Srinagar, Oct 17 (PTI) Security forces allegedly thrashed some media personnel who were covering an encounter with militants in the city here, a journalist present at the spot said Wednesday.

Though the police refused to comment on the alleged incident, a PTI photojournalist present there gave a first-hand account.

There were several media personnel who were covering the encounter when some police personnel asked them to leave, he said.

However, the media personnel stood their ground, leading to an altercation between 3-4 scribes and police, following which they allegedly thrashed three journalists.

The Kashmir Press Club (KPC) condemned the incident, alleging that some of the journalists were injured in the security forces action.

The KPC expressed shock over the behaviour of the security forces and hoped that the state administration will take note of the incident and act accordingly. 

Three militants and a policeman were killed during the encounter between ultras and security forces in the city Wednesday.

Mumbai, Oct 15 (PTI) Four persons have been arrested for allegedly assaulting a television journalist near his house in south Mumbai, police said Monday.


The accused, all city residents aged between 20 and 25 years, were nabbed late Sunday night from Tardeo area, a senior police official said.

Herman Gomes, working with a private TV channel, was returning home along with a friend in a taxi on Sunday when he saw four to six men waiting near his house in Gamdevi area.

The men started abusing Gomes and later allegedly assaulted him and also hit his friend, as per the victim.

Gomes was injured in the attack and later received six stitches near his eyes.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (zone-II) Dnyaneshwar Chavan, said prima facie it appears the incident might have taken place in the heat of the moment following some argument.

"However, we are trying to go into the depth of the matter," he said, adding, the accused do not have any criminal background.

Based on Gomes' complaint, the Gamdevi Police had registered a case under IPC sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (rioting), 324 (voluntary causing hurt by dangerous weapons) and other relevant provisions.

Journalists' associations in the city had Sunday condemned the attack and alleged that police did not file the victim's complaint promptly.

The Mumbai Press Club termed the attack on Gomes a "dastardly act".

An association of crime reporters in the city have urged Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to take action against police officers who allegedly delayed registration of the First Information Report (FIR) in the matter.

Minister of State for Home (urban), Ranjit Patil had later said an investigation was on into the incident and "correct steps will be taken in the direction".

Lahore, Oct 6 (PTI) The ashes of veteran Indian journalist Kuldip Nayar were immersed on Friday here in the River Ravi by his granddaughter.

Nayar passed away on August 23 in New Delhi. 

His granddaughter Mandira, also a journalist, scattered his ashes in the Ravi. 

She later visited the Lahore Press Club where the honorary membership of the club was bestowed on her. After her grandfather, she became the second Indian to be given the honour.

"My grandfather was not a member of the New Delhi Press Club, but of the Lahore Press Club. Although he lived in Delhi, he was spiritually part of Lahore. His will to scatter his remains in the Ravi at Lahore is a testimony to his spiritual connection to the place. The late journalist lit the candle of peace and it will be kept burning," said Mandira.

Nayar was born in Sialkot and studied at Forman Christian College then the Law College in Lahore, obtaining a law degree. 

When violence broke out at partition in 1947, the family migrated to India.

Ahmedabad (Guj), Sep 11 :  As many as 35 journalists were detained Tuesday after they tried to forcibly enter the office of Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani in Gandhinagar, the police said.

The journalists, representing small and medium size local newspapers, had gone to meet the CM to raise the issue of changes made in the state government's advertisement policy, police said.

"The chief minister wanted a small group of journalists gathered outside his office to meet him, but a large number of scribes tried to force their way into the CM's office, following which they were detained," said Gandhinagar Superintendent of Police Mayur Chavda.

He said the journalists had sought an appointment for 5 PM.

They wanted to meet the chief minister to register their protest against the recent change made in the Advertisement Policy, the SP said, adding that the detainees were released after an hour.

A local scribe said the journalists also wanted to raise the issue of the recent attack on some mediapersons by police personnel outside the residence of Patidar leader Hardik Patel, who is observing indefinite fast near Ahmedabad.

Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi said the incident showed the BJP government's apathy towards journalists in the state.

"Despite knowing how journalists were treated outside the residence of Hardik Patel, the government did not deem it necessary to enquire into the matter. This shows the BJP government's apathy towards the representatives of the fourth pillar of democracy," he said.PTI

New Delhi, July 16 :  The CBI has taken the custody of journalist Upendra Rai in connection with a fresh case of alleged extortion and corruption, an official said.

