt the approach for universal development with justice to all”, Ms Mahajan said adding that this goal could be achieved only with cooperation of all and there should not be any politics over the issue.
The Lok Sabha Speaker, in her philosophical note, said rains did not discriminate in any region on any line and in the same mode, development should also reach every corner without any sort of discrimination. CPA had sustainable development as its important agenda and all parliamentarians should work hard without being affected by their political consideration to achieve the goal of universal development, she suggested. UNI
