New Delhi, Jan 8 (PTI) A man was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly killing a 30-year-old tailor after he objected to a dog barking at him, a police official said.

The accused, Mehtab, was arrested from Kashmiri Gate in the afternoon, he said.

During interrogation, he told police that he was in an inebriated condition at the time of the incident.

On Sunday evening, Aafaq, who used to work as a tailor in a factory, was walking past Mehtab's house when the dog started barking at him. Fearing that the dog would bite him, the victim allegedly hurled a stone at the animal.

A brief argument then broke out between Aafaq and Mehtab, who had spotted the former hurling the stone, the official said, adding that as the matter got heated up, Mehtab, who was carrying a loaded gun, shot Aafaq.

Following the incident, Mehtab had fled from the city and had gone to Dehradun. He returned to Delhi on Tuesday afternoon and was eventually arrested, the official added.            PTI

The Supreme Court Thursday dismissed a petition seeking directions for the immediate execution of the four men convicted in the Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case of 2012. "What kind of prayer you are making?" a bench of Justices Madan B Lokur and Depeak Gupta said. "You are making the court a joke," it added.

New Delhi, Dec 13 (PTI) The Supreme Court Thursday dismissed a petition seeking directions for the immediate execution of the four men convicted in the Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case of 2012.

"What kind of prayer you are making?" a bench of Justices Madan B Lokur and Depeak Gupta said. "You are making the court a joke," it added.

The 23-year-old paramedic student was gangraped on the intervening night of December 16-17, 2012 inside a running bus in South Delhi by six persons and severely assaulted before being thrown out on the road. She died on December 29, 2012 at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore.

On July 9, the apex court dismissed the pleas of three convicts -- Mukesh (31), Pawan Gupta (24) and Vinay Sharma (25) -- seeking review of the apex court verdict which upheld the judgements of the Delhi High Court and the lower court in the case.

The fourth death row convict, Akshay Kumar Singh (33), has not filed a review plea in the apex court.

New Delhi, Oct 11 : The Supreme Court on Thursday was apprised by a super-speciality hospital here that Uttar Pradesh politician D P Yadav, facing life term in the MLA murder case, would undergo spinal surgery on October 19.

Yadav was awarded life imprisonment by a Dehradun CBI court in 2015 for his role in the murder of Mahendra Singh Bhati, an MLA from Ghaziabad's Dadri area. The lawmaker was shot dead at Dadri railway crossing in December 1992.

Yashoda Superspeciality Hospital at Ghaziabad, in its medical report filed in pursuance of an earlier order, told a bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi that Yadav's viral fever has gone now and he would be operated upon by using local anaesthesia on October 19.

The bench, also comprising Justices S K Kaul and K M Joseph, considered the report and extended the interim bail of the controversial politician for undergoing the surgery. It also directed the hospital to furnish a fresh report on October 22 and fixed the matter for hearing a day after.

After perusing the report, the court today said the surgery, which was said to be a complicated one, can be done through laproscpoic method by using local anaesthesia.

Earlier, the apex court had directed the hospital to furnish a report whether Yadav was fit to undergo spinal surgery and had cautioned him against taking any "undue advantage".

The bench, which had earlier granted an interim bail for 15 days to Yadav for undergoing pre-operation tests, had taken strong note of the fact that the tests have not been done on the ground that he was having viral fever and had warned that it would send him back to jail.

Yadav, whose appeal in the Uttarkhand High Court against the 2015 trial court verdict is pending, had moved the top court for grant of bail for undergoing the surgery.

The High Court, on June 14 this year, had rejected the bail plea of Yadav.

The apex court, on September 18, had granted interim bail for 15 days to Yadav on a condition that he will get himself admitted as in-patient in Yashoda Superspeciality Hospital for the requisite pre-operative checks.

It had also asked him to deposit a bail bond of Rs 1 crore and two sureties of like amount for getting the interim bail.

Besides Yadav, the trial court had also convicted Pal Singh, Karan Yadav and Praneet Bhati for offences of murder, attempt to murder and criminal conspiracy of the IPC in the murder case.