The case, registered on May 5, in which he has been arrested recently, pertains to alleged extortion of Rs 15 crore from a builder in Mumbai.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said one of the directors of Mumbai-based White Lion Real Estate Developers Pvt Ltd, Balvinder Singh Malhotra, had filed a complaint with it against Rai.

The journalist was earlier arrested by the agency for allegedly getting an airport access pass using links with an aviation company in violation of rules. Later, the Enforcement Directorate had also registered cases against him and arrested him.

Rai would be produced before a special CBI court today as his police remand comes to an end, an official said.PTI

New Delhi, Jul 2: Senior journalist Rajat Sharma on Monday beat World Cup winning India cricketer Madan Lal by 517 votes to become the new president of Delhi and Districts Cricket Association.

The results of the DDCA polls were announced on Monday and Sharma's group swept the elections winning all 12 seats.

Sharma got a total of 1531 votes while former Test cricketer Lal could only poll 1004 votes. The third candidate in the fray, advocate Vikas Singh, got 232 votes only.

It was a major setback for BCCI acting president CK Khanna, whose wife Shashi lost the vice-presidential battle against Rakesh Bansal, younger brother of former DDCA president Sneh Bansal.

Rajesh beat Shashi by 278 votes while Bansal junior got 1364 votes to Shashi's 1086 votes.

The defeat might prove to be the end of the road for Khanna in DDCA, where he enjoyed supreme power for nearly three decades.

Sharma and his panel's candidature was backed by a political heavyweight from the ruling party with the IOA president Narinder Batra throwing in all his might. Batra incidentally is a former DDCA treasurer.

"The moment Sharma got blessings from a senior cabinet minister, there was no chance in hell for any other candidate to win this election. What was not expected was a clean panel sweep. It will be good that Sharma will get a free hand to run the body. This also means that CK Khanna's reign in DDCA ends unless he strikes some deal with Sharma," a senior DDCA official told news agency PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Sharma was always considered as the favourite to win against Lal, who was backed by Khanna and former India opener Chetan Chauhan's group.

With DDCA being the first among equals to go into elections after the Supreme Court appointed Lodha Committee suggested path-breaking structural reforms, the polling also witnessed abolition of proxy system with nearly 3000 voters turning up to cast their vote.

Among the other notable winners was former sports committee head Vinod Tihara, (1374 votes) who became secretary defeating nearest rival Manjeet Singh (998) by 376 votes.

Tihara is expected to run the daily affairs of DDCA including a big say in all the representative teams -- especially Ranji Trophy and men's age group.

The joint secretary's post went to Rajan Manchanda (1402), younger brother of former treasurer Ravinder, who beat Pushpender Chauhan (953) by 449 votes. Pushpender is the younger brother of Chetan Chauhan.

For treasurer's post, Om Prakash Sharma beat Deepak Singh by 1241-891 votes.

Sanjay Bhardwaj was elected for the director's post (first-class cricketer) while Renu Khanna became the women director.

The other directors elected were Apruv Jain, son of former media manager Ravi Jain, who polled 1286 votes, Alok Mittal, Nitin Gupta, Shiv Nandan Sharma and Nitin Agarwal. (PTI)

Srinagar, Jun 21 :  Normal life was affected in Kashmir Valley today due to a strike called by separatists against the killing of journalist Shujaat Bukhari.


Most of the shops, fuel stations and other business establishments in Srinagar the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir were shut, a police official said.

He said public transport was minimal in the city, but private cars, cabs and auto-rickshaws were seen plying.

The official said similar reports were received from other district headquarters of the valley.

The separatists, under the banner of Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), on Tuesday called for a strike for today against the killing of Bukhari and also civilians allegedly in security forces firing.

The spokesman said the JRL demands an international probe into Bukhari's gruesome murder.

Bukhari was shot dead, along with his two personal guards, outside his office in Press Enclave here on 14 June by unknown gunmen. 

Authorities have suspended train services in Kashmir as a precautionary measure, the police official said.PTI

Srinagar, Jun 18 : Congress president Rahul Gandhi today wrote to the family of slain journalist Shujaat Bukhari, saying his killing was a grim reminder that progressive voices were constantly at the risk of being silenced by extremist elements.

"I am shocked at the cold-blooded killing of Mr. Shujaat Bukhari outside his office. One of the few moderate voices in an atmosphere torn apart by narrow political considerations, his loss is a grim reminder that progressive voices are constantly at the risk of being silenced by extremist elements," he said in a letter to Rafiuddin Bukhari, the father of the slain journalist.

Gandhi said he lauded Bukhari's courage to continue with his work, despite an earlier attempt on his life.

"In the true spirit of journalism, his moderate views were critical for a nuanced understanding of the Kashmir question. A firm votary of a political dialogue with Pakistan, his commitment towards a credible peace process will be remembered," he said.

"I offer my sincere condolences to the team at Rising Kashmir and wish you success in carrying on the excellent work done by you," the Congress chief added.

Bukhari (50), along with his two personal security guards, was shot dead by three motorcycle-borne assailants outside his office here on June 14.

A special investigation team (SIT) under the supervision of the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, central Kashmir has been constituted to probe the killing.PTI

Srinagar, Jun 15 :  The Jammu and Kashmir Police today arrested a suspect in connection with the killing of veteran journalist Shujaat Bukhari and two of his PSOs, Kashmir's top police officer announced today. 

The suspect has been identified as Zubair Qadri, Inspector General (IG) Kashmir Swayam Prakash Pani said at a hurriedly called press conference.

He said Qadri was seen in the video stealing the pistol of the PSO who was shot dead along with Bukhari. 

"The pistol has since been recovered and he is being questioned about his presence at the scene of the crime. So far, he has not been able to give any convincing answers," he said.

Pani added that the state police had formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under Deputy Inspector General (central Kashmir) V K Virdi to probe the killing of the editor of Rising Kashmir yesterday.

Pani also described the killing of the journalist as a "terror attack".

The identity of the other three attackers was being ascertained, the police official said.

Bukhari, 50, was gunned down yesterday evening soon after he got into his car from his office at Press Enclave in the city centre, Lal Chowk. 

His two personal security officers were also killed.PTI

Jammu June 15: Condemning the killing of senior journalist Shujat Bukhari in strongest words, BJP’s National Vice President and Incharge J&K Affairs, Avinash Rai Khanna, has said the terrorists have not killed just one person but their act amounts to murder of entire fourth pillar in the democracy in the country. They have committed a heinous crime and dented a fraternity, which is engaged in exposing the wrongdoings on every front of life and working relentlessly in pursuit of giving justice to the deprived and strengthen the national forces. They also work towards bringing awareness among public about nefarious designs of such elements which pose threat to unity and integrity of the country. However, the terrorists chose to attack them to silence their voice. But such incidents and gruesome attacks on selective basis will only strengthen the media and motivate them in further exposing them, without fear or suppression, Khanna said.
He further added that time has come journalists and all media channels work in unity, fearlessly in exposing terrorists and all those elements who pose threat to security of common people and peace of the nation. The government should also take steps towards ensuring adequate security and safety of the journalists in areas like J&K so that they feel assured and deliver their job in a fair and fearless manner, the BJP leader said.
Khanna said that history stands witness to the fact that when nation faced such adverse situations; it is the media which stood together to boost the morale of all such forces that work for unity and integrity of the country besides achieving larger goal of peace.
Avinash Rai Khanna, while condoling untimely death of Shujat expressed his sympathies with the bereaved family.

New Delhi, Mar 24: Journalists from different news papers, channels and other publications on Saturday staged a protest in front of the Delhi Police Headquarters against the manhandling of a female photojournalist by the Police, 
Condemning the action of the police force against the female photo journalist , who was covering the JNU protest on Friday, journalists demanded the Police Commissioner to come forward and discuss the issue as such incidents were becoming common.
Many print and electronic media journalists gathered outside the Police Headquarters and said that such kind of behaviour should not be repeated.
According to a video that went viral on Friday , female police personnel of Delhi Police were seen manhandling a photo journalist.
The incident took place during the protest by JNU students against alleged sexual a harrassment by a JNU professor .
Earlier on Saturday, delhi Police had apologised to the media saying that it was an unfortunate incident, "Yesterday’s incident was a very unfortunate one. Our deepest apologies to the media. Our intention wasn’t to obstruct the media from doing its job. In the confusion, some female police personnel mistook the photojournalist as a protestor,'police said in a statement.
The police said strong cognisance has been taken of the incident and inquiry was being initiated.