The case was transferred to CBI court at Dehradun in the year 2000 on the direction of the Supreme Court after doubts were expressed about a fair trial in the case in Uttar Pradesh where Yadav was an influential politician.    PTI

Palghar (Maha), Aug28:  A 17-year-old boy allegedly killed his elder sister as he was apparently upset with her for mingling with other boys in their locality here in Maharashtra, police said today.

The accused was angry with his 19-year-old sister for being friendly with boys in their locality in Valiv town here.

Some neighbours had also taunted his family over the woman's conduct, police inspector Bharat Jadhav said.

The body was sent for postmortem, Jadhav said, adding that a probe was on into the incident.PTI
New Delhi, Jun 25 : An Army Major, arrested for allegedly killing another officer's wife, was today sent to four-day police custody by a Delhi court.

Metropolitan Magistrate Manisha Tripathy granted the custody of Major Nikhil Handa, who was produced before the court amid tight security, to the police which said he has to be taken to Meerut in Uttar Pradesh to make certain recoveries including his clothes and the weapon used to commit the crime.

Since weapon of the offence (knife) used in committing the offence is to be recovered, clothes worn by the accused at the time of offence are to be recovered, the place from where the victim was picked up by the accused and route followed by the accused to the place of occurrence is to be ascertained, the persons contacted by the accused after commission of the crime are to be ascertained, the source of weapon of offence is to be established, the places where the accused visited after the commission of crime from Delhi to Meerut are to be ascertained, in my considered opinion, four days police custody is justified, the magistrate said.

Handa was arrested yesterday from Meerut for his alleged involvement in the killing of another Major's wife in west Delhi on Saturday. The woman's body was found with her throat slit near the Brar Square in the Delhi Cantonment area.

During the arguments today, the police said it needed the custody of the accused to take him to Meerut and make recoveries.

Opposing the remand application, the counsel for the accused, advocate Sanjeev Sahai, argued that no investigation had been done by the police since Handa was arrested and said the recoveries which the police claimed to make, made no ground for his custody.

Initially, the police had not supplied the copy of the remand application and the FIR to the counsel of the accused, who sought them before the court. The court then directed that the copies of these documents be supplied to the accused.

According to the police, it had received information that a woman had died in an accident. Later, when they inspected the body, it was found that her throat was slit, the police has said.

The accused had allegedly run a car over her face and the body in order to make the incident appear as an accident, the police alleged.

The woman was dropped at the Army Base Hospital in her husband's official vehicle by a driver, who could not find her when he returned to pick her up later.   PTI

Jammu, Mar 24 : Union Minister in Prime Minister’s Office Dr Jitendra Singh on Saturday said that all those who are being questioned in Kathua Rape Murder Case should be released after they submit ‘undertaking’ and cooperate in the investigations.
“Those who are being questioned into the case should be released after 1 or 2 hours with an ‘undertaking’ that they will not leave the place without informing the investigating agency,” Dr Singh told a news channel here on Saturday.
-He said, “nobody should be kept in an illegal confinement and this type of method is being adopted across the country for fair investigations into various cases.”
Dr Singh further said that when there is no transparency, people feel “harassed”, adding, “handing over case to the CBI is the prerogative of state government but what more important is impartial and transparent enquiry.”
“By handing over the case to the CBI doesn’t mean that the culprit will be spared or the investigating agency will be biased. Whosoever is the culprit will not be let free and face the punishment, no matters whatever agency is investigating the case,” said the Union Minister.
Meanwhile on Nowshera ADC Row, Dr Singh said, “we have been told that the state government is taking the cognizance.”

“I am sure that the state government will look after the issue of relief/ex-gratia to the security personnel from the state, attaining martyrdom during counter-insurgency operations,” he added.