JAMMU, MARCH 13:   Inspector General of Police Jammu, Dr S. D Singh Jamwal today informed that a group of journalists was attacked by local youth in Bathindi area of Jammu this afternoon.
He further informed that an FIR under section 341, 323, 382, 34 RPC has been registered at Police Station Trikuta Nagar. Two accused both residents of Jammu have been arrested on the basis of initial investigation and further investigation of the case is going on.

Agartala, Jan 02: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the state government to investigate the killing of journalist Sudip Datta Bhowmik, by Tripura State Rifles (TSR) 2nd battalion headquarters near Agartala has served a notice to the general secretary of Tripura working journalist Association (TWJA) Debasish Majumdar for interrogation.
The SIT served him notice yesterday under section 160 CrPC asking Majumdar to appear before the team today. The notice stated that Majumdar in a press conference had mentioned that there was an apprehension of the involvement of former Director General of Police K Nagraj behind the killing of Sudip.
The notice served upon Majumdar ,however, stated that based on his statement, the media had covered the story, which also indicated that Majumdar in posession of material clues in regard to his claim of involvement of Nagraj in the case. “For the interest of the case, your examination has become necessary,” it added.
However, TWJA and Forum for Protection of Journalists (FPJ), Tripura condemned the notice and accused the SIT officials of attempting to destroy the evidence of the case and divert the mode of investigation.
FPJ Convener Pranab Sarkar alleged that SIT has intended to harass the protesting journalists who have been fighting for independent government enquiry like by CBI into the murder of Sudip Datta Bhowmik and Shantanu Bhowmik.
TWJA is an active associate of FPJ and being the General Secretary of the association Debasish Majumdar is one of the executives of the forum and serving notice upon him is considered to be a derogatory move by SIT, which was not being recognized by the journalists and opposing it since beginning.
“It is a clear move of police to harass the journalist by serving notice, which itself is illegal. Debasish had expressed his doubt over the role of K Nagraj behind the murder of Sudip Datta Bhowmik who was gunned down by the police in the camp. SIT has been trying to shield the actual criminals involved in the murder and conspiracy,” Sarkar said.
He further pointed out that Debasish had mentioned in the press conference that the half-burnt newspaper of Syandan Patrika which was recovered near Sudip’s bullet-riddled body had two stories – one against K Nagraj and another was regarding corruption of the accused commandant of TSR 2nd battalion Tapan Debbarma.
“The particular story of Nagraj dealt with the initiative of a section of police officers to bring him back as DGP who has been chargesheeted by CBI for possessing disproportionate assets. The state government had to remove Nagraj from the post because of several charges against him but some corrupt police officials including Tapan Debbarma were lobbying for reinstating him,” Sarkar stated.
To justifying the demand of independent government enquiry Debasish Majumdar in the press conference stated that a former DGP who is still in service is believed to be involved in the case, the SIT of Tripura police would not ensure impartial investigation rather they would try to save the actual conspirators in course of investigation, he said adding that by serving notice to Debasish SIT proved their weakness in the investigation.
The veteran journalist and editor of Syandan Patrika Subal Kumar Dey alleged that not only Tapan Debbarma, several other top police officials had met him in several occasions requesting him to stop writing about corruption of K Nagraj who was the DGP then. “We have explained everything and the conspiracy of police about their  plan to harass the journalists to President of India, Union Home Minister and 
Prime Minister’s Office. We have no faith in SITs constituted for investigating the murder of Sudip Datta Bhowmik and Shantanu Bhowmik because in both the cases police are accused,” Dey opined.
He alleged that both the journalists were victims of deep rooted conspiracy hatched at top level.
While Sudip Datta Bhowmik was gunned down by TSR personnel under the instruction of commandant Tapan Debbarma on November 21 last at R K Nagar of Agartala, Shantanu was killed by unknown miscreants in presence of police when he went to Mandai of Agartala to cover the agitation of ruling CPI-M and opposition IPFT on September 20 last. UNI