Gurugram, Jan 8: A District Court here on Monday dismissed the bail application of a 16-year-old student who was accused of killing the Standard II pupil Pradyuman Thakur at Ryan International School at Gurugram.
On September 8, 2017, Pradyuman, a student of Ryan International School, was found with his throat slit in the washroom. It was alleged that the teenager had killed Pradyuman in a bid to get the school closed so that a parent teacher meeting could be deferred.
Additional Sessions Judge Jasbir Singh Kundu was hearing an appeal filed by the accused against an order of the Juvenile Justice Board( JJB). The Board had earlier rejected the bail application of the Class 11 Ryan International School student by saying in its order that the accused was mature enough to recognise the consequences of his actions.
Defense counsel submitted that the charge sheet in the matter was not filed within one month as prescribed in the Juvenile Justice Act and required documents were also not provided so bail may be granted on this ground alone. Defence further submitted that a sound surety will be produced before the court if bail is granted.
Counsel for CBI opposed the bail application by submitting that the mandatory period for filing a charge sheet is 90 days under the Criminal Procedure Code. It was further submitted by CBI that "circumstances have changed" as the accused had been declared an adult by the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB). UNI

Agartala, Jan 02: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the state government to investigate the killing of journalist Sudip Datta Bhowmik, by Tripura State Rifles (TSR) 2nd battalion headquarters near Agartala has served a notice to the general secretary of Tripura working journalist Association (TWJA) Debasish Majumdar for interrogation.
The SIT served him notice yesterday under section 160 CrPC asking Majumdar to appear before the team today. The notice stated that Majumdar in a press conference had mentioned that there was an apprehension of the involvement of former Director General of Police K Nagraj behind the killing of Sudip.
The notice served upon Majumdar ,however, stated that based on his statement, the media had covered the story, which also indicated that Majumdar in posession of material clues in regard to his claim of involvement of Nagraj in the case. “For the interest of the case, your examination has become necessary,” it added.
However, TWJA and Forum for Protection of Journalists (FPJ), Tripura condemned the notice and accused the SIT officials of attempting to destroy the evidence of the case and divert the mode of investigation.
FPJ Convener Pranab Sarkar alleged that SIT has intended to harass the protesting journalists who have been fighting for independent government enquiry like by CBI into the murder of Sudip Datta Bhowmik and Shantanu Bhowmik.
TWJA is an active associate of FPJ and being the General Secretary of the association Debasish Majumdar is one of the executives of the forum and serving notice upon him is considered to be a derogatory move by SIT, which was not being recognized by the journalists and opposing it since beginning.
“It is a clear move of police to harass the journalist by serving notice, which itself is illegal. Debasish had expressed his doubt over the role of K Nagraj behind the murder of Sudip Datta Bhowmik who was gunned down by the police in the camp. SIT has been trying to shield the actual criminals involved in the murder and conspiracy,” Sarkar said.
He further pointed out that Debasish had mentioned in the press conference that the half-burnt newspaper of Syandan Patrika which was recovered near Sudip’s bullet-riddled body had two stories – one against K Nagraj and another was regarding corruption of the accused commandant of TSR 2nd battalion Tapan Debbarma.
“The particular story of Nagraj dealt with the initiative of a section of police officers to bring him back as DGP who has been chargesheeted by CBI for possessing disproportionate assets. The state government had to remove Nagraj from the post because of several charges against him but some corrupt police officials including Tapan Debbarma were lobbying for reinstating him,” Sarkar stated.
To justifying the demand of independent government enquiry Debasish Majumdar in the press conference stated that a former DGP who is still in service is believed to be involved in the case, the SIT of Tripura police would not ensure impartial investigation rather they would try to save the actual conspirators in course of investigation, he said adding that by serving notice to Debasish SIT proved their weakness in the investigation.
The veteran journalist and editor of Syandan Patrika Subal Kumar Dey alleged that not only Tapan Debbarma, several other top police officials had met him in several occasions requesting him to stop writing about corruption of K Nagraj who was the DGP then. “We have explained everything and the conspiracy of police about their  plan to harass the journalists to President of India, Union Home Minister and
Prime Minister’s Office. We have no faith in SITs constituted for investigating the murder of Sudip Datta Bhowmik and Shantanu Bhowmik because in both the cases police are accused,” Dey opined.
He alleged that both the journalists were victims of deep rooted conspiracy hatched at top level.
While Sudip Datta Bhowmik was gunned down by TSR personnel under the instruction of commandant Tapan Debbarma on November 21 last at R K Nagar of Agartala, Shantanu was killed by unknown miscreants in presence of police when he went to Mandai of Agartala to cover the agitation of ruling CPI-M and opposition IPFT on September 20 last. UNI