Scribes demand insurance cover, bullet proof jackets


RAJOURI, SEPTEMBER 23: The Sub-Committee of Press Council of India (PCI) headed by S N Sinha arrived here today at Rajouri to interact with the media-persons from twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri.
The other members of the PCI Sub-Committee include Dr Suman Gupta and Prakash Dubey.
The committee members were accompanied by the Director Information, Muneer-ul-Islam and other officers of the Directorate of Information.
During their day long interaction, the PCI Sub-Committee held detailed deliberations with the media owners, editors and working journalists of these border districts to take first-hand appraisal of the issues confronting the media in the hilly Pir Panchal region.
During the interaction, the journalists raised issues like demand for bullet proof jackets and helmets, insurance for media persons etc. in these border districts especially in case of cross-border firing in these border districts.
They also raised issues pertaining to accreditation policy demanding accreditation at district level.
Issues pertaining to empanelment of local newspapers for advertisements of both district beside issues of security pass, were also raised.

          KARGIL, JUNE 12: In a bid to boost tourism activities and promote Kargil as a tourism destination, the Department of Tourism, Kashmir is organizing a FAM tour for media persons throughout the Country who will be taken to different tourism spots in Kashmir and Kargil.
          This was announced by the Director Tourism, Kashmir Mahmood A Shah during an interactive meeting with the travel agents and hoteliers on his visit to Kargil Tourist Information Center at Kargil.
          Assistant Director Kargil Aga Taha, Executive Engineer Kargil Development Authority, hoteliers and travel agents attended the meeting.
          “The tourism department will invite journalists from across the country who will write about Kashmir and Kargil so that the people know about the tourism potential,” the Director said adding that the department will also organize Kargil festival for tourism promotion of the district.
          He said that Kargil is acting only as a transit point for the travelers and locals are not benefited much. “We want tourist to stay in Kargil and spend few nights here. For this, we would try to promote lesser known destinations in the region,” he said.
          The major sporting events would be held in the district in which participants from different countries would participate. The department would promote the district for the adventure tourism activities.
          The Director said that the high peaks which are 6000 meters and above in height will be identified and all such peaks in Kargil will be used for adventure tourism. This will help in tourism promotion of the region. He urged the hoteliers to avail all the schemes by Government of India for the infrastructure development and upgradation of their units.
          Earlier, the Director visited Drass and the lesser known spots in the area. Besides taking the stock of the tourism facilities in the area, he visited Maskoh Valley and Bimbat Village to promote the places among travelers.
          Maskoh Valley is a small village with beautiful landscape through which River Drass flows while as the Bimbat has a historic importance as the place has a large rock which is believed to be body of Pandava Bhimsen in the solidified form. Till date, the rock is perceived to be a holy relic. The site has become an attraction among the travelers.

          Director has also ordered for making a proper road and trekking path leading to the site.

SRINAGAR, MAY 19: The visiting delegation of journalists and local media fraternity appreciated the Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) for making creditable arrangements for the smooth and timely coverage of the 14th GST Council meeting which concluded at SKICC here today.
The journalists complemented the efforts of DIPR for ensuring seamless coverage of the three-day long mega event which was chaired by Union Finance Minister Mr Arun Jaitley and attended by Finance Ministers and Finance Secretaries from 30 states and Union Territories across the country.
The DIPR had established a state-of-the-art Media Centre, with high-speed internet connectivity, computers and other paraphernalia, at Centaur Lake View Hotel, located adjacent to the venue of the GST meeting.
A large number of the visiting and local journalists used the Media Centre, which was operational round-the-clock, for filing stories on GST Council meeting. The Department also organized two press conferences during the proceedings of the event.
Over the past three days, Minister of Finance, Dr Haseeb Drabu, Minister for Public Works and the State Government Spokesman Naeem Akhtar, Commissioner Secretary Finance, Navin K Chowdhary and other officers of the state government visited the Media Centre to personally take stock of the arrangements made there.
The Ministers and officers appreciated the Department of Information for making excellent arrangements for the media-persons to facilitate smooth coverage of the GST council meeting.

Meanwhile, the Finance Minister, Dr Haseeb Drabu has thanked the media for taking keen interest in the event and ensuring its widest possible coverage.
